  3 Simple Things for Increased ProductivitySpeaker: Michael EatonTwitter: @mjeatonBlog: http://mjeaton.net/blog This was the first time I had seen Michael Eaton speak but have hear a lot of really good things about his speaking abilities. Needless to say I was really looking forward to his session. He basically addressed the topic of distractions and how they can decrease or increase your productivity as a developer. He makes the case that in order to become more productive you must block/limit all distractions. For example, he covered his top distractions as a developer. Top Distractions Social Media(Twitter, Reddit, Facebook) Wiki sites Phone Email Video Games Coworkers, Friends, Family Michael stated that he uses various types of music to help him block out these distractions in order for him to get into his coding zone. While he states that music works for him, he also notes that he knows of others that cannot really work with music. I have to say I am in the latter group because I require a quiet environment in order to work. A few session attendees also recommended listening to really loud white noise or music in another language other than your own. This allows for less focus to be placed on words being sung compared to the rhythmic beats being played. I have to say that I have not tried these suggestions yet but will in the near future. However, distractions can be very beneficial to productivity in that they give your mind a chance to relax and not think about the issues at hand. He spoke highly of taking vacations, and setting boundaries at work so that develops prevent the problem of burnout. One way he suggested that developer’s combat distractions is to use the Pomodoro technique. In his example he selects one task to do for 20 minutes and he can only do that task during that time. He ignores all other distractions until this task or time limit is complete. After it is completed he allows himself to relax and distract himself for another 5- 10 minutes before his next Pomodoro. This allows him to stay completely focused on a task and when the time is up he can then focus on other things.

• Running "Rebuild Index" maintenance plan with "Online indexing"

  Hi I am using Windows Server 2003 SP 2 and SQL Server 2005 Enterprise edition I am creating a "Rebuild Index" job for a particular database and I am successfully able to run the job. But when I try to enable the "Keep index online while rebuilding" option, the job does not execute successfully and throws out errors. I have attached the screenshots.   There is a new update for jtreg 4.1, b04, available. The primary changes have been to support faster and more reliable test runs, especially for tests in the jdk/ repository. [ For users inside Oracle, there is preliminary direct support for gathering code coverage data using jcov while running tests, and for generating a coverage report when all the tests have been run. ] -- jtreg can be downloaded from the OpenJDK jtreg page: http://openjdk.java.net/jtreg/. Scratch directories On platforms like Windows, if a test leaves a file open when the test is over, that can cause a problem for downstream tests, because the scratch directory cannot be emptied beforehand. This is addressed in agentvm mode by discarding any agents using that scratch directory and starting new agents using a new empty scratch directory. Successive directives use suffices _1, _2, etc. If you see such directories appearing in the work directory, that is an indication that files were left open in the preceding directory in the series. Locking support Some tests use shared system resources such as fixed port numbers. This causes a problem when running tests concurrently. So, you can now mark a directory such that all the tests within all such directories will be run sequentially, even if you use -concurrency:N on the command line to run the rest of the tests in parallel. This is seen as a short term solution: it is recommended that tests not use shared system resources whenever possible. If you are running multiple instances of jtreg on the same machine at the same time, you can use a new option -lock:file to specify a file to be used for file locking; otherwise, the locking will just be within the JVM used to run jtreg. "autovm mode" By default, if no options to the contrary are given on the command line, tests will be run in othervm mode. Now, a test suite can be marked so that the default execution mode is "agentvm" mode. In conjunction with this, you can now mark a directory such that all the tests within that directory will be run in "othervm" mode. Conceptually, this is equivalent to putting /othervm on every appropriate action on every test in that directory and any subdirectories. This is seen as a short term solution: it is recommended tests be adapted to use agentvm mode, or use "@run main/othervm" explicitly. Info in test result files The user name and jtreg version info are now stored in the properties near the beginning of the .jtr file. Build The makefiles used to build and test jtreg have been reorganized and simplified. jtreg is now using JT Harness version 4.4. Other jtreg provides access to GNOME_DESKTOP_SESSION_ID when set. jtreg ensures that shell tests are given an absolute path for the JDK under test. jtreg now honors the "first sentence rule" for the description given by @summary. jtreg saves the default locale before executing a test in samevm or agentvm mode, and restores it afterwards. Bug fixes jtreg tried to execute a test even if the compilation failed in agentvm mode because of a JVM crash. jtreg did not correctly handle the -compilejdk option. • New ZFSSA code release - April 2012

  A new version of the ZFSSA code was released over the weekend. In case you have missed a few, we are now on code 2011.1.2.1. This minor update is very important for our friends with the older SAS1 cards on the older 7x10 systems. This 2.1 minor release was made specifically for them, and fixes the issue that their SAS1 card had with the last major release. They can now go ahead and upgrade straight from the 2010.Q3.2.1 code directly to 2011.1.2.1. If you are on a 7x20 series, and already running 2011.1.2.0, there is no real reason why you need to upgrade to 1.2.1, as it's really only the Pandora SAS1 HBA fix. If you are not already on 1.2.0, then go ahead and upgrade all the way to 2011.1.2.1. I hope everyone out there is having a good April so far. • Election 2012: Twitter Breaks Records with MySQL

  Twitter VP of Infrastructure Operations Engineering Mazen Rawashdeh shared news and numbers yesterday on his blog: "Last night, the world tuned in to Twitter to share the election results as U.S. voters chose a president and settled many other campaigns. Throughout the day, people sent more than 31 million election-related Tweets (which contained certain key terms and relevant hashtags). And as results rolled in, we tracked the surge in election-related Tweets at 327,452 Tweets per minute (TPM). These numbers reflect the largest election-related Twitter conversation during our 6 years of existence, though they don’t capture the total volume of all Tweets yesterday." "Last night, Twitter averaged about 9,965 TPS from 8:11pm to 9:11pm PT, with a one-second peak of 15,107 TPS at 8:20pm PT and a one-minute peak of 874,560 TPM. Seeing a sustained peak over the course of an entire event is a change from the way people have previously turned to Twitter during live events. Now, rather than brief spikes, we are seeing sustained peaks for hours." Congrats to Jeremy Cole, Davi Arnaut and the rest of the team at Twitter for their excellent work! Jeremy recently held a keynote presentation at MySQL Connect describing how MySQL powers Twitter, and why they chose and continue to rely on MySQL for their operations.   The content has got more useful for me as a developer, and I've now seen 2 things which I think will make a big difference: Fake in vs2012 - allows me to stub or fake out libraries making unit testing easier/possible. C++ AMP & auto - auto might get me to start using c++ again (it makes code like for each much nicer/easier to write), while AMP is something I want to play with (moves the processing onto the GPU) The food got a little better, while there was less sign of the snacks.

• SQL Server: "This filegroup cannot be used as a backup destination" error when attempting restore

  When running a command like the following: "RESTORE FILELISTONLY FROM DISK='\\\\server\\folder\\DummyDB.bak'" I'm getting this error: Backup destination "\\server" supports a FILESTREAM filegroup. This filegroup cannot be used as a backup destination. Rerun the BACKUP statement with a valid backup destination. RESTORE FILELIST is terminating abnormally. Unless someone comes up with a better idea, it seems that the drive from which restore is being attempted must not contain any database file contained in a filegroup. Is that the case? Thanks in advance.

• Microsoft Patches Bugs, Improves Visual Studio 2012

  First, let's talk about the bug patches. Programs getting fixes include Windows, Internet Explorer, Office, the .NET Framework, Microsoft Dynamics AX and Microsoft Visual Basic. You can read the full security advisory. Out of the seven bulletins containing the fixes, three were deemed critical, which means a hacker could exploit an unpatched system by remotely executing malicious code. The remaining four were dubbed important; if exploited, they could give an attacker elevated privileges. Multiple versions of the Windows operating system and Internet Explorer should receive these patches....

• TechEd 2012 - last session

  Nearly over. For last session attending a talk on c++ apps in windows metro. When I came to TechEd I didn't think I would attend so many sessions on c++, but somehow this has proved more interesting this year. While .net 4.5 is interesting, been playing with it for a while now, so not a ton of surprises. Of course, i still want it at work, but who knows how long that will take - so will just have to use it at home. Once I get the licensing sorted out. So expensive. I've been pleasantly surprised with windows 8, and will be trying that out, and at least that is covered on technet. While the weather has not always been perfect during TechEd's, this is the worst I've seen it so far - it's wet outside. Next years conference in new Orleans should be interesting, well out of the conference itself that is. I do like conferences where it's held within the city itself, unlike Orlando where there isn't really anything here.

• Certain clients (IP range) can not ping server

  I just virtualized a Windows 2003 Server SP2 x32. The server contained our help desk server (Spiceworks) and our anti virus management server (ESET RAC). The host computer actually contained the virtualized server originally; I created the vhd and then I wiped this system clean and installed Windows 2008 R2 x64 Datacenter and added the virtualized 2003 onto the Hyper-V 2008 R2 Server. I got the server running fine except for... certain ip ranges. Local clients can get updates from the AV server from my 192.168.180.xxx & 192.168.181.xxx BUT NOT from any 192.168.182.xxx, 192.168.183.xxx, 192.168.184.xxx etc... I can not ping the server from any clients except for the 180. & 181. ranges. Now I created 2 other virtualized servers (win2008 & a win7 pro) and they exist on the same virtual host as the 2003 server. And at first I could not ping those until I went to the "\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings" and Turned On File and Print Sharing. Then I could ping and access those virtualized guests. Win2003 server isn't quite the same. But I am sure I have it on. But now when I ping from a client on one of those ranges that would not work I get this: As you can see the ping leaves our network. We have 2 ad/dns servers (one 180. & the other in the 181. range). Is it DNS? Both AD/DNS servers are Windows 2003. And we plan on upgrading both to 2008 R2 within a month or two but I need to fix this issue pronto (esp the AV end). btw, I did rename that 2003 Server (Spiceworks/AV) hostname. And I tried a CNAME. But I do not think that is the problem. EDIT: OR because this server existed on this hardware/computer before becoming virtualized?

• Post Crosstalk 2012

  This year the Oracle Retail users conference, Crosstalk, had a 20% increase in attendees, which was driven by both new customers and those acquired via Endeca.  As the product assets of Oracle have grown, so has the completeness of the solution set.  This year was marked by the breadth of omni-channel stories. Rose Spicer and her marketing team (see photo on left) always strive for an equal balance of retailer presentations, networking opportunities, and unique experiences -- this year was no exception.  We had 41 different retailers from China, Russia, South Africa, Brazil, Chile, US, Canada and the UK sharing their insights with one another. In all there were 251 executives from 120 iconic brands such as Daphne, Kohl's, Morrisons, Abercrombie & Fitch, Hot Topic, Talbots, Petco, Deckers, Sportmaster, Mr. Price, Falabella, and Disney to name a few. From a product perspective, there were a few new developments from Oracle Retail: Endeca's search engine has been integrated into the ATG commerce platform. The latest Retail Analytics application, Oracle Retail Customer Analytics, is generally available. Oracle Retail previewed a new fully-integrated mobile POS. But the real benefit of attending Crosstalk was hearing about the experiences of retailers and partners.  Here are are a few interesting facts I picked up: At Kohl's, the most popular website accessed by customers within their stores is Facebook.  With all the buzz about showrooming, I was really expecting it to be Amazon. Daphne, a Chinese shoe retailer, is opening 3 new stores per day.  Being located near the factories allows them to have a very agile supply chain as well. Disney Stores have increased sales by 25% at stores upgraded to include Mobile POS.  They continue to lead the pack with excellent customer experiences. Quicksilver reported that 1 in 5 visits to their website comes from a tablet.  More evidence that tablets are replacing traditional PCs in households. By tagging shoes with RFID, Saks is able to ensure all shoe models are on display.  If a model is not being displayed, it has no chance of being sold. Additionally, there were awards, store tours on Michigan Avenue, fireworks at Navy Pier, and the Oracle Retail house band, Bolo313, performing at Solider Field.  Speaking of which, a few retailers got on stage and jammed with band -- possible rival to Rock & Roll Retail? • Problem During Installation SQL Server 2005 on Windows 7

   Yesterday I was trying to install SQL Server 2005 on windows 7. During installation a popup error dialog shown with this message: The SQL Server service failed to start. For more information, see the SQL Server Books Online topics, "How to: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files" and "Starting SQL Server Manually. Here is the captured screen: But in books online there was no useful information! After some hours googling, I did not found any useful information and at 3 o'clock of midnight, I was scratching my head! Believe it, I attempted to install SQL Server more than 15 times with different manners (with command prompt & parameters and else). Eventually I found the resource of problem, that was "BitDefender Internet Security 2010"! After uninstalling BitDefender Internet Security, I installed SQL Server 2005 and then reinstalled BitDefender. Just that! Problem resolved. Conclusion: After installing a new version of windows and it's requirements (like IIS and language specifications & else), first install the SQL Server and the Visual Studio and then other applications.Hope be helpful.
