• Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Wireless Asus USB-N53 (rt3572sta) driver installation issue

  My purchase of the Asus USB-N53 just came in today and I spent several hours Googling and researching drivers for this device. When I first plugged the device in it connected fine to my open system, WEP, DHCP configured access point. I opened Google Chrome and a few pages loaded, everything seemed fine. 30 seconds later... Boom! It disconnected and showed attempts to reconnect and asked for the WEP key and just showed a state of infinite connection time until it asked me for the password again. I'm using amd64 (64 bit Ubuntu desktop 12.04 LTS) The official driver can be found here although I had no luck with it. lsusb: Bus 003 Device 002: ID 0b05:179d ASUSTek Computer, Inc. uname -a Linux Jake 3.2.0-31-generic #50-Ubuntu SMP Fri Sep 7 16:16:45 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Solved: I must of done something wrong when I originally installed the latest drivers from the chipset manufacturers website. I tried reinstalling and did modprobe rt3572sta and waited maybe 10 minutes??? and I connected then I rebooted and everything seems to be working so far. What I did do before hand is unplug the device and typed into the terminal (once for every source I attempted to install): cd '<directory of the driver source>' make uninstall make clean Then I went into the 2.5.0.0 directory and installed that with make make install Then I typed modprobe rt3572sta This was all in superuser. • Re-Calibrate Toshiba battery meter with Windows 7

  I have a Toshiba U300 laptop. Back in the olden days (circa-2000) you could re-calibrate the battery meter from the BIOS when your battery was no longer reading accurately. My battery was shot, so I bought a brand new one, however Windows 7 still seems to count down the battery life in at the same speed as the old one did. This time, when it alleged 0%, I turned the laptop back on and got another 90 minutes of life out of it, at 0%. Is there a tool or utility for Toshiba laptops that can fix it back to being accurate? I've read the other threads on SU about cycling the battery but that just doesn't seem to do it in this case. Update: After the last cycle, the battery meter now reads 100% but the indicator on the front of the laptop is still orange (indicating not fully charged)

• Natively open .doc or .odt file in LaTex

  I have looked at ways to convert word or open office text files to LaTex format, and those have been addressed on SU here and here. These will work, but I'd rather have a native single-step solution. Does anyone know of any module or add-on for LaTex that will let one open .doc and/or .odt files without the use of third-party conversion tools? It would be ideal if it would allow for editing and saving in the same format. If it makes any difference, I am using LaTex Editor in Windows.

• Can't run init script on boot after another init script

  I have three init scripts and the Broker init script runs fine, but when I try to run the Consumer init script and then the Data Collector init script, the only process that is running is the Broker. I added the symbolic links to the run levels using update-rc.d for each script and I also changed the number prefixes in the symbolic links to try and run the scripts in the proper order but that did not work. I am able to run the scripts from the terminal and they work fine but they need to all be started on boot. Any ideas as to why my other scripts are not running? Also inside my Consumer and Data Collector I am running: su user1 -c 'java -jar foo.jar' to start the services. Also the Consumer Java class sits and waits for a message from the queue, so the Java code does not stop until I specify the stop argument for the init script. The Broker has to start first, then the Consumer, then the Data Collector. Adding the symbolic links for the runlevels: sudo update-rc.d Broker defaults 10 90 sudo update-rc.d Consumer defaults 15 85 sudo update-rc.d DataCollector defaults 20 80

• OpenSUSE Yast permissions for user

  I have an OpenSUSE 11.4 box with Kde 4.6. I am currently working to create a sandbox environment for the user, let's call hime bob. Bob isn't allowed to do much in the system, but I'd like to let him configure certain things in yast. I have dektop shortcuts for particular yast modules, e.g. the shortcut executes xdg-su -c "/sbin/yast2 lan" to launch yast lan configuration. Now, I do not want Bob to have to enter password to launch this configuration (just please don't tell me it's insecure - I know this, in this particular setting it is going to be OK). I wanted to do this with setuid, but obiously setting it on *.desktop shortcut doesn't work. There is sudo approach, but I would have to allow Bob to use all yast modules. So, is there anything more fine-grained to set the permissions for exact yast modules? Thanks in advance!

• Make PATH variable changes permanent on openSuse

  Okay, so I'm trying to do something that should be rather simple but for some reason I can't quite seem to make it work. All I simply want to do is add a path to the PATH environment variable in openSuse. So far, I've edited the following line in /etc/default/su : PATH=/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin with this line : PATH=/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/php/bin:/usr/local/mysql/bin Basically, all I want to do is have access to php and mysqld regardless of how I log in directly from the command prompt without having to type trailing /usr/local/php/bin/ every time. Am I even editing the right file? I'm a bit of a Linux newbie and to achieve something as trivial as this is eluding me. Server gods out there, drop be a crumb, please? :-)

• XBMC: Viewing podcasts in 'Library Mode'

  I'm having a great time getting to know XBMC, and so far for the most part I've been really happy with the results. I was chuffed when I followed the advice on this SU post and added TWiT as a video podcast with ease. However, when I go into Library Mode I can no longer access the podcasts I've added. I realise that one simple work-around is to come out of Library Mode to view podcasts, but in order to keep everything as simple (and appealing) to my wife as possible I'd rather remain in Library Mode so that on the rare occasion she wants to watch a DVD, she can do so without my help. Does anyone know a way to display podcasts in library mode? If this isn't possible is there a more elegant solution/work-around to going back and forth between library mode? Many thanks.

• How to create a Linux user without a password but being able to set it?

  I have a username and an SSH key for a (hypothetical) guy and I need to give him admin access to a Linux (Ubuntu) server. I want him to be able to log in via SSH and then set his password by himself over a secure connection, instead of passing the password around. I know how to make the password expire and force him to reset it on first login. But this doesn't work unless he has some password already, which I then have to tell him. I thought about making the password blank - SSH wouldn't allow login, but then anyone can su into the user. My question is, is there some best practice to creating accounts in such a way? Or setting a default password is unavoidable?

  Hello, I was working at my server, when in htop I just noticed something unusual. The syslog-ng process was listed as follows supervising syslog-ng /sbin/syslog-ng I don't know what it means. I tried to do man supervising but found nothing. supervising command doesn't exist too. Googling, I found a page about launchtool, but I can't find neither it or its man page in my system. I'm curious What does that executable/command/whatever do? Why today did I read that line in htop? Thank you. • Got Bus error (core dumped) when run the nova-compute from nova user

  I got error when I try to restart the nova-compute service on my compute node. [root@mycompute ~]# service nova-compute restart Stopping OpenStack Nova Compute Worker: [ OK ] Starting OpenStack Nova Compute Worker: [FAILED] I check in the log file /var/log/nova/nova-compute.log but nothing is logged in that file. • Limiting software installation to specific user(s)

  Is there a way to limit software installation to one particular user or to a specific set of users only? In some software installers, this is available as an option, but in most cases the software just gets installed on all user profiles. I'd like to know if there's a way to prevent that. This will be for computers running Windows XP, Vista, and 7. If anybody can point me to a related SU topic or a link, it will be much appreciated :) (Been searching for something like this for weeks already.)

• Full Screen Flash is choppy (nVidia GeForce 8200M)

  I have a new compaq presario laptop (I asked SU for advice before I bought it :-) ). It has a nVidia GeForce 8200M video card. When I try to play a flash video full screen, it plays really choppy. This is a brand new computer and is well more powerful than my previous computer so I know it's not a matter of the full screen being too processor intensive to play, or a bandwidth problem. Even playing HD hulu videos full screen was fine on my previous laptop. Any advice on how to get better performance here? edit: World Of Warcraft is able to play at a great framerate, so this machine should definitely be able to handle a simple little flash video ;-)

• PostgreSQL timezone does not match system timezone

  I have several PostgreSQL 9.2 installations where the timezone used by PostgreSQL is GMT, despite the entire system being "Europe/Vienna". I double-checked that postgresql.conf does not contain timezone setting, so according to the documentation it should fallback to the system's timezone. • Windows and Linux applications to show cumulative uploads/downloads for each app, at a glance

  I've read few quite a few other threads on SU, but they have been focused on instantaneous/average bandwidths (B/sec) rather than cumulative download/upload totals for a period. Either that or they don't drill down to application level. Resource Monitor in Windows 7 only shows bandwidth. I've just been trying NetLimiter and whereas it can show total uploaded/downloaded, it's a case of having one stats window open per application, as opposed to a table showing all applications at once. Looking for applications for both Windows and Linux (Ubuntu), but they don't need to be the same.

• How to mark received sites as read in StumbleUpon toolbar?

  In stumbleupon toolbar for Firefox there is a "92" text is displayed in above pic, these are basically sites sent to me by my stumbleupon friends, so whenever I have sites from my friends, there in the toolbar and when I clicks the Stumble button then it shows those sites to me instead any new site. You can say these are link are like new mails, so there are 92 new mails for me, but I don't want to check those I just want to mark them as read in a single click, and move further to read other old mails. So Is there any option to mark these sites (sent to me by my SU friends) as read, so that when I click Stumble button then new sites will be shown instead sites which are sent by my friends??

• Can't set 1280x1024 on Ubuntu with Nvidia Geforce 8400 GS

  Ubuntu doesn't offer 1280x1024 but that's what my monitor has -- I want to set that resolution but need help doing so. Ubuntu offers 1360x768, 1152x864, 1024x768 when using the Nvidia driver version 180. This is Ubuntu 9.04 installed as "Wubi" through Windows, I believe it's the amd64 version. Google gave me this precise explanation which is complete latin to me; I'm a Windows guy and not familiar with Terminal. These SU questions also don't provide answers, hence this new question. I hope you can help, and I will provide additional info if required.

• Wicd not playing well with networks that utilize network access control

  Starting a couple months ago (might be able to find exact date if necessary) my installation of Wicd stopped being able to see wireless networks that use NAC (Network Access Control) such as Aruba networks. But if I shut down Wicd and start NetworkManager I can connect to said networks and log in to them depending on what the NAC requires. This is the current wicd package installed: net-misc/wicd-1.7.1_pre20111210-r1 This is how I manipulate the network manager running: su -c'/etc/init.d/wicd stop; /etc/init.d/NetworkManager start' What would cause this specific of a problem to occur?
