• Loading a big database dump into PostgreSQL using cat

  I have a pair of very large (~17 GB) database dumps that I want to load into postgresql 9.3. After installing the database packages, learning more or less how to use them, and fiddling around a little on various StackExchange pages (particularly this question), it looks like a proper command for me to use is something like: cat mydb.pgdump | psql mydb because of the format the dump is in. My machine has 16 GB of RAM, and I'm not familiar with the cat command but I do know that my RAM is 99% exhausted and the database is taking a while to load. My machine isn't non-responsive to the point of hanging; I can run other commands in other terminal windows and have them execute at a reasonable clip, but I am wondering if cat is the best way to pipe in the file or if something else is more efficient? My concern is that maybe cat could be using up all the RAM so the database doesn't have much to work with, throttling its performance. But I'm new to thinking about RAM issues like this and don't know if I'm worrying about nothing. Now that I think about it, this seems to be more of a question about cat and its memory usage than anything else. If there is a more appropriate forum for this question please let me know. Thanks!

• Restoring MBR, partition table, and boot sector of memory card without data loss ("USBC")

  Abstract I have a FAT32 memory card that when inserted into a computer causes Windows to prompt to format it. The card is definitely not supposed to be blank and has a bunch of files on it. Symptoms Using a hex-editor/disk-viewer, I examined the card and found that several sectors/clusters have been overwritten with something that has a signature of USBC at the start of the sector. Specifically, the master boot record (and partition table) is gone (hence Windows thinking the card is blank and needing to be formatted), as are the boot sectors (they have the USBC signature and a volume label of NO NAME and partition type of FAT32). Fortunately, it looks like both copies of the FAT are almost entirely intact (a few FAT entries at the start of a cluster here and there seem to be overwritten by USBC). The root directory is also nearly intact—I can see the volume label entry and subdirectory listings, but one sector is overwritten. (There are no more instances of USBC after the last one in the FAT2.) Hypothesis These observations seem to indicate some sort of virus that erases a few key filesystem structures, and then overwrites a few extra sectors here and there. Googling it seems to corroborate the idea of a virus, except that others report a file called USBC which does not apply here, and in fact, could not be possible since there is no filesystem to even see files. I cannot find any information about a virus with these symptoms, nor a removal tool. (I can't help but wonder if it is actually due to an autorun virus prevention tool.) Question I can likely fix the FAT corruption since they are mostly contiguous chains and maybe even the lost sector of the root directory, but does anyone know of a convenient way to restore or (re)create the MBR/partition table and boot sectors (without formatting or overwriting the data)?

• Out of memory errors but not actually out of memory...

  So, myself and my fellow support techs have been fighting with this issue and we still dont know what the problem is. Lets start off with the system specs: Windows XP 32 bit Corporate (SP2 and SP3) Intel D975XBX2 Mobo 4gb of ram Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 ATI Radeon HD 3600 - 512mb After a few hours of working on the machine, the end user will begin to see the following symptoms: Out of memory messages Title bars and menus dont draw in properly Problems accessing network resources Problems opening up documents such as MSWord and MSPowerpoint and text files Problems opening up explorer windows General instability We have looked at task manager while this issue was occurring, and all indicators, like PF usage, threads, handles, etc. are normal. We have been having trouble pinpointing the root cause of this issue. It is also not situated with one user, it affects 8-10. So far we have tried: Resetting CMOS (Waiting to see results) Replacing video card (didnt help) Windows updates (didnt help) Updating network drivers (didnt help) Switching user from 1gbps to 100mbps network connection (awaiting results) Swapping the affected user's hardware (waiting for results) Increasing desktop heap size (helped for a bit but then the issue became more frequent) Applying the /3 switch to XP (didnt help) Increasing and decreasing and setting PF to system managed state (didnt help) We did have a power outage at the office a couple weeks ago, and all these issues became more frequent. Prior to the power outage it may take a week or so for the users to experience the issues but since the power outage it takes 3-4 hours or less. We havent had reports of the above issues causing BSODs, although that would be easier to diagnose :). Any help is greatly appreciated.

• Plesk Uninstall Memory issue

  I am trying to uninstall plesk from my VPS by running following command: yum remove sw-* psa-* plesk-* when i run this command i get following error: Running rpm_check_debug Running Transaction Test memory alloc (4 bytes) returned NULL. First time when i run above command, this mem alloc (4 bytes) was very big number like (67864987). then i googled it, got some clear/ulimit commands. executed them. rebooted my system. stopped all process and executed this command again. but still getting 4 byte issue. dont know how to get rid of it. I also tried ulimit after reboot but no success and Yes. • Muti-Schema Privileges for a Table Trigger in an Oracle Database

  I'm trying to write a table trigger which queries another table that is outside the schema where the trigger will reside. Is this possible? It seems like I have no problem querying tables in my schema but I get: Error: ORA-00942: table or view does not exist when trying trying to query tables outside my schema. EDIT My apologies for not providing as much information as possible the first time around. I was under the impression this question was more simple. I'm trying create a trigger on a table that changes some fields on a newly inserted row based on the existence of some data that may or may not be in a table that is in another schema. The user account that I'm using to create the trigger does have the permissions to run the queries independently. In fact, I've had my trigger print the query I'm trying to run and was able to run it on it's own successfully. I should also note that I'm building the query dynamically by using the EXECUTE IMMEDIATE statement. Here's an example: CREATE OR REPLACE TRIGGER MAIN_SCHEMA.EVENTS BEFORE INSERT ON MAIN_SCHEMA.EVENTS REFERENCING OLD AS OLD NEW AS NEW FOR EACH ROW DECLARE rtn_count NUMBER := 0; table_name VARCHAR2(17) := :NEW.SOME_FIELD; key_field VARCHAR2(20) := :NEW.ANOTHER_FIELD; BEGIN CASE WHEN (key_field = 'condition_a') THEN EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'select count(*) from OTHER_SCHEMA_A.'||table_name||' where KEY_FIELD='''||key_field||'''' INTO rtn_count; WHEN (key_field = 'condition_b') THEN EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'select count(*) from OTHER_SCHEMA_B.'||table_name||' where KEY_FIELD='''||key_field||'''' INTO rtn_count; WHEN (key_field = 'condition_c') THEN EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'select count(*) from OTHER_SCHEMA_C.'||table_name||' where KEY_FIELD='''||key_field||'''' INTO rtn_count; END CASE; IF (rtn_count > 0) THEN -- change some fields that are to be inserted END IF; END; The trigger seams to fail on the EXECUTE IMMEDIATE with the previously mentioned error. EDIT I have done some more research and I can offer more clarification. The user account I'm using to create this trigger is not MAIN_SCHEMA or any one of the OTHER_SCHEMA_Xs. The account I'm using (ME) is given privileges to the involved tables via the schema users themselves. For example (USER_TAB_PRIVS): GRANTOR GRANTEE TABLE_SCHEMA TABLE_NAME PRIVILEGE GRANTABLE HIERARCHY MAIN_SCHEMA ME MAIN_SCHEMA EVENTS DELETE NO NO MAIN_SCHEMA ME MAIN_SCHEMA EVENTS INSERT NO NO MAIN_SCHEMA ME MAIN_SCHEMA EVENTS SELECT NO NO MAIN_SCHEMA ME MAIN_SCHEMA EVENTS UPDATE NO NO OTHER_SCHEMA_X ME OTHER_SCHEMA_X TARGET_TBL SELECT NO NO And I have the following system privileges (USER_SYS_PRIVS): USERNAME PRIVILEGE ADMIN_OPTION ME ALTER ANY TRIGGER NO ME CREATE ANY TRIGGER NO ME UNLIMITED TABLESPACE NO And this is what I found in the Oracle documentation: To create a trigger in another user's schema, or to reference a table in another schema from a trigger in your schema, you must have the CREATE ANY TRIGGER system privilege. With this privilege, the trigger can be created in any schema and can be associated with any user's table. In addition, the user creating the trigger must also have EXECUTE privilege on the referenced procedures, functions, or packages. Here: Oracle Doc So it looks to me like this should work, but I'm not sure about the "EXECUTE privilege" it's referring to in the doc.

  Hi there, I have what seems to be a pretty common problem when trying to take a differential backup. We have a SQL Server 2008 Standard (64bit) and we use Litespeed v 5.0.2.0 to take our backups. We take full backups once a week and a differential on a daily basis. The problem is, every time I try to take a diff backup I get the following error: "VDI open failed due to requested abort. BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally. Cannot perform a differential backup for database "myDb", because a current database backup does not exist. Perform a full database backup by reissuing BACKUP DATABASE, omitting the WITH DIFFERENTIAL option." The problem is that I know 100% I have a full backup because I just double checked. Only once I was able to take a diff backup and that was when I took it immediately after I took a full backup. I have searched around and noticed that this is pretty common (although mostly with SQL 2005) and a solution that a lot of ppl suggest and that I haven't tried yet is to disable the SQL Server VSS Writer service. The problem with this is #1 I think I might need this service since I am using a third party backup software and #2 I am not sure exactly what the service does and don't want to disable it just like that.   I have a database that stores the users of my application. When a new user signs up, a record is inserted into the database for that user. I have a replicated version (slave) of this database (using mysql for now). What I'm concerned about is this scenario: step 1: user signs up and user record is inserted into the database step 2: user then tries to login, and the login process queries the database for the user. however, this query hits the slave database, but the user record has not yet been replicated in the slave and it returns an error that the user does not exist. This is a pretty trivial example, but I can see how it can apply to a lot of cases. Is there a strategy for configuring replicated databases to help prevent this situation?

• XP IIS no longer listen to port 80 or 443 after installing Oracle 9i HTTP Server

  I have installed Oracle 9i HTTP Server together with the database. After restarting the PC, even though i restarted the IIS and stopped the Oracle HTTP Server. When I go to http://localhost/ The starting page is already the Oracle HTTP Server index page. Also when I look at the port that inetinfo.exe is listening to, it no longer listens to port 80 and the SSL port 443, even if i restart the IIS and World Wide Web Publishing service. Any idea what setting did oracle changed when I installed oracle 9i? The executable associated with the OracleOraHome90HTTPServer is C:\oracle\ora90\Apache\Apache\Apache.exe I already checked the tasklist and Apache is really not running. But there is no process listening to port 80 still even if the IIS restarts successfully. Any ideas how to fix this?

• How can I limit Safari's RAM use?

  Safari uses a lot of RAM. Especially when you add Safari's use to WebProcess's use: it comes to about 1.5 GB of memory (for me, anyway). How can I limit the amount of RAM Safari and WebProcess use? I know a similar question was asked last summer, but two of those answers have to do with the program in question (Dropbox) and the other answer encourages use of Terminal, which I find terribly confusing. Are there any other methods?

  I am new to Linux platform. I just tried installing Ubuntu alongside windows but allocated only 200 mb to the /boot partition which is not recommended. • Copy Database Wizard fails on creation of view into another not-yet-copied database

  Update - I found that doing a manual detach/reattach using MSDN article "How to: Move a Database Using Detach and Attach (Transact-SQL)" got around this issue. I'll just be creating a script to dettach and reattach but do the file copies manually. Any info on how to overcome the problems with the wizard would be helpful in the future. I am in the process of moving around 20 databases from our current server to a new one. When performing the copies however I have found that some databases can not copy if they have views into other databases that have not yet been copied to the target system. The log file generated says "failed with the following error: "Invalid object name" in reference to the database in the view. If I first copy just the database referenced in the view and then in a separate step copy the database over containing the view it is successful. However some other database have views into each other so can't just adjust the order in which the copy occurs. Is there any way to ignore this error and just allow everything to copy?

• strange memory usage pattern on windows server 2008 on login through remote desktop..

  I'm running Windows Server 2008 Datacenter Service Pack 2 on a VM Ware instance with 10Gb ram allocated. I'm not running IIS or SQL Server. Under 'normal' conditions, the machine uses ~5.5Gb of memory. However, when I login to the server through remote desktop, the memory usage slowly climbs up to 9.8Gb of memory in use. After several minutes the memory slowly creeps back down to the 5.5Gb mark. I've tried killing all the processes associated with my login, on login, barring the taskmanager without success, and I can't see any process that is growing in memory usage when the memory is increasing. I'm assuming this is some system level cache that is growing / shrinking... but why is it doing this?

If this happens, then all the transactions will be happening on that backup database.
