  • February 2011 Java SE and Java for Business Critical Patch Update Released

    Hello, this is Eric Maurice again. Oracle released the February 2011 Critical Patch Update for Java SE and Java for Business today. As discussed in a previous blog entry, Oracle currently maintains a separate Critical Patch Update schedule for Java SE and Java for Business because of commitments made prior to the Oracle acquisition in regards to the timing for the publication of Java fixes. Today's Java Critical Patch Update includes fixes for 21 vulnerabilities. The most severe CVSS Base Score for vulnerabilities fixed in this CPU is 10.0, and this Base Score affects 8 vulnerabilities. Out of these 21 vulnerabilities, 13 affect Java client deployments. 12 of these 13 vulnerabilities can be exploited through Untrusted Java Web Start applications and Untrusted Java Applets, which run in the Java sandbox with limited privileges. One of these 13 vulnerabilities can be exploited by running a standalone application. In addition, one of the client vulnerability affects Java Update, a Windows-specific component. 3 of the 21 vulnerabilities affect client and server deployments. These vulnerabilities can be exploited through Untrusted Java Web Start applications and Untrusted Java Applets, as well as be exploited by supplying malicious data to APIs in the specified components, such as, for example, through a web service. 3 vulnerabilities affect Java server deployments only. These vulnerabilities can be exploited by supplying malicious data to APIs in the specified Java components. Note that one of these vulnerabilities (CVE-2010-4476) was the subject of a Security Alert released on February 8th. Finally, one of these vulnerabilities is specific to Java DB, a component in the Java JDK, but not included in the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). As usual, because of the severity of the vulnerabilities fixed in this Critical Patch Update, Oracle recommends that Java customers apply it as soon as possible. The Critical Patch Advisory provides more details about the vulnerabilities addressed in the Critical Patch Update as well as instructions on how to install the fixes and where to get them. Home users should use the Java auto-update mechanism to install the latest version of the Java Runtime Environment 6 update 24 or higher (JRE), which includes the fix for this vulnerability.   • Oracle HCM Cloud Customer Q&A with WAXIE Sanitary Supply

    At this year’s Oracle HCM User Group (OHUG) Global conference, we had the opportunity to sit down with Oracle HCM Cloud customers for a short Q&A. We got to hear about what brought them to the OHUG conference, some of the benefits they are receiving from their Oracle HCM Cloud solutions, and advice they would give other businesses looking to move to the cloud.  Below is a discussion we had with Melissa Halverson, Benefits & HRIS Manager at WAXIE Sanitary Supply.  Q: What made you attend the OHUG Global Conference this year? Halverson: The biggest reason is networking. It allows me to connect with others in the Oracle HCM Cloud community. I was able to speak at the HCM Cloud SIG (Special Interest Group) on the first day and share my experiences as well as hear the experiences of other Oracle HCM Cloud users. It also allows me to get face-time with key people within Oracle.  Q: What Oracle HCM solutions are you currently using? Halverson: Global HR, Benefits, Workforce Compensation, and Performance Management. Q: Do you plan to invest further in Oracle HCM? Halverson: Yes, we are interested in Time and Labor. We would also like to get Recruiting at some point in the future. Q: What would you say is the most significant benefit you’ve realized from your use of Oracle HCM solutions? Halverson: First and foremost would be process improvement. Before we had Oracle HCM Cloud we relied on a paper process where something as simple as an employee address change required changes to be made manually in 9 different systems. Obviously that was extremely inefficient, but also increased the likelihood of errors being made.  The other huge benefit we have seen was in making information visible to the people that need it. Prior to implementing Oracle HCM Cloud, it was very difficult for anyone to access and make use of the information in our systems. Now, we can provide this information to those who need it to make better decisions.  Q: What advice would you give an organization looking to move their HR systems to the cloud? Halverson: One thing I think many organizations don't spend enough time doing is thoroughly vetting their implementation partner. I believe you should be vetting your implementation partner as much as you did the system itself. Also, manpower is so important. Involve as large a team as possible because you don’t want to get stuck having too few bodies to help out. And set realistic time frames. Biting off more than you can chew will inevitably result in failure. Having a phased approach is always best rather than trying to do everything at once. Thanks for the tips Melissa.   • What layer to introduce human readable error messages?

    One of the things that I have never been happy with on any project I have worked on over the years and have really not been able to resolve myself is exactly at what tier in an application should human readable error information be retrieved for display to a user. A common approach that has worked well has been to return strongly typed/concrete "result objects" from the methods on the public surface of the business tier/API. A method on the interface may be: public ClearUserAccountsResult ClearUserAccounts(ClearUserAccountsParam param); And the result class implementation: public class ClearUserAccountsResult : IResult { public readonly List<Account> ClearedAccounts{get; set;} public readonly bool Success {get; set;} // Implements IResult public readonly string Message{get; set;} // Implements IResult, human readable // Constructor implemented here to set readonly properties... } This works great when the API needs to be exposed over WCF as the result object can be serialized. Again this is only done on the public surface of the API/business tier. The error message can also be looked up from the database, which means it can be changed and localized. However, it has always been suspect to me, this idea of returning human readable information from the business tier like this, partly because what constitutes the public surface of the API may change over time...and it may be the case that the API will need to be reused by other API components in the future that do not need the human readable string messages (and looking them up from a database would be an expensive waste). I am thinking a better approach is to keep the business objects free from such result objects and keep them simple and then retrieve human readable error strings somewhere closer to the UI layer or only in the UI itself, but I have two problems here: 1) The UI may be a remote client (Winforms/WPF/Silverlight) or an ASP.NET web application hosted on another server. In these cases the UI will have to fetch the error strings from the server. 2) Often there are multiple legitimate modes of failure. If the business tier becomes so vague and generic in the way it returns errors there may not be enough information exposed publicly to tell what the error actually was: i.e: if a method has 3 modes of legitimate failure but returns a boolean to indicate failure, you cannot work out what the appropriate message to display to the user should be. I have thought about using failure enums as a substitute, they can indicate a specific error that can be tested for and coded against. This is sometimes useful within the business tier itself as a way of passing via method returns the specifics of a failure rather than just a boolean, but it is not so good for serialization scenarios. Is there a well worn pattern for this? What do people think? Thanks.

  • 302 Redirect causes garbage at end of Wordpress link in Facebook

    When I try to link my Wordpress blog to Facebook, the url doesn't resolve properly. There's garbage appended at the end and Facebook is not able to retrieve information from the site. Happens in every page, post or main entry. Here's what happens: http://clarissarezende.com.br/ shows up in Facebook as http://clarissarezende.com.br/UPLcS/ (when copy/paste the link) and no information about the site shows up in FB. I'm using Wordpress 3.3.1 with ProPhoto 4. Recently I moved the DNS entry on my ISP. The blog is hosted at clarissarezende.com.br/public_html/blog2 and before the DNS would point to public_html and then I changed it to public_html/blog2. Note that I did not move any Wordpress files. Made the (I think) necessary changes all over Facebook, but still no dice... Any ideas on what can be happening?

  • HTTP 303 redirection and robots.txt

    On a site I'm working on, we're using the HTTP 303 redirect pattern (see this article for background) to distinguish between information and non-information resources. So: some URL's under /id get redirected to dynamically-created pages under /doc. These dynamic pages are built from a database, and contain links to other /doc/ resources, so in general we don't want them to be crawled. Our robots.txt contains: Disallow: /doc However, we do want the non-redirected pages under /id to get indexed by Google et al: Allow: /id So the question I have, which I can't find an answer to so far, is: if an allowed /id page 303-redirects to a /doc page, will it still be blocked by robots.txt? If yes, we're OK, but otherwise I'm going to disallow all /id resources in the robots file, as having the crawler hammer the db would be worse than losing search indexing for the /id pages.

They leveraged the standard group spaces in Oracle WebCenter Portal to enable business users to collaborate more effectively.  Results By automating much of the investor approval process, they reduced the time needed to process loan modifications from approximately 30 days to one week and greatly minimized the use of e-mail and FTP sites to share information.   • Does anybody know what happens to money spent in the Ubuntu One Music Store?

    I remember reading on the Canonical website around the launch of the Ubuntu One Music store that after revenue was divided between Canonical, 7 digital and the artists involved that all profit or a significant percentage would be donated to a charity. This information has either disappeared from their website or my detective skills have failed me once more. Does anybody happen to understand the break down of revenue generated by the Ubuntu One Music Store or even know where to find this information. Also it would be useful to know which charity benefits from this. (Not that that would impact upon my purchases or send me running to iTunes. ;) Promise)

  • Markup format or script for data files?

    The game I'm designing will be mainly written in a high level scripting language (leaning towards either Lua or Squirrel) with a C++ core. In addition to scripts I'm also going to need different data files. Many data files will be for static information such as graphical assets and monster types. I'd also want to create and update data files at runtime for user information like option settings and game saves. Can I get away with using plain script files (i.e. .lua or .nut files) for my data files, or is it better to use dedicated markup formats like XML or YAML? If I use script files, loaded separately from my true scripts, then I wouldn't need an extra library to read those files. Scripting languages like Lua also have table syntax that lend themselves towards data definition. On the other hand I'd have to write my own schema check code. These languages also don't seem to support serialization "out of the box" like the markup format libraries do.
