  • Screen gets garbled on some web sites

    I have a Gateway notebook with graphics card 01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS690M [Radeon X1200 Series] with open source driver Linux version 2.6.32 -28 - generic. No other operating system on the computer. When I am using firefox to browse the web, everything normally works just fine except that when I attempt to access some particular web pages the screen completely messes up going mostly white with various streaks, etc., although I can access other pages of the same site without problems. When I run the cursor over the garbled screen, bits of the image recompose themselves, at least partially, and I can continue to open the applications window, or turn the computer off, or open the terminal, or take screen shots, etc., although all menus are unreadable. Also, when I zoom in on Google Earth the screen completely messes up. At all other times, there are no apparent problems. Any ideas?

  • My ubuntu 11.10 gets weird lately

    I have quite a lot problems lately(about 2 weeks) running Ubuntu 11.10. First, flash playback in chrome hangs and lags all the time. While in Firefox is better, but still lags. Playing video files in the preinstalled Movie Player lags too. Second, I've turned automatic on and in some occasions, after I switched the computer on and successfully loaded the desktop, however, in just a minute or so, the screen just got black out and directed me back to the login page. I thinks there are bugs, please tell me how to correct those. Sysinfo: CPU: i5-2400 MB: GA H61M D2P B3 (no video card) Drive: Intel 320 40GB Thanks. p.s. should I upgrade to 12.04??

  • How to disable WinMain entry point for a MFC application?

    I understand that is not possible to have applications with multiple entry points under Windows. I have a MFC application and I added code for making it running as a service (main() entry point and other required stuff) but it looks that Windows will always run the WinMain() from MFC instead of my main. The question is how can I disable the WinMain() from MFC in order to be able to run my own main(). Probably the same problem would apply if you want to run the same application as a console application. What do I have to change in project properties in order to build it as a console application (main instead of WinMain)? Is commenting my CWinApp the only solution?

  • Can I assume Flash and PHP will generate the same floating point numbers?

    In a multiplayer game I'm developing, we have a few values that are floating point numbers. The back-end (in PHP) and the front-end (in Flash) occasionally perform the same calculations on these numbers, to minimize communication. I am currently making sure that both sides are using 64-bit doubles, but am I safe to assume that all calculations will be the same? For instance, what about string to float conversion - should I worry about Flash having a potentially different implementation as PHP? (If this happens, our game will go out of sync - the client will think it is in one state while the server is in another) With some testing, it appears to be the same, but I'm just not sure. Can someone clarify this for me?

  • Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Spiderman

    I have to admit, Spiderman is my favorite superhero.  The most recent movie recently was released in theaters, so it has been at the front of my mind for some time. Spiderman was my favorite superhero even before the latest movie came out, but of course I took my whole family to see the movie as soon as I could!  Every one of us loved it, including my daughter.  We all left the movie thinking how great it would be to be Spiderman.  So, with that in mind, I started thinking about how we are like Spiderman in our everyday lives, especially developers. Let me list some of the reasons why I think every developer is a Spiderman. We have special powers, just like a superhero.  There is a reason that when there are problems or emergencies, we get called in, just like a superhero!  Our powers might not be the ability to swing through skyscrapers on a web, our powers are our debugging abilities, but there are still similarities! Spiderman never gives up.  He might not be the strongest superhero, and the ability to shoot web from your wrists is a pretty cool power, it’s not as impressive as being able to fly, or be invisible, or turn into a hulking green monster.  Developers are also human.  We have cool abilities, but our true strength lies in our willingness to work hard, find solutions, and go above and beyond to solve problems. Spiderman and developers have “spidey sense.”  This is sort of a joke in the comics and movies as well – that Spiderman can just tell when something is about to go wrong, or when a villain is just around the corner.  Developers also have a spidey sense about when a server is about to crash (usually at midnight on a Saturday). Spiderman makes a great superhero because he doesn’t look like one.  Clark Kent is probably fooling no one, hiding his superhero persona behind glasses.  But Peter Parker actually does blend in.  Great developers also blend in.  When they do their job right, no one knows they were there at all. “With great power comes great responsibility.”  There is a joke about developers (sometimes we even tell the jokes) about how if they are unhappy, the server or databases might mysteriously develop problems.  The truth is, very few developers would do something to harm a company’s computer system – they take their job very seriously.  It is a big responsibility. These are just a few of the reasons why I love Spiderman, why I love being a developer, and why I think developers are the greatest.  Let me know other reasons you love Spiderman and developers, or if you can shoot webs from your wrists – I might have a job for you.   • Cocos2d: Changing b2Body x val every frame causes jitter

    So, I have a jumping mechanism similar to what you would see in doodle jump where character jumps and you use the accelerometer to make character change direction left or right. I have a player object with position and a box2d b2Body with position. I'm changing the player X position via the accelerometer and the Y position according to box2d. pseudocode for this is like so -----accelerometer acceleration------ player.position = new X -----world update--------- physicsWorld-step() //this will get me the new Y according to the physics similation //so we keep the bodys Y value but change x to new X according to accelerometer data playerPhysicsBody.position = new pos(player.position.x, keepYval) player.position = playerPhysicsBody.position Now this is simplifying my code, but I'm doing the position conversion back and forth via mult or divide by PTM_. Well, I'm getting a weird jitter effect after I get big jump in acceleration data. So, my questions are: 1) Is this the right approach to have the accelerometer control the x pos and box2d control the y pos and just sync everthing up every frame? 2) Is there some issue with updating a b2body x position every frame? 3) Any idea what might be creating this jitter effect? I've collecting some data while running the game. Pre-body is before I set the x value on the b2Body in my update method after I world-step(). Post of course is afterwards.     I get 18,000 access denied error showing in Google Webmaster Tools every day! So strange it shows for URL's with www and not no-www. Fetch as Google works perfectly for pages got that error. Google starts to downgrade my website - impressions have dropped from 35,000 to 18,000. I am using cloud flair CDN and .htaccess mod_rewrite. Any help will be extremely appreciated as I am really loosing control.
