  • How do I enable Ubuntu Gnome system tools

    I am running Ubuntu 10 with Gnome 2.30.2. This is a VMWare workstation image provided by another company that I do not have support in this regard. I am trying to access the graphical tools for configuring the network, users, and services but the System-Administration menu does not have these options listed. The main issue I am trying to solve is to correct the problems with the gnome menu options and network settings I have the gnome-system-tools package installed, and I am unable to run command-line versions of the tools, such as nm-applet (I get no GUI if I run that command, the process is running in the background). I realize that I can perform many tasks command-line, but I would like to use the GUI for administrative functions as I am not overly proficient for all command for restarting services and setting a static IP with a specific gateway. Further, I can run gnome-nettool, but I cannot change the IP, I can only see my network card. nm-connection-editor does not show any network cards that I can configure to change the IP. Currently, I am getting a DHCP through my NAT in VMWare, I want to set it to a specific IP address though.   • ubuntu suspend works, but then immediately starts

    Having a strange problem after upgrading from Ubuntu 11.04 to 12.04. Previously I could suspend just fine, the computer will switch itself off. Pressing the ON button will switch it on and it will resume. After upgrading to 12.04 however, when I suspend it does (almost) the same, turns itself off, but about 2 seconds later, the computer turns itself on again, and it goes back to life from suspend. I haven't changed any of the hardware or BIOS and it was working before just fine. Also tried every possible switch of pm-suspend ; setting acpi_sleep=nonvs in /etc/default/grub and also this suggestion but nothing seems to make a difference... UPDATE: just tested suspend using the 12.04 liveCD and it was working perfectly fine... but when I boot normally it doesn't. ANOTHER UPDATE: After re-installing I noticed that I can suspend. However, after restoring my home folder - the strange suspend problem happens again. I then created a new user account. When I login to the other account I can suspend without a problem... So This seems specific to my account only. How/What can cause this in my own user settings?

My system is already up to date (I updated yesterday). I wanted to know if there is a way to update a specific program from the command line, like sudo apt-get update <program-name>. I know this command doesn't exist, but I'm hoping something equivalent does.

  • Where are Wireless Profiles stored in Ubuntu [closed]

    Where does Ubuntu store profiles that allow it to remember the credentials to private wireless networks that it has previously authenticate to and used? I just replaced my Uncle's hard drive with a new one and installed Ubuntu 10.04 on it (he had Ubuntu 9.10 on his old hard drive. He is at my house right now, and I want him to be able to access his private wireless network when he gets home. Usually, when I upgrade Ubuntu, I have his /home directory on another partition, so his wireless profile to his own network persists. However, right now, I'm trying to figure out which .folder I need to copy from his /home/user folder on the old hard drive, to the new hard drive, so that he will be able to have wireless Internet when he gets home. Does anyone know with certainty, exactly which folder I need to copy to the new hard drive to achieve this?

  • Can not connect remotely to MySQL Server on Ubuntu 10.10

    Ok I have searched google for two days trying to get this to work. Here are the steps I have taken so far: Clean install of Ubuntu 10.10 Install mysql 5.1 as well as admin Comment out the bind address in the config file Create a new database Create a new user that is username@% to allow remote connections Grant all access to this user to the new database EXCEPT the grant option Login on the server is ok using this new user and database on the localhost Login on the server is ok using this new user and database on the server internal network ip Login from a remote computer is ok using this new user and database using the internal network ip Login is not working when logging in with this username and database using the external ip address from the server or the remote computer. I have port forwarding enabled for this port and it is viewable from outside as confirmed by canyouseeme.org I have nmap'd using the following command on the internal ip and get the below result: nmap -PN -p 3306 192.168.1.73 Starting Nmap 5.21 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2011-02-19 13:41 PST Nmap scan report for computername-System-Name (192.168.1.73) Host is up (0.00064s latency).   • Hibernate Many-To-One Foreign Key Default 0

    I have a table where the the parent object has an optional many-to-one relationship. The problem is that the table is setup to default the fkey column to 0. When selecting, using fetch="join", etc-- the default of 0 on the fkey is being used to try over and over to select from another table for the ID 0. Of course this doesn't exist, but how can I tell Hibernate to treat a value of 0 to be the same as NULL-- to not cycle through 20+ times in fetching a relationship which doesn't exist? <many-to-one name="device" lazy="false" class="Device" not-null="true" access="field" cascade="none" not-found="ignore"> <column name="DEVICEID" default="0" not-null="false"/>

  • Ubuntu 12.04 VirtualBox on powerful W7 quite slow

    I own a Thinkpad T420s with 8GB RAM, 160 GB SSD and a quite fast i7 processor. Summa summarum a very fast computer that works perfectly. Now, I am not very impressed by the performance of my Ubuntu 12.04 virtual machine running on VirtualBox 4.1.18. I assume that Virtual Machines are always a bit slower than the guest system, still I think it should be more performant given the hardware settings I give it: 4096 MB RAM 1 CPU without CPU limitation (I would like to give it more but then it does not seem to work - I am not experienced in this maybe somebody could give me advice on this too) Activated PAE/NX, VT-x/AMD-V and Nested Paging 96 MB Graphics Memory (no 2D or 3D acceleration) ~ 14 GB disk space, currently about 7 GB are used Maybe I misconfigured something, could you give me a hint please? Thanks! Edit: What I mean by slow is that for example switching tabs in the browser (whether FF or Chrome) only goes with a 0.5s delay or something, as well as switching application windows and/or double-clicking applications in the dock to get all open windows.. opening Aptana takes about a minute whereas opening something like Photoshop on the guest system takes 5 seconds

    I want to run windows 8 as a guest os with virtualbox on some thinkpad (haven't bought one yet) running Ubuntu 12.04. Apart from virtualizing windows 8 (mostly just for use with the office suite app) my needs are very modest, I don't need much more than emacs and a browser. What I'd like to know is what kind of specs will be necessary to run windows 8 well as a vm, using the office apps. It would be a shame to waste money on overpowered hardware. Are there any official guidelines from oracle or windows on this? Would this lenovo x220, for example, be sufficiently strong? The specs below were taken from this review.     The fact that Delicious has two sets of API authentications one with username and password and one with oAuth told me something about things I was going to experience and I wasn't wrong. Unfortunately I have to deal with both APIs now and am unsuccessful getting through the first hurdle of API v2 (Yahoo oAuth).   • Google Contacts API - No Redirection

    Hello there, I am currently working on Contact Importer web app (in PHP) so I will be able to grab email address from a user's account on Gmail, Yahoo, etc and use them for my own evil purposes. Just kidding, my web app is very friendly. I thought I would start with Google. I found they have a fantastic little API called Google Contacts API which lets a programmer, like myself, to access a user's contacts. After a couple of hours of struggling and throwing shitty code together, I ran into a few road-blocks. My main question is this: Is there any way that I can have a user provide their username and password for Gmail on my website and have my code retrieve the contacts without that nasty redirection to a Google login page? It's kind of ruins the whole flow of my web app. I've looked into AuthSub, and gotten that to work, but of course the catch is that you have to redirect the user to obtain the access token. It looks like OAuth will have this same catch. The one ray of hope I have is the ClientLogin method of authentication. Again, there is a catch, sometimes Google throws you a CAPTCHA instead of the auth token. Again, the user flow is ruined. I've noticed that our good ol' friends over at Twitter have it working just fine. Does anyone know how they do it? Thanks!

    Hi, I have some trouble testing my Android application which includes the google maps API. The ooficial API example worked just fine but if I copy the code into my own project it keeps saying: "The application has stopped unexpectedly". I looked up the key in the keystore several times and registered it with google. Even tried reinstalling the SDK. Does anybody know what the problem is?     I'm using a Google Analytics API Class in PHP made by Doug Tan to retrieve Analytics data from a specific profile. For example i want to see how many people visited my website from different country's in 2009. //make a new instance from the class $ga = new GoogleAnalytics($email,$password); //website profile example id $ga->setProfile('ga:4329539'); //date range $ga->setDateRange('2010-02-01','2010-03-08'); //array to receive data from metrics and dimensions $array = $ga->getReport( array('dimensions'=>('ga:country'), 'metrics'=>('ga:visits'), 'sort'=>'-ga:visits' ) ); Now you know how this API class works, i'd like to adress my problem. Speed. It takes alot of time to retrieve multiple types of data from the analytics database, especially if you're building different arrays with different metrics/dimensions. How can i speed up this process? Is it possible to store all the possible data in a cache so i am able to retrieve the data without loading it over and over again?

    I am in a process of designing a client for a REST-ful web-service. What is the best way to go about representing the remote resource locally in my django application? For example if the API exposes resources such as: List of Cars Car Detail Car Search Dealership summary So far I have thought of two different approaches to take: Try to wrangle the django's models.Model to mimic the native feel of it. So I could try to get some class called Car to have methods like Car.objects.all() and such. This kind of breaks down on Car Search resources. Implement a Data Access Layer class, with custom methods like: Car.get_all() Car.get(id) CarSearch.search("blah") So I will be creating some custom looking classes. Has anyone encoutered a similar problem? Perhaps working with some external API's (i.e. twitter?) Any advice is welcome. PS: Please let me know if some part of question is confusing, as I had trouble putting it in precise terms.

  • Issue with Facebook JS API, revokeAuthorization

    I am trying to integrate FB connect into our user profile screen. Although, I'm having an issue with FB.ApiClient.revokeAuthorization. http://pastie.org/921942 The basic problem is that I revoke the auth at line 44 after the user clicks the disconnect button. After that, all subsequent API calls don't have a valid session to even check user status. I've tried wrapping blocks in a FB.Connect.forceSessionRefresh block, but then the code will never be called at all. I'm not sure what the proper workflow should be for this purpose. Right now it's basically... User arrives at profile NOT connected to the application. User clicks on the connect button. Once connected, DOM manipulation occurs to hide the connect button and add in a disconnect button. User clicks on the disconnect button. User's authorization to the application is revoked and (it seems) the API session to the FB server is invalidated. DOM manipulation occurs to hide the disconnect button and readd the connect button. User clicks on the connect button. Once connected, the FB.Connect.get_loggedInUser() don't return the actual user.

The API will not call my "getTileUrl" callback function.     whenever i use a open source library eg. Doctrine i always ending up coding a class (so called Facade) to use the Doctrine library. so next time i want to create a user i just type: $fields = array('name' => 'peter', 'email' => '[email protected]'); Doctrine_Facade::create_entity($entity, $fields); then it creates an entity with the provided information. so i guess, all coders will create their own "Facade". i wonder how usual it is with open source Facades to download and interact with the open source libraries? is this rare cause i haven't seen any of these. in some frameworks i have seen them called plugins, eg. plugins for twitter api or facebook api. so whenever you download a library, should you search for plugins/facades on the net, or is it better to just try coding your own? i just thought it would be great for everyone not to reinvent the wheel. thanks.

  • Trying to find a PHP5 API-based embeddable CMS

    I've been making the rounds for a CMS that I can use as an API, in a sort of "embedded" mode. I mean by this that I don't want the CMS to do any logic or presentation. I want it to be used as an API, which I can then use within an existing site. I don't want to be tied to the architecture of the CMS. A good example of this is NC-CMS (http://www.nconsulting.ca/nc-cms/). All it needs is an include at the top, then wherever editable content is desired it's only a function call with a unique label. It's also perfect in the sense that it allows to differentiate between small strings (like titles, labels) and texts (which require a rich-text editor). It's the only CMS I found that fits this description, but it is a little too light as it does not handle site structure. I need to be able to allow my client to add pages, choosing an existing template for the layout. A minimal back-end is required. Wordpress also fits some requirements in that it handles only content editing and allows freedom for the themes by letting them call the content where and how they want it. But it is article-based and backwards, in that it embeds sites (as themes) within its structure, rather than being embeddable in sites like NC. It's funny how checking out all the CMS out there, almost all of them claim that most CMS are not self-sufficient, that they do not handle application logic, while (almost) every single on I found with only one exception do so. Many are mostly article-based blog engines, which does not fit my need. I would appreciate any CMS that fits the general description.

  • API-based solutions for sending payments to people without bank accounts

    I'm looking for inexpensive ways to send payments to hundreds or thousands of individual contractors, even if they do not have a bank account. Currently I only need to support payment in the USA, but may eventually be international. Here's the scenario: I offer a service that allows an organization or manager-type person to coordinate contractors for very short term jobs. These jobs are typically only an hour or two in length. A contractor may get only one job over an entire month, several jobs spread out over a month, multiple jobs on a single day, or any other combination. Thus, a single contractor could earn as little as one job's payment up to potentially payment for dozens. Payment for a month could be as little as $10 up to $1000's. Right now, the system provides payroll reports to the manager and it is the manager's responsibility to produce checks, stuff envelopes, and send mail via the US postal service. I'd like to remove this burden from the manager and have all the payments taken care of for them automatically by the system. I'm not sure where to start or what the best options would be. I'm starting to look into the following solutions, but don't know specifics yet and would like some advice before pursuing them. I'd also like to hear about other ideas or suggestions. PayPal (Send Money, Adaptive Payments, x.com, other???) Amazon (Flexible Payments System?) Fund some sort of pre-paid debit card? Web service with API that mails checks for you? Direct deposit via a bank API (for users with bank accounts)? The problem is that many of these contractors may not be able to obtain bank accounts or credit cards within the USA. I don't mind doing a hybrid of solutions, but are there any that would work well with this issue? I want the solution to be easy to use for the contractors, meaning that they can get the money easily (via check in the mail, debit card ATM withdrawal, etc.)

    I am trying to figure out how to parse the Adword API query response without exceptions and one issue that i came across is that sometimes, the data itself contains comma besides the comma between each column. Say i do a query on Adroup, campaign and impression by using <reportDefinition xmlns="https://adwords.google.com/api/adwords/cm/v201209"> <selector> <fields>CampaignName</fields> <fields>AdgroupName</fields> <fields>Impressions</fields> <predicates> <field>Status</field> <operator>IN</operator> <values>ENABLED</values> <values>PAUSED</values> </predicates> </selector> <reportName>Custom Adgroup Performance Report</reportName> <reportType>ADGROUP_PERFORMANCE_REPORT</reportType> <dateRangeType>LAST_7_DAYS</dateRangeType> <downloadFormat>CSV</downloadFormat> </reportDefinition> Since my campaign has comma within the string like below: "Adroup,Campaign,Impressions, Premiun Beer, Beer, Chicago, 1000" where the adgroup is "premium beer" and campaign is "Beer,Chicago". that will cause an issue if we parse this information by using comma. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

Generally for profile picture I use ?type=large which returns a decent profile image but the type=large is not working in the case of photos from photo albums and also is there a way to get the photos in zip format from facebook once I specify the photo url as I want users to be able to download the photos.
