• question about a sata read/write speed

  I'm contemplating biting the bullet for an ssd drive in a server, obviously I know it will be MUCH faster than a regular 7200rpm sata2 3gbps drive. The nice thing about ssd's is often they post the read/write speed but that info isn't available for sata's so I'm just curious to know what a typical read/write speed would be for a seagate 120gb 7200rpm drive. I know it fluctuates from manufacturer and model series but I'm just looking for a guestimate.

• How to mount LUKS partition securely on server

  I'm curious if it is possible to mount a partition encrypted by cryptsetup with LUKS securely and automatically on Ubuntu 10.0.4 LTS. For example, if I use the key for the encrypted partition, than that key has to be presented on a device that is not encrypted and if someone steals my disk they'll be able to find the key and decrypt the partition. Is there any safe way to mount an encrypted partition? If not, does anything exist to do what I want?

The fact that these are android devices is not very important I am curious about the general approach to doing video walls with many separated devices. • WebDav uploads fail on files with certain characters on Apache

  Have webdav uploads working great on one our boxes but anytime there is a ; # or * (and maybe a few others) the upload fails. That is expected since they're restricted characters but I'm curious if there's a way to rewrite/rename those files on their way through. We don't care what the name is really it just has to make it up to the server. Started looking at mod_rewrite solutions but my rewrite fu is rather weak.

  Oh RHEL 5.5, there are 31 ACPI PCI hotplug slots by default: acpiphp: Slot [1] registered ... acpiphp: Slot [31] registered Is there a way to increase this number? I haven't been able to find an argument to supply to modprobe, or a sysctl knob to tweak, but I know there must be ways to get more slots based on some Google sleuthing. (For the curious, this is just preliminary experimentation to see how many virtual disks I can hot-add to a running KVM guest.)

• Using www-data through SSH

  For development purposes I'm using www-data (on an ubuntu 11.10 server) to ssh in and fire git commands and basic stuff against the webroot. I don't have things like command history, coloring, etc like I do when I ssh in as any other user, so I'm curious how to get this working. I'm assuming I need a `.bashrc' file, but I'm not sure what to include or (more importantly since I could just copy the one from another user) where it goes.

I have found that FAT32 might be an option, but as a video editor I often deal with files over the 4 GB limit. • Incorrect units in iotop output

  iotop is behaving strangely on a opensuse 11.2 server. It all of a sudden started reporting the output in the wrong units. Kilobytes per second are now Terabytes a second, Gigabytes now Petabytes. This server is also having stability issues, so I'm curious as to if the system is reporting things wrong to iotop is related to other issues. Any one else see similar behaviour?

I see that Cooler Master Silent Pro PSU has an extensible plug, showing 20 pins + 4 pluggable pins.   for sensitive data, would it be better to have a somewhat long, but memorable password (and hence not totally random) or use a program like keepass to make a super long, random password with the highest possible entropy, and then just write down the password on a piece of paper kept in ones pocket.
