• One of the partion on a usb harddisk cannot automount

  It is a very strange problem. My usb harddisk has four partitions, one is primary, the other three are logical (contained within an extended partition). When I plug in the disk, three of the partitions are mounted automatically except one--the first logical partition in the extended partition. Initially I thought it is the problem of system (at that time I used Mint). But after I change to Ubuntu 12.04, the problem wasn't solved. I don't want to add a rule in fstab, and I want to know what happened. • Configuring Linux Network

  Hi I'm working on some software, that runs on a Centos 5.xx installation. I'ts not allowed for our customers to log in to Linux, everything is done from Windows applications, developed by us. So we have build a frontend for the user to configure network setup: Static/DHCP, ip-address, gateway, DNS, Hostname. Right now I let the user enter the information in the Windows app, and then write it on the Linux server like this: Write to /etc/resolv.conf: Nameserver Write to /etc/sysconfig/network: Gateway and Hostname Write to /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0: Ipaddress, Netmask, Bootproto(DHCP or Static) I also (after some time) found out that I was unable to send mail, unless I wrote in /etc/hosts: 127.0.0.1 Hostname All this seems to work, but is there a better/easier way to do this? Also, I read the network configuration nearly the same way, but if I use DHCP, I miss som information, for instance the Ip-address. I know that I can get some information from the commandline (ifconfig), but I dont get for instance Hostname, Gateway and DNS. Is there a commandline tool that will display this?

• MegaCli newly created disk doesn't appear under /dev/sdX

  After having successfully added 2 new disks in a new RAID virtual drive (background initialization done), I would have exepected it to appear under /dev/sdh but it's not there (so, unusable). The system is running a CentOS 5.2 64 bits, HAL and udev daemons are running, not records of any sdh apparition under the messsage log file or in dmesg, only MegaCli do see that virtual drive. Any idea ? • RAID 1 not performing as expected

  I recently bought a new 320Gb hard drive for my computer to set up RAID 1 on it for some added security. Installation went as smooth as could possibly be (plug in power, plug in data cable, start up computer, Intel software recognized new drive, right click create RAID 1, done!). However, for some inexplicable reason, I seem to have strange test results when using BENCH32. On my old configuration, a single 7200 rpm drive, I achieved about 60 MB/s write and 70 MB/s read. With a new RAID 1 configuration, I would expect the write to be slightly diminished but read to be significantly improved (though not exactly double speed). However, with the new configuration, I am getting 90 MB/s write and only about 80 MB/s read. I should NOT be getting improved write performance, especially NOT better than read! What's going on? My system setup is: q6600 2.4ghz CPU 4Gb DDR2 667mhz RAM on board Intel ICH9R "RAID chip" 2x Seagate 7200 RPM 320GB drives in RAID 1 Widows 7 home premium 64-bit

• On Windows Server 2003, permissions are not propagating to a group that is a member of a group

  Windows Server 2003 on i386. FTP server is running as the SYSTEM user/group. Some files we want served (read and write) are owned by the group 'ftp.' ftp has full read/write/whatever permissions on those files and directories. SYSTEM can't read/write those directories. So, I added SYSTEM to the 'ftp' group. Windows happily complied, but even after restarting Filezilla, it still could not read/write those files. Is there any way to do what we want without "re-permissioning" all those files? Running the ftp server as 'ftp' isn't really an option because it also serves files that are owned by SYSTEM (And not ftp). Sigh... :) Any insights?

• Hard Disk Not Counting Reallocated Sectors

  I have a drive that is reporting that the current pending sectors is "45". I have used badblocks to identify the sectors and I have been trying to write zeros to them with dd. From what I understand, when I attempt writing data directly to the bad sectors, it should trigger a reallocation, reducing current pending sectors by one and increasing the reallocated sector count. However, on this disk both Reallocated_Sector_Ct and Reallocated_Event_Count raw values are 0, and dd fails with I/O errors when I attempt to write zeros to the bad sectors. dd works fine, however, when I write to a good sector. # dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb bs=512 count=1 seek=217152 dd: error writing ‘/dev/sdb’: Input/output error Does this mean that my drive, in some way, has no spare sectors to be used for reallocation? Is my drive just in general a terrible person? (The drive isn't actually mine, I'm helping a friend out. They might have just gotten a cheap drive or something.) However, Reallocated_Sector_Ct and Reallocated_Event_Count are still zero, and dd is now able to write data to the sectors it was previously unable to. This leads me with several other questions: Why aren't the reallocations being recored by the disk? I'm assuming the reallocation took place as I can now write data directly to the sector and couldn't before. Why did shred cause reallocation and not dd? Does the fact that shred writes random data instead of just zeros make a difference?

  hi guys, I got a gift from a friend, 2 readers for RFID, and some cards (from a Chinese company called daily rfid), the kind of work, because it comes with some demo software written in Delphi, that reads the id of the card (myfare compatible, ISO14443A ) but the problem is that if I try to use the demo to write to them, it doesnt seem to work, it have another demo written in c#, (compiled and executable from /bin/debug, the DL600DemoCSharp.exe), the software opens, but when click on connect, I get this error Unhanded exception.. unable to load DLL 'BasicB.DLL' so I load the dll on windows/system32, but when I try regsvr32 BasicB.dll I get, error the module "BasicB.dll" was loaded but hte entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found. Make sure that "BasicB.dll" is a valid DLL or OCX file and then try again have written to the company but no response, I program in objective C, so I kind of understand c#, but how to make this cards work? - shall I continue with the delphi, and try to write to them with it - or with c# - either way I would have to write the code to read write to them,, or is there any software to work with this modules?? thanks a lot!

• Copy to USB memory stick really slow?

  When I copy files to the USB device, it takes much longer than in windows (same usb device, same port) it's faster than USB 1.0 speeds (1MB/s) but much slower than USB 2.0 speeds (12MB/s). To copy 1.8GB takes me over 10 minutes (it should be < 3 min.) I have two identical SanDisk Cruzer 8GB sticks, and I have the same problem with both. I have a super talent 32GB USB SSD in the neighboring port and it works at expected speeds. The problem I seem to see in the GUI is that the progress bar goes to 90% almost instantly, completes to 100% a little slower and then hangs there for 10 minutes. Interrupting the copy at this point seems to result in corruption at the tail end of the file. If I wait for it to complete the copy is successful. • FTP Error 550 when trying to access a folder via symbolic link

  I'm configuring svftp on a linux machine. At the moment local users can login via ftp and they will see listened their home dir. They have write acces to it. No I want the users to write in de /var/www/ dir. Therefore I created an new group apache. Added users to the group and gave the group write access to /var/www. Via the terminal all users can write .var/www/. I created a link in the home directory to /var/www via ln -s /var/www/ /home/user/www ls gives: drwxr-xr-x 2 orangetux orangetux 4096 Jun 23 15:06 ftp lrwxrwxrwx 1 orangetux orangetux 21 Jun 23 15:00 www -> /var/www/ But when I use FTP I see the link but I cannot follow it. Error 550 which means file not found or bad access. How can I solve this, so that the users have access to /var/www via their home dir?

• Extending partition on linux gparted but not more space in the vm

  I have a vm test installation of a linux running a build server. Unfortunately I just pressed ok when adding the disk and ended up with an 8gb drive to play with. Well into the test the builds are consuming more and more space, of course. The vm drive was resized to 21gb and using gparted I expanded the drive partitions and that all worked fine but when I go back into the console and do df there's still only 8gb available.   I want to monitor CPU usage, disk read/write usage for a particular process, say ./myprocess. To monitor CPU top command seems to be a nice option and for read and write iotop seems to be a handy one. For example to monitor read/write for every second i use the command iotop -tbod1 | grep "myprocess". My difficulty is I just want only three variables to store, namely read/sec, write/sec, cpu usage/sec. Could you help me with a script that combines the outputs the above said three variables from top and iotop to be stored into a log file? Thanks!

• Accessing Oracle 6i and 9i/10g Databases using C#

Within the NAnt task is a C# script which prompts the developer for database credentials (username, password, database) in order to compile the forms and reports. I want to then run these credentials against the relevant database to ensure the credentials entered are correct and, if they are not, prompt the user to re-enter their credentials. However, as mentioned in the link, Microsoft is discontinuing support for this so it is not a desireable solution. I have also fonud that Oracle provides its own classes for connecting to Oracle databases clicky. However, this only seems to support connecting to Oracle 9 or newer databases (clicky) so it is not feasible solution as I also need to connect to Oracle 6i databases. I could achieve this by calling a bat script from within the C# script, but I would much prefer to have a single build file for simplicity. • Time complexity for Search and Insert operation in sorted and unsorted arrays that includes duplicat

  1-)For sorted array I have used Binary Search. We know that the worst case complexity for SEARCH operation in sorted array is O(lg N), if we use Binary Search, where N are the number of items in an array. What is the worst case complexity for the search operation in the array that includes duplicate values, using binary search?? Will it be the be the same O(lg N)?? Please correct me if I am wrong!! Also what is the worst case for INSERT operation in sorted array using binary search?? My guess is O(N).... is that right?? 2-) For unsorted array I have used Linear search. Now we have an unsorted array that also accepts duplicate element/values. What are the best worst case complexity for both SEARCH and INSERT operation. I think that we can use linear search that will give us O(N) worst case time for both search and delete operations. Can we do better than this for unsorted array and does the complexity changes if we accepts duplicates in the array.

• Disassembling with python - no easy solution?

  Hi, I'm trying to create a python script that will disassemble a binary (a Windows exe to be precise) and analyze its code. I need the ability to take a certain buffer, and extract some sort of struct containing information about the instructions in it. I've worked with libdisasm in C before, and I found it's interface quite intuitive and comfortable. The problem is, its Python interface is available only through SWIG, and I can't get it to compile properly under Windows. At the availability aspect, diStorm provides a nice out-of-the-box interface, but it provides only the Mnemonic of each instruction, and not a binary struct with enumerations defining instruction type and what not. This is quite uncomfortable for my purpose, and will require a lot of what I see as spent time wrapping the interface to make it fit my needs. I've also looked at BeaEngine, which does in fact provide the output I need, a struct with binary info concerning each instruction, but its interface is really odd and counter-intuitive, and it crashes pretty much instantly when provided with wrong arguments. The CTypes sort of ultimate-death-to-your-python crashes. So, I'd be happy to hear about other solutions, which are a little less time consuming than messing around with djgcc or mingw to make SWIGed libdisasm, or writing an OOP wrapper for diStorm. If anyone has some guidance as to how to compile SWIGed libdisasm, or better yet, a compiled binary (pyd or dll+py), I'd love to hear/have it. :) Thanks ahead.
