  • Waiting for a subset of threads in a Java ThreadPool

    Let's say I have a thread pool containing X items, and a given task employs Y of these items (where Y is much smaller than X). I want to wait for all of the threads of a given task (Y items) to finish, not the entire thread pool. If the thread pool's execute() method returned a reference to the employed thread I could simply join() to each of these Y threads, but it doesn't. Does anyone know of an elegant way to accomplish this? Thanks.

  • Manually Increasing the Amount of CPU a Java Application Uses

    I've just made a program with Eclipse that takes a really long time to execute. It's taking even longer because it's loading my CPU to 25% only (I'm assuming that is because I'm using a quad-core and the program is only using one core). Is there any way to make the program use all 4 cores to max it out? Java is supposed to be natively multi-threaded, so I don't understand why it would only use 25%.

    I'm trying to write a Postgres trigger such that when a configuration table is updated, a backend component is notified and can handle the change. I know that Oracle has the concept of a web/HTTP trigger, where you can execute an HTTP GET from the Oracle instance itself to a URL that can then handle the request at the application layer. I'm wondering if Postgres (v. 9.0.5) has the same feature, or comes with anything similar (and, subsequently, how to set it up/configure it)?

  • SVN Export while retaining permissions

    Hey all- I have some files in my SVN repository that I would like to have execute permissions. When I check them into the repository with 755 permissions and run an svn export, the resulting files have 644 permissions. There doesn't appear to be an option in "svn export" to retain the permissions. Am I missing something? Thanks- Jonathan

Any suggestions on how to do this?

    Using Hibernate, what is the most efficient way to determine if a table is empty or non-empty? In other words, does the table have 0, or more than 0 rows? I could execute the HQL query select count(*) from tablename and then check if result is 0 or non-0, but this isn't optimal as I would be asking the database for more detail than I really need.

    I have the following query: SELECT MAX([LastModifiedTime]) FROM Workflow There are approximately 400M rows in the Workflow table. There is an index on the LastModifiedTime column as follows: CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX [IX_Workflow_LastModifiedTime] ON [dbo].[Workflow] ( [LastModifiedTime] ASC )WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, SORT_IN_TEMPDB = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, DROP_EXISTING = OFF, ONLINE = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON, FILLFACTOR = 100) The above query takes 1.5 minutes to execute. Why wouldn't SQL Server use the above index and simply retrieve the last row in the index to get the maximum value? Thanks.

    I'm using xdebug to profile some PHP code on Windows and using WinCacheGrind/Webgrind to analyse the output, but I'm getting some strange results. Specifically, the total cumulative time for a single method is greater than 100%! How is it possible that more time is spent executing this function's code and all the functions that it calls than the total time it took to execute the whole script? What am I missing here?

The .slideUp doesn't execute an upside down version of slideDown. Instead it hides stuff, like after your cleaning up an old message you've displayed with slideDown. So what's the simplest code to do an upside down slideDown() in jQuery?

  • priority_queue with dynamic priorities

    Hey, I have a server application which accepts incomming queries and executes them. If there are too many queries they should be queued and if some of the other queries got executed the queued queries should be executed as well. Since I want to pass queries with different priorities I think using a priority_queue would be the best choice. e.g. The amout of the axcepting queries (a) hit the limt and new queries will be stored in the queue. All queries have a priority of 1 (lowest) if some of the queries from (a) get executed the programm will pick the query with the highest priority out of the queue and execute it. Still no problem. Now someone is sending a query with a priority of 5 which gets added to the queue. Since this is the query with the highest priority the application will execute this query as soon as the running queries no longer hit the limit. There might be the worst case that 500 queries with a priority of 1 are queued but wont be executed since someone is always sending queries with a priority of 5 hence these 500 queries will be queued for a looooong time. In order to prevent that I want to increase the prioritiy of all queries which have a lower priority than the query with the higher priority, in this example which have a priority lower than 5. So if the query with a priority of 5 gets pulled out of the queue all other queries with a priority < 5 should be increased by 0.2. This way queries with a low priority wont be queued for ever even if there might be 100 queries with a higher priority. I have not completely gone through the ReactiveExentension, although it looks promising but may be overkill for my needs. Is there any framework which supports parallelism ?
