  • Ubuntu: Take actions when system temperature gets too high

    One of the CPU fans on my Compaq Presario laptop running Ubuntu 9.10 seems to have bit the dust. The fan is deep within the case and I intend to replace the laptop in the next 6 months so it's not worth replacing it. I have the laptop on a cooling pad and most of the time the system is fine, CPU temps around 90°-110°F. Occasionally, however, I'm seeing random lockups which I believe is due to the system overheating. How can I configure the system to: Lower the CPU speed when the temperature reaches a certain level? (I.E. 110°F) Shutdown the system when the tempature reaches a critical level? (And what would that be? 130°?)

  • When spliting MP4s with ffmpeg how do I include metadata?

    I have a few MP4s that i want to upload to my flickr account but they have a maximum size of 500mb as mine is only about 550 i was planing to simply split them in half then upload them, but i want to make sure all the meta data is included but it does not seem to be.   • How to control fan speed on Compaq Presario under Ubuntu?

    I have a Compaq Presario R4000 running Ubuntu Linux 9.10 karmic. The system runs very hot and one of the fans is wither never running or always running at the slowest speed. For a while I thought the fan was dead but I just updated the BIOS (Phoenix BIOS) and during the update, that fan suddenly kicked in at full speed! How can I get that fan to spin up during normal usage? I have tried sensores-detect but all it found was k8temp, no fans... (SpeedFan under windows found no fans either)

  • SSH with authorized_keys to an Ubuntu system with encrypted homedir?

    I recently set up a new server with Ubuntu karmic 9.10, and when I created my home directory I chose to make it encrypted. Now, after loading my authorized_keys file into ~/.ssh, it isn't recognized because my home directory isn't decrypted until after I log in. Is there a way to make SSH keys work with encrypted home directories under Ubuntu?

  • Apache - The name

    I am working on a migration to a newer virtualized server. The old one has Apache 2.2.4 according to the old servers phpinfo(). The new one with the most up to date has 2.2.3 . How can this be assuming no trickery is involved? The old one is years old. Alot of the guides I reference use apache2 in folders names and many of the conventions. The newest version of things, as I understand it is called httpd. Did apache change the name from what it originally was? (i.e. break the web server component into its own project called httpd, I realize the original daemon was probably still called httpd)

    I have a PowerShell script that deploys about 12 web parts. They have all been created through Visual Studio 2010 and are being deployed to SharePoint 2010. I am getting the following error when running Install-SPSolution for one of my web parts: Install-SPSolution : This solution contains no resources scoped for a Web application and cannot be deployed to a particular Web application. Can someone help me debug this? Every other Install-SPSolution command uses -AllWebApplications, and I do not want to specify the web application directly using -URL.   • Secure email crashes Outlook 2007

    I have a number of secure emails sent to my Outlook 2007 client. Most arrive fine and display the prompt with regards to granting access to the certificate and then open. Today I received two that crash Outlook whenever I try to open them. I've tried restarting Outlook and my computer but still have the same problem. Any ideas what might be causing this, and how I can fix it? I'm working on Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit.

  • Ubuntu PowerEdge T110

    I just got a Dell PowerEdge T110 server. I moved the boot order to CD - HDD - NIC, then installed Ubuntu 10.10, Desktop Ed. I chose install alongside other OS (even though there was none), then chose use entire partition. It showed that Ubuntu would use 160 of the 160 available GB. It installed, updated (while installing), then said, need to eject and restart, as usual. It restarted, but to a blank screen. No output whatsoever. Not even BIOS. Just blank. The monitor isn't even woken from sleep. Power cycled, still doing it. Tested the monitor with a laptop, and it is fine. What on earth is going on here?

  • Can you run Android 2.2 Froyo or 2.3 Gingerbread in a VM?

    I came across a how-to guide for running Android 1.7 in a virtual machine (VirtualBox), but 1.7 is old. I haven't been able to find a Android 2.2 or 2.3 image anywhere, does anyone have any ideas on how to virtualize newer Android OS's? Preferably a free virtualization solution like VirtualBox.   • ISPs with good upload speeds? [closed]

    I am a web developer, and I spend most of my time not waiting for downloads but waiting for my latest build of a website to publish to a test site. I use the excellent BeyondCompare to ensure I only upload what I need to upload. But still, if a 2MB C# DLL has changed, so be it. And I must wait. At work we host our own servers and have a dedicated line, so for 8.5 hours of my day I have blistering upload speeds across the web, which is nice. At home however, it's a different story. I am with Virgin Media on their XL internet package (I think). I think that means I get 256Kb upload and 20Mb download. So I have began to wonder - are there any ISPs in the UK with good upload speeds? If you know of any for other countries, do post for other's sake, but please specify which country your post is relevant to.

  • Picking up a lot of failed authentications for various accounts

    My server is getting a lot of various failed authentication attempts for various accounts. The most common one (that I've seen ) or the root account. I have since enabled Fail2Ban and ran several rootkit / malware checks to ensure I wasn't compromised. Is there anything else I should do? I only have three accounts enabled, and SSH access for only two. I have a full 48hr ban on anyone making more then six failed SSH login attempts. I do not have FTP enabled.

  • Netbeans: Install/Activate/Uninstall/Deactivate plugins buttons disabled

    I recently installed Netbeans 6.9 on a new computer. I went to install the NB Android plugin, which I have on another computer, but I found most of the functionality of the plugins window disabled. The install, uninstall, activate, and deactivate buttons are grayed out. I have included images at the bottom. This hasn't happened to me before, and searching Google hasn't turned up anything useful. I thought it might have been a permission problem so I tried running Netbeans with gksudo but that didn't help. I also thought it might have been something wonky with the Ubuntu Software Center install, so I uninstalled that one, and downloaded Netbeans from the main site and I installed it in my home directory, but it does the same thing.     I managed to configure this very nicely under cPanel/WHM, but I am having trouble configuring it under Virtualmin: when I create a new Virtual Server in Virtualmin, I want it to automatically create an Apache with a subdomain of a shared wildcard SSL domain. So for example, if I create a virtual server for some.example.com, I want two VirtualHosts: <VirtualHost 1.2.3.4:80> ServerName some.example.com ServerAlias www.some.example.com some_example.shared-ssl-domain.com ... </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost 1.2.3.4:443> ServerName some_example.shared-ssl-domain.com ...   • Allowing non-admins to run programs as admins on Windows 7

    On *nix, admins can use the setuid flag to allow non-admins to run certain programs that would otherwise require admin privileges. Is there any way to do something similar in Windows 7? This question has been asked here before for Windows XP, and the answers were generally unsatisfying. I'm wondering if Windows 7 provides a better way. One idea I can think of would be to use Microsoft's Subsystem for UNIX Applications, but I'd rather not install that on every user's system if I can avoid it. Another idea I can think of (which would work on XP too, but I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere) would be to create a RunAsAdmin application that runs as a service, that takes a whitelist of "safe" apps and can be asked (from a command line, batch file or script) to run any program on the list as LocalSystem or whatever account the service uses. Is this possible? Are there any solutions that aren't as clunky as those? Or, has anyone implemented either of the above techniques successfully?

  • What is the safest and least expensive way to store 10 terabytes of data?

    I'm a member of a production company and we're preparing for our first feature film. We've been discussing methods of data storage to keep all of our original content safe (for as long as possible). While we understand data is never 100% safe, we'd like to find the safest solution for us. We've considered: 16TB NAS for on-site storage 4-5 2TB hard drives (cheap, but not redundant), copy original footage to drives then seal in static free bag Burn data to Blu-Ray disks (time consuming and expensive: 200 disks == $5000) Tape drive(s)? I know the least about tape drives, except the fact that they're more reliable than disks. Any experience/knowledge with this amount of data is hugely appreciated.

  • How can I boot directly to a VirtualBox (.vdi) image (possibly via hypervisor)?

    I have a system image in VirtualBox as a .vdi file. I am aware of how to convert this to other formats of VM using VBoxManage. I'd like to boot this image locally on a number of clients which currently have no OS installed. What's the simplest way to boot into this VM from bare metal? I'm willing to install some minimal OS if necessary. Is this even possible? Maybe there's something out there along the lines of VDI Blaster that will load a locally stored VM?

  • apache requests failing

    I'm trying to figure out why sometimes the client fails to load objects/requests from a dynamic page served from Apache/MySql/Debian machine. Let's say 13 objects are to be loaded for a total of 185.3 KB load, with no external objects (no DNS lookups) and no other traffic at the same time, randomly some of those object do not load. However, if I perform a refresh, sometimes all of them load or some might fail again. I only have 1Mbps/up and my DNS is been hosted externally (everydns). What could be the reason of this issue? Any comments will be appreciated.

    We are currently trying to decide on how best to do SSL traffic in our environment. We have an externally facing Apache proxy server that is responsible for directing all traffic into our environment. It is also doing the SSL work for the majority of our servers. There are one or two IIS servers in particular that are doing their own SSL, but they are also behind the proxy. I'm wondering, is SSL to the proxy good enough?   • Speakers will not work after I use USB Headset

    I am trying to configure my SteelSeries Siberia V2 Frost USB Headset to work with my 2.0 speakers using a jack. My goal is to find a easy way (no restart) to switch playback from my headset and my speakers and vice-versa. If i plug my headset in and make it the default device then restart my application/web page then the sounds works out of headset. If I switch the default to my speakers and restart apps/web pages then sound does not play. I know my speakers are on because if I configure them through windows and test, the sounds play, and sounds also play when I test it through my audio manager. Even if I unplug my headset, I still cannot get sound out of my speakers unless I restart My audio manager is RealTek HD Audio Manager, Windows 7 x64. I have tried the speaker back, usb front. speaker front, usb in front port. I have not tried speaker back, usb back.

  • Linux - What do the common root folder names mean?

    I am rather new to linux, but I have installed a few different flavors. I noticed they all have similar folder names in the root directory bin boot dev etc home lib lost+found media mnt opt proc root sbin selinux srv sys tmp usr var I googled around, but couldn't find anywhere that explained the purpose of each of these. I understand a couple, but could anyone point me somewhere or give a quick breakdown of the common ones.
