  • Maintaining Revision Levels

    A question that came up on an earlier blog post was how to limit the number of revisions on a piece of content. UCM does not inherently enforce any sort of limit on how many revisions you can have. It's unlimited. In some cases, there may be content that goes through lots of changes, but there just simply isn't a need to keep all of its revisions around. Deleting those revisions through the content information screen can be very cumbersome. And going through the Repository Manager applet can take time as well to filter and find the revisions to get rid of. But there is an easier way through the Archiver. The Export Query criteria in Archiver includes a very handy field called 'Revision Rank'. With revision labels, they typically go up as new revisions come in (e.g. 1, 2, 3, 4, etc...). But you can't really use this field to tell it to keep the top 5 revisions. Those top 5 revision numbers are always going up. But revision rank goes the opposite direction. The very latest revision is always 0. The previous revision to that is 1. Previous revision to that is 2. And so on and so forth. With revision rank, you can set your query to look for any Revision Rank greater or equal to 5. Now as older revisions move down the line, their revision rank gets higher and higher until they reach that threshold. Then when you run that archive export, you can choose to delete and remove those revisions. Running that export in Archiver is normally a manual process. But with Idc Command, you can script the process and have it run automatically from the server. Idc Command is a utility that allows you to run any of the content server services via the command line. You basically feed it a text file with the services and parameters defined along with the user to run it as. The Idc Command executable is located within the \bin\ directory: $ ./IdcCommand -f DeleteOlderRevisions.txt -u sysadmin -l delete_revisions.log In this example, our IdcCommand file to run the export and do the deletions would look like: IdcService=EXPORT_ARCHIVE aArchiveName=DeleteOlderRevisions aDoDelete=1 IDC_Name=idc dataSource=RevisionIDs <<EOD>> You can then use automated scheduling routines in the OS to run the command and command file at the frequency needed. Remember that you are deleting the revisions from within UCM, but they are still getting placed within the archive. So you will need to delete those batches to have them fully removed (or re-import if you need to recover them).   • Launch an arbitrary application with a specific icon

    I'm thinking about customizing my Windows 7's application icons, so that they all follow a specific theme (Token-like icons). This would involve using Resource Hacker (or similar) to patch each .exe. Not only this would be tiresome, but also it would require doing it again at each update of each application (nevermind that some could break just because it was tampered with). Instead, is there any way to launch an application with a specific icon? Ideally it would be something from the command-line (so I can make a shortcut), like this: launchwithicon.exe --app C:\myapp.exe --icon C:\myicon.ico Note that while it is possible to do something similar by setting the taskbar to "always combine, hide labels", I do not like this approach and instead am looking for something that works without combining the taskbar icons.

Some of the questions we see are quite abstract. Customers simply want to get a grip on understanding how they approach a migration. Others want to know if a particular architecture is viable. I was looking into all the available methodology's and I was wondering, from all methodologies, are there any that have provided the foundations for the others? For an example, looking at the following methodologies: Agile, Prototyping, Cleanroom, Iterative, RAD, RUP, Spiral, Waterfall, XP, Lean, Scrum, V-Model, TDD. Can we say that: Prototyping, Iterative, Spiral and Waterfall are the "foundation" for the others? Or is there no such thing as "foundations" and does each methodology has it's own unique history? I would ofcourse like to describe all the methodology's in my research paper, but I simply don't have the time to do so and that is why I would like to know which methodologies can be seen as representatives.

    Bugs usually receive a descriptive name: "That X-Y synchronization issue", "That crash after actions A, B and D but not C", "Yesterday's update problem". Even the JIRA issue tracker has a field "Summary" instead of "Name". In discussing "big" bugs, I actually use JIRA id's to prevent confusion. There's a few restrictions to take into account: When reporting a bug, only the consequence of a bug is known. The root cause might never even be found. Several reported bugs might be found out to be duplicates, or might be completely different consequences of the same bug. In large projects, bugs will come at you by the dozens every month. Now, how would you name a bug? Name them like hurricanes perhaps?

    Last night's annual Oracle Retail Week Awards saw the UK's top retailers come together to celebrate the very best of our industry over the last year.  The Grosvenor House Hotel on Park Lane in London was the setting for an exciting ceremony which this year marked several significant milestones in British - and global - retail.  Check out our videos about the event at our Oracle Retail YouTube channel, and see if you were snapped by our photographer on our Oracle Retail Facebook page. There were some extremely hot contests for many of this year's awards - and all very deserving winners.  The entries have demonstrated beyond doubt that retailers have striven to push their standards up yet again in all areas over the past year.  The judging panel includes some of the most prestigious names in the retail industry - to impress the panel enough to win an award is a substantial achievement.  This year the panel included the likes of Andy Clarke - Chief Executive of ASDA Group; Mark Newton Jones - CEO of Shop Direct Group; Richard Pennycook - the finance director at Morrisons; Rob Templeman - Chief Executive of Debenhams; and Stephen Sunnucks - the president of Gap Europe.  These are retail veterans  who have each helped to shape the British High Street over the last decade.  It was great to chat with many of them in the Oracle VIP area last night.  For me, last night's highlight was honouring both Sir Stuart Rose and Sir Terry Leahy for their contributions to the retail industry.  Both have set the standards in retailing over the last twenty years and taken their respective businesses from strength to strength, demonstrating that there is always a need for innovation even in larger businesses, and that a business has to adapt quickly to new technology in order to stay competitive.  Sir Terry Leahy's retirement this year marks the end of an era of global expansion for the Tesco group and a milestone in the progression of British retail.  Sir Terry has helped steer Tesco through nearly 20 years of change, with 14 years as Chief Executive.  During this time he led the drive for international expansion and an aggressive campaign to increase market share.  He has led the way for High Street retailers in adapting to the rise of internet retailing and nurtured a very successful home delivery service.  More recently he has pioneered the notion of cross-channel retailing with the introduction of Tesco apps for the iPhone and Android mobile phones allowing customers to scan barcodes of items to add to a shopping list which they can then either refer to in store or order for delivery.  John Lewis Partnership was a very deserving winner of The Oracle Retailer of the Year award for their overall dedication to excellent retailing practices.  The business was also named the American Express Marketing/Advertising Campaign of the Year award for their memorable 'Never Knowingly Undersold' advert series, which included a very successful viral video and radio campaign with Fyfe Dangerfield's cover of Billy Joel's 'She's Always a Woman' used for the adverts.  Store Design of the Year was another exciting category with Topshop taking the accolade for its flagship Oxford Street store in London, which combines boutique concession-style stalls with high fashion displays and exclusive collections from leading designers.  The store even has its own hairdressers and food hall, making it a truly all-inclusive fashion retail experience and a global landmark for any self-respecting international fashion shopper. Over the next few weeks we'll be exploring some of the winning entries in more detail here on the blog, so keep an eye out for some unique insights into how the winning retailers have made such remarkable achievements.

    i tried to make bootable a flash drive from the startup disk creator, and i wanted to copy an iso of the 11.10 ubuntu, and when i tried to erase the flash drive i pressed erase on another removable drive 1T storage by mistake, VVVery very very quickly less than one second and with no warning everything was erased i suppose.Is that thing possible?When i tried before theis to erase the flash drive it took around a minute to erase the 8GB.But now less than a second for 1T? Please help, Gabriel

    Andei fazendo uns testes no AJAX Control Toolkit 4 que deverá ser usado com o ASP.NET 4 no Visual Studio .NET 2010 e confesso que gostei muito. Notei que há diversos controles novos e um que me chamou a atenção foi o de Upload assíncrono para controlar os uploads de arquivos para o server. Vale a pena estudar um pouco estas novidades. Para quem já usava o AJAX no ASP.NET 3.5, a idéia do Toolkit é igual, exceto a adição de novos controles. Com o AJAX vc pode mudar todo o comportamento da sua aplicação WEB, requisições no server passam a ser menos frequentes, o layout ajuda e muito com os controles do AJAX. Nativamente no VS 2010 já há o AJAX que a MS suporta nativamente (ScriptManager, UpdatePanel, UpdateProgress, etc), mas vale a pena implementar alguns controles do Toolkit. Bons estudos!

    I have installed AdobeAIR on 13.10, but am getting the following error messages when using: Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "overlay-scrollbar" Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "unity-gtk-module" Has someone faced this issue. I looked at comment giving a possible resolution here , but that didn't help, as I already have those packages installed. Basically to install AdobeAIR, being a 32-bit, I had to install various i386 packages: libgtk2.0-0:i386 libnss3-1d:i386 libnspr4-0d:i386 lib32nss-mdns libxml2:i386 libxslt1.1:i386 When I run the program as root, it opens up properly without errors. But that is not an option. Could it be a problem that necessary modules are not getting loaded on non-root user's environment.

    Background info I am trying to install Veins simulation environment by following the tutorial provided by the author. In step 1 it is required to install some packages in Linux, the tutorial suggest this commands to be executed on Terminal: sudo apt-get install build-essential gcc g++ bison flex perl tcl-dev tk-dev blt libxml2-dev zlib1g-dev default-jre doxygen graphviz libwebkitgtk-1.0-0 openmpi-bin libopenmpi-dev libpcap-dev autoconf automake libtool libxerces-c2-dev proj libgdal1-dev libfox-1.6-dev When I execute this command, I immediately get: E: Package 'proj' has no installation candidate Then I remove the proj from the command and execute it again without proj in it, next I get: The following packages have unmet dependencies: libgdal1-dev : Depends: libgdal-dev but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. So, I remove libgdal1-dev from the command as well. And it executes file, by downloading the remaining packages. To troubleshoot the problem with proj and libdgal1-dev I go to the Synaptic Package Manager. libgdal1-dev I search for libgdal1-dev in Synaptic Package Manager and I get an entry. I Mark for Installation and then Synaptic Package Manager suggests removing libxerces-c2-dev which is actually added via the initial command. Should I trust Synaptic Package Manager with this suggestion, and proceed further? proj What should I do about proj. There are some packages in Synaptic Package Manager such as proj-bin or libproj-dev. Should I install them? I think proj has to do with this and this What should I do to make sure that this simulation tool works fine?

  • Increase application performance on Amazon AWS

    I've got a client with an MVC v1 (.NET) application running on a micro instance. On this instance, I've got .NET, IIS 7.5, and MS SQL Server 2008 running to handle the application. The client has reported that it is taking nearly 10 seconds to process each request. Even loading the initial login page takes about that long, then logging in takes that long, etc etc. The currently running instance specs are as follows: 615 MB RAM Intel Xenon CPU E5430 @ 2.66GHz 2.78 GHz 64-Bit Is the memory availability the issue? or is it the processing power? I forsee two options: Change to a larget instance Set up a 2-tier architecture with two micro instances Which of these will give the application better performance? Thanks in advance.

  • What, if anything, to do about bow-shaped burndowns?

    I've started to notice a recurring pattern to our team's burndown charts, which I call a "bowstring" pattern. The ideal line is the "string" and the actual line starts out relatively flat, then curves down to meet the target like a bow. My theory on why they look like this is that toward the beginning of the story, we are doing a lot of debugging or exploratory work that is difficult to estimate remaining work for. Sometimes it even goes up a little as we discover a task is more difficult once we get into it. Then we get into implementation and test which is more predictable, hence the curving down graph. Note I'm not talking about a big scale like BDUF, just the natural short-term constraint that you have to find the bug before you can fix it, coupled with the fact that stories are most likely to start toward the beginning of a two-week iteration. Is this a common occurrence among scrum teams? Do people see it as a problem? If so, what is the root cause and some techniques to deal with it?

  • Most pain-free time registration software for developers ?

    I work as a consultant in a medium-sized firm. We need to keep track of time spent on individual tasks and which customers to bill to. Our current system for doing this is an old in-house system, that needs to be retired for various reasons. Most developers don't like registering time, so I am looking for the best tool for this job, that minimizes the time needed to register time. Must have features: Must be simple and easy to use. Must have reporting feature to use for billing. Must have an API, so we can integrate in-house tools. Registering time should be based on hours worked (ie. today, worked on Customer A, Task B from 8 AM to 12 AM). TFS integration is a plus, but not needed (ie. register time on a work item) May be open source or a paid product; doesn't really matter. What would you recommend ?

  • How to convince boss to buy Visual Studio 2012 Professional

    The main advantage is the use of ReSharper and other add-ons but we need to make a convincing argument for the purchase of Visual Studio 2012 Professional. We are currently using Visual Studio 2012 Express for Windows. It is quite good but is hard to switch from using the full Professional version in the past. So far the team has compiled the following list: Extract Interface function missing. Very useful for clean SOLID code. No add-on support. Can’t install StyleCop or productivity tools. AnkhSvn, Spell checker, Productivity PowerTools, GhostDoc, Regex Editor, PowerCommands. The exception assistant is limited in Express edition. This is a big annoyance. Possibility of create a Test project based on source code. We do server development in C# so any web add-ons or anything else is useless.
