• Running an RMI registry on one computer and connecting to it from another

  Hello. I am doing a student assignment, using java RMI. I've programmed a simple RMI-server application that provides method which return some strings to the client. When I start the server on localhost and connect to it by client on the same computer, everything goes well. However, I am not able to do this between two computers on home network. The computers both have no trouble of connecting by a simple C program with similar functionality, so I guess the problem is with JVM here. I am binding the class to rmiregistry with try{ ComputeImpl R = new ComputeImpl(); Naming.rebind("rmi://localhost/ComputeService",R); } catch(Exception e){ System.out.println("Trouble: " +e); } And I'm doing the lookup for RMI registry in the client application with providing the argument while launching the application: StringBuffer rmi_address = new StringBuffer(); rmi_address.append("rmi://").append(args[1]).append("/ComputeService"); Compute R = (Compute) Naming.lookup(rmi_address.toString()); Is the problem with my code or with JVM?   As a novice programmer and i always wonder about c# capabilities.i know it is still early to judge that but all i want to know is can c# do complex stuffs or something outside windows OS. 1- I think c# is a proprietary language (i don't know if i said that right) meaning you can't do it outside visual studio or windows. 2-also you cant create your own controller(called object right?) like you are forced to use these available in toolbox and their properties and methods. 3-can c# be used with openGL API or DirectX API . 4-Finally it always bothers me when i think i start doing things in visual studio, i know it sounds arrogant to say but sometimes i feel that i don't like to be forced to use something even if its helpful, like i feel (do i have the right to feel?) that i want to do all things by myself? don't laugh i just feel that this will give me a better understanding. 5- is visual c# is like using MaxScript inside 3ds max in that c# is exclusive to do windows and forms and components that are windows related and maxscript is only for 3d editing and manipulation for various things in the software. If it is too difficult for a beginner i hope you don't answer the fourth question as i don't have enough motivation and i want to keep the little i have. thank you for your time. Note: 1-sorry for my English, i am self taught and never used the language with native speakers so expect so errors. 2-i have a lot of questions regarding many things, what is the daily ratio you think for asking (number of questions) that would not bother the admins of the site and the members here. thank you for your time.

  I am writing a Midlet(using Netbeans) which reads a file containing exactly 2400 lines (each line being 32 characters long) and (extract a part of each line) puts them in an array. I am doing the same for 11 such files( all files have exactly 2400 lines).The Midlet runs fine for reading 6 files and putting them in 6 arrays. However, the Midlet stops while doing it for the 7th file throwing the following exception: TRACE: , startApp threw an Exception java.lang.OutOfMemoryError (stack trace incomplete) java.lang.OutOfMemoryError (stack trace incomplete) I have tried the modifying the netbeans.conf file to increase the heap memory ( as suggested by many forums and blogs) but nothing works for me. Here are the parameters that i had modified in the netbeans.conf file: -J-Xss2m -J-Xms1024m -J-Xmx1024m -J-XX:PermSize=1024m -J-XX:MaxPermSize=1536m -J-XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC -J-XX:+CMSClassUnloadingEnabled -J-XX:+CMSPermGenSweepingEnabled Can anyone please help me to get me out of this ! • Php script running as scheduled task hangs - help!

  Hi guys, I've built a php script that runs from the command line. It opens a connection into a pop3 email account and downloads all the emails and writes them to a database, and deletes them once downloaded. I have this script being called from the commandline by a bat file. in turn I have created a scheduled task which invokes the bat file every 5 minutes. The thing is that I have set the time out to zero for the fact that at times there could be emails with large attachments and the script actually downloads the attachments and stores them as raw files offline and the no timeout is so that the script doesnt die out during downloading. I've found that the program hangs sometimes and its a bit annoying at that - it always hangs are one point i.e. when negotiating the connection and getting connected to the mail server. And because the timeout is set to zero it seems to stay stuck up in taht position. And because of that the task is not run as its technically hung up. I want that the program should not timeout when downloading emails - however at the points where it is negotiating a connection or trying to connect to the mailserver there should be a timeout only at that point itself and not the rest of the program execution. How do I do this :(

Its a User object with Items. If i put another CreateCriteria at the end it refers to the Items, not the User.

  I would like to write a shell script that sets up a mercurial repository, and allow all users in the group "developers" to execute this script. The script is owned by the user "hg", and works fine when ran. The problem comes when I try to run it with another user, using sudo, the execution halts with a "permission denied" error, when it tries to source another file.   Hi, I have few Gigabytes text file in format: {"user_ip":"x.x.x.x", "action_type":"xxx", "action_data":{"some_key":"some_value"...},...} each entry is one line. First I would like to easily find entries for given ip. This part is easy because I can use grep for example. However even for this I would like to find better solution because I would like to get response as fast as possible. Next part is more complicated because I would like to find entries from selected ip and of selected type and with particular value of some_key in action_data. Probably I would have to convert this file to SQL db (probably SQLite, because it will be desktop APP), but I would ask if there are exists better solutions?

Should the "AddToList" method have "ref" in it or not? And why? It's like trying to learn pointers in C all over again ;-) (which is probably why I am getting confused, I'm trying to relate these to pointers. In C it'd be "SomeClass *Item" and a list of "SomeClass *" variables)

  I'm trying to create an vocabulary study application using Obj-C and the Cocoa frameworks. I have about two week's experience in both areas and have reached an edge of my current knowledge. Here's where I'm stuck. When I press a checkbox, a corresponding plist is loaded into memory as an NSDictionary. I want to generate a "Label: Textfield" pair for each key:value pair, where the Label is the key. When the text typed into the Textfield matches the key's value, I want the Label's text to turn green.   Intro Consider you have a list of key/value pairs: (0,a) (1,b) (2,c) You have a function, that inserts a new value between two current pairs, and you need to give it a key that keeps the order: (0,a) (0.5,z) (1,b) (2,c) Here the new key was chosen as the average between the average of keys of the bounding pairs. The problem is, that you list may have milions of inserts. If these inserts are all put close to each other, you may end up with keys such to 2^(-1000000), which are not easily storagable in any standard nor special number class. The problem How can you design a system for generating keys that: Gives the correct result (larger/smaller than) when compared to all the rest of the keys. Takes up only O(logn) memory (where n is the number of items in the list). My tries First I tried different number classes. Like fractions and even polynomium, but I could always find examples where the key size would grow linear with the number of inserts. Then I thought about saving pointers to a number of other keys, and saving the lower/greater than relationship, but that would always require at least O(sqrt) memory and time for comparison. Extra info: Ideally the algorithm shouldn't break when pairs are deleted from the list.

• Opinions on collision detection objects with a moving scene

  So my question is simple, and I guess it boils down to how anal you want to be about collision detection. To keep things simple, lets assume we're talking about 2D sprites defined by a bounding box. In addition, let's assume that my sprite object has a function to detect collisions like this: S.collidesWith(other); Finally the scene is moving and "walls" in the scene can move, an object may not touch a wall. So a simple implementation might look like this (psuedo code): moveWalls(); moveSprite(); foreach(wall as w) { if(s.collidesWith(w)) { gameover(); } } The problem with this is that if the sprite and wall move towards each other, depending on the circumstances (such as diagonal moment). They may pass though each other (unlikely but could happen). So I may do this instead. moveWalls(); foreach(wall as w) { if(s.collidesWith(w)) { gameover(); } } moveSprite(); foreach(wall as w) { if(s.collidesWith(w)) { gameover(); } } This takes care of the passing through each other issue, but another rare issue comes up. If they are adjacent to each other (literally the next pixel) and both the wall and the sprite are moving left, then I will get an invalid collision since the wall moves, checks for collision (hit) then the sprite is moved. Which seems unfair. In addition, to that, the redundant collision detection feels very inefficient. I could give the player movement priority alleviating the first issue but it is still checking twice. moveSprite(); foreach(wall as w) { if(s.collidesWith(w)) { gameover(); } } moveWalls(); foreach(wall as w) { if(s.collidesWith(w)) { gameover(); } } Am I simply over thinking this issue, should this just be chalked up to "it'll happen rare enough that no one will care"? Certainly looking at old sprite based games, I often find situations where the collision detection has subtle flaws, but I figure by now we can do better :-P. What are people's thoughts?

When trying to update a record, the update does happen but then throws an error saying "'id' parameter is missing at the statement".   I have a task that runs periodically and it was originally designed to run on a separate run loop than the main runloop using NSThread and NSTimer. What's the best way to adapt this to take advantage of GCD?   Hi guys, I'm getting angry - I cant run the emulator (under vista x64). I still get the following error: Starting emulator in execution mode * Error * Failed to connect to device 2! Reason: Emulator 2 terminated while waiting for it to register! BUILD FAILED (total time: 26 seconds) I was trying to change the port to 1999, localhost to ip address and such stuff. Each lookup can have a parent, which can be of a different type. For simplicities sake lets take the Country and State example.
