• Microsoft Sql Server 2008 R2 System Databases

  For a majority of software developers little time is spent understanding the inner workings of the database management systems (DBMS) they use to store data for their applications.  I personally place myself in this grouping. In my case, I have used various versions of Microsoft’s SQL Server (2000, 2005, and 2008 R2) and just recently learned how valuable they really are when I was preparing to deliver a lecture on "SQL Server 2008 R2, System Databases". Microsoft Sql Server 2008 R2 System DatabasesSo what are system databases in MS SQL Server, and why should I know them? Microsoft uses system databases to support the SQL Server DBMS, much like a developer uses config files or database tables to support an application. These system databases individually provide specific functionality that allows MS SQL Server to function. Name Database File Log File Master master.mdf mastlog.ldf Resource mssqlsystemresource.mdf mssqlsystemresource.ldf Model model.mdf modellog.ldf MSDB msdbdata.mdf msdblog.ldf Distribution distmdl.mdf distmdl.ldf TempDB tempdb.mdf templog.ldf Master DatabaseIf you have used MS SQL Server then you should recognize the Master database especially if you used the SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) to connect to a user created database. MS SQL Server requires the Master database in order for DBMS to start due to the information that it stores. Examples of data stored in the Master database User Logins Linked Servers Configuration information Information on User Databases Resource DatabaseHonestly, until recently I never knew this database even existed until I started to research SQL Server system databases. The reason for this is due largely to the fact that the resource database is hidden to users. In fact, the database files are stored within the Binn folder instead of the standard MS SQL Server database folder path. This database contains all system objects that can be accessed by all other databases.  In short, this database contains all system views and store procedures that appear in all other user databases regarding system information. One of the many benefits to storing system views and store procedures in a single hidden database is the fact it improves upgrading a SQL Server database; not to mention that maintenance is decreased since only one code base has to be mainlined for all of the system views and procedures. Model DatabaseThe Model database as the name implies is the model for all new databases created by users. This allows for predefining default database objects for all new databases within a MS SQL Server instance. For example, if every database created by a user needs to have an “Audit” table when it is  created then defining the “Audit” table in the model will guarantees that the table will be located in every new database create after the model is altered. MSDB DatabaseThe MSDBdatabase is used by SQL Server Agent, SQL Server Database Mail, SQL Server Service Broker, along with SQL Server. The SQL Server Agent uses this database to store job configurations and SQL job schedules along with SQL Alerts, and Operators. In addition, this database also stores all SQL job parameters along with each job’s execution history.  Finally, this database is also used to store database backup and maintenance plans as well as details pertaining to SQL Log shipping if it is being used. Distribution DatabaseThe Distribution database is only used during replication and stores meta data and history information pertaining to the act of replication data. Furthermore, when transactional replication is used this database also stores information regarding each transaction. It is important to note that replication is not turned on by default in MS SQL Server and that the distribution database is hidden from SSMS. Tempdb DatabaseThe Tempdb as the name implies is used to store temporary data and data objects. Examples of this include temp tables and temp store procedures. It is important to note that when using this database all data and data objects are cleared from this database when SQL Server restarts. This database is also used by SQL Server when it is performing some internal operations. Typically, SQL Server uses this database for the purpose of large sort and index operations. Finally, this database is used to store row versions if row versioning or snapsot isolation transactions are being used by SQL Server. Additionally, I would love to hear from others about their experiences using system databases, tables, and objects in a real world environments.

• CMSs & ERPs for hospital management system

  Hi, What are the best free CMSs or CMS plugins or ERPs or any other free tools available for developing a hospital management system? I want to develop it for a children's hospital run by my father. The hospital is small with two doctors. Currently, everything is done manually on paper. The main entities who will be using the system are: Receptionist, the two doctors, chemist and the medical laboratorist. They will use it majorly for keeping the records of the patient. The patients would not be interacting with the system directly. The system needs to be user friendly and should be easy to learn. I was thinking to develop such a system using a CMS or an ERP or any other free tool. I have used wordpress/drupal in past but never used an ERP. • Where to generate data in an Entity-Component System?

  So I'm making a small game where I generate 2D landscape using perlin noise when the game first loads. I've got it working in a OO way, but want to move over to an ES architecure, and I'm just struggling to work out the right place for the code that does the generation to go? In OO world, I have a World object which gets passes a coordinate value that is used as the seed for the perlin noise, and generates all the points for the land mass when the world is created. I'm thinking I need a World component with a coordinate field on it - that's an easy part. From there - is it right for a component to generate data when it's first initialised (or is that too OO?)? Or should a System be doing that instead, when the game first starts? Or... some other solution I'm not aware of? Thanks in advance for any guidance.

• Cannot see user desktop (Applications, Places, System...) when I log in

  I am very new to Ubuntu. I recently got a new laptop running Windows 7. I am using Virtual Box and just installed the Ubuntu 12.10 ISO as a new Virtual Machine within Virtual Box. Everything seemed to install just fine and I even added the Guest Additions under Devices. The problem is that I cannot see the menus and my login information. The virtual machine says it is running; however, I do not have the Applications, Places, System, etc. tray to select from. Is there something I am supposed to do after logging in to get this? I entered my password and everything seemed fine, I just don't have those drop-down menus available...

  I am trying to diagnose this exception. "System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80070008): Not enough storage is available to process this command. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070008) at System.Runtime.Remoting.RemotingServices.AllocateUninitializedObject(RuntimeType objectType) at System.Runtime.Remoting.RemotingServices.AllocateUninitializedObject(Type objectType) at System.Runtime.Remoting.Activation.ActivationServices.CreateInstance(Type serverType) at System.Runtime.Remoting.Activation.ActivationServices.IsCurrentContextOK(Type serverType, Object[] props, Boolean bNewObj) at Oracle.DataAccess.Client.CThreadPool..ctor() at Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleCommand.set_CommandTimeout(Int32 value) ... It does not look like any of the normal types of "storage" have hit any limits. The application is using about 400MB of memory, 70 threads, 2000 handles and the hard drive has many GB free. The machine is running Windows 2003 Enterprise server with 16GB of RAM so memory shouldn't be an issue. The application is running as a windows service so there are no GDI objects being used. Running out of GDI handles is a common cause of this exception. Database connections, commands & readers are all all wrapped with using blocks so they should be getting cleaned up correctly.

  Hi! I have a OdbcDataReader that gets data from a database and returns a set of records. The code that executes the query looks as follows: OdbcDataReader reader = command.ExecuteReader(); while (reader.Read()) { yield return reader.AsMovexProduct(); } The method returns an IEnumerable of a custom type (MovexProduct). I should also mention that I get the same exception if I change the if-statemnt to this: if (record.GetString(4) != null). What does work is encapsulating the property-assignment in a try {} catch (NullReferenceException) {} block - but that can lead to performance-loss (can it not?). I am running the x64 version of Visual Studio and I'm using a 64-bit odbc driver. Has anyone else come across this? Any suggestions as to how I could solve / get around this issue? Many thanks!

  Okay, so I'm cheating and not actually a question, but instead making a flat-out post. I know that goes against the grain of Stack Overflow, but this is too valuable not to share. I'm assuming that you have Visual Studio Professional 2008 and access to an instance of MySQL server. This MAY work with VS2008 Web edition, but not at all sure. If you haven't, install MySQL Connector for .NET (6.2.2.0 at the time of this write-up) Optional: install MySQL GUI Tools If you haven't, install MVC 2 RTM, or better yet, use Microsoft's Web Platform Installer. Create an empty MySQL database. If you don't want to access your application with the MySQL root user account (insecure), create a user account and assign the appropriate privileges (outside the scope of this write-up). Create a new MVC 2 application in Visual Studio In the MVC 2 app, reference MySql.Web.dll. It will either be in your GAC, or in the folder that the MySQL Connector installer put it. Once the tool launches, check out each of the tabs; no errors = all good. The configuration tool Nathan Bridgewater's blog was essential to getting this working. Kudos, Nathan. Look for the "Configuration Tool" heading half way down the page. The public key token on the MySql.web.dll that I've posted here ought not change any time soon. But in case you suspect a bad token string from copying and pasting or whatever, just use the Visual Studio command line to run: "sn -T [Path\to\your.dll]" in order to get the correct public key token. There you have it, ASP.NET MVC 2 running over MySQL. Cheers!

• Why does ASP.Net locks when I update code with TortoiseSVN

  Hi, when I update Adobe Flash/Flex code that is not related to ASP.Net with TortoiseSVN (latest) on a Windows Server 2008, the complete website locks and stop responding. Is it ASP.Net recompiling my code, is it IIS 7 or is it Tortoise locking the file system? How can I prevent or minimize this if I need to do an update when 1000 users are using the ASP.Net website? UPDATE: Thanks to Aito and Bryan, I learned more about AppDomain. I found these two links where I discover that folder creation/deletion recycle the AppDomain in ASP.Net 2. --If TortoiseSVN creates folders in it's hidden .svn folders hierarchy, I guess it will lock the app! • Does .net calling COM which in turn calls other .net COM object works when using SxS and manifest fi

  I have a .net application calling to a COM component (C++) which in turn calls to another COM object implemented in .NET. This application is using Windows SxS capabilities and does not register any of it's COM components. Not the one written in C++, and not the one written in .net. This first call to the C++ COM component works fine. But when the C++ COM component calls to the .net one, it fails with class not registered. I have tried creating a small C++ app with a manifest file which calls the .net component and it works. It seems that when the flow is .net - COM NATIVE - .NET COM. Then SxS breaks and does not work. When looking at Fusion Logs (assembly loading logs) I see that no one is even attempting to resolve the .NET COM assembly. Is this SxS scenario even supposed to work (I think it does supposed to work)? If yes, then what can I be doing wrong ?

• Newbie question about controllers in ASP.Net MVC.

  I'm following a tutorial on creating the NerdDinner using ASP.Net MVC. However, I'm using Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate edition and there was only MVC2 to choose from. So I've following the tutorial so far, and everything is really clicking and being really well explained, until this little hitch. The guide is asking me to create new methods on a Controller file like so: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Web; using System.Web.Mvc; namespace NerdDinner.Controllers { public class DinnersController : Controller { public void Index(){ Response.Write("<h1>Coming Soon: Dinners</h1>"); } public void Details(int id) { Response.Write("<h1>Details DinnerID: " + id + "</h1>"); } } } However, when I created the Controllers file, Visual Studio created an Index method already, but it looks vastly different to what the tutorial shows.   Yesterday s**ked, and today ain't (sic) looking better. I have an application I have been working on and it can be slow to start when my ISP is down because of DNS. My ISP was down for 3 hours yesterday, so I didn't think much about this piece of code I had added, until I found that it is always slow to start. This code is supposed to return your IP address and my reading of the link suggests that should be immediate, but it isn't, at least on my machine. Oh, and yesterday before the internet went down, I upgraded (oymoron) to XP SP3, and have had other problems. So my questions / request: 1. Am I doing this right? 2. If you run this on your machine does it take 39 seconds to return your IP address? It does on mine. One other note, I did a packet capture and the first request did NOT go on the wire, but the second did, and was answered quickly. So the question is what happened in XP SP3 that I am missing, besides a brain. One last note. If I resolve a FQDN all is well. • Asp.net Crawler Webresponse Operation Timed out.

  Hi I have built a simple threadpool based web crawler within my web application. Its job is to crawl its own application space and build a Lucene index of every valid web page and their meta content. Here's the problem. When I run the crawler from a debug server instance of Visual Studio Express, and provide the starting instance as the IIS url, it works fine. However, when I do not provide the IIS instance and it takes its own url to start the crawl process(ie. crawling its own domain space), I get hit by operation timed out exception on the Webresponse statement. Could someone please guide me into what I should or should not be doing here? Here is my code for fetching the page.   I'm trying to read up on asp.net mvc, I have never used asp.net before but are familiar with regular c# development. Freshly installed, fully patched Windows XP Home. Freshly installed updated to SP1 Visual Studio 2008 Pro. Started a new project, selected "ASP.NET MVC Web Application", target framework is 3.5 I hit F5 and I get: "Could not load file or assembly System.EnterpriseServices" Exact wording in swedish: [FileNotFoundException: Det går inte att hitta filen. (Undantag från HRESULT: 0x80070002)] [FileNotFoundException: Det går inte att läsa in filen eller sammansättningen System.EnterpriseServices, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a eller ett av dess beroenden. Det går inte att hitta filen.] Adding a reference to System.EnterpriseServices in my project did not work. A quick google suggested I copy this file Microsoft.NET/Framework/v2.0.50727/System.EnterpriseServices.dll into %WINDOWS%/assembly but that did not work either. Any suggestions? • Images in database vs file system

  We have a project coming up where we will be building a whole backend CMS system that will power our entire extranet and intranet with one package. The question I have been trying to find an answer to is which is better: storing images in the database (SQL Server 2005) so we may have integrity, single replication plan, etc OR storing on the file system? One issue we have is that we have multiple servers load balanced that require to have the same data at all times. As of now we have SQL replication taking care of that but file replication seems to be a little tougher. Another concern we have is that we would like to have multiple resolutions of the same image, we are not sure if creating and storing each version on the file system would be best or maybe dynamically pulling and creating the resolution image we would like upon request. Our concerns are the with the following: Data integrity Data replication Multiple resolutions Speed of database vs file system Overhead load of database vs file system Data management and backup Does anyone have a similar situation or have any input on what would be recommended?
