• Refactoring obscurely commented code

  In refactoring code, I came across code that had comments. Looking closer at the comments, I could see that the code was clearly not doing what the comments said. Without access to the coder nor documentation, and without clear direction regarding the code (i.e. defects as to the fact that the code is operating incorrectly), is the best practice to assume that the code is correct, and clean up the comments?

• Current activity logger

  Very inexperienced coder here: Does anyone know of an app (for iOS or Mac) that asks for my current activity every hour or so? I see tons of apps that let you log your activities, but none that use popups/notifications to actively ask you. • Switch computer off automatically when the internet is disconnected

  Is there any free software that will detect the status of internet and shutdown the system when the internet disconnects? Or (more generally) can something run a task when the internet disconnects, and I can route it to shutdown the machine? I am downloading things overnight. But my problem is that sometimes the internet connection will be disconnected in the middle of the night, so there is no point in keeping the system running the rest of the night. So I need to avoid this problem by detecting the net connectivity.

• Automating Nightly Build Installation?

  Every night a new build of my program is made and copied to a /Builds/ folder. I have a Windows machine that I want to have uninstall the program then install the latest version of the program from the /Builds/ folder. Currently the build results in two separate setup.exe files which are InstallShield installation wizard executables. I want this to happen every night after the build finishes: Uninstall first component. Uninstall second component. Install newest build of first component using setup.exe. Install newest build of second component using setup.exe. I figured that there probably already exists a software solution for automating installations like this. Are there any software solutions out there than can do what I need? Preferrably for free?

• Logrotate Successful, original file goes back to original size

  Has anyone had any issues with logrotate before that causes a log file to get rotated and then go back to the same size it originally was? • Does Windows DFS always keep some files backlogged?

  I have been monitoring our DFS backlog and I have noticed that is hasn't really dropped below 1000 or so files. I am assuming this means it needs to use more bandwidth. So starting last night I allowed it to use 512Kbps between 6pm and 4am, when it used to only get 128Kbps. I noticed a large drop, but it never went below about 1500 files. I just want to be sure my conclusion about needing to use more bandwidth is correct before I tell my boss about it. • Linux WD30EZRX WD Green HDD & Blacx Duet 5G Usb

  I have connected up an WD30EZRX WD Green HDD to a Thermaltake Blacx Duet 5G USB dock in Ubuntu 12.04. Every thing seems fine except when the HDD idles it seems to have error ls: reading directory .: Input/output error after a while and is only fixed by unmounting and remounting the drive as root. I have the following line in /etc/fstab UUID=AAF670E9F670B6E3 /media/3TB ntfs defaults,user,auto 0 0 I have noticed that it seems to go between /dev/sdc2 and /dev/sdd2 devices on remount. I did copy 1TB last night without issue in 1 sitting. But after x mins of idle it has remount issue. Any tips/suggestions on how to proceed would be appreciated. Spent most of the night googling and all its done is made me sad. Edit (tried as suggested): root@mediaserver:/media/3TB# sudo hdparm -B 255 -S 253 /dev/sdd2 /dev/sdd2: setting Advanced Power Management level to disabled HDIO_DRIVE_CMD failed: Input/output error setting standby to 253 (vendor-specific) APM_level = not supported Seems as if that didn't help with this particular drive.

  I am using HP Data Protector A.06.11 in my organization, with HP EML E-SeriesEML library, with 4 drives using LTO-4 tapes, and i am having some problems. Yesterday I put 5 new tapes in the robot and formatted them. At that time, the robot got just those empty 5 tapes with empty space. (all the rest of the tapes are red, or with protection) Today in the morning after the night (1 backup run at night), and 2 of the new tapes are red (the properties are): Writes : 2 Overwrites : 1 Errors : 9 I format one of them, and check for each drive if the tape become red, no one of the drives do it. In the main pool properties, in media condition got: Valid for : 36 (months) Maximum overwrites : 250

• Chrome and Firefox freeze when I begin typing

  Last night, chrome began freezing whenever I tried to type anything. After a fresh reinstall the problem went away but it is back again this morning. I installed Firefox as a substitute browser but it has the same problem. I cannot even get past the homepage because typing in the u r l bar freezes both programs. Last night internet explorer froze once too, but it has not happened since. Disabling shock-wave does not have any affect on the problem. Because it is happening across multiple browsers, I do not believe it to be caused by any extensions I have installed on Chrome. I also tried running Chrome as a new user and the problem still occurred. I can open any apps or web sites that are on my homepage, but as soon as I try to type anything the program freezes. Any ideas?

• Using slapcat to backup LDAP

  I'm running an OpenLDAP directory on a Debian server, using the hdb backend. I've been wondering about backups, and did som reading on the net. Slapcat seems to be the way to go, but I keep seeing these posts speaking about it being dangerous to use it while slapd is running. In what way is this dangerous? I'm planning to run these backups during the night, and no writing will be done to the database during the night - reads will probably occur though. If there's any other backup solution better suited for this, I'd gladly hear about it.

• DPM - Monitoring is green, Protection has error and Latest rec point is old. How do I interpret that?

  How do I read the DPM info in this case? Monitoring says Failed but Protection shows Ok while having a Latest recovery point from last year. Under Monitoring tab I have Failed for Source | Computer | Protection group | Start time Computer\System Protection | MyServerName | Recovery point | 2014-06-09 19:00:00 which shows me that something happened last night. But under Protection tab everything is green. Here I have Protection group member | | Protection status Protection group ..name.. Computer: MyServerName Computer\System protection Bare metal recovery OK ... Latest recovery point: 2013-12-12 06:32:54 My guess is that backup failed last night once, but succeeded later. It then found out that there hasn't been any change since sometime last year and leave it be and flags Ok.

• Laptop with Windows 7 turns on spontaneously while being in "Sleep" state

  I own a laptop(HP Pavilion DV7) with Windows 7 installed for already half a year. Usually when I finish my work I do not turn machine off - closing is enough to get is into "Sleep" state. Generally it's okay for me, but recent several days laptop was turning on in night spontaneously, while I was sleeping. I haven't installed any app with "turn-on by schedule on when_dooes_pc_wants"-like features. Checked if there are some "Wake-On-Lan"-like settings in BIOS, haven't found ones. The power-cable is always plugged-in. Does someone have any suggestions regarding that? p.s. laptop is placed right near by bed, so when it turns-on on night - it is quite annoying and a bit scary. I think it's trolling me, please help to stop it :) Thanks.

• SQL Server 2005 transactional replication break before a configured number of retries

  We have a SQL Server 2000 Standard database with some tables being replicated (continuous transactional replication) to dozens of SQL Server 2005 Express and MSDE computers. The step 2 of the replication agent job (Run agent) is configured by default to retry every 1 minute for 10 times if some problem ocurr. Because the client machines get shut down at night (they are POS machines), we changed the number of retries to 5760 (4 days), so replication would not be broken at night and would not need to be restarted manually. But the problem is that every other day we have at least one machine with broken replication, with this error: The process could not connect to Subscriber 'POS986'. NOTE: The step was retried the requested number of times (5760) without succeeding. The step failed. It seems that SQL Server is not respecting the number of retries or the interval between retries as we configured. PS: I have restarted the replication job after changing the number of retries from 10 to 5760.

• Ubuntu can't find the correct max resolution with Samsung SyncMaster SA300

  i decided to install ubuntu also on my desktop PC (Windows has been exorcised from my life) but i am having some problems i didn't have with previous hardware configurations. My display is a Samsung SyncMaster SA300, on windows vista the maximum resolution (1920x1080) worked well, but now, ubuntu (after installing fglrx drivers) tells me that the maximum resolution is 1600x1200 I googled a lot last night, and i found a lot of people solving this (on different displays though) with xrandr. I was not able to do it, because xrandr keep complaining "you goddamn maximum resolution is 1600x1600". • Mission 26 Captures Endeavour’s Last Trip in Stop Motion

  On September 21, 2012 the Space Shuttle Endeavour was delivered to the Los Angeles International Airport and spent the next three days being slowly transported 12 miles to the California Science Center. One dedicated team of photographers captured the whole thing. Lead by Matthew Givot, the group followed the shuttle for three straight days, photographing it around the clock. The Endeavor started on Thursday night and went on until Sunday night, with very little sleep to no sleep. The only thing that kept us going was pure love of the art and adrenaline. One thing that stood out the most for me, while I was shooting, was the people of Los Angeles. It was so powerful to see the excitement on peoples faces and the pride of their home town. No matter how many times I would see the Shuttle it would never get old. This has been an amazing experience that I will never forget. My hope is that this film will show you the amount of dedicated people and teamwork that it took to get the Endeavour to its new home. Enjoy. • Election 2012: Twitter Breaks Records with MySQL

  Twitter VP of Infrastructure Operations Engineering Mazen Rawashdeh shared news and numbers yesterday on his blog: "Last night, the world tuned in to Twitter to share the election results as U.S. voters chose a president and settled many other campaigns. Throughout the day, people sent more than 31 million election-related Tweets (which contained certain key terms and relevant hashtags). And as results rolled in, we tracked the surge in election-related Tweets at 327,452 Tweets per minute (TPM). These numbers reflect the largest election-related Twitter conversation during our 6 years of existence, though they don’t capture the total volume of all Tweets yesterday." "Last night, Twitter averaged about 9,965 TPS from 8:11pm to 9:11pm PT, with a one-second peak of 15,107 TPS at 8:20pm PT and a one-minute peak of 874,560 TPM. Seeing a sustained peak over the course of an entire event is a change from the way people have previously turned to Twitter during live events. • Final Man vs. Machine Round of Jeopardy Unfolds; Watson Dominates

  The final round of IBM’s Watson against Ken Jenning and Brad Rutter ended last night with Watson coming out in a strong lead against its two human opponents. Read on to catch a video of the match and see just how quick Watson is on the draw. Watson tore through many of the answers, the little probability bar at the bottom of the screen denoting it was often 95%+ confident in its answers. Some of the more interesting stumbles were, like in the last matches, based on nuance. By far the biggest “What?” moment of the night, however, was when it answered the Daily Double question of “The New Yorker’s 1959 review of this said in its brevity and clarity, it is ‘unlike most such manuals, a book as well as a tool’”. • Some Nice Icon Themes for Ubuntu [on hold]

  Last night I was searching for some good looking icon themes availabe for Ubuntu, but unfortunately could not find any post which gives a list of themes :(. From yesterday night I started searching icons themes and installing one by one. So thought to share some of them hope it will help others to get a bunch of them in one post. This is a Q&A-Style tutorial which will cover: Few good icon themes which are used in famous Ubuntu type distros and are available in repository. Look and feel through pictures. How to easily install? I also request others to share their experiences of some awesome icon themes. Once themes are installed Ubuntu-Tweak will help to change and manage them, since I could not find another way to change the themes in Unity. In xfce(Xubuntu) it can be changed from Appearance. Just believe me this post will not be vast. If I'll remove pictures then it will become small, but it will not look good. Please give suggestion to make it small.

• How to manually set color of Unity Panel?

  I was just wondering if there's a way to set the color of the Unity panel manually, as opposed to having it derived from smooshing all the colors of the wallpaper together. (the launcher on the left side of the screen that comes default in Ubuntu is the Unity Panel, right? If not, please correct me on my terminology.) The reason I want this is because I have this cool wallpaper I found on DeviantArt, and I used GIMP to make Dawn, Dusk, and Midnight versions of it. Then, I set them with a transition effect, so that the lighting changes over the course of the day. Unfortunately, the Unity Panel turns a sickly sewer green at night (it could also be said to look like radioactive barf.) Either way, I don't like my launcher thingy looking like that. I'd prefer to stay away from programs that let you customise the Unity Panel (I'm fine with using sudo nano to edit system config files,) but I would if it were the only option. • Addicted to the MIX Buzz

  Well it's the Friday before MIX10, and I'm officially of no use to anybody. I'll be driving up to 'Vegas Sunday ... hopefully rolling in mid-late afternoon, checking in at my $31.50/night (including WiFi) Motel, and getting registered then hanging out around registration to see who is there. First organized thing to do is 9PM, so I'm open to suggestions Sunday evening... maybe we can get a gang together for dinner ?? Monday is the Keynote ... I'm addicted to the buzz in the ballroom the first day, hope to be close to the front, trying to live blog. Then straight to Ballroom A and stake out the spot I'll be in for all 3 days, and you all know why :) I've tagged 40 sessions that I 'want' to see, and there's only 12 slots... damn... if I could, I'd try the Multiplicity thing, but I'm afraid I'd get the idiot first try -- or maybe got that one already :) ... but at least I tagged them to make it easy to find after the videos are up. Stuff going on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday night. I'm staying over for an event on Thursday, and driving back on Friday. I'm not sure how much blogging I'll be doing, but I'll try to hit some 'Cream high spots. I'm sure everyone #NotAtMIX is going to be tuned into the sessions online. I'll be wearing TShirts with WynApse.com and SilverlightCream.com printed on the back... so if you see some old curmudgeon with such a shirt, IT'S ME!   June 15, 1992 - that was actually the day when Pearl Jam played their first concert in Serenadenhof in my hometown, Nürnberg. Oups ... that's over 20 years ago ... So I was so happy to get a ticket to this year's OOW 2012 appreciation event on Treasure Island. Every year it amazes me over and over again how the organizers manage it logistically to bring almost 40,000 people to and back from the island. Food was ... I would say fairly ok ... and beer (as always) is not - actually even though I'm not a beer drinker I wouldn't call it beer.  Kings of Leon did start. I like them a lot and owe their 2008 album Only By Night. That was a good start to warm up the crowd. And then Pearl Jam took over - and ... wooooooow ... they are such a great live band. First of all as far as I understood they were donating the money they've got for that gig to an NGO. And Eddie Vedder's voice is simply striking ... I had shivers running down my spine. They played a good excerpt of their +20 years career closing down with Alive at the very end. It seemed to everybody that the band had real fun playing there - and it was sooooo good. Thanks a lot to the person who did organize me a ticket Catching my bus back to my hotel area down at Fisherman's Wharf worked well - but I must have fallen asleep 5 minutes after we've left the parking lot. The next thing I did recognize was the bus driver pushing the breaks at Northpoint. What a wonderful night ...
