• Celery daemon as a Ubuntu service does not consume tasks while running from terminal does

  On Ubuntu 11.10, I have to issue python tasks from django using celery. I'm currently testing on the same machine but eventually the celery worker should run on a remote machine. django uses the following settings: BROKER_HOST = "127.0.0.1" BROKER_PORT = 5672 BROKER_VHOST = "/my_vhost" BROKER_USER = "celery" BROKER_PASSWORD = "celery" I can also see my task queued in http://localhost:55672/#/queues the celery daemon uses the following configuration (celeryconfig.py): BROKER_HOST = "127.0.0.1" BROKER_PORT = 5672 BROKER_USER = "celery" BROKER_PASSWORD = "celery" BROKER_VHOST = "/my_vhost" CELERY_RESULT_BACKEND = "amqp" import os import sys sys.path.append(os.getcwd()) CELERY_IMPORTS = ("tasks", ) running celeryd -l info works well and now I want to run it as a service. I've followed the instructions from http://ask.github.com/celery/cookbook/daemonizing.html and now I'm trying to run it using: sudo /etc/init.d/celeryd start But the message is not being consumed, no error in the celery log either. /etc/default/celeryd CELERYD_NODES="w1" CELERYD_CHDIR="/path/to/django/project" CELERYD_OPTS="--time-limit=300 --concurrency=1" CELERY_CONFIG_MODULE="celeryconfig" # %n will be replaced with the nodename. • MySQL Not Turning On

  I have an amazon ec2 instance running on the Amazon Linux AMI and its a micro instance. I wanted to install Django onto my server so I entered these commands wget http://www.mlsite.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/go wget http://www.mlsite.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/django.conf chmod 744 go ./go So after I was done, I ran sudo service httpd restart and sudo service mysqld restart and This is what came up for mysqld: Stopping mysqld: [ OK ] MySQL Daemon failed to start. Starting mysqld: [FAILED] So I deleted the django files /usr/local/python2.6.8/site-packages/django_registration.egg and I tried finding the error and I found out that in my /etc/my.cnf for the socket, it said socket=/var/lock/subsys/mysql.sock so I went to /var/lock/subsys/ and there was no mysql.sock. I tried creating one using vim but it still didn't work. Then I checked the error log and it said Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) So I am pretty much lost right now. I know it has something to do with mysql.sock If you might know a reason why this was caused could you please let me know? I have a wordpress site on my server, so i kind of need MySQL to work.   I would like to create web application with admin/checkout sections being secured. Assuming I have SSL set up for subdomain.mydomain.com I would like to make sure that all that top-secret stuff ;) like checkout pages and admin section is transferred securely. Would it be ok to structure my application as below? subdomain.mydomain.com adminSectionFolder adminPage1.php adminPage2.php checkoutPagesFolder checkoutPage1.php checkoutPage2.php checkoutPage3.php homepage.php loginPage.php someOtherPage.php someNonSecureFolder nonSecurePage1.php nonSecurePage2.php nonSecurePage3.php imagesFolder image1.jpg image2.jpg image3.jpg Users would access my web application via http as there is no need for SSL for homepage and similar. Checkout/admin pages would have to be accessed via https though (that I would ensure via .htaccess redirects). I would also like to have login form on every page of the site, including non-secure pages. Now my questions are: if I have form on non-secure page e.g http://subdomain.mydomain.com/homepage.php and that form sends data to http://subdomain.mydomain.com/loginPage.php, is data being send encrypted as if it were sent from https://subdomain.mydomain.com/homepage.php? I do realize users will not see padlock, but browser still should encrypt it, is it right? If on secure page loginPage.php (or any other accessed via https for that instance) I created session, session ID would be assigned, and in case of my web app. something like username of the logged in user. Would I be able to access these session variable from http://subdomain.mydomain.com/homepage.php to for example display greeting message? If session ID is stored in cookies then it would be trouble I assume, but could someone clarify how it should be done? It seems important to have username and password send over SSL. Related to above question I think.. would it actually make any sense to have login secured via SSL so usenrame/password would be transferred securely, and then session ID being transferred with no SSL? I mean wouldnt it be the same really if someone caught username and password being transferred, or caught session ID? Please let me know if I make sense here cause it feels like I'm missing something important. EDIT: I came up with idea but again please let me know if that would work. Having above, so assuming that sharing session between http and https is as secure as login in user via plain http (not https), I guess on all non secure pages, like homepage etc. I could check if user is already logged in, and if so from php redirect to https version of same page. So user fills in login form from homepage.php, over ssl details are send to backend so probably https://.../homepage.php. Trying to access http://.../someOtherPage.php script would always check if session is created and if so redirect user to https version of this page so https://.../someOtherPage.php. Would that work? 4.To avoid browser popping message "this page contains non secure items..." my links to css, images and all assets, e.g. in case of http://subdomain.mydomain.com/checkoutPage1.php should be absolute so "/images/image1.jpg" or relative so "../images/image1.jpg"? I guess one of those would have to work :) wow that's long post, thanks for your patience if you got that far and any answers :) oh yeh and I use php/apache on shared hosting

  Hello,All im totally new to socket programming in python. i was read some tutorial and manual, but i didn't found what i want to make python related socket script in manual or tutorial. i want to make socket script which can send some info to server and also receive some info from server. • CFStrings and storing them into models, related topics

  I have a very frustrating issue that I believe involves CFStringRef and passing them along to custom model properties. The code is pretty messy right now as I am in a debug state, but I will try to describe the problem in words as best as I can. I have a custom model, User, which for irrelevant reasons, I am storing CF types derived from the Address Book API into. Examples include: Name, email as NSStrings. I am simply retrieving the CFStringRef value from the AddressBook API and casting as a string, whereupon I assign to the custom model instance and then CFRelease the string. These NSString properties are set as (nonatomic, retain). I then store this model into an NSArray, and I use this Array as a datasource for a UITableView When accessing the object in the cellForRowAtIndexPath, I get a memory access error. When I do a Debug, I see that the value for this datasource array appears at first glance to be corrupted. I've seen strange values assigned to it, including just plain strings, such as one that I fed to an NSLog function in earlier in the method. So, the thing that leads me to believe that this is Core Foundation related is that I am executing this exact same code, in the same class even, on non-Address Book data, in fact, just good old JSON parsed strings, which produce true Cocoa NSStrings, that I follow the same exact steps to create the datasource array. This code works fine. I have a feeling that my (retain) property declaration and/or my [stringVar release] in my custom model dealloc method may be causing memory problems (since it is my understanding that you shouldn't call a Cocoa retain or release on a CF object). Here is the code. I know some of this is super-roundabout but I was trying to make things as explicit as possible for the sake of debugging. • CakePHP access indirectly related model - beginner's question

  Hi everyone, I am writing a CakePHP application to log the work I do for various clients, but after trying for days I seem unable to get it to do what I want. I have read most of the book CakePHP's website. and googled for all I'm worth, so I presume I am missing something obvious! Every 'log item' belongs to a 'sub-project, which in turn belongs to a 'project', which in turn belongs to a 'sub-client' which finally belongs to a client. The Question When editing a 'log item' at www.mydomain/log_items/edit I am presented with the view you would all suspect; namely the columns of the log_items table with the appropriate textfields/select boxes etc. I would also like to incorporate select boxes to choose the client, sub-client, project and sub-project in the 'log_items' edit view. Ideally the 'sub-client' select box should populate itself depending upon the 'client' chosen, the 'project' select box should also populate itself depending on the 'sub-client' selected etc, etc. I guess the way to go about populating the select boxes with relevant options is Ajax, but I am unsure of how to go about actually accessing a model from the child view of a indirectly related model, for example how to create a 'sub-client' select box in the 'log_items' edit view. I have have found this example: http://forum.phpsitesolutions.com/php-frameworks/cakephp/ajax-cakephp-dynamically-populate-html-select-dropdown-box-t29.html where someone achieves something similar for US states, counties and cities. However, I noticed in the database schema - which is downloadable from the site above link - that the database tables don't have any foreign keys, so now I'm wondering if I'm going about things in the correct manner. • Ubuntu won't suspend automatically any more

  In the last month or so, Ubuntu (12.04) has stopped sleeping automatically. I've gone to System Settings Power, and verified (and toggled) "suspend on inactive for" to 5 minutes (for both battery and "when plugged in"), but the system stays awake. I've also tried used code similar to $ gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power sleep-inactive-ac-timeout 300 $ gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power sleep-inactive-battery-timeout 300 to set the timeout values. I've also verified these in dconf Editor. Previously, I could set this quite low to make my computer sleep quickly, but now it no longer works either. I'm not sure if this is relevant, but under old versions of Ubuntu, if I wanted my computer to never suspend (via the CLI), I would also have to set $ gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power sleep-inactive-ac false At some point, this seemed to have been depreciated (and also gave me the error "No such key 'sleep-inactive-ac'"). I found that it it was enough to set sleep-inactive-ac-timeout to 0. This worked for a while, but at some point auto-suspend stopped working as stated above. Oddly enough, the sleep-inactive-ac key is still present when I look via dconf editor. However, when I click it, it says "no schema", and the summary, etc. fields are blank. To test if the dconf power plugin was working, I tried playing around with other settings in the schema. Idle-dim-time and idle-dim-ac work as expected . However, setting sleep-display-ac to 5 seconds has no effect. I'm also not sure if this is relevant, but I've uninstalled gnome-screensaver, and installed xscreensaver. I have tried killing xscreensaver and re-installing gnome-screensaver, but this did not help. I've also had some trouble with DPMS. I'm not sure if this is related, but I'll put the information here, just in case. Using xscreensaver, I set Power Management to enabled, with standby and suspend timeouts to 10 minutes. I've verified these settings in ~/.xscreensaver and xset q. However, the screen blanks after about 30 seconds. If I turn off DPMS (either via xscreensaver GUI or modifying ~/.xscreensaver), it won't blank at all, so I know that DPMS is partially reading the xscreensaver settings. -- edit I've attempted more troubleshooting, by creating a new user account, then logging out of the main account and into the new account. I've tried modifying the timeouts via dconf, but get the same results as above (i.e. it doesn't work, nor does sleep-display-ac, but idle-dim-time and idle-dim-ac work). Also, the depreciated sleep-display-ac key is not visible, so I think that this is probably unrelated. -- edit I've since moved to gnome-shell instead of unity, and still have this problem, so I guess that it's something to do with gnome-power-manager.

  If you open up Task Manager or Process Explorer on your system, you will see many services running. But how much of an impact can a service have on your system, especially if it is ‘corrupted’ by malware? Today’s SuperUser Q&A post has the answers to a curious reader’s questions. Today’s Question & Answer session comes to us courtesy of SuperUser—a subdivision of Stack Exchange, a community-driven grouping of Q&A web sites. The Question SuperUser reader Forivin wants to know how much impact a service can have on a Windows system, especially if it is ‘corrupted’ by malware: What kind malware/spyware could someone put into a service that does not have its own process on Windows? I mean services that use svchost.exe for example, like this: Could a service spy on my keyboard input? Take screenshots? Send and/or receive data over the internet? Infect other processes or files? Delete files? Kill processes? How much impact could a service have on a Windows installation? Are there any limits to what a malware ‘corrupted’ service could do? The Answer SuperUser contributor Keltari has the answer for us: What is a service? A service is an application, no more, no less. The advantage is that a service can run without a user session. This allows things like databases, backups, the ability to login, etc. to run when needed and without a user logged in. What is svchost? According to Microsoft: “svchost.exe is a generic host process name for services that run from dynamic-link libraries”. Could we have that in English please? Some time ago, Microsoft started moving all of the functionality from internal Windows services into .dll files instead of .exe files. From a programming perspective, this makes more sense for reusability…but the problem is that you can not launch a .dll file directly from Windows, it has to be loaded up from a running executable (exe). Thus the svchost.exe process was born. So, essentially a service which uses svchost is just calling a .dll and can do pretty much anything with the right credentials and/or permissions. If I remember correctly, there are viruses and other malware that do hide behind the svchost process, or name the executable svchost.exe to avoid detection. Have something to add to the explanation? • PPTP VPN connects via NM but goes down during SSH connection

• [OffTopic] PhD is it worth it?

  So I'll be graduating next year (hopefully) and lately I started thinking about getting a PhD in computer science (to be more precise I was thinking about something related to "distributed systems", don't have any specific topics yet in mind), but is it really worth it? A PhD course here lasts 4 years and is free IF you're doing the "normal one" (which means you have class from monday to friday) OR you have to pay if you want to study on the weekends. So I've been thinking about getting a normal full time job (as a JEE programmer) and doing my PhD during the weekends OR doing the normal PhD course (mon-fri) and getting a part time job as a software dev (the main reason I want a job is simple - I need to eat). That would give me practical working experience and theoretical knowledge+a PhD, but it would also mean working 7days a week from 9 to 5 for 4 years straight (sounds like an overkill). Is it, job wise, really worth getting a PhD? As an employer do you prefer people with PhDs or MScs? This might be kinda important - I'm not from the US or western europe, how are PhDs from other countries (I am graduating one of the best, if not the best, school in my country but it's still a central european country...) seen? Are they useless? I won't hide it - after graduation I am thinking about moving abroad.

• Experience with Take home Programming Test for Interviews

  Okay this is not "programming" related per-se, but it is a situation that I believe the SO audience would be more familiar with, than say an ask.yahoo.com audience, so please forgive me. I had a phone screen the other day with a company that I really want to work for. It went pretty well, based on cues from the HR person, such as "Next step we're going to send you a programming test," and "Well, before I get ahead of myself, do you want to continue the interviewing process." and "We'll send out the test later this afternoon. It doesn't sound like you'll have trouble with it, but I want to be honest we do have a high failure rate on it." The questions asked weren't technical, just going down my resume, and talking about the work I've done, and how it relates to the position. Nothing I couldn't talk through. This was last Thursday. It's now Tuesday, and haven't received the test yet. I sent a follow up email yesterday to the lady who interviewed me, but haven't gotten a response. Anyone had a similar experience? Am I reading too much into this? Or was I off the mark by thinking I had moved on to the next step in the interview process. Since this is a company I really want to work for, I'm driving myself insane enumerating all the various what-if scenarios.

Whats the problem? 5) This code gives out of memory when used with large file(above 100 Mb) i.e. because byte array which is created. How can i avoid?   I am having an issue in SCOM 2007 R2. I am routinely getting the following errors: Failed to ping or bind to the RID Master FSMO role holder. The default gateway is not pingable. Failed to ping or bind to the Infrastructure Master FSMO role holder. The default gateway is not pingable. Failed to ping or bind to the Domain Naming Master FSMO role holder. The default gateway is not pingable. Failed to ping of bind to the Schema Master FSMO role holder. The default gateway is not pingable. The weird thing about these errors if I log into the server in question or if I log in to the SCOM server I can ping everything just fine. To top it all off the server in question is the role holder for 2 of the roles it is complaining about (RID and Infrastructure). Any thoughts as to what might be going on?

  I thought I'd share my experiences here. I work for a small business with only ~20 users. I wanted the ability to use managed client preferences to assign things like the software update server. Basically the ability to manage my Macs easily and in a native way. At first I tried the magic triangle solution, but I found this to be very complicated. Not only does it require a Mac OS X Server, but it gives you two points of failure. Additionally each Mac workstation must be bound to both servers. Eventually I sucked it up and went with the schema changes documented here. I was hesitant at first, because the instructions require a lot of manual work.   When trying to do some science to answer this question, I took a Windows 7 guest on a Server 2008 R2 host being managed by SCVMM 2012 and ran Prime95 on it to just generate some CPU usage. Here's the Guest: The Hyper-V host shows 12%, which is 1/8 cores (which is what is allocated), so that's looking correct: But SCVMM is showing 0%: I have left the stress test running for a long time, thinking that maybe SCVMM averages out over a long time (I thought it was 9 minutes, but I've been known to be wrong; just don't tell my wife).   I just built a WebLogic 10.3.6 cluster with EM and JRF checked in the domain extensions. Next I installed ADR 11.1.1.7 by first installing ADR 11.1.1.6, then patching the environment and running upgradeADF in wlst. All seems well except I cannot start EM. The application transitions to STATE_ADMIN, but then fails with the exception below. • Data Protection Manager System Protection Backups Failing

  I'm just starting to setup DPM 2010 in a test environment with a Domain Controller and a File Server. Everything seem to be working fairly well and I can get all of my backup jobs to succeed except for the "Computer\System Protection" backups. Both servers are running fully up to date 64 bit Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise with Service Pack 1. The error that is being provided is: DPM cannot create a backup because Windows Server Backup (WSB) on the protected computer encountered an error (WSB Event ID: 517, WSB Error Code: 0x8078001D). (ID 30229 Details: Internal error code: 0x809909FB) This Microsoft Knowledge Base article describes the issue perfectly and provides a hotfix. I downloaded the hotfix, moved it onto the affected server, attempt to run it and receive the following error: The update is not applicable to your computer. I've verified that I have indeed downloaded the 64 bit version. According to this thread the hotfix got rolled into Service Pack 1, yet I'm still experiencing the issue. Both machines do have the Windows Server Backup feature installed. Can anybody point me in the right direction? What am I missing?

  What exactly is the CPU Average field in VMM 2012 showing me? I'm running Server 2008 R2 with VMM 2012. My server has 2x16 core CPUs installed. An example virtual machine has 4 virtual processors, and shows 20% CPU usage. Is that: 20% of the entire system's available CPU power? 20% of 4 of the 32 core's CPU power? 20% of one core's CPU? (in which case it could go as high as 400%) Something else entirely? How can I tell how much of the entire system's CPU power is being used (all 32 cores)? Edit: Well, I can tell for sure it's not 20% of the entire system's CPU power - since the entire server's CPU averages add up to well over 100% right now.

• High RAM usage, not seen in task manager

  Hi! I am using Windows 7 64-bit 7600, with 4Gb of RAM. I have a serious problem, since something uses a lot of RAM(3.94Gb) and I see "stairs" in taskmanager, it rises to +3Gb RAM and it drops to about 2Gb and then rises slowly again, and suddenly drops. I tryed installing this version again and other versions, newer ones, but no effect. Ive even tryed disconnecting other harddrives while I installed it, and then installed NOD32 and updated it. How could I know what is using that much RAM? P.S.: I was suspecting superfetch service, I disabled it, restarted pc, and it didnt work, since the memory is the highest point when I login with password, it is really annoying since I need about 1minute to see my desktop, neither alone try anything else. After loging in it slowly drops and after random time it starts rising again. That doesnt happen immediately after a fresh windows install. And how the drivers go, I tryed older drivers for GPU, and newest ones.
