  • Right programing language for developing application for Mac

    - by drasto
I'm planing to buy Mac. I would like to be able to develop GUI aplication for Mac as well. Currently I develop in C# using VisualStudio as IDE. I also know Java and I'm familiar with NetBeans IDE. Application created in both of this languages can run on Mac (as can NetBeans IDE) but I was told that neither C# nor Java is recomended for MacOS X development. So what language is recomended for MacOS X development ? I guess there is some recomodation from Apple for the developers ? I would prefer Object-oriented easy-to-use programing language (nothing like C) with good IDE that supports GUI creating (GUI designer). Thank you for answers

  • Start developing for macosx

    - by Stefano Borini
hello, I would like to start developing for macosx. I need to create a small native application to help me do some stuff. I never developed in Objective-C, have no idea about cocoa, Xcode, NIB and similar stuff. I don't want to learn by slapping examples together though. This would probably make things done, but I would not learn anything. I'd prefer a guided tutorial (or book) to go from zero to release on the web of the application. Do you have anything to suggest ?

  • Sharing Eclipse directory on Dropbox between Windows and Mac OS X

    - by sowbug
This question was close to mine, but not quite. I have a Windows desktop and a MacBook Pro. I'd like to be able to keep my Eclipse workspace in my Dropbox folder. The problem is that many project settings change between platforms: references to JREs, JDKs, and other libs. Every discussion I've seen of this problem seems to suggest taking advantage of the source control system's ignore functionality, so that such-and-such file remains local-only and thus able to remain platform-specific. But when you're working with a real single shared folder, that class of solution doesn't apply. Have you had luck working with a Java Eclipse project living in a single folder shared over the network, cross-platform?

  • Getting the size of an opening window in WebKit

    - by ThereSkippy
Hi, I'm implementing a "WebKit Browser In An Application" which basically embeds WebViews in Qt widgets (we're using the WebKit browser instead of Qt's since it's stabler and more up-to-date). So far everything's great, until someone clicks on a link which invokes a Javascript "Window.open" function with a custom width and height for the new window. I've set the various delegates for the parent window: setFrameLoadDelegate, setResourceLoadDelegate, setPolicyDelegate, and setUIDelegate. I am getting a createWebViewWithRequest in the UI delegate as expected when the window opens (with a null request, as others have noted). I then get a decidePolicyForNavigationAction for the new window, but it doesn't have the proposed window's width or height. I NEVER get a decidePolicyForNewWindowAction for JavaScript window.open (also noted by others). So I'm at a loss. Is there a way to get this information so I can set the Qt Widget's size correctly?

  • How to use NSWindowDidExposeNotification

    - by Jeena
Hi, I am trying to update another windows when the one becomes visible. So I found the NSWindowDidExposeNotification and tried to work with it, so I wrote in my awakeFromNib: // MyClass.m - (void)awakeFromNib { NSNotificationCenter *nc = [NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter]; [nc addObserver:self selector:@selector(mentionsWindowDidExpose:) name:NSWindowDidExposeNotification object:nil]; } and implemented the method // MyClass.h - (void)mentionsWindowDidExpose:(id)sender; // MyClass.m - (void)mentionsWindowDidExpose:(id)sender { NSLog(@"test"); } But it never gets called which is odd. What do I do wrong here?

  • Creating NSApp inside another nsviewcontroller

    - by DesperateLearner
I have opened my mac app in a new nsviewcontroller - (void)applicationDidFinishLaunching:(NSNotification *)aNotification { self.masterViewController = [[MasterViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"MasterViewController" bundle:nil]; [self.window.contentView addSubview:self.masterViewController.view]; self.masterViewController.view.frame = ((NSView*)self.window.contentView).bounds; } Masterviewcontroller has a customized view in the .xib file. When I need to create an NSApp sheet in this NSViewController for another, I'm calling [NSApp beginSheet:_newDataWindow modalForWindow:window modalDelegate:self didEndSelector:nil contextInfo:nil]; I have to use 'window' for beginSheetModalForWindow. But how do I call it from another NSViewController. I end up with compilation error.

  • Adobe After Efects Plugin With Cocoa (Overriding malloc)

    - by mustISignUp
Messing about a bit, i have a working Adobe After Effects plugin with a bit of Obj-c / Cocoa in it (NSArray and custom objects - not ui stuff). The SDK guide states:- Always use After Effects memory allocation functions. In low-memory conditions (such as during RAM preview), it’s very important that plug-ins not compete with After Effects for OS memory, and deal gracefully with out-of-memory conditions. Failing to use our functions can cause lock-ups, crashes, and tech support calls. Don’t do that. If you’re wrapping existing C++ code, overloading new and delete to use our functions will save substantial reimplementation. On Windows, derive all classes from a common base class which implements new and delete. so my question.. is something compatible with the above statement possible in Obj-c?

  • How can I get the domain name for a user logged into a Mac via Active Directory

    - by Lawrence Johnston
In my Cocoa app how can I get the current user's domain when they're logged in via Active Directory? I need to determine two things: 1. If the current user is logged on to an Active Directory domain (only need to handle Active Directory). 2. If 1, the domain of the user. I've found references to Directory Services and the Open Directory Programming Guide but the latter is 10.6 only (I must support 10.5+) and I could not find any examples for the former that gave me an idea of what I needed to do.

  • What's the difference between starting a process from the dock vs. the command line on OS X

    - by Josh Knauer
I'm debugging an issue on OS X that only occurs when the application is started from the dock. It does not happen when the app is started from the command line. What is the difference between the two scenarios? The code I'm working with is a c++ based bundled plug-in being loaded in a third party app. I've attached to the process with GDB in both scenarios and the only difference I can see is that a couple of extra dylibs are loaded in the process when running from the command line and that the base address of my library is slightly different in the two scenarios. I've tried changing my linkage to i-prebind and/or -bind_at_load to no avail.

  • Multiple Apps Possible via Launch Services, want to Specify Particular One

    - by Andrew
Here's the issue: I have a list of App names that I want to launch. They do not include a path (e.g. {"VLC","Microsoft Word"}. I have two different copies of VLC in different directories. I would like Launch Services to ONLY open the one from /Applications/ and not EVER launch from /Applications/AnotherDirectory I want to get the path of these, and test to see what Launch Services wants to launch (via bash with "open" or applescript via "tell _ to launch" or [NSWorkspace launch...]) The only way that I have come up with to test the path of a file about to be launched by launch services is: Applescript: tell application "Finder" to return the (posix path of (path to application "VLC" as alias)) That works fine, but launches the app (which I don't want at all). Suggestions?

  • Strange Puzzle - Invalid memory access of location

    - by Rob Graeber
    The error message I'm getting consistently is: Invalid memory access of location 0x8 rip=0x10cf4ab28 What I'm doing is making a basic stock backtesting system, that is iterating huge arrays of stocks/historical data across various algorithms, using java + eclipse on the latest Mac Os X. I tracked down the code that seems to be causing it. A method that is used to get the massive arrays of data and is called thousands of times. Nothing is retained so I don't think there is a memory leak. However there seems to be a set limit of around 7000 times I can iterate over it before I get the memory error. The weird thing is that it works perfectly in debug mode. Does anyone know what debug mode does differently in Eclipse? Giving the jvm more memory doesn't help, and it appears to work fine using -xint. And again it works perfectly in debug mode. public static List<Stock> getStockArray(ExchangeType e){ List<Stock> stockArray = new ArrayList<Stock>(); if(e == ExchangeType.ALL){ stockArray.addAll(getStockArray(ExchangeType.NYSE)); stockArray.addAll(getStockArray(ExchangeType.NASDAQ)); }else if(e == ExchangeType.ETF){ stockArray.addAll(etfStockArray); }else if(e == ExchangeType.NYSE){ stockArray.addAll(nyseStockArray); }else if(e == ExchangeType.NASDAQ){ stockArray.addAll(nasdaqStockArray); } return stockArray; } A simple loop like this, iterated over 1000s of times, will cause the memory error. But not in debug mode. for (Stock stock : StockDatabase.getStockArray(ExchangeType.ETF)) { System.out.println(stock.symbol); }

  • How can I gain root access on a Mac OS X system without wiping the OS?

    - by Richard T
My father died recently and I've inherited his Mac. I'd love to put it to use in my own life, but I don't want to wipe its brains out just so I can reconfigure it to use in my network, etc. His old files are historically important to me—I trust you can understand my desire to keep them. I can log in as I had an account on the machine before he passed, but that's about it.

  • How to launch a dependent application on OS X?

    - by jldupont
What is the programmatical mechanism by which an application can be launched at a result of another one being launched? E.g. upon launching iTunes, the Last.fm desktop launches too. Or it is just a question of substituting a "batch file" of some sort? Note: OS X newbie.

  • View OS X Desktop on windows remotely at higher resolution then hosting machine

    - by Elijha
I have a new macbook air 11, which I do some web based programming on, I have a windows box with a 1920x1200 display which I'd like to use to view the mac desktop and keep working at home when I can - taking advantage of the higher resolution screen and full sized keyboard/mouse. I don't think VNC or such is the answer I'm looking for as it would restrict the display to the airs 1366x768 - negating the main benefit more lines of text on screen. From some rudimentary googleing I think I'm after some sort of x-windows / x-11 remote display. But I'm not a Linux user and any discussion seems to be about linux os x or windows Linux setups. Can anyone provide a clear set of instructions on how to do this or an application that can do this.

  • Can a method return an NSRange?

    - by Dan Donaldson
I have a method that returns an NSRange. When I call this method from outside the class I get a compile error. NSRange tmpRange; tmpRange = [phrase rangeInString:searchString forString:theLetter goingForward:YES]; return tmpRange.location == -1; in the .h file: #import <Foundation/Foundation.h> @interface Phrase : NSObject { } - (NSRange) rangeInString:(NSString *) tgt forString:(NSString *) find goingForward:(BOOL) fwd; @end This method is called within the Phrase object by other methods without problems. The compiler says 'incompatible types in assignment'. Can anyone explain this to me? I assume it has to do with returning an NSRange/struct type value generated outside the object, but I don't know why it works in one place and not the other.

  • xcode 4 creating a 2d grid (range and domain)

    - by user1706978
    I'm learning how to program c and i'm trying to make a program the finds the range (using an equation with x as the domain) of a 2d grid...ive already attempted it, but it's giving me all these errors on Xcode, any help?(As you can see, I'm quite stuck!) #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> float domain; float domain = 2.0; float domainsol(float x ) { domain = x; float func = 1.25 * x + 5.0; return func; } int main(int argc, const char * argv[]) { }

  • Applescript - Get status of windows ( Visible or in the dock )

    - by user1329172
I need some help for my appleScript. For all open windows, I want to know which one is hidden (in the dock), which one is visible and which one is focused? To list windows I use : tell application "System Events" set procs to processes set windowName to {} repeat with proc in procs try if exists (window 1 of proc) then repeat with w in windows of proc copy w's name to the end of windowName end repeat end if end try -- ignore errors end repeat end tell return windowName I tried focused property: copy w's focused to the end of windowName and selected property: copy w's selected to the end of windowName But this doesn't work! Thanks for help!

  • Sending a message to nil?

    - by Ryan Delucchi
As a Java developer who is reading Apple's Objective-C 2.0 documentation: I wonder as to what sending a message to nil means - let alone how it is actually useful. Taking an excerpt from the documentation: There are several patterns in Cocoa that take advantage of this fact. The value returned from a message to nil may also be valid: If the method returns an object, any pointer type, any integer scalar of size less than or equal to sizeof(void*), a float, a double, a long double, or a long long, then a message sent to nil returns 0. If the method returns a struct, as defined by the Mac OS X ABI Function Call Guide to be returned in registers, then a message sent to nil returns 0.0 for every field in the data structure. Other struct data types will not be filled with zeros. If the method returns anything other than the aforementioned value types the return value of a message sent to nil is undefined. Has Java rendered my brain incapable of grokking the explanation above? Or is there something that I am missing that would make this as clear as glass? Note: Yes, I do get the idea of messages/receivers in Objective-C, I am simply confused about a receiver that happens to be nil.
