  • Gnome-shell worskpace preview on dual screen

    I'have isntalled gnome3 and I have dual screens(laptop, monitor). Is it possible to see the other monitor in workspace preview in the gnome panel??? I only can see primary monitor, that's why i'm not able to move windows inside the second screen? I've tried to change some settings in dconf , but with no luck.   • Moving from root to www

    I've read tons of questions but I can't find the answer to this seemingly obvious issue. I'm moving my WordPress site from domain.com to www.domain.com so that I can use CloudFlare. I did the change in WP and everything works fine, with domain.com redirecting correctly. Do I need to add the www site in GWT (and remove domain.com) or will it keep tracking the website correctly thanks to the redirections?

  • Correct permissions for /var/www and wordpress

    Hello and thank you in advance! I am relatively new to ubuntu, so please excuse the newbie-ness of this question... I have set up a LAMP server (ubuntu server 11.10) and I have access via SSH and to the "it works" page from a web browser from inside my network (via ip address) and from outside using dyndns. I have a couple of projects in development with some outside developers and I want to use this server as a development server for testing and for client approvals. We have some Wordpress projects that sit in subdirectories in /var/www/wordpress1 /var/www/wordpress2, etc. I cannot access these sub directories from a browser in order to set up WP--or (I assume) to see the content on a browser. I get a 403 Forbidden error on my browser. I assume that this is a permissions problem. Can you please tell me the proper settings for the permissions to: 1) Allow the developers and me to read/write. 2) to allow WP set up and do its thing 3) Allow visitors to access the site(s) via the web. I should also mention that the subfolder are actually simlinks to folder on another internal hdd--I don't think this will make a difference, but I thought I should disclose. Since I am a newbie to ubuntu, step-by-step directions are greatly appreciated!   • Wordpress Directory Permission to allow uploads, plugin folders, etc

    I have a wordpress pre-made site which were developed on my localmachine, and i uploaded it too a vps running on debian6, using nginx, mysql, php. Following this guide: 1) Create an unprivilaged user, this could be say 'karl' or whatever, and make them belong to the www-data group. So that if I were to login as karl and create a web root in say /home/karl/www/ , all the files will be owned by karl:www-data 2) Set up nginx as the user www-data in nginx.conf 3) Set up PHP-FPM to run as www-data 4) Place your files in /home/karl/www/[domain name maybe]/public_html/, upload as 'karl' so you don't have to chown everything again. when i type ls -l inside public_html/ it shows that all the files inside are owned by karl:karl. But the public_html directory is owned by karl:www-data. I chmod 0755 the folder wp-content but i still get the error: ERROR: Path ../wp-content/connection_images does not seem to be writeable. I know i shouldn't set it too 777 due to security reason, how should i set it too proper permission? and what should i set also to allow my users to upload,write posts,edit articles?   • Adding a GET parameter to URL causes 404 error

    I'm trying to install the syntaxhighlightter evolved plugin to my wordpress blog. I've uploaded and activated the plugin, but it did not work. I've looked into the page source code and found out that the plugin style is loaded from the following URL: http://devermind.com/wp-content/plugins/syntaxhighlighter/syntaxhighlighter/styles/shCore.css?ver=2.0.320 This causes a 404 error (page not found). The strange thing though is that when I remove the GET parameters, the CSS loads ok: http://devermind.com/wp-content/plugins/syntaxhighlighter/syntaxhighlighter/styles/shCore.css What could be causing this problem and how can I fix this? Unfortunately I don't know how to make wordpress drop the GET parameters when loading the stylesheet. EDIT: As I just found out, this happens only in Firefox (3.0.11). IE loads both URLs above just fine. Not that this would be of any help though, so any suggestions would be appreciated. SECOND EDIT: I tried this on my laptop and it works fine with Firefox 3.08. So this really seems to be a browser problem after all.

  • Ubuntu server crashes; need help figuring how to figure out why

    I have a 768 Slice at slicehost.com running Ubuntu Server 8.04.2 LTS (hardy) with a LAMP stack on it that periodically crashes, though why I am not sure. From what I can tell, there is a process that basically goes rogue and consumes all the memory on the slice, suffocating all the other programs running until the whole thing comes to a grinding halt, and I have to do a hard reboot of the slice to get it back up and running again. I can't detect any pattern for this (it seems to happen about once a month, more or less). Here's a screenshot of my console during the last crash: I would assume that a possible cause might a PHP script or an apache configuration rule that might cause the crash if triggered? How would I be able to find out which one is the offending one? I've checked and rechecked all my PHP scripts, and running them doesn't seem to trigger the crash. I've also been able to log on to my system during a crash and see what's running (with top), but I can't tell how the offending process was started, so I can't trace the root of the problem! I know my description is overly generic, but unfortunately my expertise in tracking down the source of these glitches is very limited. If you need any additional information about my system in order to help me figure this out, please let me know in the comments, and I will append it to the question. My only other lead as to the culprit here is Wordpress, which we have installed on this server.   • Google bots are severely affecting site performance

    I have an aggregate site on a linux server that pulls in feeds from a universe of about 2,000 blogs. It's in Wordpress 3.4.2 and I have a cron job that is staggered to run five times an hour on another server to pull in the stories and then publish them to the front page of this site. This is so I didn't put too much pressure all on one server. However, the Google bots, which visit a few times every hour bring the server to its knees in the morning and evenings when there is an increase in traffic on the site. The bots have something like 30,000 links to follow at this point. How do I throttle the bots to simply grab the new stories off the front page and stop there? EDIT- Details of my server configuration: The way we have this set up is the server that handles all the publishing is an unmanaged instance via AWS. It mounts the NFS server and connects to the RDS to update content, etc. You get to this publishing instance via a plugin that detects the wp-admin link and then redirects you into there. The front end app server also mounts the NFS and requests data from the RDS. It is the only one that has the WP Super Cache on it.... The OS is Ubuntu on the App server and the NFS runs CentOs. The front end is Nginx and the publishing server is Apache.

  • MySQL Not Turning On

    I have an amazon ec2 instance running on the Amazon Linux AMI and its a micro instance. I wanted to install Django onto my server so I entered these commands wget http://www.mlsite.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/go wget http://www.mlsite.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/django.conf chmod 744 go ./go So after I was done, I ran sudo service httpd restart and sudo service mysqld restart and This is what came up for mysqld: Stopping mysqld: [ OK ] MySQL Daemon failed to start. Starting mysqld: [FAILED] So I deleted the django files /usr/local/python2.6.8/site-packages/django_registration.egg and I tried finding the error and I found out that in my /etc/my.cnf for the socket, it said socket=/var/lock/subsys/mysql.sock so I went to /var/lock/subsys/ and there was no mysql.sock. I tried creating one using vim but it still didn't work. Then I checked the error log and it said Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) So I am pretty much lost right now. I know it has something to do with mysql.sock If you might know a reason why this was caused could you please let me know? I have a wordpress site on my server, so i kind of need MySQL to work.     I have a virtuoso sparql endpoint installed, which I want to make available through a hostname (e.g. www.virtuosoexample.com). The thing with virtuoso is that the is no Document root. The endpoint is initiated by the daemon and made available through a source port (e.g. localhost:1234/) I know how to set a virtual host pointing to a document root, but i don't know how to do this for a server with a port number. Any advice would be appreciated. Below is the code, how I would do it with a document root.   • Nginx + WordPress + HHVM: Why isn't Batcache working? Would Varnish help even more?

    I've heard great things about HHVM, so I've setup a copy of WordPress blog (on another domain) with Nginx (with the Pagespeed module) and HHVM. Right now the benefits are obvious: on the same config, load times are between two and three times faster. I'm trying to speed up things a little bit, and I've also installed Memcached and Batcache. I've installed the memcached package, copied object-cache.php (Pastebin) onto the root folder of the WordPress blog, and after that I've installed the Batcache plugin and copied the advanced-cache.php (Pastebin) file onto the wp-content folder. Also, I've included the line define('WP_CACHE', true); in the wp-config.php file. It seems it doesn't work, though. If I quickly reload the page several times Batcache should show the cached page, but it doesn't. It's easy to check that by reloading (Cmd+R on Chrome on OS X) the page several times and then viewing the page's code. Under the <head> section I should see some batcache stats, but they aren't there. I wonder if someone could give me some hint on this. On a side note, I don't know if I could add some other component in order to help the performance be even better. I'm thing about Varnish, but I'm not sure if it's just useless and it's just another way to the same I'm currently doing. Any other component there? (I'll test CDN for images, minifying js, etc and some other tricks as well, but I'm talking from the server perspective).

    Everything is pretty standard from WP samples, with minor modifications. But when a comment is submitted, it does not show the "your comment is awaiting moderation" message. There are a variety of tools available to help you and Support diagnose SOA Suite issues in 11g but it can be confusing as to which tool is appropriate for a particular situation and what their relationships are. This blog post will introduce the various tools and attempt to clarify what each is for and how they are related. Let's first list the tools we'll be addressing: RDA: Remote Diagnostic Agent DFW: Diagnostic Framework Selective Tracing DMS: Dynamic Monitoring Service ODL: Oracle Diagnostic Logging ADR: Automatic Diagnostics Repository ADRCI: Automatic Diagnostics Repository Command Interpreter WLDF: WebLogic Diagnostic Framework This overview is not mean to be a comprehensive guide on using all of these tools, however, extensive reference materials are included that will provide many more details on their execution. Another point to note is that all of these tools are applicable for Fusion Middleware as a whole but specific products may or may not have implemented features to leverage them. A couple of the tools have a WebLogic Scripting Tool or 'WLST' interface. WLST is a command interface for executing pre-built functions and custom scripts against a domain.   • Unable to list contents/remove directory (linux ext3)

    System is CentOS5 x86_64, completely up to date. I've got a folder that can't be listed (ls just hangs, eating memory until it is killed). The directory size is nearly 500k: root@server [/home/user/public_html/domain.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03]# stat . File: `.' Size: 458752 Blocks: 904 IO Block: 4096 directory Device: 812h/2066d Inode: 44499071 Links: 2 Access: (0755/drwxr-xr-x) Uid: ( 3292/ user) Gid: ( 3287/ user) Access: 2012-06-29 17:31:47.000000000 -0400 Modify: 2012-10-23 14:41:58.000000000 -0400 Change: 2012-10-23 14:41:58.000000000 -0400 I can see the file names if I use ls -1f, but it just repeats the same 48 files ad infinitum, all of which have non-ascii characters somewhere in the file name: La-critic\363-al-servicio-la-privacidad-300x160.jpg When I try to access the files (say to copy them or remove them) I get messages like the following: lstat("/home/user/public_html/domain.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Sebast\355an-Pi\361era-el-balc\363n-150x120.jpg", 0x7fff364c52c0) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) I tried altering the code found on this man page and modified the code to call unlink for each file. I get the same ENOENT error from the unlink call: unlink("/home/user/public_html/domain.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Marca-naci\363n-Madrid-150x120.jpg") = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) I also straced a "touch", grabbed the syscalls it makes and replicated them, then tried to unlink the resulting file by name. This works fine, but the folder still contains an entry by the same name after the operation completes and the program runs for an arbitrarily long time (strace output ended up at 20GB after 5 minutes and I stopped the process). I'm stumped on this one, I'd really prefer not to have to take this production machine (hundreds of customers) offline to fsck the filesystem, but I'm leaning toward that being the only option at this point. If anyone's had success using other methods for removing files (by inode number, I can get those with the getdents code) I'd love to hear them. (Yes, I've tried find . -inum <inode> -exec rm -fv {} \; and it still has the problem with unlink returning ENOENT) For those interested, here's the diff between that man page's code and mine.
