• problem with MANIFEST.MF in jar

  I have created my jar file in the following folder: /usr/local/bin/niidle.jar And I have one jarfile which is in the following folder /Projects/EnwelibDatedOct13/Niidle/lib/hector-0.6.0-17.jar And this file 'hector-0.6.0-17.jar' I have to include in MANIFEST.MF in jar. And when I mention class path in MANIFEST.MF as follows: Manifest-Version: 1.0 Main-Class: com.ensarm.niidle.web.scraper.NiidleScrapeManager Class-Path: /Projects/EnwelibDatedOct13/Niidle/lib/hector-0.6.0-17.jar When I run this using command: java -jar /usr/local/bin/niidle.jar It works properly.. • Why does autoboxing in Java allow me to have 3 possible values for a boolean?

  Reference: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/guide/language/autoboxing.html If your program tries to autounbox null, it will throw a NullPointerException. javac will give you a compile-time error if you try to assign null to a boolean. makes sense. assigning null to a Boolean is a-ok though. also makes sense, i guess. but let's think about the fact that you'll get a NPE when trying to autounbox null. what this means is that you can't safely perform boolean operations on Booleans without null-checking or exception handling. same goes for doing math operations on an Integer. for a long time, i was a fan of autoboxing in java1.5+ because I thought it got java closer to be truly object-oriented. but, after running into this problem last night, i gotta say that i think this sucks. the compiler giving me an error when I'm trying to do stuff with an uninitialized primitive is a good thing. I think I may be misunderstanding the point of autoboxing, but at the same time I will never accept that a boolean should be able to have 3 values. can anyone explain this? what am i not getting?

• PHP Json Encoding w/ quote escaping in 5.2?

  I'm playing with the flickr api and php. I want to pass some information from PHP to Javascript through Ajax. I have the following code: json_encode($pics); which results in the following example JSON string: [{"id":"4363603591","title":"blue, white and red...another seattle view","date_faved":"1266379499"},{"id":"4004908219","title":"\u201cI just told you my dreams and you made me see that I could walk into the sun and I could still be me and now I can't deny nothing lasts forever.\u201d","date_faved":"1259987670"}] Javascript has problems with this, however, due to the unescaped single-quote in the second item ("can't deny"). I want to use the function json_encode with the options parameter to make it strip the quotes, but that's only available in PHP 5.3, and I'm running 5.2 (not my server). Is there a fast way to run through the entire array and escape everything before encoding it in Json? I looked for a way to do this, but it all seems to deal with encoding it as the data is generated, something I cannot do as I'm not the one generating the data. • F# Async problem.

  Hi, I've written a dummy http server as an exercise in F#. I'm using Mono 2.4.4 on Ubuntu 10.04 x86_64, with MonoDevelop. The following code fails to compile with the error: Error FS0039: The field, constructor or member 'Spawn' is not defined (FS0039) Could someone try this in VisualStudio please, I don't know whether this is a Mono problem, or my problem. I have tried several Async examples from the F# book, and they also all produce similar messages about Async.* methods. • Dropdown in PHP

  Hi, I am using PHP 5.2 on SUN OS server. Having problems with the following piece of code that for a drop down: echo '<form action="" method="get">'; echo '<p>Information:<br />'; echo '<select name="acctno" style="width: 100px;">'; foreach ($this->account_names as $acctno => $acctname) { echo '<option value="'.$acctno.'">'.$acctname.'</option>'; } echo '</select> <input type="submit" value="view" />'; echo '</form>'; Worked perfectly fine on Firefox and Chrome; however there is a problem with Internet Explorer. In IE the dropdown width is limited to the size i.e 100px. So only the first 15-16 characters of the account name are displayed all the time. However in chrome or firefox, even if only 15-16 characters are displayed initially, when the drop down arrow is clicked upon, it show the entire name (however long it may be). This does not happen with IE. So if the account name is, lets say, "1223456789abcdefghijkl" then: For IE: shows only "123456789" all the time Ffor chrome or firefox: shows "123456789" and when it is dropped down it show the full name as "123456789abcdefghijkl". • How to disable mod_security2 rule (false positive) for one domain on centos 5

  Hi I have mod_security enabled on a centos5 server and one of the rules is keeping a user from posting some text on a form. The text is legitimate but it has the words 'create' and an html <table> tag later in it so it is causing a false positive.   I am familiar (as a self-learner) with C, python and php such that i can solve some problems involving simple steps (for example, i easily do calculations for physics lab reports with python which normally would take 4x-5x times longer with a calculator). The point here is, as doing such things, i learnt the idea / concepts of programming language and problem solving along with oop or fuctional programming etc. Recently i have started Java and, with the familiarity of other languages, i am doing well for starters but i need guidence. -I am thinking of learning syntax from sun java tutorials and then practicing with codingbat.com or similar sites. I need a reference book that i can study deeper aspects of the topics i am learning. What do you suggest about these? -The problem is (and always have been) the lack of practice. I need coding and problem-solving practices sources. I stuck at the point where i can't figure out what to do next. Can you suggest any source (possibly like codingbat)? If i could plan a learning trail, i can progress faster and efficiently. So i need ideas, comments, suggestions. Thanks in advance.

• git doesn't show where code was removed.

  So I was tasked at replacing some dummy code that our project requires for historical compatibility reasons but has mysteriously dropped out sometime since the last release. Since disappearing code makes me nervous about what else might have gone missing but un-noticed I've been digging through the logs trying to find in what commit this handful of lines was removed. I've tried a number of things including "git log -S'add-visit-resource-pcf'", git blame, and even git bisect with a script that simply checks for the existence of the line but have been unable to pinpoint exactly where these lines were removed. • Splitting EJBs and interfaces into separate module -- deployment fails

  I'm having trouble following this guide to "extract" my interfaces and entities from my EAR to use them from another Web Application: I use NetBeans 6.8 and Glassfish 3.0.1 "Java Class Library" project contains all the entities and interfaces "Java EE Application" project class library added to the project, is packaged into the EAR contains EJB implementations, MDBs, Test "Java Web Application" project class library added to the project, is packaged into the WAR contains REST interface When I build and deploy the Web Application, all goes well. When I build the JEE application, I can see the jar-file (interfaces, entities) being included. • Why put a DAO layer over a persistence layer (like JDO or Hibernate)

  Data Access Objects (DAOs) are a common design pattern, and recommended by Sun. But the earliest examples of Java DAOs interacted directly with relational databases -- they were, in essence, doing object-relational mapping (ORM). Nowadays, I see DAOs on top of mature ORM frameworks like JDO and Hibernate, and I wonder if that is really a good idea. I am developing a web service using JDO as the persistence layer, and am considering whether or not to introduce DAOs. I foresee a problem when dealing with a particular class which contains a map of other objects: public class Book { // Book description in various languages, indexed by ISO language codes private Map<String,BookDescription> descriptions; } JDO is clever enough to map this to a foreign key constraint between the "BOOKS" and "BOOKDESCRIPTIONS" tables. It transparently loads the BookDescription objects (using lazy loading, I believe), and persists them when the Book object is persisted. If I was to introduce a "data access layer" and write a class like BookDao, and encapsulate all the JDO code within this, then wouldn't this JDO's transparent loading of the child objects be circumventing the data access layer? For consistency, shouldn't all the BookDescription objects be loaded and persisted via some BookDescriptionDao object (or BookDao.loadDescription method)? Yet refactoring in that way would make manipulating the model needlessly complicated. So my question is, what's wrong with calling JDO (or Hibernate, or whatever ORM you fancy) directly in the business layer? Its syntax is already quite concise, and it is datastore-agnostic. What is the advantage, if any, of encapsulating it in Data Access Objects?

• Cookie not renewing/overwriting in IE

  I have a weird quirk with cookies in IE. When a user logs into the site, I'm generating a new session id and hence need to overwrite the cookie. The flow is basically: Client goes to https://secure.example.com/users/login page, automatically receiving a session id Client POSTs login credentials to same address Client receives the following headers together with a 302 redirect to https://secure.example.com/users/mypage: CAKEPHP=deleted; expires=Sun, 05-Apr-2009 04:50:35 GMT; path=/ CAKEPHP=98hnIO23...; expires=Mon, 12 Apr 2010 04:50:36 GMT; path=/; secure Client is supposed to visit https://secure.example.com/users/mypage, presenting the new session id. This works in all browsers, except IE (tested in 7 & 8). IE retains the old, unauthenticated session id, and is redirected back to the login page. It works on my local test environment (using a self-signed certificate at https://localhost:8443/...), but not on the live server. I'm using CakePHP and simply issue a $this->Session->renew(), which produces the above cookie headers. Any ideas how to get IE to accept the new cookie?

• Different ways to use properties file in j2ee app

  I have a j2ee app using Struts2. I have a gloabl properties file which is declared in struts.properties which resides in WEB-INF/classes. It has the following setting: struts.custom.i18n.resources=mypropertyfile mypropertyfile also resides in WEB-INF/classes Say for example it contains the following: pdf.test.title=PDF Test then on jsp I use the following to make use of the property file <s:text name="pdf.test.title"/> This setup was working on Sun App server 8.2 but is not working on GlassFish App Server (I see pdf.test.title on the browser rather than PDF Test). I do not have access to GlassFish App server to try and tweak the setting to make it work. So I want to make changes to the code and see if that will help. My question is: What are some other ways to use properties file in a J2EE app? (using Struts2 or not). I'm also open to ways suggested to make changes on glassfish to make this work? Build/version #'s GlassFish = 9.1_02 (build b04-fcs) Struts2 = 2.0.6 JRE6

• How to use my trackpad for horizontal mousewheel scrolling in a Java AWT ScrollPane

  Like many modern mice and trackpads, my laptop supports vertical and horizontal scrolling. It's an addictive feature once you get used to it. I simply want my Java apps to support horizontal scrolling via the trackpad/mousewheel, but everywhere I search it seems that this is not possible in Java. I really want someone to tell me that I'm somehow doing it wrong, this feature is already requested behaviour: http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6440198 The inability to do this simple thing is actually a deal breaker for the app I'm working on. In fact, for any app I can envision! I've invested a bit of time in the Java backend, so I'd really like to find a solution for this seemingly simple thing. Question is what could I do to implement this behaviour? • How to structure applications as multiple projects an name the packages in Java

  Hello Everyone I would like to know how you set up your projects in Java For example, in my current work-project, a six year old J2EE app with approximately 2 million LoC, we only have one project in Eclipse. The package structure is split into tiers and then domains, so it follows guidelines from Sun/Oracle. A huge ant-script is building different jars out of this one source-folder Personally I think it would be better to have multiple projects, at least for each tier. Recently I was playing around with a projects-structure like this: Domainproject (contains only annotated pojos, needed by all other projects) Datalayer (only persistence) Businesslogic (services) Presenter View This way, it should be easier to exchange components and when using a build tool like Maven I can have everything in a repository so when only working on the frontend I can get the rest as a dependecy in my classpath. Does this makes sense to you? Do you use different approaches and how do they look like? Furthermore I am struggeling how to name my packages/projects correctly. Right now, the above project-structure reflects in the names of the packages, eg. de.myapp.view and it continues with some technical subfolders like internal or interfaces. What I am missing here, and I dont know how to do this properly, is the distinction to a certain domain. When the project gets bigger it would be nice to recognise a particular domain but also the technical details to navigate more easily within the project. This leads to my second question: how do you name your projects and packages?
