  • How to scan and annotate documents and receipts so metadata is searchable and embeddeded in document

    I'm getting tired of living in the modern age and still having a messy filing cabinet full of paper. I have a nice cheap scanner and want to scan receipts, warrenties, and so forth. To make it possible to find these, I'd like to make them searchable via Windows Search (or google desktop search). Because I'm lazy with backups, I want a file format that embeds metadata into the file. Backups should be as simple as coping a bunch of image files around. I'm also cheap, and am not going to install an expensive solution. I'm hoping one of the basic formats can do this. So, what common scannable format satisfies: searchable and and metadata embedded in image generated. The more "open" and portable the better.

    I have a site that is using Forms Auth. The client does not want the site session to expire at all for users. In the login page codebehind, the following code is used: // user passed validation FormsAuthentication.Initialize(); // grab the user's roles out of the database String strRole = AssignRoles(UserName.Text); // creates forms auth ticket with expiration date of 100 years from now and make it persistent FormsAuthenticationTicket fat = new FormsAuthenticationTicket(1, UserName.Text, DateTime.Now, DateTime.Now.AddYears(100), true, strRole, FormsAuthentication.FormsCookiePath); // create a cookie and throw the ticket in there, set expiration date to 100 years from now HttpCookie cookie = new HttpCookie(FormsAuthentication.FormsCookieName, FormsAuthentication.Encrypt(fat)) { Expires = DateTime.Now.AddYears(100) }; // add the cookie to the response queue Response.Cookies.Add(cookie); Response.Redirect(FormsAuthentication.GetRedirectUrl(UserName.Text, false)); The web.config file auth section looks like this: <authentication mode="Forms"> <forms name="APLOnlineCompliance" loginUrl="~/Login.aspx" defaultUrl="~/Course/CourseViewer.aspx" /> </authentication> When I log into the site I do see the cookie correctly being sent to the browser and passed back up: However, when I walk away for 20 minutes or so, come back and try to do anything on the site, the login window reappears. This solution was working for a while on our servers - now it's back. The problem doesn't occur on my local dev box running Cassini in VS2008. Any ideas on how to fix this?

During planning, evaluation, quality control, and disaster mitigation, the people having their say at each step means that successful database deployment is a carefully managed course of action. With so many factors involved at every stage, we would love to find a way for our software to help out, by simplifying processes, speeding them up or joining together the people and the steps that make it all happen. We’re hoping our new research group for database delivery (SQL Server and Oracle) will help us understand the views and experiences of those of you out there in the trenches managing database changes. As part of our new group, we’ll be running a variety of research sessions, including surveys and phone interviews, over coming months.   • SharePoint Item Event Receivers and Site Creation

    I have created an Item Event Receiver for a document library and I have test that the logic works correctly and it all does. The next thing I wanted to do is automatically create the list when a site is created so I added the list to the ONET.xml file for the site: <Lists> <List Title="Documents" Description="Documents " url="MyDocumentLibrary" Type="10002" FeatureId="CFD8504D-70EB-4ba2-9CCB-52E38DB39E60" QuickLaunchUrl="Docs/AllItems.aspx" /> </Lists> And I ensure that the feature for this list is also activated be adding the feature to the <WebFeatures> <Feature ID="CFD8504D-70EB-4ba2-9CCB-52E38DB39E60" /> </WebFeatures> The problem occurs after I create the site, when I add a document to the list the Item Event Receiver does not run. However if I manually for to the web site features and deactivate and then reactivate the feature the Item Event Receiver does run. It seems that when creating a list through the ONET.xml and activating the feature it does not bind the Item Event Receiver to the list. What is the work around for this? Is this a bug?

  • Windows Vista not indexing files

    I'm using Windows Vista's search index service to quickly launch programs by typing "windows key" +"name of program". However I'm having a hard time trying to understand why certain files won't appear. I want to launch "pageant.exe" located in "C:\Program Files\Putty" with this method but it doesn't show up in the results. In the index search options I said I wanted to index the "Start menu" and "C:\Program Files". I've checked that .exe files are indeed indexed and they are. I've also tried to completly rebuild the index with no luck. What am I doing wrong ?

  • Find edited Word attachment opened via Windows Mail (Vista)

    If you open (not save) a Word attachment in Windows Mail, then it will open the document up in Microsoft Word. This is saved somewhere, and you can edit the file and save it (i.e. no "save as" dialog appears). If you then close Word without explicitly saving the file somewhere, how do you then find the edited file? (Assuming that it can be found, and isn't automatically deleted). Windows Search does not find the file (presumably because it's in the folders that are excluded from search).

    What things should a programmer implementing the technical details of a web site address before making the site public? If Jeff Atwood can forget about HttpOnly cookies, sitemaps, and cross-site request forgeries all in the same site, what important thing could I be forgetting as well? I'm thinking about this from a web developer's perspective, such that someone else is creating the actual design and content for the site. So while usability and content may be more important than the platform, you the programmer have little say in that. What you do need to worry about is that your implementation of the platform is stable, performs well, is secure, and meets any other business goals (like not cost too much, take too long to build, and rank as well with Google as the content supports). Think of this from the perspective of a developer who's done some work for intranet-type applications in a fairly trusted environment, and is about to have his first shot and putting out a potentially popular site for the entire big bad world wide web. Also: I'm looking for something more specific than just a vague "web standards" response. I mean, HTML, JavaScript, and CSS over HTTP are pretty much a given, especially when I've already specified that you're a professional web developer. So going beyond that, Which standards? In what circumstances, and why? Provide a link to the standard's specification.   • Linear search vs Octree (Frustum cull)

    I am wondering whether I should look into implementing an octree of some kind. I have a very simple game which consists of a 3d plane for the floor. There are multiple objects scattered around on the ground, each one has an aabb in world space. Currently I just do a loop through the list of all these objects and check if its bounding box intersects with the frustum, it works great but I am wondering if if it would be a good investment in an octree. I only have max 512 of these objects on the map and they all contain bounding boxes. I am not sure if an octree would make it faster since I have so little objects in the scene.

    I have a folder contains files name as: xxx.get.txt and xxx.resp.txt xxx.get.txt, xxx.resp.txt yyy.get.txt, yyy.resp.txt zzz.get.txt, zzz.resp.txt, etc each prefix xxx should have two corresponding files, .get.txt and .resp.txt However, now I calculate the number of .get.txt and the number of .resp.txt files, they are not equal, there're ten more .get.txt. Despite some (apparent) improvements over the VS2008 behavior, in its current form it's even LESS usable than before.   • Windows 7 Slow Searching

    I have a new Windows 7 machine with twice as much RAM and a faster processor than my old Windows Server 2008 R2 Machine. I am disappointed that searching amongst my 10,000 image files takes twice as long on my new Windows 7 machine. Both machines have their own copy of these same files. In other respects e.g. opening my huge Outlook files, the new machine is faster. The Windows Search Service has started. And I set indexing on the image folder about 3 days ago. Any ideas why I suffer from this poor index / search experience? Other than adding / removing folders, is there anything I can do to tweak indexing?
