  • How to use NInject (or other DI / IoC container) with the model binder in ASP.NET MVC 2 ?

    Let's say I have an User entity and I would want to set it's CreationTime property in the constructor to DateTime.Now. But being a unit test adopter I don't want to access DateTime.Now directly but use an ITimeProvider : public class User { public User(ITimeProvider timeProvider) { // ... this.CreationTime = timeProvider.Now; } // ..... } public interface ITimeProvider { public DateTime Now { get; } } public class TimeProvider : ITimeProvider { public DateTime Now { get { return DateTime.Now; } } } I am using NInject 2 in my ASP.NET MVC 2.0 application. I have a UserController and two Create methods (one for GET and one for POST). The one for GET is straight forward but the one for POST is not so straight and not so forward :P because I need to mess with the model binder to tell it to get a reference of an implementation of ITimeProvider in order to be able to construct an user instance. public class UserController : Controller { [HttpGet] public ViewResult Create() { return View(); } [HttpPost] public ActionResult Create(User user) { // ... } } I would also like to be able to keep all the features of the default model binder.   • How to secure Add child record functionality in MVC on Parent's view?

    I'm trying to avoid some potential security issues as I expose some a new set of functionality into the real world. This is basically functionality that will allow for a new comment to be added via a partialview on the "Parent" page. My comment needs to know a couple of things, first what record is the comment for and secondly who is making the comment. I really don't like using a hidden field to store the ID for the Parent record in the add comment form as that can be easily changed with some DOM mods. How should I handle this?   • Authenticating to Google Search Appliance using Basic HTTP auth and ASP.NET (VB)

    I've run into a snag though which has to do with authentication between the Google Search Appliance and ASP. Normally, when asking for secure pages from the search appliance, the search appliance asks for credentials, then uses these credentials to try and access the secure results. If this attempt is successful, the page shows up in the results list. Since ASP is contacting the search appliance on the client's behalf, it will need to collect credentials and pass them along to the search appliance. I have tried a couple of different documented ways of accomplishing this, but they don't seem to work.   • Best strategy for moving data between physical tiers in ASP.net

    Building a new ASP.net application, and planning to separate DB, 'service' tier and Web/UI tier into separate physical layers. What is the best/easiest strategy to move serialized objects between the service tier and the UI tier? I was considering serializing POCOs into JSON using simple ASP.net pages to serve the middle tier. Meaning that the UI/Web tier will request data from a (hidden to the outside user) web server that will return a JSON string. This kind of JSON 'emitter' seems easily testable. It also seems easily compressible for efficiently moving data over the WAN between tiers. I know that some folks use .asmx webservices for this kind of task, but this seems like there is excess overhead with SOAP, and the package is not as human readable (testable) as POCOs serialized as JSON. Others are using more complex technology like WCF which we have never used. Does anyone have advice for choosing a method for moving data/objects between the data (db) tier and the web (UI) tier over the WAN using .net technologies? Thanks!!!

  • Design Pattern for error handling in ASP.NET 3.5 site

    I am relatively new to ASP.NET programming, and web programming in general. We have a site we recently ported from .NET 1.1 to 3.5. Currently we have two methods of error handling: either catching the error during data load on a page and displaying the formatted error in a label on the page, or redirecting to a generic error page. Both of these are somewhat annoying, as right now I'm trying to redesign how our errors are displayed. We are soon moving to Master pages, and I'm wondering if there is a way to "build in" an error handling control. What I mean by this is using a ASP.NET user control I've designed that simply gets passed the error string returned from the server. If an error occurs, the page would not display the content, and instead display the error control. This provides us with the ability to retain the current banner/navigation during an error (which we don't get with the generic error page), as well as keeping me from having to add the control to every aspx page we have (which I have to do with using the label-per-page system). Does something like this make sense? Ultimately I just want to have the error control added to a single page, and all other pages have access to it directly. Is this something Master pages help with? Thanks!

    This is happening when I try to create the entity using a Create style action in Asp.Net MVC 2. The POCO has the following properties: public int Id {get;set;} [Required] public string Message {get; set} On the creation of the entity, the Id is set automatically, so there is no need for it on the Create action. The ModelState says that "The Id field is required", but I haven't set that to be so. Is there something automatic going on here? EDIT - Reason Revealed The reason for the issue is answered by Brad Wilson via Paul Speranza in one of the comments below where he says (cheers Paul): You're providing a value for ID, you just didn't know you were. It's in the route data of the default route ("{controller}/{action}/{id}"), and its default value is the empty string, which isn't valid for an int. Use the [Bind] attribute on your action parameter to exclude ID. My default route was: new { controller = "Customer", action = "Edit", id = " " } // Parameter defaults EDIT - Update Model technique I actually changed the way I did this again by using TryUpdateModel and the exclude parameter array asscoiated with that.   • How would you organize this in asp.net mvc?

    I have an asp.net mvc 2.0 application that contains Areas/Modules like calendar, admin, etc... There may be cases where more than one area needs to access the same Repo, so I am not sure where to put the Data Access Layers and Repositories. First Option: Should I create Data Access Layer files (Linq to SQL in my case) with their accompanying Repositories for each area, so each area only contains the Tables, and Repositories needed by those areas. The benefit is that everything needed to run that module is one place, so it is more encapsulated (in my mind anyway). The downside is that I may have duplicate queries, because other modules may use the same query. Second Option Or, would it be better to place the DAL and Repositories outside the Area's and treat them as Global? The advantage is I won't have any duplicate queries, but I may be loading a lot of unnecessary queries and DAL tables up for certain modules. It is also more work to reuse or modify these modules for future projects (though the chance of reusing them is slim to none :)) Which option makes more sense? If someone has a better way I'd love to hear it. Thanks!

  • Using the StopWatch class to calculate the execution time of a block of code

      Many of the times while doing the performance tuning of some, class, webpage, component, control etc. we first measure the current time taken in the execution of that code. This helps in understanding the location in code which is actually causing the performance issue and also help in measuring the amount of improvement by making the changes. This measurement is very important as it helps us understand the problem in code, Helps us to write better code next time (as we have already learnt what kind of improvement can be made with different code) . Normally developers create 2 objects of the DateTime class. The exact time is collected before and after the code where the performance needs to be measured.  Next the difference between the two objects is used to know about the time spent in the code that is measured. Below is an example of the sample code.             DateTime dt1, dt2;             dt1 = DateTime.Now;             for (int i = 0; i < 1000000; i++)             {                 string str = "string";             }             dt2 = DateTime.Now;             TimeSpan ts = dt2.Subtract(dt1);             Console.WriteLine("Time Spent : " + ts.TotalMilliseconds.ToString());   The above code works great. But the dot net framework also provides for another way to capture the time spent on the code without doing much effort (creating 2 datetime object, timespan object etc..). We can use the inbuilt StopWatch class to get the exact time spent. Below is an example of the same work with the help of the StopWatch class.             Stopwatch sw = Stopwatch.StartNew();             for (int i = 0; i < 1000000; i++)             {                 string str = "string";             }             sw.Stop();             Console.WriteLine("Time Spent : " +sw.Elapsed.TotalMilliseconds.ToString());   [Note the StopWatch class resides in the System.Diagnostics namespace] If you use the StopWatch class the time taken for measuring the performance is much better, with very little effort.     We all know about Enums types and use them every single day. What is not that often used is to decorate the Enum type with the FlagsAttribute. When an Enum type has the FlagsAttribute we can assign multiple values to it and thus combine multiple information into a single enum. The enum values should be a power of two so that a bit set is achieved. Here is a typical Enum type: public enum OperationMode { /// <summary> /// No operation mode /// </summary> None = 0, /// <summary> /// Standard operation mode /// </summary> Standard = 1, /// <summary> /// Accept bubble requests mode /// </summary> Parent = 2 } In such scenario no values combination are possible.     I am trying to get Zend Framework working with netbeans, but every time there is the error "php.exe"' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. I am using WAMP server 2.0 it is installed in e:\wamp My Zend framework is inside e:\wamp\www\ZendFramework-1.10.5 I have located the ZendFramework script as: E:\wamp\www\ZendFramework-1.10.5\bin\zf.bat I am also registered the module. What am i doing wrong? I am running on Windows 7 32 bit, using NETbean 6.9 RC1
