• Is AMQP suitable as both an intra and inter-machine software bus?

  I'm trying to get my head around AMQP. It looks great for inter-machine (cluster, LAN, WAN) communication between applications but I'm not sure if it is suitable (in architectural, and current implementation terms) for use as a software bus within one machine. Would it be worth pulling out a current high performance message passing framework to replace it with AMQP, or is this falling into the same trap as RPC by blurring the distinction between local and non-local communication? I'm also wary of the performance impacts of using a WAN technology for intra-machine communications, although this may be more of an implementation concern than architecture. War stories would be appreciated.

  I love to use Google Documents as MS Word and MS Excel replacements for online collaboration. However, now I need to discuss architecture layout for my software. Nothing too fancy, perhaps a little (pseudo-)UML, but mostly basic shapes (rectangles, ellipses etc.) with labels, connected by thin lines or arrows. In olden Windows times I'd go for Visio, and be happy. But now I want to use online tool. Preferably free. No need for code reverse engineering etc., just plain assisted vector drawing. Any advice? What do you use?

• MVC - Loading DLL programmactically

  I'm trying to implement a plugable architecture in asp.net MVC. I have based my modules on the following article - http://www.wynia.org/wordpress/2008/12/aspnet-mvc-plugins. I have a DLL that contains a simple controller, and a view. The view is an embedded resource within the DLL. The problem I'm having is, if I drop the DLL in the bin directory of my MVC application manually, then everything works perfectly i.e. the assembly loads correctly. But when I copy the DLL from a file upload input box (via a web form) into the bin directoy, I get an error (The module was expected to contain an assembly manifest.) when trying to load the assembly. I use the same DLL, what could the problem be?

• What goes between SQL Server and Client?

  This question is an updated version of a previous question I have asked on here. I am new to client-server model with SQL Server as the relational database. I have read that public access to SQL Server is not secure. If direct access to the database is not a good practice, then what kind of layer should be placed between the server and the client? Note that I have a desktop application that will serve as the client and a remote SQL Server database that will provide data to the client. The client will input their username and password in order to see their data. I have heard of terms like VPN, ISA, TMG, Terminal Services, proxy server, and so on. I need a fast and secure n-tier architecture. P.S. I have heard of web services in front of the database. Can I use WCF to retrieve, update, insert data? Would it be a good approach in terms of security and performance?

• Why state cannot be part of Presenter in MVP?

  I read http://www.codeproject.com/KB/architecture/MVC_MVP_MVVM_design.aspx and it said: As powerful as they are, both MVC and MVP have their problems. One of them is persistence of the View’s state. For instance, if the Model, being a domain object, does not know anything about the UI, and the View does not implement any business logic, then where would we store the state of the View’s elements such as selected items? Fowler comes up with a solution in the form of a Presentation Model pattern. I wonder why Presenter can't hold View state? It already holds all View logic. As far as I understand, in MVC and MVP the state is kept in View. In PM and MVVM the state is kept in the Presentation Model. Why can't Presenter follow PM in this particular case and contain the state of the view?   Is there a pattern, Xml structure, architecture technique we can use to create simple data holder class code that we can deserialise to/from and do that at runtime? We're in the early design stage of a .Net project and one of our goals is to make the resulting system extensible through configuration without needing a developer. We need to support new sources of data, typcially delivered as Xml messages. Currently we convert/deserialise the messages into simple classes and then use an already existing language which can manipulate those classes as we need. That works well when you have a developer to map the Xml to simple class, create the class and then write the deserialisation, but it's not extensible for for an administrator. Our target user audience is high end DBA and/or network admin - people who can handle Xml but may not know C#.

  I have web site which serves web services (a mixture of .asmx and WCF) which is mostly using LINQ to SQL and System.Transactions. Occaisionally we see the transaction get promoted to a distributed transaction which causes problems because our web servers are isolated from our databases in such a way that it is not possible for us to use MSDTC. I have configured tracing for System.Transactions by adding the following to my web.config: <system.diagnostics> <sources> <source name="System.Transactions" switchValue="Information"> <listeners> <add name="tx" type="System.Diagnostics.XmlWriterTraceListener" initializeData="tx.log" /> </listeners> </source> </sources> </system.diagnostics> It's very interesting and shows me when the transaction is promoted, but I find that it doesn't really help be discover why. Is there an equivalent tracing mechanism for ADO.NET that will show me when connections are created, including the variables that affect pooling (user, cnn string, transaction scope)?

  I am new to building static libraries and would like to create 2(+) libraries each of which has some unique code and some shared code. My intention is that other projects will link one or more of these static libraries. Util.h/m <-- Shared ImplOne.h/m <-- Unique to 'ImplOne' ImplTwo.h/m <-- Unique to 'ImplTwo' I am using XCode and generating the libraries by building Util.m and ImplOne.m in one case, and Util.m and ImplTwo.m in the other. Of course the issue is that I now cannot use these libraries together because they will have duplicate symbols. What is a better architecture for this situation?

• How can I take advantage of IObservable/IObserver to get rid of my "god object"?

  In a system I'm currently working on, I have many components which are defined as interfaces and base classes. Each part of the system has some specific points where they interact with other parts of the system. For example, the data readying component readies some data which eventually needs to go to the data processing portion, the communications component needs to query different components for their status for relaying to the outside, etc. Currently, I glue these parts of the system together using a "god object", or an object with intimate knowledge of different parts of the system. It registers with events over here and shuttles the results to methods over there, creates a callback method here and returns the result of that method over there, and passes many requests through a multi-threaded queue for processing because it "knows" certain actions have to run on STA threads, etc. While its convenient, it concerns me that this one type knows so much about how everybody else in the system is designed. I'd much prefer a more generic hub that can be given instances which can expose events or methods or callbacks or that can consume these. I've been seeing more about the IObservable/IObserver features of the reactive framework and that are being rolled into .NET 4.0 (I believe). Can I leverage this pattern to help replace my "god object"? How should I go about doing this? Are there any resources for using this pattern for this specific purpose?

• How would I implement separate databases for reading and writing operations?

  I am interested in implementing an architecture that has two databases one for read operations and the other for writes. I have never implemented something like this and have always built single database, highly normalised systems so I am not quite sure where to begin. I have a few parts to this question. 1. What would be a good resource to find out more about this achitecture? 2. Is it just a question of replicating between two identical schemas, or would your schemas differ depending on the operations, would normalisation vary too? 3. How do you insure that data written to one database is immediately available for reading from the second? Any further help, tips, resources would be appreciated. Thanks.

  I have a site that has certain urls that point to pages with permanent data and others that point to dynamic web pages. Google indexes both these regularly. By the time a user finds one of the dynamic content urls, the data on the page has already changed and the user does not find what he was looking for. Further, the dynamic url pages contains links to the permanent urls (which I want Google or any crawler to index). • Creating an n tiered application

  I am researching architecture for a project that will be started next year. It is mainly a c# web app, but there will be a service layer so that it can talk to our facebook/iphone app. There are a few long running processes, which means that I will be creating a windows process that can handle those. I’m thinking of putting the entire app in the windows service instead of just the long running processes. Asp - wcf - bll Vs Asp - bll I know this will be more scalable. But it is probably overkill as everything will be running on the same box, even the database. This could change down the road if the server can’t handle the traffic like marketing says it will. I don’t have access to production hardware, just my crappy testing box and my local machine. Has anyone decided to go down this route? But mostly, what is the best way to test both methods to get some metrics?

Use select or poll or any other function. How to process the response of the client? On large scale we cannot create the one thread for each client.   Hello, We have to communicate with a C++ component from a J2ee web application and my proposal involved using JMS server to communicate with the C++ component which is located on other machine. However the developer of the C++ component wants me to open up TCP/IP sockets from the webapplication and communicate over XML. My view is that socket programming in web application is error prone and will not scale well since there is a limited amount of sockets that can be opened up. Please let me have your architecture/design preference on using JMS vs TCP/IP sockets. Thank you

• Restore Bak File created on Windows XP pro in Windows XP Pro 64

  I have a situation that I need help with. I backed up my Files on Windows XP using the System BackUp utility/wizard, and then Installed a new operating system on the machine. Now I want to restore my old files via the .bak file but it is not being recognized at all. Did I do this wrong or is there a way to still get back my old files on my new OS ? Thanks in advance!
