• Simple Database normalization question...

  Hi all, I have a quick question regarding a database that I am designing and making sure it is normalized... I have a customer table, with a primary key of customerId. It has a StatusCode column that has a code which reflects the customers account status ie. 1 = Open, 2 = Closed, 3 = Suspended etc... Now I would like to have another field in the customer table that flags whether the account is allowed to be suspended or not... certain customers will be automatically suspended if they break there trading terms... others not... so the relevant table fields will be as so: Customers (CustomerId(PK):StatusCode:IsSuspensionAllowed) Now both fields are dependent on the primary key as you can not determine the status or whether suspensions are allowed on a particular customer unless you know the specific customer, except of course when the IsSuspensionAllowed field is set to YES, the the customer should never have a StatusCode of 3 (Suspended). It seems from the above table design it is possible for this to happen unless a check contraint is added to my table. I can't see how another table could be added to the relational design to enforce this though as it's only in the case where IsSuspensionAllowed is set to YES and StatusCode is set to 3 when the two have a dependence on each other. So after my long winded explanation my question is this: Is this a normalization problem and I'm not seeing a relational design that will enforce this... or is it actually just a business rule that should be enforced with a check contraint and the table is in fact still normalized.   Hey people, I remember seeing a tutorial somewhere that talks of how to style your input forms in a more "usable" way. Essentially, you have a placeholder value and when you enter the input, it hides the hint so to speak. Now, just to be clear: I don't want the hint (placeholder value text) to disappear onFocus, but rather to go lighter when I first start typing something. Good e.gs: Check out the forms on Aardvark http://vark.com/. This is exactly how I wish to have my input forms. Our very own stackoverflow. When you try to ask a question, on clicking inside any input form, it doesn't hide the text right away. You see your cursor as well as the hint. but when you start to type, it hides the hint(I would prefer having it go to a much lighter shade rather than hiding all together, like above example). I remember very clearly reading a tutorial somewhere on the interwebz with this exact requirement, but darn forgot to bookmark it. Any suggestions/links?

  I have a Linux box and I want to be able to telnet into it (port 77557) and run few required commands without having to access to the whole Linux box. So, I have a server listening on that port, and echos the entered command on the screen. (for now) Telnet 192.168.1.100 77557 Trying 192.168.1.100... Connected to 192.168.1.100. Escape character is '^]'. hello<br /> You typed: "hello"<br /> NOW: I want to create lot of commands that each take some args and have error codes. Anyone has done this before? It would be great if I can have the server upon initialization go through each directory and execute the init.py file and in turn, the init.py file of each command call into a main template lib API (e.g. RegisterMe()) and register themselves with the server as function call backs. At least this is how I would do it in C/C++. But I want the best Pythonic way of doing this. /cmd/ /cmd/myreboot/ /cmd/myreboot/ini.py (note underscore don't show for some reason) /cmd/mylist/ /cmd/mylist/init.py ... etc IN: /cmd/myreboot/_ini_.py: from myMainCommand import RegisterMe RegisterMe(name="reboot",args=Arglist, usage="Use this to reboot the box", desc="blabla") So, repeating this creates a list of commands and when you enter the command in the telnet session, then the server goes through the list, matches the command and passed the args to that command and the command does the job and print the success or failure to stdout.   Hello, I have a client that wants a WYSIWYG form that behaves like MS word. It will have some section labels in it, with users expected to enter notes for each section, and it needs a place holder for a chart. The trick is that the user needs to know where page breaks are going to fall when printed. The customer agrees to fixed size paper with fixed sized margins. How should I approach this challenge? Thank you very much for your suggestions. Here is an example: Section 1: Explain Idea Here { As user types in this section, the space between this section and the next section expands, but I as the user can't delete the lines that say Section 1 or 2, or the place holder for the chart. However if I type a lot of text, I need to display where the page breaks are with a dashed line or something, so the user can make sure the content enters appears on the desired page. If the form happens to close before the callback happens, it crashes with an error about accessing a disposed object. What's the correct way to check/handle this situation?   I'm starting to look into Google's Picasa API for photo data, which provides you with a big XML file with info about albums and photos. Does it have to do with the colon in "gphoto:id", somehow?

• Writing a simple incrementing counter in rails

  For every Card, I would like to attach a special number to them that increments by one. I assume I can do this all in the controller. def create @card = Card.new(params[:card]) @card.SpecNum = @card.SpecNum ++ ... end Or. I can be blatantly retarded. And maybe the best bet is to add an auto-incremement table to mysql. The problem is the number has to start at a specific number, 1020. Any ideas?

• Visual Studio crashes when I add a .settings file in a C++ Windows form application

  I'm trying to add a .settings file in a windows form application by adding a (whatever) file in the project and have it named smthng.settings. Right after it is created, it crashes (if I look into the project's directory the file is there, but it's not "in" the project). Am I doing it wrong or could it be that the problem lies elsewhere? Edit: It seems that it's the settings designer that crashes. Partially Solved:If I add a (whatever).config file, then rename it to .settings and change it's file type to C/C++ Code (don't ask how I figured this out..) then I can add to it settings, but if I do add something that has any connection to the form then automatically a (whatever).config with thew same name spawns (which is identical to the (whatever).setting even if change one of them) and at the stdafx.cpp a #include '(whatever).h' appears, which is a problem, because there is not such a header. (if I erase it or just create a blank (whatever).h it doesn't work. Apparently I have to somehow connect all the data in the (w/e).settings to (w/e).h as well or maybe something else) Anyone had this problem before? Anyone has any ideas?

  In my Android application, I use a bunch of open source libraries such as libyuv, libvpx, libcrypto, libssl, etc. Some of them come with Android.mk. For others, I hand-crafted Android.mk. The code is built only for arm for now. Here is my Application.mk: APP_ABI := armeabi-v7a APP_OPTIM := release APP_STL := gnustl_static APP_CPPFLAGS := -frtti I am looking for way to generate binaries that are optimized for neon. Browsing the net, I found the following setting that someone is using in his Android.mk: LOCAL_CFLAGS += -mfloat-abi=softfp -mfpu=neon -march=armv7 I wonder if I simply put this setting in Application.mk, will it automatically get applied across all the libraries? A step before each library is built is the following: include $(CLEAR_VARS) Is it better to include LOCAL_CFLAGS directive after this line (instead of including it in Application.mk)? Finally, why doesn't ndk-build automatically optimize for neon when it sees armabi in Application.mk? Regards.

• Ant telnet is hanging on a simple task

When I run ant (version 1.8, in bash) (I have downloaded and copied over the jars for commons-net-2.0 and jakarta-oro-2.0.8 already), this is the output I get: Buildfile: /home/sagar/build.xml telnet: and then it just sits there. When I do a "who" on my server, I can see "System" waiting on login. But there is no progress after this. I can telnet into the server using normal telnet means (putty, bash, etc). I even tried the full telnet command instead of read/write: <telnet server="10.1.1.1" userid="root" password="root"> Any help is much appreciated!
