  • optimizing any OS for maximum informix client/server performance

    - by Frank Developer
Is there any Informix documentation for optimizing any operating system where an ifx engine is running? For example, in Linux, strip-down to a bare minimum all unnecessary binaries, daemons, utilities, tune kernel parameters, optimize raw and cooked devices (hdparm), place swap space on beginning tracks of a disk, etc. Someday, maybe, Informix can create its own proprietary and dedicated PICK-like O/S to provide the most optimized environment for a standalone ifx server? The general idea is for the OS where ifx sits on have the smallest footprint and lowest overhead impact.

  • Efficiently solving sparse matrices

    - by anon
For solving spare matrices, in general, how big does the matrix have to be (as a rule of thumb) for methods like congraduate descent to be faster than brute force solvers (that do not take advantage o sparsity)?

  • EF exception: Could not find file CodeGenerationSchema.xsd

    - by DK
I'm using Entity Framework for a new project (VS 2008, .net 3.5 sp1) and "reasonably happy" with it, especially compared to dataset-based solutions. One of recurring annoyances is "Could not find file CodeGenerationSchema.xsd" exception during application startup. Exception seems to re-appear rather frequently after changes to the model. Googling gives temporary and strange workarounds for this error: Delete .suo file, or Set Options Debugging General Enable Just My Code = On May be someone have more permanent, straightforward fix or can explain the reason of this issue.

  • Memory Leak from Foundation & CFNetwork Library

    - by Lakshmie
I am using instruments to resolve memory leak issues for an app in iPhone. I just wanted to know if I have to resolve the leaks coming from Foundation and CFNetwork Libraries. Specifically, the leaks are from: 1. NSCFString 2. NSConcreteData 3. General Block-3584 Since they do not directly point to the code that I have written, how should I resolve them, if I have to? Thanks.

  • Getting events out of Facebook?

    - by RD
Is it possible to get event info from Facebook so the following is true: Add events that are not just your own events (i.e. search for general events and not just grab the events you have set as attended by your user) Specify criteria (e.g. get all events for one specific city) If this is possible, what should one use? where do you start?

  • C++: GUI libraries for embedding into an interpreter

    - by sub
I've got my interpreter up and running - quite bug-free and stable for now - now I want to add some visual options to my language to play around. What is a good GUI library easy to use and mainly easy to embed and "link" to my programming language? What general rules do I have to follow? I'm currently on XP with Microsoft Visual Studio 2010.

  • Will NKDbgPrintfW be compiled to nop in release build?

    - by Johann Gerell
I know about and have used the macros DEBUGMSG, RETAILMSG, ERRORMSG, that all take a condition parameter. For general formatted debug output, though, I want to use ::NKDbgPrintfW directly and wonder if someone knows if it compiles to a nop in optimised release builds or if my own macro wrapper around it with #ifdef DEBUG is still needed?

  • Should commit messages be written in present or past tense?

    - by user68759
So which is it that you think is better and more intuitive? Fixed the XXX bug in YYY Fix the XXX bug in YYY Fixes the XXX bug in YYY Fixing the XXX bug in YYY Please provide your rationales. Note I am asking from your general perspective, meaning you should not try to associate this with your preferred svn/cvs tools or programming languages, but rather think of it as something that should/can be applied to any tools and programming languages.

  • Patterns for wrapping a command line tool in another language

    - by Tom Duckering
I'm currently writing some Java to wrap around an extensive command line tool. It feels like I'm writing a lot of similar code. I'm wondering if there are any established patterns for wrapping command line tools - passing arguments and handling output and so on. Specific examples in Java would obviously be great, but any general suggestions or pointers are welcome too.

  • iphone: unrecognized selector sent to instance

    - by eshalev
    I am new to objective C, So maybe there is some basic thing that I am missing about selectors. I would like to understand the basic concept behind this error as I have not found an general error reference. I am getting this error when using: [CloseButton addTarget:PageContents action:@selector(CloseButtonPressed) forControlEvents:UIControlEventTouchUpInside]; and then later: - (void)CloseButtonPressed:(id)sender{ UIAlertView *someError = [[UIAlertView alloc] initWithTitle: @"Comment" message: @"hello" delegate: self cancelButtonTitle: @"Ok" otherButtonTitles: nil]; [someError show]; [someError release]; }

  • Display custom title bar in XML

    - by Casebash
In Android documentation describing "Configuring General Window Properties", it is suggested that specifying properties via XML is preferable whenever possible. As an example, instead of setting Window.FEATURE_NO_TITLE with requestWindowFeature, they set it to @android:style/Theme.NoTitleBar. Is there a similar way to set a custom title bar to be used in the XML?

  • Sliding Response after a Point-Square Collision

    - by mars
In general terms and pseudo-code, what would be the best way to have a collision response of sliding along a wall if the wall is actually just a part of an entire square that a point is colliding into? The collision test method used is a test to see if the point lies in the square. Should I divide the square into four lines and just calculate the shortest distance to the line and then move the point back that distance? If so, then how can I determine which edge of the square the point is closest to after collision?

  • Redirecting exec output to a buffer or file

    - by devin
I'm writing a C program where I fork(), exec(), and wait(). I'd like to take the output of the program I exec'ed to write it to file or buffer. For example, if I exec ls I want to write file1 file2 etc to buffer/file. I don't think there is a way to read stdout, so does that mean I have to use a pipe? Is there a general procedure here that I haven't been able to find?

  • List of drugs for sample data

    - by Skoder
Where can I find a list of common medical drugs? Researching and typing 150+ drug names would be quite inefficient. In general, are there any sites which have a list of items for developers to use in applications? For example, you can download dictionaries in specific formats (e.g. XML) for use in word games.

  • When should I opt for test driven development?

    - by VJ
My question is same as the title. I have not done Test driven development yet,I have performed unit testing and I am aware of testing in general but I hear it is much advantageous to follow TDD?. So should I opt for it everytime or are there some preconditions... i just need to know some basic or important requirements when i should opt for TDD. Sorry if this question is too trivial.

  • How to process large block data visualization with Flex?

    - by hydra1983
I know that's a big topic. However, it's better to know some general ideas to handle such problems. I have an application which requires Flex to render statistics data calculated instantly on the client side from a downloaded data set. The problems are: the data set is large and needs more than 10 seconds to be downloaded. there are some filters to control the statistics calculation algorithms. If user changes the filters, it would take a long time to recalculate the result and freeze the UI.

  • How significant are JPA lazy loading performance benefits?

    - by Robert
I understand that this is highly specific to the concrete application, but I'm just wondering what's the general opinion, or at least some personal experiences on the issue. I have an aversion towards the 'open session in view' pattern, so to avoid it, I'm thinking about simply fetching everything small eagerly, and using queries in the service layer to fetch larger stuff. Has anyone used this and regretted it? And is there maybe some elegant solution to lazy loading in the view layer that I'm not aware of?
