Unable to access network resources through VPN

I'm currently attempting to connect one of our computers in the office to a client VPN. My development machine is running Windows 7, and can connect and see resources just fine. The problem computer is running Windows XP. They're both within the same network. Using the same credentials at both computers, the VPN connection (using the built in Windows network connections) works just fine. So far, so good. An IP address is assigned, and comparing both machines shows they're still in the same subnet. The problem is that the XP machine cannot see ANY of the computers in the client network. I tried a tracert to a target machine on the Windows 7 box, and the first item that comes up is the .0 address. Pinging it gives responses. Trying it on the Windows XP machine, however, comes up with just timeouts. Trying to trace to www.google.com allows the address to resolve (probably part of the cached resolutions), but results in just timeouts. I double-checked to make sure that the Windows firewall was not on, and trying to open the settings brings up a notification that the firewall service wasn't running, which leads me to believe that it's definitely not on. From my best guess, I've managed to connect the XP machine to a black hole of some sort. There's obviously something strange going on, but I'm not sure where I should be looking.

Windows 7 Aero theme's "greyed out" - no found fix

Brand new machine that was working fine then randomly it changed the theme when I booted into a sort of "basic" theme (white task bar, no see through windows etc) I've done and attempted many fixes and I still don't understand why it doesn't work. I've tried these two solutions: "How to enable Windows 7 Aero Theme" and "Windows 7 Aero Themes Greyed out" These solutions included registy changes, stopping/starting services, and force starting the aero theme. The closest I got seems to be when I went into: Control panel (category view) Find and fix problems (System and Security) Display Aero Desktop Effects I follow through the wizard and let it do its thing and then I get an error window that pops up: Personalization - "This theme can't be applied to the desktop. Try clicking a diffrent theme." That's what I get from the wizard. What can I do? My drivers are all up to date, there are no viruses on the computer, directx is installed and updated, and the registry is all correct. EDIT: When I boot the computer, I get a notification stating that windows failed to communicate with the windows desktop services.

Why does Exchange 2003 silently reject emails with large attachments?

Our environment: Exchange Server 2003 Standard, single instance, running on Windows Server 2003 Standard. configured to not send/receive mail with attachments larger than 10 MB. NDRs are not enabled. The issue: When an external sender sends an email with an attachment larger than 10MB, Exchange, as configured, does not receive the message. However, the sender of that message does not receive any notifications from his own mail server that the message could not be delivered due to attachment size. However, if an external user tries to send an email to a non-existent user, they do receive a message from their mail server indicating that the user does not exist. Why is that, and is there anything I can do about it? It would be nice if the sender received notification that the attachment file size exceeds our limits and their message was never received... Update The Exchange server has a SpamAssassin box in front of it... could that have something to do with it? Here is one of the last lines from SpamAssassin's logs when searching for my test e-mails: mail postfix/smtp[19133]: 2B80917758: to=, relay=10.0.0.8[10.0.0.8]:25, delay=4.3, delays=2.6/0/0/1.7, dsn=2.6.0, status=sent (250 2.6.0 Queued mail for delivery) My assumption is that Spam Assassin thinks the message is OK and is forwarding it off to Exchange. Update I've verified that Exchange is receiving the message and generating an NDR. However, delivery of NDRs are disabled to prevent Backscatter. Is there something that I can do to get Exchange to send a bounce message to the sending mail server (or verify that message is being sent) so the sending mail server can notify its sender of the bounce?

HP Power Manager SMTP setup doesn't have space for username & password

Is there some way to configure HP Power Manager to not assume that there's an email server running locally? We recently acquired an HP T1500 G3 UPS, which we're trying to control using HP Power Manager 4.2. The main reason we wanted to get this particular UPS is because it says it's capable of sending notifications (of the "Yo, the power's out, you may want to look into it" type) via email, as opposed to SNMP. Turns out, that's not entirely true. The server is running Windows Server 2003. It is not running an email server of any sort - we do that via two different providers. Outlook email is provided by Verizon, and our SMTP email service is provided by a small local company. When we use CDO to send auto-generated notification emails, we have to provide the SMTP server name, port, username, and password. The HP Power Manager interface only allows us to enter the server name and the username. Thus, not surprisingly, the emails never go anywhere. Help?

Nagios check_host_alive and check_ping not showing host as down

I am using the check_host_alive command to send 5 packets every minute to all my routers at remote locations. I noticed today I received a notification from The AT&T Global Client Support Center that a router was down (which can take 5-30 minutes to send these notices out) and never received a notice from Nagios. I went onto Nagios and it is was showing the host as alive with a latency of 0ms. This tells me it is seeing the automated response from my router in the data center that, "TTL expired in transit" as a reply from the remote router. Is there anyway for me to tell nagios to check where the reply is comming from? I feel like other people have to of had this issue... I tested it with the check_ping command and it produced the same results. I have the command defined has %hostname% and the proper IP in the host definition, and it works fine for telling me the latency is high. Any ideas are welcome, I have already exercised my Google skills with no results. Postfix cannot deliver mail to Cyrus mailbox on Ubuntu 11.10 server

I have installed and configured Postfix and Cyrus IMAP server with webcyradm according to this document - http://www.delouw.ch/linux/Postfix-Cyrus-Web-cyradm-HOWTO/html/index.html . I can access webcyradm interface, I can create new domains and new users, and I can login via IMAP after creating the user account. However, Postfix fails to deliver mail to cyrus mailboxes. Mail log contains errors shown below. Installing any IMAP server other than cyrus is not an option because it is needed by the web application. Please advise me how to make Postfix deliver email to cyrus mailboxes. The solution should not necessary include web-cyradm, but there should be a web interface for managing mail domains and mailboxes as user-friendly as possible. How to find out what is causing a slow down of the application on this server?

This is not the typical serverfault question, but I'm out of ideas and don't know where else to go. If there are better places to ask this, just point me there in the comments. Thanks. Situation We have this web application that uses Zend Framework, so runs in PHP on an Apache web server. We use MySQL for data storage and memcached for object caching. The application has a very unique usage and load pattern. It is a mobile web application where every full hour a cronjob looks through the database for users that have some information waiting or action to do and sends this information to a (external) notification server, that pushes these notifications to them. After the users get these notifications, the go to the app and use it, mostly for a very short time. An hour later, same thing happens. Problem In the last few weeks usage of the application really started to grow. In the last few days we encountered very high load and doubling of application response times during and after the sending of these notifications (so basically every hour). The server doesn't crash or stop responding to requests, it just gets slower and slower and often takes 20 minutes to recover - until the same thing starts again at the full hour. We have extensive monitoring in place (New Relic, collectd) but I can't figure out what's wrong; I can't find the bottlekneck. That's where you come in: Can you help me figure out what's wrong and maybe how to fix it? Additional information The server is a 16 core Intel Xeon (8 cores with hyperthreading, I think) and 12GB RAM running Ubuntu 10.04 (Linux 3.2.4-20120307 x86_64). Apache is 2.2.x and PHP is Version 5.3.2-1ubuntu4.11. If any configuration information would help analyze the problem, just comment and I will add it. Why is dwm.exe using so much memory?

I've scoured the web, but I'm sick of reading "scan your computer for viruses" and "upgrade your RAM" on answers to similar questions to this. I understand that dwm.exe is for (simply put) caching bitmaps for things like Aero-peek and similar, but as far as I have read it shouldn't be using vast amounts of memory. My colleague and I both have 4GB of RAM, Core 2 Duo, blah, blah -- essentially they're pretty capable. His dwm.exe is running at around 30mb, mind is currently running at about half a gig, though it does fluctuate quite a lot. This is the same while running the exact same applications (currently Zend studio, FireFox (with firemin - low memory usage), Outlook). Every so often I will get a notification asking me if I want to switch to Aero Basic because it's using too much memory, and sometimes it will just switch itself to basic and let me know why. I know it's possible to stop it switching, but I want to know why it is using too much memory otherwise it's just papering over the cracks. One thing to add is this seems to have started after a robbery on Monday, where two of my monitors were stolen, and I had to temporarily use a couple of alternative monitors. I am now using brand new monitors but the problem is the same. All drivers installed and working seemingly fine. Any ideas why the usage is so high? We are using windows 7 64-bit Professional.

Roundcube "Server Error (OK!)": Lists no messages but can get messages according to the log file

In my server setup there are three virtual machines. One windows machine, an Ubuntu Server 11.10 and a Debian Squeeze mailserver. On the Ubuntu system I have Roundcube installed and I want to connect to the virtual mail server. What's the problem After login into Roundcube it says "Server Error (OK!)" and lists no messages. More information On the Ubuntu server there is no error in any log file (even Roundcubes log files). In the imap log file there you can see Roundcube is able to fetch all imap messages (I can see them in the imap log file created by Roundcube). And on the side of the mail server there are no error messages too. The test connection at the end of the configuration of Roundcube works too, there is a "success" notification. Even the basic login at Roundcube login dialog works without any error message. How to stop NAT dropping idle connections?

I have a TCP connection that can be idle for many hours. The traffic is flowing from the server to the client only. One might say it's kind of push notification. My home router, however, tends to drop the connection silently after 20 minutes (the value of /proc/sys/net/netfilter/nf_conntrack_tcp_timeout_established). The server detects the loss once it tries to send anything (I assume it receives RST from the router itself). As client never sends anything, it never detects the loss. RFC 5382 "NAT Behavioral Requirements for TCP" states the following: A NAT can check if an endpoint for a session has crashed by sending a TCP keep-alive packet and receiving a TCP RST packet in response. It makes sense. It's much more effective than sending keep-alives by the host itself (as only NAT knows its own timeout). And probably not hard to implement. Is there any NAT solutions implementing this? It would be great if there was a way to enable this in iptables.

No Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows 8. So, how to access similar Defender features/settings?

I just installed Windows 8 Pro. One of the first things I went to do is install Microsoft Security Essentials, thinking I still needed add-on security software, but I've learned here that it isn't required for Windows 8. Witness: Got Windows 8 or Windows RT? Windows Defender for Windows 8 and Windows RT provides the same level of protection against malware as Microsoft Security Essentials. You can't use Microsoft Security Essentials with Windows 8, but you don't need to — Windows Defender is already included and ready to go. [...] All well and good. However, on Windows 7, once you installed Microsoft Security Essentials, you got a tray icon, and from there you could access the features of MSE, such as perform custom scans, turn off real-time protection (temporarily, of course), check for updates, etc. However, Defender on Windows 8 doesn't display a tray icon – and yes, I've already made sure I'm displaying all icons in the notification area. So, how to access the similar specific features of Windows Defender on Windows 8?

Google and Bing Map APIs Compared

At one of the local golf courses I frequent, there is an open grass field next to the course. It is about eight acres in size and mowed regularly. It is permissible to hit golf balls there—you bring and shag our own balls. My golf colleagues and I spend hours there practicing, chatting and in general just wasting time. One of the guys brings Ginger, the amazing, incredible, wonder dog. Ginger is a Portuguese Pointer. She chases squirrels, begs for snacks and supervises us closely to make sure we don't misbehave. Anyway, I decided to make a dedicated web page to measure distances on the field in yards using online mapping services. I started with Google maps and then did the same application with Bing maps. It is a good way to become familiar with the APIs. Here are images of the final two maps: Google: Bing: To start with online mapping services, you need to visit the respective websites and get a developers key. I pared the code down to the minimum to make it easier to compare the APIs. Google and Bing Map APIs Compared

At one of the local golf courses I frequent, there is an open grass field next to the course. It is about eight acres in size and mowed regularly. It is permissible to hit golf balls there—you bring and shag our own balls. My golf colleagues and I spend hours there practicing, chatting and in general just wasting time. One of the guys brings Ginger, the amazing, incredible, wonder dog. Ginger is a Hungarian Vizlas (or Hungarian pointer). She chases squirrels, begs for snacks and supervises us closely to make sure we don't misbehave. Anyway, I decided to make a dedicated web page to measure distances on the field in yards using online mapping services. I started with Google maps and then did the same application with Bing maps. It is a good way to become familiar with the APIs. Here are images of the final two maps: Google: Bing: To start with online mapping services, you need to visit the respective websites and get a developers key. I pared the code down to the minimum to make it easier to compare the APIs. Xubuntu stuck after login

How can I debug an issue with Xubuntu 12.04 (fresh install) which just waits idle after a login for about 30 seconds? The login screen is delayed correctly. After login, I get my desktop background, but no panels or auto-starting apps. It doesn't seem to be an authentication/pam issue, because I can login without delay at the console while the graphical session is still stuck. There's no disk or cpu activity and no obvious respawning of any process when I look at htop. There's nothing obviously wrong in .xsession-errors. Most interesting errors: openConnection: connect: No such file or directory cannot connect to brltty at :0 WARNING: gnome-keyring:: couldn't connect to: /tmp/keyring-wFn4VR/pkcs11: No such file or directory ... Which program is locking all my executable files?

When updating any software product, as well as manually trying to replace .exe files, it says that access is denied to the file and in fact the System process is holding a handle to the file when I check it with Process Explorer. This must be a driver or something that is malfunctioning was my first though, but now I wonder how I figure out which driver / program is doing this and why it is so. Unlocker doesn't seem to be working for me, unless someone can tell me how to use it properly other than making it appear a magical wand in the notification area.... This is what Unlocker puts in my event log: The description for Event ID 1060 from source Application Popup cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event. The following information was included with the event: \??\C:\Program Files (x86)\Unlocker\UnlockerDriver5.sys the message resource is present but the message is not found in the string/message table Upon searching event 1060 I get: <file name> has been blocked from loading due to incompatibility with this system. Perhaps it is because I have 64 bit?

Todo/task manager for android and desktop linux

I'm looking forward to Task/ToDo Manager. It should work under Android, Linux(or Web). If it's very cool, one of them is OK too, Android is preferable in this situation. Necessary features: Russian or English language Possibility to mark task as finished Interesting features: (I want as more, as possible, while it's OK, if some of them isn't avaliable) Nice and easy-to-use interface Possibility to choose finish time for task. After that it's showed as overdue. Possibility to choose start time for task. Before it task is inactive and maybe shown or hide Possibility to add nested tasks. Task marks completed when all sub-tasks are completed. Possibility to make dependencies. If A depends on B, and B isn't finished yet, A is inactive as in third feature. Possibility to create task in a moment without fill-all-this-forms Syncronization between version(Android to linux or Android to web) Notification (on Android only) Features, that I'm not interested in: Creating more than one todo list sharing ToDo's I've seen couple of managers. Best I've seen now is Task Coach for Linux, but I don't very like its interface, and there is no version for Android.

Uninstall Glassfish and metro completely

I thought of updating my Glassfish server from 2.1 to 3.1.1 in a Linux machine. I downloaded the .ZIP package. However during uninstalling of Glassfish v2.1 I did not find the uninstall.sh file in "bin" directory. Following are a few steps which I did... I removed the glassfish folder (rm -rf ...) After removing files in the end it gave me a notification that it could not remove 2 files used by Metro. I cant recollect those file names, but I manually deleted that folder. I made a mistake by first not uninstalling Metro. I uninstalled metro completely after that. but it seemed pointless (it uninstalled successfully :P ) I transfered the Glassfish 3.1.1 ZIP file and unzipped and configured it. FOllow are a few Problems I am facing I cannot deploy any of my WAR file. Its giving errors saying " Error creating bean,Instantiation of bean failed etc etc." (However the WAR file is getting deployed successfully in other Linux Machine) When I try installing Metro v2.1 separately, it does not show the admin console or it timesout while starting the domain. The Log File of the Domain says it has started the domain successfully and the process is also created. But after running the command (asadmin) it takes like forever and times out without showing Domain Started Successfully, There is no uninstall.sh in Glassfishv3.1.1 bin directory. How do I completely uninstall Glassfish v 3.1.1 and Metro 2.1 ??? What are the files which I will have to manually remove?

VNC Server that can be used from command line?

I'm looking for a replacement for a custom vnc server that we have been using in my company for a long time. I need a simple executable that can be run from command line by an IT Support software without the user noticing it (our application will warn the user, we don't want him to see we are using that VNC sever). I need it to support Windows and preferably also OSX. The only option I've found is UltraVNC, but I can't configure it from command line to accept loopback connections without authentication. We have already a whole VNC Viewer + VNC Repeater + Bouncers architecture, and the only missing piece is the VNC Server. Do you know any solution you could suggest me? I'm afraid I'll end up developing a new VNC server myself, may be based on an open source one. EDIT: When I said I don't want the user to notice this VNC server, I should have added that I don't want him even noticing the installation. So better if it can be installed silently or can be executed as a portable executalbe (for instance, ultravnc can be installed and ran as a service from command line, or simply executed quietly, with only a notification icon; its problem is that I can't run it without authentication).

Server 2008 R2 boot is at 2 hours and counting. What now?

This morning, we rebooted our Server 2008 R2 box. No problem, came right back up. Then we shut it down and let it install windows updates. While it was off, we added some RAM. Then we turned it back on. The system came right back up to the "press ctrl-alt-delete" screen, so far, so good. I logged in. The system got as far as "Applying Group Policy" -- then spent almost an hour applying drive mappings. Finally finished that, and has now spent 30 minutes on waiting for the Event Notification Service. I still haven't been able to log in. Remote desktop service doesn't appear to be running yet. I tried viewing the event log from another machine. I see that the box is writing to the Security log, but there are no events in System or Application in the last 45 minutes. Digging through the System log of events from 45 minutes ago, I see a bunch of timeouts: A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the ShellHWDetection service. [lots of these] A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the wuauserv service. A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the SessionEnv service. A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the Schedule service. A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the CertPropSvc service. What can I do? Should I try shutting it down remotely, or will that do more damage?

Software for RAID Failure Alerts?

I have two 256 GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD disks in a RAID 1 array. I would like to receive a notification if one of the disks in the array fails. Can anybody recommend an application I can install on the server to fire an email if such an event occurs? Here are some additional specs: Supermicro X9SCM-IIF motherboard utilising the hardware RAID controller. OS = Windows 2012 Standard Also is it possible to simulate a disk failure by pulling it out of the bay? SSDs appear to fail close together when in a mirrored config so I'd like to know ASAP if one goes down so I can swap them out with minimum delay. UPDATE 26th June 2013 ------------------------ None of the software that ships with the Supermicro X9SCM-* motherboards offer support for RAID monitoring. As has been pointed out here, these boards are built on an Intel chipset for RAID and so I installed Intel Rapid Storage Technology that supports automated email notifications on RAID failure http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/imsm/sb/cs-020784.htm One small issue, the software only allows you to send email notifications without SMTP authentication. How does KMS (Windows Server 2008 R2) differentiate clients?

I have recently installed a KMS Server in our domain and deployed 75 new Windows 7 machines using an image I made using Acronis True Image. There are 2 variations of this image rolled out currently. When I go to activate the machines it returns that the KMS count is not sufficient. On the server with a slmgr /dlv it shows: Key Management Service is enabled on this machine. Current count: 2 Listening on Port: 1688 DNS publishing enabled KMS Priority: Normal KMS cumulative requests received from clients: 366 Failed requests received: 2 Requests with License status unlicensed: 0 Requests with License status licensed: 0 Requests with License status Initial Grace period: 1 Requests with License statusLicense expired or hardware out of tolerance: 0 Requests with License status Non genuine grace period: 0 Requests with License status Notification: 363 Is it to do with the fact that I've used the same image for all the PC's? If so how do I get round this. Would changing the SID help? OK knowing I've been thick whats the best way to rectify the situation. Can I sysprep the machines to OOBE on each individual machine? Or would NewSID work?

What is a good replacement for StumbleUpon's Share feature?

I've been using Firefox + StumbleUpon's Share feature with my friends for years now. It is a perfect way of sharing links directly with your friends. You first need to be Following each other and then on the SU toolbar, you can "Share" with your list of friends. You can even include a personal message. The friend will receive a notification with # of pending shares in their toolbar (bold & red). They click the stumble button and it will navigate to the site plus show a yellow bar with your message. I literally use it daily. But then Chrome came along and beat the tar out of Firefox (and other browsers) in terms of usability and performance. But it doesn't (and never will according to Google) allow toolbars. StumbleUpon's solution in Chrome is a fake toolbar (html) that gets injected into the page you're viewing. It's buggy and performance is low. Overall it's not an acceptable solution. I'm looking for a replacement with something that is just as easy to send/receive links. I was thinking of Twitter DM's and using a bookmarklet, but I wanted to survey the collective for other options Thanks in advance for your input!

How to disable/enable network, switch to Wifi in Android emulator?

I'm working on a Push Notifications library for Android (http://deaconproject.org/) that needs to take action if network connectivity is interrupted or changed - namely, it needs to re-initiate a server connection or pause its operation until network connectivity is available. This seems to work fine using and Android BroadcastReceiver for "android.net.ConnectivityManager.CONNECTIVITY_ACTION". My problem is in testing the library - I would like to automatically test the library's response to a broken network connection, or a transition from 3G to WiFi, under various configuration conditions. The problem is, I don't want to sit with the emulator and hit F8 all day. Is there a way to programmatically manipulate network connections on Android from within a jUnit test without resorting to toggling Airplane Mode? I've already tried issuing commands to the emulator via the console, manipulating the GSM mode, etc, but while the phone state changes on the display, the Internet connection remains up.
