• IE 8 crashes when opening an html file from an autorun CD

  On Windows 7, when I insert a CD with a very simple HTML page referenced in the autorun.inf file, Internet Explorer 8 opens and then immediately crashes, with the error message "Internet Explorer has stopped working" and then checks for a solution. Then it says "A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." On Windows Vista, IE 8 just opens and then closes silently, with no error messages or help of any kind. I have since discovered this is due to IE 8's "protected mode" and turning this off fixes the issue so that the HTML file on the CD launches normally. What I'd like to know: is there any way to get around this, so that I can launch a simple HTML file in the user's default browser, using an autorun.inf file on a CD, without first having my users open IE 8 and turn off protected mode? Perhaps the most bizarre thing is that if IE is already open when you insert the CD, the HTML page just opens--no crash. It only crashes if IE 8 happens to be closed when you insert the CD. And so a possible workaround may be to get the default browser to launch and then open the HTML file. All suggestions welcome.

• How to extract terms from an HTML document

  I have a HTML document filled with terms that I need to put into a spreadsheet. They follow this basic pattern: <ul> <li class="name"><a href="spot.html">Spot</a></li> <li class="type">Dog</li> <li class="color">Red</li> </ul> <ul> <li class="name"><a href="mittens.html">Mittens</a></li> <li class="type">Cat</li> <li class="color">Brown</li> </ul> <ul> <li class="name"><a href="squakers.html">Squakers</a></li> <li class="type">Little Parrot</li> <li class="color">Rainbow</li> </ul> It's very consistent. I need to extract the string within the li.name a (so, "Spot") but only if the type is "Dog" or "Parrot", and put them in a spreadsheet. I've been trying to use Sublime Text's ability to Find with regex, but I'm really struggling, and since regex and HTML usually don't play nice, I was wondering if there is a better and easier way to accomplish this. • Fake ISAPI Handler to serve static files with extention that are rewritted by url rewriter

  Introduction I often map html extention to the asp.net dll in order to use url rewritter with .html extentions. Recently, in the new version of www.nouvelair.ca, we renamed all urls to end with .html. This works great, but failed when we used FCK Editor. Static html files would not get serve because we mapped the html extension to the .NET Framework. We can we do to to use .html extension with our rewritter but still want to use IIS behavior with static html files. Analysis I thought that this could be resolve with a simple HTTP handler. We would map urls of static files in our rewriter to this handler that would read the static file and serve it, just as IIS would do. Implementation This is how I coded the class. Note that this may not be bullet proof. I only tested it once and I am sure that the logic behind IIS is more complicated that this. If you find errors or think of possible improvements, let me know.   Hey all, I have an input field and I want to limit it to alphanumerical (A-Z, a-z, 0-9) characters only, with a MINIMUM field length of 5, and a maximum length of up to 15 characters total. Does anyone know how I can do this using jQuery? I'm trying to use the jQuery input mask by digitalBush - http://digitalbush.com/projects/masked-input-plugin/ The problem is that UNLESS I enter 15 characters, the field goes blank. If I enter "012345678912345" (15 characters) in the input field then the value is stored and it's fine. But if I enter "12345" as a username, when that input box loses focus its value goes back to being blank. Is there something that I can change in the "definitions" or options somewhere that fixes this? Many thanks for your help :) Tim

  This is going to be the fifth post in a series of posts regarding HTML 5. You can find the other posts here, here , here and here.In this post I will provide a hands-on example on how to use real fonts in HTML 5 pages with the use of CSS 3.Font issues have been appearing in all websites and caused all sorts of problems for web designers.The real problem with fonts for web developers until now was that they were forced to use only a handful of fonts.CSS 3 allows web designers not to use only web-safe fonts.These fonts are in wide use in most user's operating systems.Some designers (when they wanted to make their site stand out) resorted in various techniques like using images instead of fonts. That solution is not very accessible-friendly and definitely less SEO friendly.CSS (through CSS3's Fonts module) 3 allows web developers to embed fonts directly on a web page.First we need to define the font and then attach the font to elements.Obviously we have various formats for fonts. Some are supported by all modern browsers and some are not.The most common formats are, Embedded OpenType (EOT),TrueType(TTF),OpenType(OTF). I will use the @font-face declaration to define the font used in this page.  Before you download fonts (in any format) make sure you have understood all the licensing issues. Please note that all these real fonts will be downloaded in the client's computer.A great resource on the web (maybe the best) is http://www.typekit.com/.They have an abundance of web fonts for use. Please note that they sell those fonts.Another free (best things in life a free, aren't they?) resource is the http://www.google.com/webfonts website. I have visited the website and downloaded the Aladin webfont.When you download any font you like make sure you read the license first. Aladin webfont is released under the Open Font License (OFL) license. Before I go on with the actual demo I will use the (http://www.caniuse.com) to see the support for web fonts from the latest versions of modern browsers.Please have a look at the picture below. We see that all the latest versions of modern browsers support this feature. In order to be absolutely clear this is not (and could not be) a detailed tutorial on HTML 5. There are other great resources for that.Navigate to the excellent interactive tutorials of W3School.Another excellent resource is HTML 5 Doctor.Two very nice sites that show you what features and specifications are implemented by various browsers and their versions are http://caniuse.com/ and http://html5test.com/. At this times Chrome seems to support most of HTML 5 specifications.Another excellent way to find out if the browser supports HTML 5 and CSS 3 features is to use the Javascript lightweight library Modernizr.In this hands-on example I will be using Expression Web 4.0.This application is not a free application.   I'm trying to make a radio group specifying a bunch of options, and an extra option "other" with a text input to specify. The code for this particular radio button I'm using is <input type='radio' name='RadioInput' value='Other' id='RadioInput_Other' /> <label for='RadioInput_Other'>Ohter: <input type='text' name='RadioInput_Other_Value' id='RadioInput_Other_Value' value='' /> </label> The idea is that if you give focus to the text input, the radio button corresponding to it is selected. The code above almost does this (since the text input is inside the label). However, it also shifts focus to the radio button (which is annoying, since whatever you type next is lost). Is there any way to prevent this using XHTML1.0 / CSS2? Preferably without using javascript.

  hello, I want to bind an input field to the jquery-ui slider handle. So whenever one value changes I want the other value to also change. Ex: if someone types 1000 into the minimum value input field I want the lower slider handle to move to the 1000 mark. Also if the user drags the lower slider handle to 1000 the input field should reflect that. • Cross Browser input field width stylization

  Hi, I have a shipping/billing input form and I'm having trouble styling the input fields to be the same width... Here is a link (click one of the order bottles to go to the checkout page which contains the form) The Problem: -a field <input type="text" size="X" /> appears to render with different sizes in different browsers (see link). -In addition, select fields seem to render on a differently as well. -Chrome/safari do not seem to respond to the font-size property for select fields. Any guidance on how to stylize the size of text-input and select fields cross-browser would be oh so very helpful. Must I result to having a different sytlesheet for each browser... just for these input fields? -thanks

  I have a text box that I would like to do some validation on. At the moment I have this code: function updateChanger() { // Validate input var likeMessage = validateInput($("#like").val()); alert(likeMessage); } function validateInput(input) { input = input.replace(/[^a-zA-Z0-9:\(\/\)\s\.,!~]/g, ""); return input; } This successfully trims out unwanted characters in the likeMessage variable, but the character still gets entered into the text box. I would like to stop that from happening. I know it will have something to do with $("#like").val() but the only thing I can think of is just chopping off the end character from the text box value, would this suffice? Thanks for any help!

  So I'm working on creating a very simple C program that just preforms shell commands. This is what I have so far: #include <stdio.h> int main() { char input[30]; fputs("$ ", stdout); fflush(stdout); fgets(input, sizeof input, stdin); system(input); } It works, but only for one command. For example if I compile and type ./cmd I get the $ prompt. If I type ls I get what I'm supposed to get. But then it exits and goes back to the regular system shell. How can I make it so after the user types a command it goes back to the "$" input.

• jQuery Mobile focus next input on keypress

  I have a jquery mobile site with a html form consisting of 4 pin entry input boxes. I want the user to be able to enter a pin in each input field without having to press the iphone keyboards "next" button. I have tried the following and although it appears to set the focus to the second input and insert the value, the keyboard disappears so the user still has to activate the required input with a tap event. $('#txtPin1').keypress(function() { $('#txtPin1').bind('change', function(){ $("#txtPin1").val($("#txtPin1").val()); }); $("#txtPin2").focus(); $("#txtPin2").val('pin2'); }); Is there a different event that I should be assigning to $("#txtPin2")? I have tried to implement http://jqueryminute.com/set-focus-to-the-next-input-field-with-jquery/ this also, but I found that it worked for android and not for iphone. Any help is greatly appreciate it.

  EDIT: I will contact the university about my problem after labor day weekend, but I thought if someone knew a quick fix that I haven't tried, or if the problem has an obvious fix then I could hope to try my luck here, thanks! TLDR: Sorry its a long post, I thought I should be... thorough. I am having a common issue (found a dead thread through google with no solution to the same problem) with the prompt to enter in a username and password via htaccess rights, but this prompt will keep popping up asking for a username and password when trying to access my home directory on my university's server which has the .htaccess and .htpasswd files. It does not matter if I enter in correct or incorrect credentials, the prompt will keep asking me for input without displaying my home directory. Ever since I have included these ht files I have never once been able to get past the username/password no matter what I have tried, save for removing them from the directory I am trying to access (my top level directory that I own). This kind of served my original goal of making the top level directory inaccessible to casual users, but if I wanted to use this method on other places, I would want it to work as intended. And I also like it when computers do what I wish they would, so any help is appreciated. Some things I have tried: Changing the file/directory access rights: they told me to try these commands if people can't access my files cd ~/public_html find ./ -type d -exec chmod 755 {} \; find ./ -type f -exec chmod 644 {} \; enter in the single character name/pw at least twenty times in a row, no cheddar. so I changed directory with cd ~ in hopes that this would be my home directory, since my home directory contains the "public_html" directory, so logic tells me that the ~ tilde symbol is the top level directory that I have ownership of. Then I did those two commands to change the rights on the files inside, I am still having no luck. How I got to this point: I have been following the instructions given to me through my university's website for setting up my little directory. A link on how they describe how to password protect the home directory is given below: "Protect Web Directories" instructions I have everything in order except for one small detail that I feel probably does not matter. I am on windows and so I am using winSCP to remote control my allocated server space. The small detail is that as the instructions indicate (on step 3) that I should use the command htpasswd -c .htpasswd {username} where {username} is my folder that holds my allocated server space. But this command requires further input through the terminal, and unfortunately winSCP does not offer this kind of functionality. So I looked up some basic instructions on using htaccess and it is formatted correctly such that the .htaccess file appears as follows: AuthType Basic AuthName "Verify" AuthUserFile /correctpath/.htpasswd require valid-user and this file is in the root directory for my server space as well as the .htpasswd file which has only this data inside: username:password I know for sure that these two files must be formatted correctly, at least according to their tutorial, because before my path was incorrectly formatted via including some curly { braces } without knowing the correct way to do this at first. And the password prompt that shows up when accessing my directory responded by loading an error page indicating to contact OSU admin or something not important. But now that I have everything like it 'should' be. I know this because when I enter in my credentials "username and password" the prompt pops up for my username and password again and again whether or not I enter in correct information. The only exception is that if I click cancel it will direct me to a page saying that I need to enter in a username and password. Note that I am very inexperienced at server-related buisness, two days ago I couldn't have told you what a website actually consists of. So, if you use some technical jargon I may or may not need to look it up and get back to you before I actually understand what you mean, but I am a quick learner and it probably wont matter.

• Should MVVM ViewModel inject an HTML template for default view?

  I'm working on web application design that includes Knockout.js and have an overall MVVM question: Does it make sense for the ViewModel to automatically inject a default HTML template (pulled from separate file)? More detail: suppose I have a site like this... header... widget 1 widget 2 widget 3 footer ...and widgets 1/2/3 are going to be Knockout.js ViewModels determined at runtime from an overall list of available widgets, each with associated HTML template file. I understand that in MVVM you want the view (HTML template in this case) to be separate from the ViewModel (Javascript file in this case) so that people can edit it separately and possibly provide multiple templates for different "skins". However, it seems like it would also make sense for the ViewModel to point to a default html template that gets automatically used unless the controlling code provides a different one. Am I looking at this correctly? As an example, see this answer on StackOverflow where he recommends injecting the HTML and then the ViewModel. Seems like a one-liner would make more sense in that case, with the possibility of overriding a default template value.

• Realtek HD Audio 5.1 Optical Input (from Xbox 360)

  I'm trying to connect up my Xbox 360 digital audio to my 5.1 speakers via my PC (my LCD has dual input, DVI for the PC, D-SUB for the Xbox). The motherboard has a Realtek ALC888 chipset and I have a 5.1 speaker system connected via 3 x 3.5mm jacks (FR/FL, RR/RL, C/LFE) and I get full 5.1 output from the PC. I have connected the optical audio cable from the Xbox to the Optical In on the motherboard's backplate. With the Xbox in Digital Stereo mode I get 2 channel audio from the Xbox, through the PC, to the speakers. With the Xbox in Dolby Digital 5.1 mode I get no sound at all. I have the latest Realtek drivers installed in Win 7 32-bit. Questions: Is it possible to use the full 5.1 DD from the Xbox? If so, am I missing some option(s) in the Realtek setup? Do I need some other piece of software to do this? (AC3Filter or FFDShow perhaps) Many thanks

  I just launched a wordpress site as a redesign of my strictly html site and added my blogger blog to Wordpress to keep it all in one place. I am trying to send an html email from my Wordpress site to all of my blogger subscribers encouraging them to subscribe to my new blog and join my newly created membership program, but every html email plugin (that I have found) imports your your users with you Wordpress users before you can send them an email. Is there a plugin that allows me to send an html email to a list of email address without adding them as users? otherwise I will have to go through and delete all of my users (after importing the list and sending the email) and try to pick out my legitimate users who have already signed up all the while watching for new ones to make sure I don't delete them.

In my html coding I have a section like this for navigation: <div id="header"> <h1>Guild Wars 2 Fanbase</h1> <ol id="navigation"> <li><a href="/">Home</a></li> <li><a href="/facts">Facts</a></li> <li><a href="/gallery">Gallery</a></li> <li><a href="/code">Coding</a> <ul><li><a href="/code/line">Lines</a></li> <li><a href="/code/comment">Comment Lines</a></li> </ul> </li> </ol></div> Now when I open up this .html file this is all layed out the way I want it too look (the mark up that is). My question is this, when I click on a link on this site (this site being this code) I get an a error saying this webpage is not found, but of course. But how do I create it so I can have the web pages working together? I'm not sure how to word it correctly. Like, do I create another .html file in the same directory so somehow when I click the link it reads from the second .html file? If you not sure what I'm asking, just let me know and I'll try to be more specific. Thank you for your help (: excuse my mistakes in grammar, not the worlds best in English, trying my best (:

  I am trying to determine some good interview questions to assess the ability of people coming in for a Html/CSS job, however that topic is extremely broad, and I'm not sure what sort of questions I can ask to properly evaluate someone's HTML/CSS knowledge. What sort of questions can I ask to evaluate a candidate's Html/CSS abilities during an interview? Ideally I would like to ask few questions and then give them a real life scenario to combat.

• should I learn html/css before php even for using database? [on hold]

  I saw lots of question about this topic and all of them were talking if someone want to use php for "building web pages", should learn html first or not. and most of them said yes, because most of the time you make web page with both php and html (and maybe css). But If I just want to use php for contacting to My Database (for example MySQL) and nothing more, shuold I learn any html or CSS first or not?
