  • What is the holdup on PHP 6?

    - by Billy ONeal
I've read in multiple places, including highly recommended PHP books published several years ago, that PHP 6 was just over the horizon, and would fix several of the BIG outstanding issues with PHP (namely unicode support). However, its been several years even since I've read those books, and PHP 6 is still not considered kosher for production use. Is there a specific feature that is proving difficult to implement or is it a simple lack of community desire to develop PHP 6?

  • Usage of Maven (and open source in general) in high governance and risk-averse large organizations (

    - by bart
Does anyone have any good stories of these kinds of organizations being open to using open source (such as tools like Maven etc). Many staff I've encountered have little or no exposure to open source/systems and open source is treated with great suspicion. Some reasons given for this are lack of support and robustness, which is ironic given the number of end-of-life unsupported vendor products that are in production. Bonus points for any success stories where you've seen open source go into orgs like this and have a real benefit!

  • PostgreSQL compare databases tool or generating migration script util

    - by opedge
In our development we use two servers with PostgreSQL 8.4 - development and production. So, after changes were made on development server we would like to automatically generate SQL migration scripts. I found that EMS DB Comparer for PostgreSQL can do it, but it is only for Windows (our development team use Ubuntu for developing). Do you now alternative tools to do this?

  • Launch Scala REPL programatically?

    - by David Crawshaw
I would like to launch a Scala Swing application from the command line, then after the application is started, drop into the Scala REPL to use as a control interface. Ideally I would also like to pre-bind some variable names. Even better would be using a Java2D terminal emulator for the REPL, but I couldn't find anything appropriate. Does the Scala REPL have a public API?

  • What exactly are signals and slots in Qt?

    - by Jen
I know how they work conceptually, but how are signals and slots implemented in the Qt framework? Qt Creator treats them as keywords, but are they simply a set of macros, or is a special pre-processor required before these source files can be compiled? In other words, if I use Qt's signal/slot features in my code, can I easily compile it on any C++ compiler?

  • MySQL vs PostgreSQL for Web Applications

    - by cnu
I am working on a web application using Python (Django) and would like to know whether MySQL or PostgreSQL would be better when deploying for production. In one podcast Joel said that he had some problems with MySQL and the data wasn't consistent. I would like to know whether someone had any such problems. Also when it comes to performance which can be easily tweaked?

  • What's the best way to test a P2P live streaming app?

    - by hbt
Hey guys, I've been working on a P2P live streaming app and I'm having some trouble testing it properly. At the moment, I'm testing it using: 1) Another laptop + an external server 2) Multiple instances running on different ports Problem is: this is not exactly ready for production. Is there something like a simulator OR any of you guys worked on a torrent client, p2p client, live streaming solution and had to test it? Please let me know, Thanks, -hbt

  • Convert large raster graphics image(bitmap, PNG, JPEG, etc) to non-vector postscript in C#

    - by Dennis Cheung
How to convert an large image and embed it into postscript? I used to convert the bitmap into HEX codes and render with colorimage. It works for small icons but I hit a /limitcheck error in ghostscript when I try to embed little larger images. It seem there is a memory limit for bitmap in ghostscript. I am looking a solution which can run without 3rd party/pre-processing other then ghostscript itself.

  • How to formulate a SQL Server indexed view that aggregates distinct values?

    - by Jeremy Lew
I have a schema that includes tables like the following (pseudo schema): TABLE ItemCollection { ItemCollectionId ...etc... } TABLE Item { ItemId, ItemCollectionId, ContributorId } I need to aggregate the number of distinct contributors per ItemCollectionId. This is possible with a query like: SELECT ItemCollectionId, COUNT(DISTINCT ContributorId) FROM Item GROUP BY ItemCollectionId I further want to pre-calculate this aggregation using an indexed (materialized) view. The DISTINCT prevents an index being placed on this view. Is there any way to reformulate this which will not violate SQL Server's indexed view constraints?

  • How to use Linq with Castle ActiveRecord

    - by Ronnie Overby
I am playing around with Castle ActiveRecord and noticed that the download included the file, Castle.ActiveRecord.Linq.dll. I haven't found any documentation for using Linq with ActiveRecord, only some old blog posts. What is the usage pattern? Is Castle.ActiveRecord.Linq ready for production use? I'm using reflector, pending an answer.

  • How do I hook a git pull on the remote?

    - by Danny
Is there a way to hook when a git pull happens on the remote (similar to a pre-receive or post-receive). Basically I'd like to be able to cause the remote to commit whatever it has when there is a pull. In my situation, whatever is live on the remote is an authoritative source which may get modified without a git commit. I want to make sure when I pull I'm always able to get the latest of whatever is live.

This is my jQuery: function GetFeed(){ document.getElementById("marq").innerHTML = ''; $.ajax({ type: "POST", url: "xmlproxy.ashx", dataType: "html", success: function(obj) { $('<span class="tickerItem"></span>').html(obj).appendTo('#marq'); } }); }
