    In just over 2 weeks something pretty big in the SQL Server Community in the UK is taking place. We are going to witness the first SQL Saturday on these shores. The event is running in Cambridge, the home of the SQL Cambs user group and the chapter leader there (Mark Broadbent) is the lead on the SQL Saturday event too. Mark and his team are making final preparations and looking forward to this event getting started with the Pre-Con day on Friday 7th Sept.   • SQL Server 2008R2 Express: which is the users limit in a real case scenario?

    I know that sql server express has not a user limit, and every application has a different way to load/stress the server. But let's take "a typical accounting software", where users input some record, retrieve some data and from time to time they make some custom big queries. May someone share its own experience and tell me which is the limit of users that can realistically use a sql server express instance in this scenario? I am looking for an indicative idea, like (as an example): "I had a company with an average of 40 users logged in and the application was working ok on sql server express, but when the users become 60 the application started to seem non repsonsive" (please note this sentence is pure imagination, I just wrote it as an example).

  • Is there a log showing why a Windows server did not restart SQL Server after a reboot?

    Our server was rebooted after a Windows Update scheduled for 1am, but after the restart SQL Server did not start up, so our websites were unable to display. Usually this process happens with no manual intervention. Is there a log somewhere which might indicate the reason why the Windows startup process did not call SQL Server to get going again? I've looked in the Event Viewer (Application Log) and SQL's own file E:\MSSQL\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Log\ERRORLOG* but these only contain records of successful startup operations....nothing mentions a failed attempt to start a service or anything like that.

    Quite a long ago I wrote about a SQL Server programming tip on how to extract date part from a DATETIME column. The post discusses about using of T SQL function convert() to get date part. One of the readers of the post, tipped me about a better way of extracting date part and here is the SQL query he sent to us SELECT DateAdd(day, DateDiff(day, 0, getdate()), 0); In clean way this query trims off time part from the DATETIME value. I rate this solution better than the one I wrote long ago as this one does not depend on any string operations. According the commenter, this method is faster compared to the other. What do you say?     I am logged in as an admin on the computer. For some reason I can't log into SQL Server 2012 which is running on the same machine. The SA user is locked out. SQL Server was installed when I was logged in into my company's domain. I am not logged into the domain when I try to log in to sql server. I don't know if this matters st all. However I expect to log using Windows authentication if I am in the administrator group?

  • Setting Parameters from another Parameter In SSRS

    I was able to get this working is SSRS 2008, but do to the fact that my company only has 2005 servers I need to downgrade the report to 2005. The idea is for a given person name there are two key fields EntityType and EntityId So I have a parameter from a dataset where the Label is the Name and the value is EntityType_EntityId I use the split function to take the left and right sides of from _ In 2008, I set the query parameters of the dataset to the split function and it works In 2005, I set the Default Value of each Report Parameters Now when I run the report and put textboxes showing the value of the parameters, the values are shown correctly but the query does not run. I am guessing that this is a lifecycle issue being Get Name Parameter Run Report THEN Set Parameters = Split of Name But the problem with that is the second time I run the report I should get result and I do not. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong. I guess I can pass in the underscore delimted string to the stored procedure and parse it there, but my question is can this be done in the report? Reason being other callers will pass in the parameters as two seperate values.

  • Registering publicly Mail server and Web server in a free dns server

    I'm trying to host the e-mails and the site of our company into our private server. I've already followed the Gentoo Virtual Mailhosting System with Postfix Guide and my mail server is working (actually it sends mails for the local users and for external users it goes to spam) and know how to set an Apache 2 server. What I don't know (and I mean really don't) is how to make them public. I did some research and found that I should ask my ISP to change the reverse DNS to my company domain in order to prevent my mails to be marked as spam, they are doing. I already know I have to configure a DNS Server, it seems like my register provider already has one but I don't know how I can configure CNET, A, MX, TXT and all those tags (Is it tags the name?) and If I must do some other configuration on my server. My Server: Linux mail 3.2.21-gentoo #1 SMP My /etc/hosts: 127.0.0.1 mail.example.com.br example example.com.br ::1 mail.example.com.br mail example.com.br My /etc/conf.d/hostname: hostname ="mail" What am I missing?   • Should I partition my main table with 2 millions rows?

    Hi, I am a developer and would need some DBA-advices. We are starting to get performance problem with a MSSQL2005 database. The visible effects of the incidents is mainly CPU-hog on the server but operations reported that it was also draining resources from the SAN (not always). the main source of issues is for sure in some application but I am wondering if we should partition some of the main tables anyway in order to relax the I/O pressure. The base is about 60GB in one file. The main table (order) has 2.1 Million rows with a 215 colones (but none is huge). We have an integer as PK so it should be OK to define a partition function. Will we win something with partitioning? will partition indexes buy us something?   • Log shipping on select tables.

    I know I am most likely using incorrect terminology so please correct me if I use the wrong terms so I can search better. We have a very large database at a client's site and we would like to have up to date copies of some of the tables sent across the internet to our servers at our office. We would like to only copy a few of the tables because the bandwidth requirement to do log shipping of the entire database (our current solution) is too high. Also replication directly to our servers is out of the question as our servers are not accessible from the internet and management does not want to do replication (more on that later). One possible Idea we had is to do some form of replication on the tables we need to another database on the same server and do log shipping of that second smaller database but management is concerned that the clients have broken replication (it was between two servers on their internal network however) on us in the past and would like to stay away from it if possible. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. If using some form of replication is the only solution, I am not against replication, I just need compelling arguments to convince management to do it. This is to be set up on multiple sites that are running either Sql2005 or Sql2008 we will have both versions on our end to restore the data to so that is not a issue. Thank you.

  • Cannot connect to a SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services cube after installing SQL Server 2008 SP1.

    I've been developing an application that talks directly to an SSAS 2005 OLAP cube. Note that I also have SQL Server 2008 installed, so the other day I did a Windows Update and decided to include SQL Server 2008 SP1 in my update. After doing that, my SSAS 2005 cube is no longer accessible from my application. I'm able to browse the data just fine within SQL Server 2005 BI Studio Manager, but I'm not able to connect to the cube from my application.     I’m sitting in the Seattle airport, waiting for my flight to Silicon Valley California for the SQL Server 2008 R2 Launch Event. By some quirk of nature, they are asking me to Emcee the event – but that’s another post entirely.   I’m reflecting on the SQL Saturday 27 event that was just held in Portland, Oregon this last Saturday. These are not Microsoft-sponsored events – it’s truly the community at work. Think of a big user-group meeting – I mean REALLY big – held in a central location, like at a college (as ours was) or some larger, inexpensive venue like that. Everyone there is volunteering – it’s my own money and time to drive several hours to a hotel for the night, feed myself and present. It’s their own time and money for the folks that organize the event – unless a vendor or two steps in to help. It’s their own time and money for the attendees to drive a long way, spend the night and their Saturday to listen to the speakers. Why do all this?   Because everybody benefits. Every speaker learns something new, meets new people, and reaches a new audience. Every volunteer does the same. And the attendees? Well, it’s pretty obvious what they get. A 7Am to 10PM extravaganza of knowledge from every corner of the product. In fact, this year the Portland group hooked up with the CodeCamp folks and held a combined event. We had over 850 people, and I had everyone from data professionals to developers in my sessions.   So I’ll take this opportunity to do two things: to say “thank you” to all of the folks who attended, from those who spoke to those who worked and those who came to listen, and to challenge you to attend the next SQL Saturday anywhere near you. You can find the list here: http://www.sqlsaturday.com/. Don’t see anything in your area? Start one! The PASS folks have a package that will show you how. Sure, it’s a big job, but the key is to get as many people helping you as possible. Even if you have only a few dozen folks show up the first time, no worries.   • Project Server 2010 Beta - can't connect Project client to projects hosted on server

    We have a Project 2010 Beta installed on SharePoint 2010 Beta as test set-up whilst we wait for the release versions. Whilst the installation seemed to complete without any issues we're unable to open any projects within the Project 2010 client app. Project pops up an error 'Could not retrieve server initialization data'. My local event logs list some errors from MSSOAP that simply state an unanticipated error occurred during the processing of the request. The server doesn't log any errors. The Sharepoint set up is a farm containing 3 SharePoint servers. I log in to server 'PORTAL' but the Project Server stuff is configured to run on one of the other SharePoint boxes. I presume others have managed to get this working - has anyone got any ideas as to what could be wrong. Everything is patched correctly as far as I can tell.

  • Troubleshooting server performance with a hosted server?

    We are in a tough spot, we have a hosted server with the following specs: OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 64bit Processor: Intel Xeon X7550 @ 2GHz (8 processors) RAM: 16GB The file system is on a SAN or NAS (not sure). We are seeing very odd issues where a user will open a 25MB .xslb file and it takes literally 60-120 seconds sometimes. The server is just dog slow for excel. Resources are not being pegged, CPU never jumps up, plenty of RAM... it's just oddly slow. Our host has been looking at the issue for several weeks with not much to show for it. Is there a utility I can run myself that will help trackdown our issue? I have found Server Performance Advisor V1.0 Any experience in using it? Our host is ultimately responsible for fixing this, but we are going on 1 month and our users are losing patience. Any tips would be helpful.

It takes 7-10 seconds for each of these windows to draw on the screen. The end result is that every time I answer a prompt and hit enter I wait for 15 seconds while the screen redraws line by line. I can literally see each line of text being drawn (like the old 300 baud modems days). Once done installing, scrolling on the command line is super slow. For instance, if a simple command, like "ls", causes the screen to scroll, it will scroll very slowly. This happens on a fresh install. The server functions as a LAMP server and an OpenSSH server, but that's it (I don't even have any Virtual Hosts set up yet). AND this only happens on the Virtual Machine console. I access the console through Hyper-V Manager and don't have this problem on any of my other Virtual Machines. Also, this problem does NOT happen when accessing a shell through OpenSSH. How can I improve this performance issue?

    I'm setting up a public web server: Windows Server 2008 R2, IIS7.5. Does anyone have a tutorial / walkthrough / tips on properly securing a public web server? I've seen a few tutorials but mostly focused on Windows Server 2003. What I've done so far: Created a specific user account for the website / app pool, Renamed Admin account, Installed FTPS, Configured firewall to block any non-public service (web / https), Configured firewall to allow access to management interfaces only from specific IP addresses (rdp, IIS management, ftp) Maybe a few other things but can't remember at the moment... ICMP is allowed... Should I disable all except ping? Port scan reveals only web and https ports. Any other suggestions? Thanks

  • MySQL Linked Server and SQL Server 2008 Express Performance

    Hi All, I am currently trying to setup a MySQL Linked Server via SQL Server 2008 Express. I have tried two methods, creating a DSN using the mySQL 5.1 ODBC driver, and using Cherry Software OLE DB Driver as well. The method that I prefer would be using the ODBC driver, but both run horrendously slow (doing one simple join takes about 5 min). Is there any way I can get better performance? We are trying to cross query between multiple mySQL databases on different servers, and this seems to be method we think would work well. Any comments, suggestions, etc... would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Jeffrey
