• F5 irule with RESTful services

  I'm trying to come up with a rule on our F5 to direct traffic to our Tomcat server appropriately. We are deploying separate WAR files for each RESTful service. So, we would like to have the following URIs as an example: /services/quiz/01234/ /services/user/54321/ Where 'quiz' and 'user' are quiz.war and user.war respectively. We want to direct the traffic at the F5 level for /services/ to be the root and the rest of the URI to be directed to the Tomcat server. How do we accomplish this? Edit The browser url for a resource would look like http://www.domain.com/services/quiz/01234/ I want BIG-IP to send the request to tomcat as http://tomcatserver:8080/quiz/01234/ so basically remove /services and append everything after it to the tomcat domain. I would think this would be an easy regex, right?

• iPhone OS: Posting an image + text "story" to a user's news feed through the facebook api

  So what I am trying to do is post an image that has been created by a user on an iphone into that users newsfeed. The functionality I am having a hard time understanding if it is possible: Can I pass a local NSURL (or URL?)(to a png file that lives in the documents folder) through a JSON string and onto Facebook? i want to mimic the action of a user going to his/her facebook page, clicking into the textfield for their newsfeeld, uploading an image by clicking the "photos" icon and selecting an image from a local disk and uploading it. I would also like to add some text into the post optionally. I'm just getting started with the Facebook api and it seems pretty tough right now, any help would be appreciated. code examples appreciated. Thanks, Nick

• How do I create a random method name

  I plan on using JSONP to call an external webservice to get around the fact that I dont want to create a global function that could potentially conflict with the calling page. I thought that creating a random function name and passing it up would work. • How to set response header in JAX-RS so that user sees download popup for Excel?

  I wrote code that generate Excel file using REST JAX-RS and I confirmed that the generated Excel file is in GlassFish server directory. But my goal is when user click on the button (which generate Excel .xls), I want download popup to show up asking user whether to save or open the .xls file just like any other web services doing for downloading any type of files. According to my search, the step is: generate Excel .xls (DONE) write the excel to stream in JAX-RS file, set response header to something like, String fileName = "Blah_Report.xls"; response.setHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment; filename=" + fileName); My question is I'm doing all of this in JAX-RS file and I don't have HttpServletResponse object available. According to the answer from Add Response Header to JAX-RS Webservice He says: You can inject a reference to the actual HttpServletResponse via the @Context annotation in your webservice and use addHeader() etc. to add your header. I can't really figure what exactly that means without sample code..

  Hello, I use : Subsonic 3, SQL Server 2008, Json.Net Here is my problem : I have a house table with id,lot number, address, location, ownerid and an owner table with id,name, description. I'd like to get only the owner name and address of house where location is "San Francisco". How can I do this with Subsonic? My problem is I can only get a typed list or a datareader, I don't understand how to only get an array or a simple list. What is the best solution? Create a custom class ? Create a View ? Anything else ? My aim is to then serialize the data to send it back to my application, but serialization is seriously long because of the numerous relationships (My example here is simplified, there are indeed : house - owner - city - country etc.), whereas I need only 2 fields... • using javascript setTimeout to see if div has loaded

  I'm loading remote data using dynamic script tags and JSON. the remote page that I'm displaying on my website has a div in it that I use to load content into. The problem is the javascript functions do not see the div as the page loads because it is remote data. if I set a timeout of about 300 it usually works and my javascipt can see the div. But sometimes it takes longer and it breaks the javascript. I'm tring this: function load_content() { if(document.getElementById('remote_div')==null) { setTimeout('load_content()', 300); } else { document.getElementById('remote_div').innerHTML = 'Content goes here' } } but it just doesn't seem to work... what is wrong with it?

  In regard to this question I am curious how one can do post-request REST processing a la (crude): def postProcessor[T](content: T) = { request match { case Accepts.Json() => asJson(content) case Accepts.Xml() => asXml(content) case _ => content } } overriding onRouteRequest in Global config does not appear to provide access to body of the response, so it would seem that Action composition is the way to go to intercept the response and do post-processing task(s). Question: is this a good idea, or is it better to do content-type casting directly within a controller (or other class) method where the type to cast is known? Currently I'm doing this kind of thing everywhere: toJson( i18n("account not found") ) toJson( Map('orderNum-> orderNum) ) while I'd like the toJson/toXml conversion to happen based on accepts header post-request.

• Best practice for partial updates in a RESTful service

  I am writing a RESTful service for a customer management system and I am trying to find the best practice for updating records partially. For example, I want the caller to be able to read the full record with a GET request. But for updating it only certain operations on the record are allowed, like change the status from ENABLED to DISABLED. (I have more complex scenarios than this) I don't want the caller to submit the entire record with just the updated field for security reasons (it also feels like overkill). Is there a recommended way of constructing the URIs? Do I use GET, POST, PUT or is there no agreed way of doing these kind of things? When reading the REST books RPC style calls seem to be frowned upon. Thanks Frank

  Hi, I have a python app engine code (matured backend) - and we are now planning to have a front end for that code. I was wondering whether it is possible to implement GWT as the front end. Even though Alex Martelli in this post [1] mentions it is not possible, a comment to that post suggests that it is indeed possible using rpc over json for GWT. I was unable to understand how this is possible. In app.yaml file, we have to specify the language to be python, right? In that case, how can it compile GWT based on JAVA? Are there any examples on anyone doing that? Can someone help me out? It would be extremely helpful. • Python - Using "Google AJAX Search" API's Local Search Objects

  Hi! I've just started using Google's search API to find addresses and the distances between those addresses. I used geopy for this, but, I often had the problem of not getting the correct addresses for my queries. I decided to experiment, therefore, with Google's "Local Search" (http://code.google.com/apis/ajaxsearch/local.html). Anyway, I wanted to ask if I could use the "Local Search" objects provided by the API within python. Something tells me that I can't and that I have to use json. Does anyone know if there is a work around? PS: Im trying to make something like this: http://www.google.com/uds/samples/random/lead.html ... except a matrix type deal where the insides will be filled with distances between the addresses.   I am building a framework that will validate forms both client-side (javascript) and server-side based on a form requirements specification written in json. The purpose is to get rid of logically equivalent code on the server and client to make the code more maintainable, faster to write, and less buggy. • Using XTemplate with SimpleStore in Ext

  I am currently adding some functionality to some old code. There used to be a template which took a flat array of items and spat out some HTML, now the data is coming from a simple store which reads some JSON.. var allwords = [ ['abacteriano', 'abacteriano'], ['abacterial', 'abacteriano'], ['abciximab', 'abciximab'], etc.. So my simplestore goes like this: termStore = new Ext.data.SimpleStore({ fields: ['term', 'lookup'], data: allwords }); This definitly works fine as I use the termStore in a combobox. However I am having difficulty getting it to play with an XTemplate. It seems the syntax in extjs doesn't play well with SO, so this bit wont be in a code block... So I guess I'll describe it :p Essentially its a simple template which tries to get values out of the passed collection by doing {term} I then try and apply it by doing: tpl.overwrite(Ext.get("contentbox"), termStore); This gives me a JS error of "invalid object initializer"

I wanted both branch2 and branch3 to alert 123 so I have something to start with. But currently this alerts branch2 and branch3 instead of 123. I have little experience with creating dynamic variables/objects can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong or maybe another approach towards solving this?

  I am designing a REST API for a web application. I want to clearly version the API so that the interface can be changed in future without breaking existing services. So in my v1.0 API I want to clearly identify it as the v1.0 API, leaving me the freedom to release a future v1.1 version with breaking changes. My question is, would a period in the path component of a URI be bad practice? eg. Is there any good reason not to use http://mysite.com/myapi/v1.0/services as a URI to my service?

  Hi, i googled for an hour now but maybe my Google-Fu is just too weak, i couldn't find a solution. I want to create an application that queries a service via JSON requests (all data and backend/business logic is stored in the service). With plain PHP it's simple enough since i just make a curl request, json_decode the result and get what i need. This already works quite well. A request might look like this: Call http://service-host/userlist with body: {"logintoken": "123456-1234-5678-901234"} Get Result: { "status": "Ok", "userlist":[ {"name": "foo", "id": 1}, {"name": "bar", "id": 2} ] } Now we want to get that into the Zend Framework since it's a hobby project and we want to learn about Zend. The problem is that all information i could find use a Database. Is there even a way to create a Zend Project that does not use a Database? And how can i write a model that represents the actions instead of objects and object-relations?

• Can Atom be used for things besides syndication feeds?

  Purely in terms of its conceptual model, is the purpose of Atom (and RSS) only to provide a time-sequential series of frequently-updated items, such as "most recent blog posts" or "last twenty SVN commits," or can Atom be legitimately used to represent static and/or non-time-sequential listings/indices? As an example, "index of files under this directory", "dog breeds" or "music genres". Even if there's a date associated with the items, like a file's last modified date, what if you don't necessarily want time to be the primary consideration when you represent that model to your users? The context for this is passing around (generating and consuming) lists of things in a REST-ful environment, hopefully using a well-understood format, where "date something was created/updated" is a pertinent detail, but not the primary consideration. I realize there's probably no right answer, but wanted to get some perspectives. Thanks.

• Using PUT/POST/DELETE with JSONP and jQuery

  I am working on creating a RESTful API that supports cross-domain requests, JSON/JSONP support, and the main HTTP method (PUT/GET/POST/DELETE). Now while will be easy to accessing this API through server side code , it would nice to exposed it to javascript. From what I can tell, when doing a JSONP requests with jQuery, it only supports the GET method. Is there a way to do a JSONP request using POST/PUT/DELETE? Ideally I would like a way to do this from within jQuery (through a plugin if the core does not support this), but I will take a plain javascript solution too. Any links to working code or how to code it would be helpful, thanks.
