  • machine crash when connecting to external harddisk

    i recently had a problem with my laptop. when i booted up the machine, i would get a SMART failure error message and when i pressed F1 to continue, it would take a very long time to boot and it would come back to the same error message again. thinking that my hard disk was dying, i bought a new hard disk and installed on my laptop and so now my laptop is alright. however i need to recover data from that old hard disk, so i bought an external hard disk case and placed the old hard disk onto the case and connected to my laptop with USB. the first few times when i connected, i could see the files from the old hard disk and managed to copy some files over although it took extremely long to transfer. but now whenever i connect to the old hard disk, after a few minutes, my laptop will crash and re-boot. do you think my old hard disk is dead beyond repair? or you can offer some help here? any assistance would be appreciated!

  • What's the fastest way to store/access large files?

    I do a lot of video editing on my Mac and need a way to store very large (30 GB) files, and don't have room on my HD. A USB/Firewire external hard drive would work, but it seems way too slow for consistently working with such large files. I've also considered buying another computer, with a large hard drive, and putting it on the same network with a shared folder. What's the fastest / most efficient way to do this? Please consider USB 2.0 speeds, hard drive read times, ethernet speeds, etc. Are there other options I should consider?

    I wanted to take a sneak peak at Windows 7 so I thought of installing it. I have Windows Vista on my laptop which came pre-installed with it. I didnt want to mess with it. So I created a partition (20 GB) in my USB external hard disk and tried to install Windows 7 on that partition. But when I booted from Windows 7 DVD and selected the target partition on USB hard disk, it said it cannot be installed. Is there any way to install windows on external USB hard disk?

  • Help with Ubuntu and Windows, separate HDs

    Need some major help. Running a Dell XPS/Dimension 630i. It came with "SATA 2 RAID 0 With Dual 500GB Hard Drives." I have installed a new, third non-raided drive and installed Ubuntu on it. So now I have Windows on the original hard drive and Ubuntu Linux on the new HD. When I get to the boot menu where I can select an OS, if I select windows I get an error: "No such drive, no such disk." Also, strangely in the first place, in order to even get to the bootloader menu I have had to disable ALL ports under the RAID config. Unless I do this, I will just get to a never-ending blinking cursor. I have tried every conceivable CMOS config and nothing else works. Tried setting port 3 (the new HD w/ Ubuntu) to first hard disk boot priority. Tried disabling all other ports and enabling the Ubuntu HD port and vice versa.     Possible Duplicate: Clicks or ticks every minute when HDD is idle My HDD is a My passport... It's 2 weeks old. I hear this tick or click followed by another one about 8-9 secs later, and they repeat every minute almost exactly... They usually happen and the LED light blinking.. It's not like the other clicks you hear that indicate any inevitable HDD failure, it's much lower in volume. I don't know what that is, however it's different than the rest of the HDD usual sounds...It's close to the sound of the mouse click. It sometimes also happens when I access a file on the drive mostly after being idle for a while, sometimes randomly not really sure... The drive though is working well, the SMART report comes out OK and without warning, and disk management shows it healthy... What could be the cause of this??

  • Options for connecting an external disk to an old laptop

    I've tried connecting a 2.5" external drive to an old laptop which has only USB 1. The LED on the disk lights up, but the disk doesn't seem to spin up. Since the same disk works fine on a newer laptop my guess is that the old one doesn't output enough power on the USB port. Besides looking for an external drive with its own PSU, what would you suggest? Will one of those USB cables with two connectors work? What about a powered USB hub?

  • How to upgrade OS on Mac Mini with external USB Drive?

    We have a G4 Mac Mini, circa 2005, running Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, and we want to upgrade to 10.5 Leopard. We have a Leopard install disk, but the optical drive in this mini is broken. So we transferred the install disk image to a USB HDD, but now we can't figure out how to boot off it. From what I've read in Mac forums, some PPC Macs, including some G4's, have been able to boot from USB, even though it sounds like this wasn't officially supported, and it may well depend on the specific model of USB drive and Mac. My Mac says CPU is "PowerPC G4 (1.2)" and Boot ROM is "4.8.9f4". I was hoping I might just find somebody here who had that same Mac Mini and find out if they could make it work. I'd especially like to know any specifics about the USB drive they found success with. Any insights at all would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Automatically distinguish difference between multiple HDDs in linux?

    I'm running Ubuntu Server 9.10. I have two external USB HDDs. I use them each for different backup reasons. So certain data gets stored on one HDD, and different information gets stored on the other HDD. I want to make a script that can look at the external HDD can determine which HDD it is, so that it can copy the proper information to it. Is there a way for Linux to determine this? Like if I see one HDD as /dev/sdc1, then unplug it and plug in the other HDD, should Linux see it as /dev/sdd1 or will it be /dev/sdc1? I'm a bit of a Linux newb and I don't quite understand how it determines the /dev/sdxx values that it assigns to drives.

  • How to get data out of a Maxtor Shared Storage II that fails to boot?

    I've got a Maxtor Shared Storage II (RAID1 mode) which has developed some hardware failure, apparently: it fails to boot properly and is unreachable via network. When powering it on, it keeps making clunking/chirping disk noise and then sort of resets itself (with a flash of orange light in the usually-green LEDs); it then repeats this as if stuck in a loop. In fact, even the power button does nothing now – the only way I can affect the device at all is to plug in or pull out the power cord! (To be clear, I've come to regard this piece of garbage (which cost about 460 €) as my worst tech purchase ever. Even before this failure I had encountered many annoyances about the drive: 1) the software to manage it is rather crappy; 2) it is way noisier that what this type of device should be; 3) when your Mac comes out of sleep, Maxtor's "EasyManage" cannot re-mount the drive automatically.) Anyway, the question at hand is how to get my data out of it? As a very concrete first step, is there a way to open this thing without breaking the plastic casing into pieces? It is far from obvious to me how to get beyond this stage; it opens a little from one end but not from the other. If I somehow got the disks out, I could try mounting the disk(s) on one of the Macs or Linux boxes I have available (although I don't know yet if I'd need some adapters for that). (NB: for the purposes of this question, never mind any warranty or replacement issues – that's secondary to recovering the data.)

  • Can't access files on external drive after reformatting Macbook Pro

    I recently had to reformat my Macbook Pro, and imported my account and settings from Time Machine via the Migration Assistant. Everything on the Mac itself is fine, but now I don't have permission to access almost everything on my external drive. A number of folders have the little red 'no access' sign on them and I can't rename or move anything. Looking at the info for these files, it appears that access rights were attached only to my old user account. Is there some way to reassign these files and folders to my new user account? Thanks.

    I would like to know if anyone has had any success in getting and external 2.5" IDE hard drive in an external case (w/USB cable) working when plugged into a PCMCIA USB card. My hard drive doesn't work when plugged into my HT-Link Cardbus/PCMCIA USB 2.0 2-port card (NEC / 32-bit). My MP3 player will work fine when plugged into it. I tried plugging in both of the USB cables that are one one end (Y cable), and it doesn't make a difference. I read the problem may be insufficient power.

  • Trying to turn an WD Mybook 1TB to slave drive in PC

    Yes I realise that most external Hard Drives would not be transitioned into internal sitting Hard Drives, but unfortunately we broke the miniUSB connection that transfers the data from external Hard Drive to laptop. What we are TRYING to do now, is get the WD MyBook 1TB to funtion alongside (preferably as SLAVE) to my currently exsisting Desktop Hard Drive. both are SATA drives. We have the SATA power, and Data cables, and these are in place (but - somehow NOT working) - Help please - I am not computer illeterate, just don't know how to switch this so it works. How do I turn one into master, and the newer one (that was external) into the slave drive?

  • Bad HD and robocopy

    After my HD gave me crc errors I wanted to copy one drive to another and picked up a new 1TB hd. I am using the command robocopy G: J: /MIR /COPYALL /ZB First it tried copying the file a few times (i didnt count, its not in my window anymore) and got an access denied error, error 5. Then it tried again and locked up. I tried copying that specific file (14mb) and windows says "cant read from source file or disk". I started robocopy again. Hopefully it will ignore it after a fail attempt or two but what options can i use to say if it doesnt work continue to the next file. It looked like that is what it was doing but for this last one it repeated more then 4times and locked up finally. I'm open to other copy solutions. I do prefer built in solutions. I am using windows 7 Also how might i do this without the /MIR option. Is /S /E good enough? flag reference here -edit- i see i can control retries with /R: but i am still open to alternative solutions.

    I use carbonite to back up my PC (Windows XP). We were running low on disk space on our home PC (down to 15 gig) so I went out and purchased an external hard drive. However, Carbonite will not back it up. I just want the external drive to be extra disk space. From their FAQ: The current version of Carbonite backs up only the files that reside on permanent hard drives on your computer. It will not back up network drives, external drives, and NAS (network accessed storage) drives. If there are files on a remote drive that you wish to include in your Carbonite backup, you should copy the files to a folder on your local hard drive. If the files are on a shared network drive, you could install Carbonite on the computer on which the network shared drive physically exists, and back the files up directly from that computer. Check back soon for a Carbonite service plan that will allow you to back up your external drives.

  • External HDD incorrectly detected as internal - how change to enable hot swap/eject?

    Hi All, I have win 7 x64 Home Prem. The HDD is a seagate barracuda, 7200.7 ST3120827AS. 3.5", Serial: 3ms006n6, Firmware: 3.42 (no further updates) NexStar CX External case (drivers installed). I have three drives: WD320 with OS installed WD750 data storage (internal) seagate 120 (external) - connected via esata board connected to sata on motherboard (MSI p43 neo) Tried uninstalling HDD in device manager to no effect. Also the internal WD750 is detected as an external drive and win taskbar icon allows for it to be ejected (unlike the seagate). All drives are configured - Online, Simple, Basic, NTFS, Active, Primary Partition (except c drive). The seagate was previously used as a primary disk with XP operating system so I deleted the volume and created/reformatted (not quick). HDD is no longer "Active". But did not fix problem. Background Originally, I installed win 7 with the bios set to IDE and forgot to install the chipset drivers. Then I changed win 7 to install the AHCI drivers, changed the bios to AHCI and rebooted. Win 7 loaded drivers but WD HDD gave problems/crashed. I installed chipset drivers and latest intell storage matrix software thingie (in safe mode). Everything worked fine after that except for the problem of not corrrectly detecting the external drive] I have noticed that under the driver properties (and similarly in the registry) the two drives are configured differently (e.g. in driver details property capabilities for the WD the value is set to 0000006, CM_DEVCAP_REMOVABLE & EJECTSUPPORTED - whereas the seagate shows 0000080 & CM_DEVCAP_SURPRISEREMOVALOK). Any easy way to configure things?   • Step by step instructions to make dos "see" and "access" usb hard drives

    I am stuck with an USB external hard drive (Maxtor 1 Touch) 750GB that crashed. I have photos and home movies (my son's birth, first birthday etc) that are very important to me. I am given to understand that Spinrite is a very good tool to use, but It does not come "with out of the box" capabilities to access USB drives. If I open the case to get the HDD out from my External HDD, I would compromise the warrenty and I would not be able to exchange the Drive. I have done a bit of research and have the drivers that could help. But the bit I am missing is, How to put it all together. I would really appreciate it if some one can give me step by step instruction where I can create a dos boot cd that can load the drivers and assign a drive letter to it so that I can make Dos "See" the external hard drive. I have a Toshiba satellite laptop that runs Windows XP (Home). It does not have a floppy drive. I will be greatful to your help in the regard.

  • Running a VM off of an external HD via USB

    Is it viable to run (i.e. reference the vmx/vhd directly from the mounted drive) a VM (vmware running Windows Seven) off of an external HD via USB? I mean, I know it's possible, but I guess I'm asking if USB provides enough bandwidth for normal usage... If so, are there any particular brands that may be better or worse? I know that ESATA would be a more viable setup, but my laptop doesn't have an ESATA port. Currently I use the VM to segregate all of my work development servers and software from my main machine; so I will be running all development servers and tools on the VM directly.

    I'm thinking of buying a drive dock to put my unused large HDD to use. I will also probably use the dock to backup files and swap the drives regularly. I have a few questions though: Are they noisy? I plan to use them via USB (because I don't think I have eSata connectors), am I gonna want to kill myself every time I backup? (I know it's supposed to be 480 Mbps, but how realistic is this?) Do you recommend a particular model? (I was thinking about this Startech HDD dock) Thank you

  • Windows Boot disc to save files?

    Somehow after updating my legit windows 7 OS with no pirated or mod software on my PC i was welcome to a black screen. I popped in my ghost disc and copied the files i need to an external HD. IIRC windows 7 disc can do that too. Problem with the way i did it on ghost was it excepted me to select 1 file (an HD disc image) so i couldnt select multiple folders to move. Also when i did move i had no idea if it finished or how long it would take. My linux live cd couldnt access the HD. Anyways, is there a disc i can use to easily copy files from my laptop to my external HD? I think ghost, windows 7 and windows server all allow me but is there one that is better suited to copy files?

  • Having problems with Grub2 booting Ubuntu from my External Hard Drive

    I installed Ubuntu on my external hard drive but it won't boot on my laptop. what do i do? i did some reading and traced the source of the problem to grub2. Apparently, grub2 doesn't use the device's UUID, and uses the linux directory instead (/dev/sdf2). This means that whenever i plug my E-HDD into a system that has a different number of drives connected to it, i won't be able to boot without editting the boot command. I don't understand it too well but that's what i got from what i read. Is there anyway to fix this?
