• How to get numpad out of "mouse emulation" mode?

  My numeric keypad has somehow got into a "mouse emulation" mode where the number keys just move the mouse pointer around (2 = down; 8 = up, 6 = right, etc). Anyone know how to make it work normally again? None of the other numpad keys work either (I first noticed the whole thing when Ctrl + ÷ (numpad division sign) no longer produced "line comment" in IntelliJ IDEA). Toggling num lock doesn't affect this (though the indicator LED works as usual). I'm using GNOME on Lucid Lynx (10.4).

  A friend of a friend ran into a situation recently in which the agile product owner specified features down to exactly what every single user click should look like. The problem is, the dev team has already figured out a way to accomplish the business value in fewer clicks (better UX), but in the past, questioning the product owner has led to career disaster. How do we convince the product owner to change their mind and go along with our recommendation? What can be done within the agile model to fix this situation and how do we accomplish it? On a bigger level: What can be done to make agile product owners better at their job to prevent this kind of thing from happening?

• Analytics - how to tell where converted traffic came from?

  I must be missing something obvious. I have Analytics set up with conversion tracking (goals), and I had 4 customers complete the goals yesterday. I'm trying to find out where those 4 customers came from (organic search? if organic, what keywords? etc) but I can't figure out how to do that in Adwords. When I click into the goal tracking overview, I see my 4 customers and it breaks it down so I see that 3 of them came from adwords (cpc) and 1 of them came from organic. I'd like to know exactly what ads brought the traffic and what keywords on the organic search led them to me. How can I do this? It seems like a simple request... but I can't figure it out... thanks for your help!

• Can turning off drm_kms_helper polling affect screen brightness control?

  I have a Samsung R430 notebook that has been running Ubuntu for close to a year, now. Since I've upgrated to Maverick, I've been dealing with little, but increasingly annoying issues, that put my faith to question. The first one, a CPU-intensive set of drm_kms_helper, made me compile my own kernel and set polling to off just so I could move my mouse without frequent stuttering. That led me to dealing with a screen that gets dimmer and dimmer after each sleep/wake-up cycle, which eventually leads me to reboot. Since I have seen some KMS and brightness related bugs around, I was wondering if it is a definite cause for my problem. If so, has there been any advance on the excessive polling issue for those of us plagued by it?

• Temenos WealthManager: performance benchmark on Exadata

  Temenos WealthManager is at work in financial institutions of all sizes. No matter the size, each of Temenos’ customers has one requirement in common: a need for fast technology. This led Temenos to conduct a performance benchmark, running its WealthManager platform on Oracle Exadata Database Machine. During the study, Temenos executed high-intensity financial engines two- to three-times faster than its previous internal benchmarks and/or largest customer throughput. The company also demonstrated greater than two-times the average improvement in response times for six-times the number of users and data volumes. Further, Temenos secured a two-times gain in service-level agreements for batch and user-oriented workloads via dedicated or parallelized processing windows. Last year Temenos also communicated the availability of its T24 core banking system and how the benchmark run demonstrated the ability of Oracle’s Exadata platform to comfortably support the highest banking volumes for T24. • How do I get a Broadcom BCM4313 wireless card working?

  I upgraded Ubuntu from 11.10 to 12.04, until which wireless was working just fine. After the upgrade and reboot, wireless is not even being detected (When I click the network manager icon in the top panel, it does not show the wireless networks. Neither the Enable wireless option is there). But my laptop's LED indicator shows wireless is on. This is a Dell Vostro 3450 laptop with: Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller (rev 01)** (from lspci). Is any other info needed? How do I get Wifi working?

• Is sudo dd taking too long to wipe hard drive?

  I have a 200gb HDD which I removed from a macbook due to several corrupt files in startup. One thing led to another and I decided that I needed to format the drive. I used the command sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb which is supposed to wipe everything off of the hard drive. It is my understanding that the command writes 0's over every bit on the drive, which I would imagine must take a while. The process has been going for about 18 hours now. I can use other functions of operating system like the web browser and I can even use another terminal window, so I know the system is not frozen. Should I restart the process or let it continue on? Any advice will help. Thanks. By the way, I already noticed a post similar to this that was previously answered though the user was not using the same command as I was.

It's pretty easy to build one, since all we need to do is to create a circuit that can detect small fluctuations in the electromagnetic field, just like the fluctuations that ghosts cause when they pass by... • From the Coalface - 2 - Work as hard as you can to be as lazy as you can

  On one project, the standard build involved building the database from scratch producing a build log that was about 100,000 lines long.  Manually paging throught this log took hours and it was very easy to miss any errors. The solution was to write a filter that read the log file and output a summary file with each output line pepended with the line number in the original file. Sucessive iterations eliminated more noise lines. Diagnostic displays required escaping. The final output was just a few hundred lines long and the errors were easy to spot. The filter program took less time to to write than one manual pass reading the log file.  The utility digested the log file in about 1 second. Now database build errors could be identified quickly instead of after hours of manual examination or lengthy system testing. A few minutes consideration of the task led to a tremendous improvement in quality.

• External hard-drive is "clicking" when idle [closed]

  I'm struggling with a very annoying issue: My new hard-drive (Samsung Spinpoint M8 1TB (HN-M101MBB) was build in an USB 3.0 external case (Lian Li EX-10QR) and formatted with ext4. When this hard-drive is connected to my Notebook via USB 2.0 it "klicks", the LED flashs too, every second, but only when it's idle! It stays silent, when something is copying or reading from it. But when this drive was formatted with ext3 or fat, it always remained silent. This also happens with a Western Digital WD10JPVT Scorpio Blue, but the "klicks" are even louder! System: 12.04 64-bit with Gnome-Shell. Any ideas how to approach this issue?

  I’ve had loads of fantastic feedback on the concept and early curation wireframes I posted on the labs, and it’s led to some further thoughts on the topic of voting. More specifically, thoughts about the kinds of behaviour and values a platform encourages in it’s users via the set of available actions. StackOverflow is a very good example of this kind of sociology in action, not only via the set of available actions, but through the reputation system it uses to both reward and control it’s users. In our case (specifically, in the case of the curation model I’ve been talking about thus far), the main considerations are how the quality of content is judged, and how to make sure each piece of curated content gets a fair hearing. Based on the feedback and conversations I’ve had with many of you over the last few days, a few considerations came to light about how we might need to weight and display our curations, and I’ve written about that more extensively over on the labs themselves – have a read and let me know what you think.

• Shutdown issues on my Dell XPS M1530

  On my Dell XPS M1530 lapttop, I am facing issues with shut-down option after upgrading to 12.04 LTS from 11.10. Sometimes it shutdowns "cleanly". But other times everything goes down but I can still see the power LED glowing (even after removing the power cord). If I keep it like that laptop temperature increases. So finally I opt for "hard shut-down" (i.e. pressing the power button on). Any thoughts what is happening here?.   I have encountered two ways of doing it: void foo(int from, int to); /* 'from' inclusive, 'to' exclusive */ void foo(int startIndex, int rangelength); Has one style historically been preferred over the other? If so, was it just a matter of convention or was it due to some deeper underlying reason? I'm currently programming in Java and noticed that the Arrays class uses the former style. The exclusivity of the to argument felt somewhat unintuitive to me, which led me to ask this question.

• suspend error on 14.04 LTS

  I've looked around and seems like various problems around suspend are wide spreaded for 14.04 release, nevertheless I haven't seen exactly my problem reported, nor my laptop model mentioned. So, the problem. When I press sleep button system seems to be going into suspend, i.e. screen goes black, it stops responding on the keyboard and wireless LEDs turn off, however the power LED doesn't go into suspend state and CPU fan also keeps spinning. But unlike the other problem described here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1315435 when I close the lid and reopen it - system wakes up and goes back to normal locked screen state, so reboot is not needed. System details: This is a clean freshly installed Ubuntu 14.04, 32bit Laptop Dell D630 kernel 3.13.0-34-generic

• Application of LGPL license on a simple algorithm

  The "scope" of the GNU license is troubling me : I know it has been answered many times ( here, here, ... ) but shouldn't we take into consideration the complexity and originality of a code before using GPL license ? I explain : I'm working on a pet project using the DTW algorithm that I have written in C using the pseudo-code given on the wikipedia page . At one point I decided to change it for a C++ implementation ( just for hone my c++ skill ) . After doing so, I've looked for an existing implementation on the web, to compare the "cleanliness" of it, and I found this one : Vectored DTW implementation, which is part of limproved, a C++ library licensed under GPL v3 . Personnally, I don't mind the GNU license because it is a personnal project, which will never led to any kind of commercial purpose, but I wonder if this implementation can abide a company using it to open their code ( and other FOSS permissions ). Theoretically, I think it can ( I may be wrong :p ), but the algorithm in question is so simple (and old) that it should not.

• External Hard disk not workng on windows after I formatted it on Ubuntu

  I formatted my Western Digital 500 Gb hard disk on Ubuntu 10.4 and now I want to use it on Windows 7 but it cannot detect it. I formatted it with FAT(applicable to all) option. I tried to Google this problem a bit and as suggested by one of the site i tried to format this drive with NTFS. Still windows cannot detect it. Drives in windows 7 is not a problem because I tried a different usb drive on it and it works. I can see the led of the drive glow when I connect it and I can also see remove drive safely option in lower right corner, but i cannot see any option in "my computer" to access the hard disk. I am new to Ubuntu. Any help is appreciated.

• Can't install ubuntu on msi computer

  I have been trying to install ubuntu along windows but failed. the issue is that I get a graphical glitch with the colours of the ubuntu loading screen while installing from usb and no progress is made, the pc freezes. I've tryied the nomodeset solution, but when I have to reboot I get the same problem. I've tried ubuntu 13.10, 13.04, 12.04 etc...both generic and for amd: nothing worked... any idea how this could be resolved or which distribution/iso I should try for my system? thank you. • How can I avoid the engineering mistakes of PDT?

  As a developer with enough experience to evaluate a tool, I may say that PDT is very huge in size and slow in performance for a PHP IDE. It gets bigger by release and exponentially slower by the size of the projects. Add some extra syntax coloring rules and it literally crawls, code completion works randomly and building workspace takes like forever. Java black magic (-Xmx etc) eases the pain a little but that's it. So my questions are: Why is PDT like this? What design or engineering factors led to its poor performance? How can I avoid making these same mistakes in my own products?

• WCF with 3.5 and 4.0 together

  Has anyone managed to run wcf successfully in 2.0 integrated mode on IIS7 when .net 4 has been installed? I found that installing .net 4 removed the 2.0 handlers for svc and replaced them with .net 4 versions (this led to a 404.17 error in my v3.5 site), I managed to get my 3.5 site working again by running ServiceModelReg.exe /i from the v3.0 folder (Windows Commuication Foundation) but that removed the 4.0 mappings so they seem to be mutually exclusive? any advise on how to run a 4.0 and 3.5 WCF site on the same IIS7 server?
