• Good PPA for ffmpeg

  Its annoying that the default ffmpeg in ubuntu's repositories is outdated and hobbled for legal reasons, however, there's a great page on the forums that walks you through building it from scratch: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=786095 (I also add in support for --enable-libdc1394 --enable-libgsm --enable-libopenjpeg --enable-libschroedinger --enable-libspeex when I build, which is nice, but not essential.) Anyway, I'm getting set to setup a computer lab running ubuntu for a multimedia class I'm teaching, and I was wondering if there was PPA out there that did something similar to what is available when building from scratch. The things I absolutely need from it are up-to-date libxvid, libx264, libfaac, and libmp3lame support plus the un-encumbered stuff (vorbis, theora, vpx). Is there a PPA out there that provides something like this?

  Working for a Microsoft partner I was very fortunate enough to be given clearance to order a Microsoft Surface RT tablet. Justification, show new device to a customer event this Thursday. All good, time to develop an App. Surface arrived last Wednesday. Overnight, Coco our much loved one year old puppy Larba-Doodle pulled the power chord out of my bag and bit right through the cable (at the power-brick end). A quick re-order to Microsoft saved the day. Demo went great. Surface is fab, Coco; much loved too Laptop bag now placed a bit higher up in our house.

• How to remove non-working session entries in LightDM?

  I recently added Cairo Dock to my GNOME Shell in 11.10. Cairo Dock is GREAT, but I'm left with one little problem that I'd like to fix: after installing Cairo Dock, LightDM includes two extraneous entries to non-working desktops. (The entries to working desktops remain unaffected, so I guess I could just ignore the extraneous entries, but...) So I'd like to remove/edit the extraneous entries in LightDM. I've looked and looked for discussions on how to do so, but haven't had much luck. Any suggestions on how to go about editing the login menu in 11.10?

• Good Intro to Computer Science Book for FE Developer [on hold]

  I am a JavaScript developer/architect who, like many developers these days, did not come from a Computer Science background (I studied Philosophy at a liberal arts college), but instead learned development by actually building applications, and by reading books explaining language grammars, design patterns, and best practices. I have never felt that my ignorance of CS concepts has hurt my ability to build great apps or find employment. Recently, however, I have felt the itch to grow in this direction. Do you have any suggestions for some good introductory CS resources/books? I know that Computer Science is a huge field and my question is very general, but I am looking for a 101-type survey of the high-level concepts, from which I can branch off into more specific areas of study. • Rendering transparent textures in directX

  I am working with a directX application with WPF, I am facing a problem with videos and images that contains transparent pixels, I have to draw a color in background an then a video/image over it. What I expect is background color should be visible while playing video only non transparent pixels should be visible but what I get is a black background behind the video. I am using following settings on device to achieve alpha blending : device.RenderState.SourceBlend = Blend.SourceAlpha; device.RenderState.DestinationBlend = Blend.InvSourceAlpha; device.RenderState.AlphaBlendEnable = true; What am I missing here? What is the best approach to handle transparent videos? Any help will be of great value to me.

I will learn more about python through Udacity and books online. After I learn python, what will I need to learn next to build a site? I want to build an interactive photo site. I will have to learn HTML. Do any of you know a good book or web site to learn HTML? I need to learn how to have python in HTML.   Hi, I really really want to find this package. Because after I saw the youtube clip I realized it's just one of those things I must have done before I die. This tutorial would be great if the repository were online. My question is: Where can I find the file, and how can I install it without changing my current desktop? The project was called "project looking glass" and was released in 2007. It is now an "inactive open source project", according to its Wikipedia article. @Takkat found this VERY good live cd, hope it works.

  I have the need to store random contents (on my local hard drive/ laptop hard drive) for personal use so I can look these contents up later on when I need them. What I mean by random content is one of the following: Some sort of code Random fact Css / html / Javascript tips Or anything I might find interesting and want to keep for future reference I want to look up these entries by tags, the software should give me the ability to associate every entry with one tag or more. I have been having difficult time find applications offer this functionality, it is like a local database with search ability and easy data-entry methods. I can build one, but I don't have the time to invest in doing so. Can you refer me to any application/software that can do that, it would be great. It does not matter if it is paid or free.

• brother MFC-J435W wireless scanning issue

  Thanks for taking the time to read this. I have a brother MFC-J435W and I was able to get the printer set up for wireless printing, but it is not allowing me to scan wirelessly. It gives me the message to "check connection". I'll tell you what I've done so far and maybe someone can help me out. I've installed the scanner driver and scan tool I installed Xsane (to see if it would allow the scanner to communicate with the computer and that didn't help). I've tried restarting the computer. After those things I am now at a loss as to where to go from here. Any help would be great. Thanks. I've also searched for this question in the Brother FAQ as well as on here and I haven't found an answer. Thanks again.

Now, to get to the point; a coworker said to me that he won't come with me because Devday London is expensive, and something expensive should reward you with a certificate, a certificate that could have some value to the eyes on an employer. Is he right? Do you think that attenting to this kind of event have some value on a resume? Should it be highlighted? Does it have any value for a future employer?

• Brightness control not working on HP Pavilion dm3t (Intel GMA 4500MHD)

  Hey all, I picked up an hp dm3t laptop with intel HD graphics and installed ubuntu 10.10 64 bit on it. It works great -- the only problem is that the brightness controls on the keyboard don't work. The brightness is always at full. When I try to adjust it down, the indicator graphic indicates that it's going down but the actual brightness doesn't change. Is there anything that I can try to make this work? I'd really appreciate any help. I asked this on superuser.com and someone commented that I should play around with the intel hd drivers. I'm a total noob -- how do I do that? What else can I try? I really don't want to go back to windows.

• XUbuntu: Open file browser via "run command" menu

  In older Xubuntu versions, if I entered a path to a directory in the "run command" dialog, a thunar-window was opened showing this directory. I found that to be very handy if I would open f.e.g "/tmp", I just needed to press WindowsKey+r, enter /tmp and press enter, there I was. This was also great for URLs (ftp, http etc) Unfortunately, since 12.04, this doesn't work anymore. It seem as if the "run command" is now integrated with the program finder. It still works when I type "thunar ftp://...." or "thunar /tmp", but it's a bit tedious now. Is there a way to restore the old behavior? Note: I'm running a german localization of Xubuntu - I hope I translated "run command" and "program finder" correctly...

  We are running more than 600 Ubuntu systems in our company. It is a data centre so we have certain policies. We have disabled the usage of storage devices in all the Ubuntu systems. However we would like to configure email alerts. If someone inserts storage devices, we should get an email Alert with subject as below, Email Alert: STORAGE DEVICE FOUND on IP: 172.29.35.18 Note: Where as for Windows system, we have certain policies applied in our DC. So there is no problem with Windows system. We need to receive alerts for Ubuntu system also. Any way to accomplish the above task would be great.

Here's the basics: We've released a press release through PRMac that included a video review. Submitted and followed up on all the big iOS review sites. None of them replied back with interest. A lot of them just told me that their editors are volunteers who will review games that are "interesting to their readers" and that they would put my app "into consideration" The only site that reviewed our app and promoted virally was iPhoneAppReview.com which we paid. We promoted on the top iOS forums We are now doing in-app advertising through inMobi and are integrating the SDK code into our app to start doing Tapjoy We posted up our gameplay videos on YouTube Any marketing strategies that anyone can suggest or recommend that we haven't used yet?   Hi, I'm interested in eventually programming for a financial company. Unfortunately, I have a degree in linguistics with a minor in CS along with 4 years experience in .NET. I picked .NET because I thought that it would be more used in the financial world. I've heard some horror stories about badly done VBA Excel programming and being way underpaid...but then I've heard great stories about highly skilled C++ programming along with high pay (including some feedback to previous questions). I just get the impression that unless you have a MS in CS from a top 10/20 school, it might not be realistic. For those of you doing programming for bankers/traders, how did you break in?

  I was wondering if there is a Application where you can organize networks. I mean if you have installed some networks you have to note every pc's name, his ip-address and so on. Is there a Application where you can manage it? I saw the monitoring tools but that is not exactly what I'm looking for. Maybe I didnt explain me well, after all my englis his not so good :) For example if I install many different networks I write in a book how I configured them. I write pc-name ip-address ip-gateway ip-broadcast and so on for each network. • NDIS Driver Filter VS API Hooking

  I've seen many developers asking for "How to intercept in/out HTTP packets ", "How to modify them on the fly". The most "clean" answer I've seen is to make a kernel-mode-driver filter from the scratch (TDI for XP and earlier winx9 or NDIS for NT systems). An other way, is to use a user-mode-driver like Windivert, also Komodia has a great solution (without writing any single code). The idea behind this introduction is just I want to know is API Hooking can be considered as alternative of writing of whole of driver-filter? writing a driver from the scratch is not an easy task, why just not Hooking the HttpSendRequest or any other API used by the browser? There are many free/commercial libraries to do this in a safe manner (eg: EasyHook, Mhook, Nektra..). I'm not the first who ask, there already Sockscap that uses Hook(DLL injection) to change behavior to other applications and force them to use a Socks proxy, also Form grabbing attack 'used by keylogger..

• Is premature optimization really the root of all evil?

  A colleague of mine today committed a class called ThreadLocalFormat, which basically moved instances of Java Format classes into a thread local, since they are not thread safe and "relatively expensive" to create. I wrote a quick test and calculated that I could create 200,000 instances a second, asked him was he creating that many, to which he answered "nowhere near that many". He's a great programmer and everyone on the team is highly skilled so we have no problem understanding the resulting code, but it was clearly a case of optimizing where there is no real need. He backed the code out at my request. What do you think? Is this a case of "premature optimization" and how bad is it really?
