• Hiring Developers - Any tips on being more efficient?

  I represent a software company that is in process of building a large software development team. We are picky in who we hire and have really good retention rate (most of the devs have been here for an average of 5-6 years). We've been spending a lot of developers' and HR time and have a low applications to hire ratio. Here's the process we use: HR Interview on phone - Involves asking basic behaviorial and tech questions Online test - Involves a 30 minute technical test Technical Phone interview - A 60 minute interview by a developer Onsite Interview - A 60-90 minute interview by several senior developers Although this process has been working, we've been spending way too much time on interviews. Any thoughts on how this can be done differently? Our goal is to automate any tasks if possible still retaining the quality of talent.

• I don't understand why algorithms are so special

  I'm a student of computer science trying to soak up as much information on the topic as I can during my free time. I keep returning to algorithms time and again in various formats (online course, book, web tutorial), but the concept fails to sustain my attention. I just don't understand: why are algorithms so special? I can tell you why fractals are awesome, why the golden ratio is awesome, why origami is awesome and scientific applications of all the above. Heck I even love Newton's laws and conical sections. But when it comes to algorithms, I'm just not astounded. They are not insightful in new ways about human cognition at all. I was expecting algorithms to be shattering preconceptions and mind-altering but time and time again they fail miserably. What am I doing wrong in my approach? Can someone tell me why algorithms are so awesome?

• fix a broken ubuntu installation from pendrive

  Something went wrong in the upgrade of my Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10 The upgrade basically crashed halfway through. On booting I was thrown into a maintainence screen. I found some online instructions for fixing with the package manager ... Which seemed to do a lot of setting up. But then crashed saying package is in a bad inconsistent state. Now I'm in a position where Ubuntu starts again, but goes into a low-res screen and there's no WiFi. I have no Ethernet cable connection but I did download the 13.10 iso on another machine and put it on a pen drive. So I'd like to know there's a way of asking the machine from inside Ubuntu to redo its upgrade from the data on the pendrive rather than WiFi. Is this possible? Cheers Phil

• Ubuntu One synching changed files

  I have several folders in the Ubuntu1 folder and if I add a new file (on my PC oder my Mobile) the file shows up in the other device or in the online access. However, if I change one of the files (like a spreadsheet I change almost daily on my PC) Ubuntu1 is not updating the changed file. It is still the old file on the other devices. Doesn't Ubuntu1 sync changed files only new ones or do I have to change some settings? Could someone be so nice and help me? Thanks in advance! Mark PS: I am using Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit.

• Already have Merchant Account, what info will my Gateway need?

  I have a client who already has a merchant account for their physical store. What specific information about the merchant account will my client need to get from his bank to link it up to an online payment gateway that we will be using for the store? -----edits below -"my merchant account" changed to "the merchant account" -It is noted that my client will need to get a "high-risk" merchant account separate from his existing physical stores merchant account. -Though the question is essentially answered, for clarification: We plan to minimize our PCI compliance needs by utilizing something like Braintree's Transparent Redirect or the CRESecure iForm. So the gateway we would need to give the merchant account info to would be either of those two. Though, the CRESecure method would have yet one more step added into the mix since they would forward data to another payment provider. It is now assumed that the best place to field this question is to the support team at Braintree or CRESecure.

• Any really decent way to get three monitors?

  What satisfactory solutions are there to achieve three monitors on Ubuntu? I know some ATI cards (Eyefinity) can support 3 monitors from a single card, but I don't know how well this is supported under Linux and besides, I've never had much luck with ATI on Linux. The alternative is to try two cards, but there seem to be problems there too. It looks to me like xrandr cannot support 2 GPUs. I believe you'll end up with two separate "Screens" across which you cannot move applications or windows, unless you enable Xinerama which as I understand it disables some acceleration and probably compositing too. I've found so much conflicting information on this online, I'm really confused. Please advise!

• 81% of European Shoppers Willing to Pay More for Better Customer Experience

  Customer Experience provides strategic driver for business growth Research released today from Oracle has revealed that customer experience is now a key driver for revenue growth in Europe, and an effective channel for brand differentiation in a globalized economy where products and services are increasingly commoditized. The research report, “Why Customer Satisfaction is No Longer Good Enough,” reveals that 81% of consumers surveyed are willing to pay more for superior customer experience. With nearly half (44%) willing to pay a premium of more than 5%. Improvement of the overall customer experience (40%), providing quick access to information and making it easier for customers to ask questions (35%) were cited as key drivers for spending more with a brand.   I'm starting a website, that is meant for a non-English region, using an alphabet that is a bit different than that of English. Current plan is as follows. The website name, and the domain name, will be in the local language (not English); however, domain name will be spelled in the English alphabet, while the website's title will be the same word(s), but spelled properly with accents. E.g.: 'www.litterat.fr' and 'Littérat'. Does the difference between domain name and website name character use influence the site's SEO? Is it better, SEO-wise, to choose a name that can be spelled the same way in the English alphabet? From my experience, when searching online, invariably, the English alphabet is used, no matter the language, so people will still be searching 'litterat' (without accents and such).

  Hi I just updated my ubuntu to the latest and on package manager it told me all my gnome packages were broken and i couldn't make any updates until i deleted the gnomes. i had no idea that would screw me. anyways i logged out now i cant login anymore. it flashes right back to the login screen. and it looks very downgraded. anywho, i have no idea how to fix it, ive been looking online for a while. and everytime i try to remove or add anything, upgrade. i get this error.errors were encountered while processing: E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) so confused

  I've made a banner for my website and I'm planning to ask my followers to share it on their website to help improve my rank. my website is hosted on GAE, the banners are less than 5kb/each and I must say that I don't want to pay for extra bandwidth I've read the Google App Engine Quotas but honestly I don't understand anything of it. Would you please tell me which table/data in this page should be of my concern? Also, do you think it's wise to host such banners, that are going to end up on 3rd party websites, on the GAE? or am I more secure if I use free online services like Google Picasa?

• How do I grok NHibernate's QueryOver API?

  I've run into the limits of what NHibernate 3.0's LINQ provider is capable of and decided it's time to learn about one of the more powerful (or at least feature-complete) options: the QueryOver API. The problem is, I have zero experience with ICriteria, and all of the tutorials I've been able to find online either: Assume I'm an ICriteria expert and simply show me how to convert ICriteria code to the new fluent interface, or Are trivial "here's how you do an inner join" examples that don't really help me understand more complex concepts like projections, subqueries, requirements, or whatever other magic the API is capable of. What should I read to really learn about QueryOver, and how to make full use of it?

I have realised that I have many many ideas and notes for blogs entries dotted around my desk, along with a number of half completed entries that I have been meaning to get sorted and finished and posted. • Unable to use TL-WN821N

  Hi, I got a TP-LINK USB wireless module - TL-WN821N, using Ubuntu 10.4 (same problems were also seen in 10.10). From everything I've read online, the usb should work just fine, since the Atheros ar9170 is built into the kernel. However, when I plug it in, it is detected as a USB device, but there is no wlan associated with it, and basically - nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong? what should I do so that the Atheros driver is associated with this device? btw, on Windows it works fine (with the drivers). • I want a trivial example of where MongoDB can scale but a relational database will have trouble

  I'm just learning to use MongoDB, and when discussing with other programmers would like a quick example of why NoSQL can be a good choice compared to a traditional RDBMS - however the scenarios I come up with and can find online seem pretty contrived. E.g. a blog with lots of traffic could be represented relationally, but will require some performance tuning and joins across tables (assuming full denormalization is being used). Whereas MongoDB would allow direct retrieval from one collection to the same effect. But the response I'm getting from other programmers is "why not just keep it relational and then add some trivial caching later?" Does anybody have a less contrived example where MongoDB will really shine and a relational db will fall over much quicker? The smaller the project/system the better, because it leaves less room for disagreement. Something along the lines of the complexity of the blog example would be really useful. Thanks.
