  A quick question: When i pass a variable to a function, dose the program make a copy of that variable to use in the function? If it dose and I knew that the function would only read the variable and never write to it, is it possible to pass a variable to the function without creating a copy of that variable or should I just leave that up to the compiler optimizations to do that automatically for me?

  While looking at the syntax-case section in R6RS, I saw the keyword make-variable-transformer, described as an identifier macro. The example given is very minimal, and I am not groking why it is necessary, or what use-cases require it. Finding additional examples of its use is also proving difficult. Presumably it makes some form of syntax transformation possible, or more elegant?

• Integer variable is acquiring a string value of "ad" somewhere along the line, can anyone see where?

  Here is my code: I should get output of the department id (did) as an integer and the templatefilename (result) that is required. The errors I get are: Conversion from string "ad" to type 'Integer' is not valid. I'm fairly new to asp.net and cannot see where the did variable picks up the "ad" string.   Coming from a .NET background I'm use to reusing string variables for storage, so is the code below likely to cause a memory leak? The code is targeting OS X on the iphone/itouch so no automatic GC. -(NSString*) stringExample { NSString *result = @"example"; result = [result stringByAppendingString:@" test"]; // where does "example" go? return result; } What confuses me is an NSStrings are immutable, but you can reuse an 'immutable' variable with no problem.

  I am curious if there is any history behind why the ^ character is used to escape the special characters <, , |, &, and ^ in environment variable names in Windows instead the '\' character that is typically used to escape special characters.
