  • Running PHP,MySQL and apache in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

    Hello all, I have installed native apache and mysql,php in my linux server. I tried a page using phpinfo() and it worked.But when I try my own pages, the execution of the page stops when it comes to the php tag, even the css tag following it doesn't come to the browser.     I have changed my joomla and wordpress files from old server to new server. In the front end and admin side its working without any errors. But in the Database (phpmyadmin) Section it shows some warning messages like this.. Warning: strtotime() [function.strtotime]: It is not safe to rely on the system's timezone settings. You are *required* to use the date.timezone setting or the date_default_timezone_set() function. In case you used any of those methods and you are still getting this warning, you most likely misspelled the timezone identifier.   • APC decreasing php performance??? (php 5.3, apache 2.2, windows vista 64bit)

    Hi, I have an Apache/2.2.15 (VC9) and PHP/5.3.2 (VC9 thread safe) running as an apache module on Vista 64bit machine. All running fine. Project that I'm benchmarking (with apache's ab utility) is basically standard Zend Framework project with no db connection involved. Average (median) apache response is about 0.15 seconds. After I've installed APC (3.1.4-dev VC9 thread safe) with standard settings suddenly the request response time raised to 1.3 seconds (!), which is unacceptable... All apc settings looked always good (through the apc.php script: enough shm memory, no cache full, fragmentation 0%). Only difference was to disable the stats lookup (apc.stat = 0). Then the response dropped to 0.09 seconds which was finally better than without the apc. IIRC, it's expected and obvious that the stat lookup creates some overhead, but shouldn't it still be far more performant compared to running wihout the apc extension at all? Or put it differently why is the apc.stat creating so much overhead? Apparently, something is not working as it should, I don't really know where to start looking.   • SQL Server Database In Single User Mode after Failover

    Here is a weird situation we experienced with a SQL Server 2008 Database Mirroring Failover. We have a pair of mirrored databases running in high-availability mode and both the principal and mirror showed as synchronized. As part of some maintenance I triggered a manual failover of the principal to the mirror. However after the failover the principal was now in single-user mode instead of the expected "Principal/Synchronized" state we usually get. The database had been in multi-user mode on the previous principal before this had happened. We ended up stopping all applications, restarting the SQL Server instances, and executing "ALTER DATABASE ... SET MULTI_USER" to bring the database back to the expected "Principal/Synchronized" state in a multi-user mode. Question. Does anyone know where SQL Server stores information about whether a database should be in single-user mode or not? I'm wondering if there is some system database or table that has this setting recorded somewhere. In particular we had an incident once with the database on the original principal (the one I was failing over to) where when trying to detach the database it was put into single-user mode. I'm wondering if that setting is cached somewhere and is the reason that SQL Server put it back into single-user mode after a failover.

    Hello everyone, I have what I suspect to be a logic problem with an algorithm I am using to work with Video timecode in PHP. All help is appreciated. The Objective Well basically I want to work with timecode and perform calculations For those not familiar with timecode it looks like this 01:10:58:12 or HH:MM:SS:FF 'AKA' HOURS:MINUTES:SECONDS:FRAMES I have used the script from HERE to help me with working with this format. The Problem Now can i just say that this script works!!! Timecode calculations (in this case additions) are being performed correctly.     Present day usable solution: Note that if you use an ide or an advanced editor, you could make a code template, or record a macro that inserts '->' when you press Ctrl and '.' or something. Netbeans has macros, and I have recorded a macro for this, and I like it a lot :) (just click the red circle toolbar button (start record macro),then type -> into the editor (thats all the macro will do, insert the arrow into the editor), then click the gray square (stop record macro) and assign the 'Ctrl dot' shortcut to it, or whatever shortcut you like) The php plugin: The php plugin, would also have to have a different string concatenation operator than the dot. Maybe a double dot ? Yea... why not. All it has to do is set an activation tag so that it doesnt replace / interpreter '.' as '->' for old scripts and scripts that dont intent do use this. Something like this: <php+ $obj.i = 5 ?> (notice the modified '<?php' tag to '<?php+' ) This way it wouldnt break old code. (and you can just add the '<?php+' code template to your editor and then type 'php tab' (for netbeans) and it would insert '<?php+' ) With the alternative syntax method you could even have old and new syntax cohabitating on the same page like this (I am illustrating this to show the great compatibility of this method, not because you would want to do this): <?php+ $obj.i = 5; ?> <?php $obj->str = 'a' . 'b'; ?> You could change the tag to something more explanatory, in case somebody who doesnt know about the plugin reads the script and thinks its a syntax error <?php-dot.com $obj.i = 5; ?> This is easy because most editors have code templates, so its easy to assign a shortcut to it. And whoever doesnt want the dot replacement, doesnt have to use it. These are NOT ultimate solutions, they are ONLY examples to show that solutions exist, and that arguments against replacing '->' with '.' are only excuses. (Just admit you like the arrow, its ok : ) With this potential method, nobody who doesnt want to use it would have to use it, and it wouldnt break old code. And if other problems (ahem... excuses) arise, they could be fixed too. So who can, and who will do such a thing ?

  • Errors when installing Open Office

    I followed the first set of instructions on this page to install Open Office: How to install Open Office? However, the last step which says to change the CHMOD of a folder, I got an error saying that the directory does not exist. Open Office now appears in my Ubuntu start menu, but clicking on it does nothing. I tried a reboot. Below is what I could copy from my terminal. I am running the latest Ubuntu. I have not uninstalled Libreoffice as suggested somewhere. The reason is that in the Ubuntu software centre, Libre office appears to be made up of several components and I don't know which ones to remove (or all maybe?). They are Libreoffice Draw, Math, Writer, Calc. After this operation, 480 MB of additional disk space will be used.     I want to make developing on my new projects easier, and I wanted a bare bones very simple template engine solution. I looked around on the net and everything is either too bloated, or makes me cringe. My HTML files will be like so: <html> <head> <title>{PAGE_TITLE}</title> </head> <body> <h1>{PAGE_HEADER}</h1> <p>Some random content that is likely not to be parsed with PHP.</p> </body> </html> Obviously, I want to replace {PAGE_TITLE} and {PAGE_HEADER} with something I set with PHP. Like this: <?php $pageElements = array( '{PAGE_TITLE}' => 'Some random title.', '{PAGE_HEADER}' => 'A page header!' ); ?> And I'd use something like str_replace and load the replaced HTML into a string, then print it to the page? This is what I'm on the path towards doing at the moment... does anyone have any advice or a way I can do this better? Thanks.

    Im used to java and creating UML.. and i was wondering how can PHP be OOP, the objects live only until you make a request.. then they destroy, so if im using a database is useless to create a class and add the members (variables) to the class, they will be useless.. i cant pass the main system object from one page to another, or similar so how can PHP be compare to jave? you never do OOP .. i mean REAL OOP.. not creating classes , in fact your index will be a procedural file with some object instance and then ? how about if i make a html form and i want to submit the data.. i have to call a file which is not a class is a php procedural file were i grab the submited data with POST, from that file you will instance a class and do some logic there.. but for me thats not pure OOP.. can somebody point me to the right way of OOP using a form submit example ? Thanks!

  • PHP Mystery Theatre - HTML Element doesn't display when served with php5, restart server with php4 a

    Get this...I start the server in php5 and a specific HTML element ('a' element with a background image) is nowhere to be seen, I reboot the server in php4 and the HTML element is displaying properly. I boot back and forth between php5 and php4 with absolute consistent results, not displaying in php5 and displaying in php4. The thing that blows my mind is that: the HTML is consistent between boots of php5/4, so both scenarios have the necessary HTML elements the CSS is consistent between boots of php5/4, so both scenarios have the necessary CSS definitions there is an identically styled sibling element, with different class name that displays properly the problem is reproducible between browsers, between platforms. I've tested it on every possible config, Mac/Windows, IE6,7,8, FireFox, Safari etc... When the server is booted in php5 there is one HTML element that just doesn't display/render. A stab in the dark, I turned on PHP error reporting in php5 (to see if there would be any clues there) and low and behold the HTML element is now rendering in php5. I turn off PHP error reporting, and restart php5 and the HTML element is still rendering in php5, and the problem has been fixed...and I can't get the problem to reproduce. This is why my curiosity has brought me here. I just spent about four hours scratching my head trying to figure out how this could be. And now, I ask any php web dev gurus out there...what the heck was this all about?

    Hi, I'm getting extra white space, that is not CSS, or nothing like it on the view output: The HTML. I've checked for ? (removed, where I could), saved UTF8 without BOM. Checked for existent white space in the beginning of each file, even at end. This is the structure: index.php - this is the entry point; MODEL/ CONTROLLER/ VIEW/ Let's say, that trough method GET, its sent the var TPL with some value. Let's call it LIST, so it pulls the LIST model, with all data and then show the right template to the user, with the right data. I used and tested, with require_once, include_once, include, even tested with readfile (just to test). The LIST Template opens the header.tpl and footer.tpl; I also tryed to remove this both includes from LIST template, but still, the extra white space continued. This is where the extra white space is coming from. This controller is placed between controller activity runs here , this is where the extra white space is coming from: $model_works-getRows(); $rows = $model_works-rows; if ( !require_once('views/list_works.tpl.php') ) { echo "Error."; } // end if clause The list_works.tpl.php, is basicly HTML with tags; I've t tested by changing the extension to something else, like html. Also, just to remember that at top of this file, we are using require_once to open the header.tpl and at bottom the footer.tpl. I've tested by removing both and the extra white space was still generated. The extra white space is being generated here: EXTRA WHITE SPACE HERE Thanks a lot for looking, ;D
