• Quick access to program shortcut

  I need to edit a text file on my computer that requires admin access (hosts). I used to do this by hitting WIN and typing "Note". The shortcut for Notepad would show up, and I could right-click and choose Run as Administrator. How do I accomplish the same thing in Windows 8? Notepad isn't something I see pinned to my start menu, and I don't really want to clutter up my menu with something I may use infrequently. I want very quick access to my programs by typing a few letters in the name. If I use WIN-R, I have to know exactly the name of the executable. I want to just type Glob and see options for Sonic Global VPN. And I want to be able to execute that found executable as an admin if I need to. Windows Vista & Windows 7 are excellent at this. Surely this functionality has not been deprecated in Windows 8...

  Is there a way to remove windows line endings on a basic windows 7 install. I'm working on a windows 7 computer with notepad and word 2010 at work. I'm trying to demo markdown without installing additional text editor, and keeping it installed locally. I've tried Word with replace on \r\n, special characters and other ways and it can't locate. Notepad same issue. Or is there a markdown converter that an online markdown converter that will handle windows line endings?

• Text Editor that hilights all instances of selection for Mac

  On Windows, I use Notepad++ which has the great feature of when I select a word, all instances of that word are also highlighted in the same document. I have found it very helpful for finding patterns in giant log files. I am wondering if there is a similar feature in a text editor on the Mac. I have looked into the documentation for TextWrangler and TextMate to no avail. Hopefully there is a way to do this so I can be more productive when working on a Mac. -- Note: in Notepad++ you do not have to do a keyboard shortcut to make this work... you just select some text and it does the highlighting for you automatically.

• Setting affinity on windows server 2003

  I have a program that by default only runs on one CPU. I have tried using the start /affinity x notepad.exe batch command but i can't get it to run my program. it changes the title of the command line window but doesn't execute the program. this start command does work for notepad so it might just be a problem with the software. I have set the affinity manually via task manager so i know it works. I am not the programmer of this software so changing that is not an option.

• Windows 7- New Windows Are Not Displayed

  I am running an up-to-date and OEM version of Windows 7. I have been experiencing an annoying problem for the past few weeks where new windows are not displayed 70-80% of the time. For example, when I launch notepad, the notepad window is not displayed or when I select save from the file menu, the save dialog is not displayed. The window is there, but it is not being displayed; the screen is not refreshed. The way to work around this problem is to force a system-wide refresh by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+DEL and then cancelling hiding all windows using "show desktop" then displaying the window needed via taskbar Can anyone please point me in the right direction to solving this problem? What could be causing this?

• Interactive mode of PSExec not working for console application

  I am trying to use PSExec to kick off a console application on a remote computer in an interactive state. When I run something like this: PsExec.exe -s -d -i 1 \\MyServer notepad.exe It launches Notepad just fine. If I then run this: PsExec.exe -s -d -i 1 \\MyServer C:\Temp\MyConsoleApp.exe It launches the command windows but doesn't do anything as far as I can tell. As in, when I run my console application locally, it displays a "heartbeat" every 5 seconds, but when I run it remotely, nothing is displayed in the command window. The .exe does show up as a process in Task Manager. Any ideas?

• Windows Server 2008 freezes when I run programs as administrator

  I am working on a machine running Windows Server 2008. Every program I have tried to run (firefox, notepad, wordpad) works fine, but if I right-click on any item on the desktop or the start menu and select "Run as Administrator" it freezes. I can move the mouse around and open/close the start menu, but the items in the start menu do not change color when the mouse hovers over them. I googled for answers for some time but had no luck. Does anyone have any ideas that I could try? (Update: I forgot to mention that the machine is virtual and I am using VMWare Workstation. In order to answer the questions below, I have been going to the same snapshot of the system each time. This lets me start the system in the exact same place each time in order to answer your questions and test.) (Update: When I run any process as administrator and it freezes, I can start task manager, but I cannot see the new process (notepad, etc...) )

• What editor/viewer to use to inspect large text based files?

  Are there any text editors/viewers (preferably on windows but other platforms are also ok) that can handle files of 500 MB or more? The editors I checked so far (Notepad++, Notepad, Eclipse) all choked on files of that size. Edit: Many thanks for the great suggestions. I tried gvim as it was the top voted and was available on Windows. I opened the file in a reasonable time. After that scrolling and searching was very smooth as long as syntax highlighting was turned off. From the other editors mentioned TextPad and EmEditor both claim to be able to handle large files very well. EmEditor seems to be built exactly for editing large files. I'll probably try both and report back.

  Very weird, i had opened notepad ++ and working on my CSS codes for my website, suddenly my little niece unplugged the computer, when i re-start the computer and opened again the same CSS codes file in notepad ++, so all i am seeing is "NULL NULL NULL NULL NULL NULL NULL" there is no codes, all lost. I opened the same CSS codes file in other editors and its all empty no codes.. is there a way to fix it, because it was my hard work. and what can be the cause? Thank you.

  Is there some program for scanning, saving and restoring last window position? For example at this moment i have opened five window first is google chrome which is not opened at full screean but at half of display, second is notepad which is on right side, and third is cmd which is under notepad. So I want to use this combination of "layout" when primary using google chrome (surfing at internet), but if working primary at other program let's say word (writting text) i want to use other program and at different position (cause is effectivly). So the point is to easy switching from one "layout" to another. (Like in many program that support more modes, for example visual studio - debug layout, - coding layout, etc ...)

Still not clear why vbscript can't interpret this assignment, but found a fix: %~1 - Expands %1 and removes any surrounding quotation marks ("").

  I have recently been introduced to the Problem Steps Recorder on Windows 7. It's great. Trouble is, it does not recorder keyboard input. When I look at the output of a recording all I see it User keyboard input in "Untitled - Notepad" [... Backspace Backspace Backspace Backspace Backspace ...] So I know the user typed SOMETHING and then deleted five characters. Is there a way to get the PSR to record what was inputted? Or is that a security issue? This isn't a big deal for notepad, but for custom apps it would be nice to know exactly what a user typed into a text box.

  I am writing an Excel 2007 Addin. using VS2008 and .net 3.5, C#. I catched Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Application's WindowActivate and WindowDeActivate events. It was surprised to know that WindowActivate and Deactivate only triggers when i switch between two Excel Windows. if i switch to notepad, i expect Deactivate to be triggered, but its not happening. same way from notepad if i switch to excel window, i expect Activate to be triggered but its not happening. It looks like the behaviour indicates windows are MDI-Child windows. Now what i want to do is get HWnd of Excel's Mainwindow and hook Window Activate and Deactivates using dllimport features.   Hi, I have been working in Oracle iStore from past 4 months and i have been managing the application without any IDE (basically doing all the chores on notepad only because application has been designed poorly and no IDE can support it). Since the coding is done on simple notepad files it is very hard to find out the bugs in the application. I am facing a problem that i have not idea which jsp page redirect the control to which jsp page. For instance, there are two jsp pages A.jsp and other is B.jsp. Now the browser is currently displaying A.jsp. When the user click on submit button (available on A.jsp) the form submits and redirects the control to B.jsp. Now my problem is that i know i am coming on B.jsp but, i don't know that A.jsp is redirecting the control to B.jsp. Is there an method available in Servlet API which tells Which jsp is redirecting the control to B.jsp?   I need a light css editor with certain functions. Already downloaded and tried a few apps but still no luck, none of them fit my requirements. Actually, there is one, CssEdit (or TextMate), but unfortunately i'm a windows user... Already tried: built-in NetBeans IDE css editor (btw nice editor, the one i'm using now for css) IntelJ IDE (very good html and css editor, but using the entire ide just for this - that's crazy) ArduoCss (very buggy in win7 environment) Notepad Notepad++ (it rules, but as i said, i need something more functional for css editing) Style Master ( if i don't find anything else, probably i'll choose this one) Stylizer ( also might be my choice, but it's black interface kills me, also extremy noob-oriented, i even couldn't find a way to see the source code) Some of the features i am looking for: grouping by comments like here snippets autocomplete, if i type for instance f-s, it should recognize and expand it to "font-size" property color picker The editor must have at least the first feature that i listed above.   I am doing a software for a document system. In this system when a user completes a document and want to save it, the document will be uploaded directly to server without the user action. This system uses COM/ActiveX to facilitate user using native editors. Ok, my problem is: suppose I have a file say d:/notepad.txt. Using classical method a user can browse the file and upload it. I can do that with apache commonio and GWT FormPanel and FileUpload. But if I know the filename (d:/notepad.txt), is there any way to upload the file directly to server without the user having to browse the file. I am currently doing this by the ActiveX componenet calling some HttpUpload methods with POST. But that does not maintain session. Thanks

  I'm looking for a Windows text editor for programming that handles EOL whitespace CORRECTLY, which for my idea of correct means: Strip all EOL whitespace on save, EXCEPT on lines that I haven't edited. This is to minimise the amount of EOL whitespace evil in my world, but not pollute SCM diff/blame with whitespace-only fixes (I have to deal with old / other people's code). I have played with TextPad, Notepad++, Kodomo Edit and Programmer's Notepad 2, and found all of them lacking. Also: I don't get along with vi, and I am unsure about Emacs on Windows. @Matti Virkkunen: I could mess with diff, but I want to fix the problem, not the symptoms. Fixing diff means all my, others, and server side diff tools need to be fixed, and doesn't fix space/noise/hash change issues in SCM. Example pet hate using that system: "update" tells me a file has changed. Diff shows no changes.
