  • How do I objectively measure an application's load on a server

    All, I'm not even sure where to begin looking for resources to answer my question, and I realize that speculation about this kind of thing is highly subjective. I need help determining what class of server I should purchase to host a MS Silverlight application with a MSSQL server back-end on a Windows Server 2008 platform. It's an interactive program, so I can't simply generate a list of URLs to test against, and run it with 1000 simultaneous users. What tools are out there to help me determine what kind of load the application will put on a server at varying levels of concurrent users? Would you all suggest separating the SQL server form the web server, to better differentiate the generated load on the different parts of the stack?

    I have been blogging on Weblogs.asp.net for a while now. I don't remember when actually i got a berth on to Weblogs. I think it was MS Joe – Joe Stagner way back somewhere in 2005 or sometime around that time frame (i don't remember the exact dates) that he had opened up weblogs.asp.net blog space. I remember sending an email to him and i had got a space for myself. So far weblogs has been a great starting platform for me. After close to a decade in the industry (this is my 9 year in the industry) i finally realized that i too can write and i have been lately passionate about writing. So far i just have 15 posts under my belt and close to 5 community speaking sessions. I have been lately enjoying writing and community things that i decided to have my own identity on the web. Yes i have purchased my own domain and i have taken up a hosting for my own blog. My new web identity would be 2 domains under my name – www.kashyapas.com and www.lohithgn.com. I will be discontinuing writing on weblogs.asp.net and will be fulltime at www.kashyapas.com. My RSS feed at weblogs.asp.net has been redirected to point to my new site. So whoever had subscribed to my RSS will still be getting the updated content from my new site. So do drop into my new home and let me know your feedback.     I cannot figure out how to write this program, can someone please help me?! The purpose of this method is to practice manipulating St rings. Create a new program called Name.java. This program will take a name string consisting of EITHER a first name followed by a last name (nonstandar d format) or a last name followed by a comma then a first name (standard format). Ie . “Joe Smith” vs. “Smith, Joe”. This program will convert the string to standard format if it is not already in standard format. Write a method called hasComma that takes a name as an argument and that returns a boolean indicating whether it contains a comma. If i t does, you can assume that it is in last name first format. You can use the indexOf String m ethod to help you. Write a method called convertName that takes a name as an argument. It should check whether it contains a comma by calling your hasComma method. If it does, it should just return the string. If not, then it should assume th at the name is in first name first format, and it should return a new string that contains the name converted to last name comma first format. Uses charAt, length, substring, and indexOf methods. In your main program, loop, asking the user for a n ame string. If the string is not blank, call convertName and print the results. The loop terminat es when the string is blank. HINTS/SUGGESTIONS: Use the charAt, length, substring, and indexOf Str ing methods. Use scanner for your input. To get the full line, complete with spaces, use reader.nextLine()

  • scp No such file or directory

    I've a confusing question for which superuser doesn't seem to have a good answer, and neither google. I'm trying to scp a file from a remote server to my local machine. The command is this scp user@server:/path/to/source/file.gz /path/to/destination The error I get is: scp: /path/to/source/file.gz: No such file or directory user is my username on the server. The command syntax appears fine to me. ssh works fine and I can cd to the file and it doesn't seem to be an access control issue? Thanks; Edit: Thank you John. I spotted the issue. ls returned this: -r--r--r-- 1 nobody users 168967171 Mar 10 2009 /path/to/source/file.gz So, the file was on a read-only file system and user is able to read it but not scp. I just copied the file to a different directory and chown it and worked fine. It would be good if someone can explain why this is the case though.

  • Multiple domains, Exchange 2010, mailbox access via OWA

    We currently run two separate domains where our new implementation of exchange 2010 is currently on a separate domain the users. My problem is: [email protected] cant access his mailbox at joe@domainb via OWA even though full access and sendas has been granted on domainb's mailbox to domaina's account. I keep receiving the error: Access is denied. The Active Directory resource couldn't be accessed. This may be because the Active Directory object doesn't exist or the object has become corrupted, or because you don't have the correct permissions. anyone able to help please? Take care

Find ( x ) : if x.parent = x then return x else return Find ( x.parent ) vs Find ( x ) : if x.parent = x then return x else x.parent <- Find(x.parent) return x.parent I interpret the first one as int i = 0; return i++; while the second one as int i = 0; int tmp = i++; return tmp which are exactly the same to me.

  • What folders to encrypt with EFS on Windows 7 laptop?

    Since I've been using my laptop more as a laptop recently (carrying it around) I am now evaluating my strategy to protect confidential information in case it is stolen. Keep in mind that my laptop is 6 years old (Lenovo T61 with 8 GB or RAM, 2GHz dual core CPU). It runs Windows 7 fine but it is no speedy demon. It doesn't support AES instruction set. I've been using TrueCrypt volume mounted on demand for really important stuff like financial statements forever. Nothing else is encrypted. I just finished my evaluation of EFS, Bitlocker and took a closer look at TrueCrypt again. I've come to conclusion that boot partition encryption via Bitlocker or TrueCrypt is not worth the hassle. I may decide in the future to use Bitlocker or TrueCrypt to encrypt one of the data volumes but at this point I intend to use EFS to encrypt parts of my hard drive that contain data that I wouldn't want exposed. The purpose of this post is to get your feedback about what folders should be encrypted from the general point of view (of course everyone will have something specific in addition) Here is what I thought of so far (will update if I think of something else): 1) AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook - Outlook files 2) AppData\Local\Thunderbird\Profiles and AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles- Thunderbird profiles, not sure yet where exactly data is stored. 3) AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\djdsakdjh.default\bookmarkbackups - Firefox bookmark backup. Is there a separate location for "main" Firefox bookmark file? I haven't figured it out yet. 4) Bookmarks for Chrome (don't know where it's bookmarks are) and Internet Explorer ($Username\Favorites) - I don't really use them but why not to secure that as well. 5) Downloads\, My Documents\ and My Pictures\ folders I don't think I need to encrypt, say, latest service pack for Visual Studio. So I will probably create subfolder called "Secure" in all of these folders and set it to "Encrypted". Anything sensitive I will save in this folder. Any other suggestions? Again, this is from the point of view of your "regular office user".

  • Unable to connect to CopSSH when running Windows service, works when running sshd directly

    I've been using CopSSH (that uses OpenSSH and Cygwin, so I don't know which of the three is the problem) as my SSH server application at home on Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. I have used it for about a year with no real problems, other than it sometimes takes 2 or 3 connection attempts to get through, but it's always worked within a few attempts. A few days ago, it just stopped working. The Windows service is still running, and I've rebooted, restarted the service, etc. with no change. On the client (using Putty on Windows), I get the message "Software caused connection abort". On the server, my event viewer registers the following: fatal: Write failed: Socket operation on non-socket I finally got it working, but only by executing sshd.exe directly from the command line on the server. No special flags or options, just straight execution, and then when I connect remotely, it goes through. I do have firewall and anti-virus software which appears to be configured properly, but the fact that things work when running sshd.exe also indicates that the firewall is fine. I thought the service and executable did exactly the same thing, but apparently there's some difference. Does anyone have any ideas on where I should look for the problem? If I can't find something, I suppose I can write a Windows service or scheduled task that fires off sshd.exe directly and ensures that it stays running, but that's kind of a last resort, since it's just wrapping around something that should already work. I appreciate your help.

  • Double Filter in Excel

    I'm trying to "stack" filters in excel, so to speak. I want to filter column A to show anything greater than 30 and then I want to filter column B to show the top ten items. When I do this, however, it shows me all rows that fit both criteria (only five records). I want to first fit the criteria for column A and then filter these results to show the top ten items in column B (10 records total). I know that I could just copy the rows from my first filter to a new sheet and then filter the new worksheet, but is there any way to apply both filters so that I don't physically have to delete records this way? Thanks for your help!

  • Correlating %RDY in esxtop to CPU Usage in Guest

    We recently upgrade a number of our VmWare hosts from 4.1 to 5.5 and noticed many of the VMs saw a step-wise jump in CPU usage as shown by the guest VM. We have not yet upgraded vmwaretools on any of the guests, but after investigating a bit more we saw many of these guests with a high %RDY value (50%) when viewed under esxtop. Unfortunately Linux (the guest) just shows "high CPU usage" without any insight into what portion of that is coming from %RDY (VmWare saying, "your guest is waiting on CPU from the host"). Are there any tools, /proc entries, etc. that can shed light on that information?

  • NFSv3 Asynchronous Write Depends on Block Size?

    I am trying to figure out if my NFSv3 deployment is performing SAFE asynchronous writes. I suspect that it is doing strictly synchronous writes, as I am getting poor performance in general. I used Wireshark to look at the 'stable' flag in write calls, and look for 'commit' calls. I noticed that, with especially large block sizes, writes to appear to be performed asynchronously: dd if=/dev/zero of=/proj/re3/0/zero bs=2097152 count=512 However, smaller block sizes appear to be performed strictly synchronously: dd if=/dev/zero of=/proj/re3/0/zero bs=8192 count=655360 What gives? How does the client decide whether to tell the server to perform writes synchronously or asynchronously? Is there any way I can get smaller block sizes to be performed asynchronously?

  • Amazon RDS Pros/Cons of Multiple DBs per instance

    I run two completely independent websites. I am moving their MySQL databases to Amazon RDS. I'm not going to do Multi A/Z deployment - let's remove that variable from this question. I'm not sure whether to create a single RDS instance with two databases, or two Amazon RDS instances with a single database. Ignore cost for the sake of this question. I will not hit the 1 TB data limit so let's ignore that. However, it is extremely important that crashing one of the websites doesn't impact the other. Based on this document - http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AmazonRDS/latest/UserGuide/Concepts.DBInstance.html I'm assuming that if I write terrible code that crashes one of the databases in a given RDS instance, it could possibly take down the entire RDS instance (and thus inadvertantly affect the other database). The founders of the company (who are leaving) want to maintain a few email addresses on Google Apps for them to use over the next year. Does anyone know if it's possible to have just a few Google Apps email addresses working on a domain and the rest of the domain running on Outlook Exchange?

  • Do glue records in non-circular dns-lookups speed up domain resolution or not?

    Doing a lookup for my domain on http://www.intodns.com/ I noticed theese two messages: In Parent section: DNS Parent sent Glue The parent nameserver g.gtld-servers.net is not sending out GLUE for every nameservers listed, meaning he is sending out your nameservers host names without sending the A records of those nameservers. It's ok but you have to know that this will require an extra A lookup that can delay a little the connections to your site. This happens a lot if you have nameservers on different TLD (domain.com for example with nameserver ns.domain.org.) and in NS section: Glue for NS records INFO: GLUE was not sent when I asked your nameservers for your NS records.This is ok but you should know that in this case an extra A record lookup is required in order to get the IPs of your NS records. The nameservers without glue are: 109.230.225.96 84.201.40.52 You can fix this for example by adding A records to your nameservers for the zones listed above. I do perfectly understand that the primary objective of glue records is to resolve circular dependencies. The classic use case: my domain is example.com and I want to have the nameserver ns1.example.com. This will never work because i cannot know the ip of ns1.example.com if I don't fetch example.com and in order to do that I need to fetch it from ns1.example.com. To resolve this deadlock I add a glue record to ns1.example.com containing the ip adress of the nameserver, so this can work out. So this problem does not occour if the nameservers are in a different TLD than the domain i want to look up. But however to fetch the zone information from the nameservers I need to know their ip adress right? And in order to know that i need to fetch the zone the nameservers are in from their respective nameservers, right? (or rather my ISP needs to do that in the background) So an extra lookup that takes time? If I now have glue records, I know the IP adress right away without the need to look it up - so this should speed up the resolution of my domain, shouldnt it? However my DNS zone provider (tecserver.at) replied that this would make no sense because "we are not running ns1.ourdomain.com an ns1.ourdomain.com as authorative NS for ourdomain.com. This would be the only sense for glue records. Tecserver has a glue record because the NS for tecserver.at are ns1.tecserver.at and ns2.tecserver.at. Therefore a glue record is needed for resolution.

    I am trying to run the following code snippet as part of a tool to gather and log some pertinent system diagnostics. The purpose of this snippet is to gather the result of running the command: vssadmin list writers The snippet is as follows: ' Set WshShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell") ' WScript.Echo sCurPath & "\vsswritercheck.bat" ' Set WshShellExec = WshShell.Exec("elevate.cmd cmd.exe /c " & sCurPath & "\vsswritercheck.bat") Set oShell = CreateObject("Shell.Application") oShell.ShellExecute "cmd.exe", sCurPath & "\vsswritercheck.bat", , "runas", 1 vsswriter = VSSWriterCheck Select Case oShell.Status Case WshFinished strOutput = oShell.StdOut.ReadAll Case WshFailed strOutput = oShell.StdErr.ReadAll End Select WScript.Echo strOutPut vsswriter = strOutPut With the first code snippet (commented out) I can run the command and capture stdout from the batch file. In the second code snipped, I cannot capture stdout. I need to be able to run the batch script with Elevated permissions, so I am looking for a compromise between the functionality of the two. I cannot run the entire calling script in elevated mode due to restrictions from other pieces of functionality. I am looking for any ideas on how to add this output to my log as I am running out of options that are within the scope of basic scripts.
