  I have an API which looks like /summary/yyyy/mm Which returns the summary of their data for the year and month requested. One of the things it returns the number of days left if this is current year and month. For example: days_left: 9 for 2013 and 10 and current date on server is 21 Oct 2013 How I calculate remaining days? This is implemented in python as def current_financial_month_details(self): time_from, time_to = self \ .get_start_end_time_current_financial_month() today = datetime.today() from_time = datetime(year=today.year, month=today.month, day=today.day) return { 'time_from': time_from, 'time_to': time_to, 'remaining_days': (time_to - from_time).days } The problem? The server is in east coast and the client(me with browser) is on pacific time zone When its 9PM PST the time changes in east coast, so if I run hit /summary/2013/10 and if it is Oct 21 2013 for me on PST, the date has already changed on EST, so days_left: 8 which is incorrect on client end. right? How do I handle this situation?

• Shared WCF client code between .NET and Silverlight apps?

  I'm developing a .NET application that will have both a WinForms and a Silverlight client. Although the majority of code will be in the server, I'll need to have quite a bit of logic in the clients as well, and I would like to keep the client library code the same. From what I could figure out so far, I need to have two different project types, a class library and a Silverlight class library, and link the files from one project to the other. This seems kind of lame, but it works for simple code. My problem, though, is that the code generated by the SVCUtil.exe to access WCF services is different from the code generated by the slsvcutil.exe, and the silverlight code is actually incompatible with the .NET one: I get a bunch of problems with the System.ServiceModel.Channel classes when I try to import the class into .NET. Has anybody done anything similar to this before? What am I doing wrong?

(I am the page creator/admin) Please don't just give an answer "add the box to the page". Cause I really don't know how.   we have implemented the code for installing the messenger theme pack using the client side scripting in a web page. We are creating an object of the messenger using the classid .Using this object we call the installcontent() method and try to install the messenger theme pack hosted at following path: http://www.messengerexpressions.com/assets/worldCup/cabs/en-gb.cab Our code initially checks whether the messenger is installed on the user machine or not. Then it checks for the user login ,once the messenger is installed on the machine. And if the user is signed-in , the messenger theme pack is installed. The code currently when hosted on IIS checks the “Sign-In of the user” but when it tries to install the theme pack an error is thrown “An ActiveX control on this page is unsafe.Your current security settings prohibit running unsafe control on this page.As a result,this page may not be display as intended.” Please let us know if any setting is required on IIS for running this piece of codeor anything that we are missing out.

• Can you use Javascript to detect a file download window created server side?

  I have a jQuery plugin I use to dynamically create and render a form on a default.aspx asp.net page, then submit it. The page it gets submitted to is a pdf.aspx page. The page builds a PDF then uses Response.Write to write the file (application/pdf) to the browser. I use the same method to render XLSX files to the browser as well. It works really great, but I need a callback or some event to tell the button when to stop spinning. This prevents the user from continuously clicking the Excel or PDF buttons. Does anyone know a way to detect the file dialog window when it was not created using javascript? I am also open to other methods of callback from the server side as well.

  Hi, We are presently working for a client who is new to working with distributed teams. We have teams spread across India and the UK. Although we have decent project tracking tools (Mingle), would it be a good idea to the give the PM at the client access to our git hub repo. Would this be make it easier for them (see what the devs are working on and an insight into what the team has been developing). I agree that noot all commit messages would make sense to them but would this be a good way to boost their confidence in what we are doing? They already can check out our fortnightly releases on our QA and UA environments, but this still is behind dev by 5-6 days. Also, is there any reporting for git hub which makes it easier for PM types to make sense of it all? Thanks

I'm delivering a site to a client and I want to send them high-quality HTML/CSS/JS, fully validated, accessible etc. So I'm compiling a list of things to check, and useful tools for doing so, before I hand the code over. Here's a partial list, but what am I missing? Link checking for any broken links I might have missed - W3C link checker HTML validation for accessibility and broken-ness - W3C HTML validator CSS validation - W3C CSS validator Check for slow-loading page elements - Firebug and YSlow plugin What's missing - if you were a client, what else would you want to be sure has been checked?   I thought by placing these two lines that it would prevent the page from being cached but this is not the case between the head tags: <meta http-equiv="pragma" content="no-cache" /> <meta http-equiv="cache-control" content="no-cache" /> As already mentioned this is on server that doesn't support PHP (or any server side language, well, that's not true, it has cgi-bin folder that supports perl scripts but I don't know perl and have no time to engage in it.) What else could I do to prevent the page from caching? It caches on Firefox and IE (and not so much in Chrome or Safari.)

• Make graphics on left and right side of text change width depending on the amount of text?

  I need to have an H1 tag centered between two graphics on the left and right of the text. The H1 text will be various widths depending on what page you are on. The dot on the left should stay on the left edge of the site and the line should extend until it reaches the edge of the text. Same for the right side. Is there a way to accomplish this by using CSS or even some jquery/javascript? In the attached graphic, if the text was just "WHO YOU ARE" I'd need the bars on the left and right to grow wider to bump up against the edges of the text.

  Simple problem I have so far always solved via PHP: You have a site with header, menu, footer and content field. Header, menu and footer are usually the same for each page. How do you, without PHP or any other server-side language, have the header, menu and footer data exist only in one file? So that for example you don't have ten sites (like home.html, products.html, about.html, ..) all having a copy of the static header and menu in their html files. Now if you want to change the header you have to change ten files. I hope I made my question clear enough, if not please leave a comment :)

  Thanks for any help I have a web application, and the submit uses the PostBackUrl to display data if the form is valid. I need to use different (server side) validation groups, depending on what radiobutton is selected. That is, manually call Page.Validate('ValidationGroupA'). The validation itself is working fine, in terms of Page.IsValid correctly assigned true or false. however, if the page is not valid, the page redirects to the page specified by PostBackUrl on the submit button, where the page is found not to be valid, and the client redirected back with: if (!PreviousPage.IsValid){Response.Redirect("DataEntryPage.aspx");}) However, by getting to here and back again, all form data is lost, and the relevant validation controls and summaries are not displayed. is there an equivalent of javascripts evt.preventDefault() or some other way, once it is detected validation has failed after a manual call to Page.Validate to post the form back with appropriate validation errors displayed?   Preface I'm building a virtualization environment with Ubuntu 14.04 and LXC. I don't want to write my own template since the upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04 has shown that backwards compatibility is not guaranteed. Therefore I'm deploying my virtual machines via lxc-create, using the default Ubuntu template. The DNS for the servers is provided by Amazon Route 53, so no local DNS server is needed. I also use Puppet to configure my servers, so I want to keep the manual effort on the deployment minimal. Now, the default Ubuntu template assigns IP addresses via DHCP. Therefore, I need a local DHCP server to assign IP addresses to the nodes, so I can SSH into them and get Puppet running. Since Puppet requires a proper DNS setup, assigning temporary IP addresses is not an option, the client needs to get the right hostname and IP address from the start. Question What DHCP server do I use and how do I get it to assign the IP address based only on the host-name DHCP option by performing a DNS lookup on that very host name? What I've tried I tried to make it work using the ISC DHCP server, however, the manual clearly states: Please be aware that only the dhcp-client-identifier option and the hardware address can be used to match a host declaration, or the host-identifier option parameter for DHCPv6 servers. For example, it is not possible to match a host declaration to a host-name option. This is because the host-name option cannot be guaranteed to be unique for any given client, whereas both the hardware address and dhcp-client-identifier option are at least theoretically guaranteed to be unique to a given client. I also tried to create a class that matches the hostname like this: class "my-client-name" { match if option host-name = "my-client-name"; fixed-address my-client-name.my-domain.com; } Unfortunately the fixed-address option is not allowed in class statements. I can replace it with a 1-size pool, which works as expected: subnet 10.103.0.0 netmask 255.255.0.0 { option routers 10.103.1.1; class "my-client-name" { match if option host-name = "my-client-name"; } pool { allow members of "my-client-name"; range 10.103.1.2 10.103.1.2; } } However, this would require me to administer the IP addresses in two places (Amazon Route53 and the DHCP server), which I would prefer not to do. About security Since this is only used in the bootstrapping phase on an internal network and is then replaced by a static network configuration by Puppet, this shouldn't be an issue from a security standpoint. I am, however, aware that the virtual machine bootstraps with "ubuntu:ubuntu" credentials, which I intend to fix once this is running.

• With a browser, how do I know which decimal separator does the client use?

  I'm developing a web application. I need to display some decimal data correctly so that it can be copied and pasted into a certain GUI application that is not under my control. The GUI application is locale sensitive and it accepts only the correct decimal separator which is set in the system. I can guess the decimal separator from Accept-Language and the guess will be correct in 95% cases, but sometimes it fails. Is there any way to do it on server side (preferably, so that I can collect statistics), or on client side? Update: The whole point of the task is doing it automatically. In fact, this webapp is a kind of online interface to a legacy GUI which helps to fill the forms correctly. The kind of users that use it mostly have no idea on what a decimal separator is. The Accept-Language solution is implemented and works, but I'd like to improve it. Update2: I need to retrive a very specific setting: decimal separator set in Control Panel / Regional and Language Options / Regional Options / Customize. I deal with four kinds of operating systems: Russian Windows with a comma as a DS (80%). English Windows with a period as a DS (15%). Russian Windows with a period as a DS to make poorly written English applications work (4%). English Windows with a comma as a DS to make poorly written Russian applications work (1%). All 100% of clients are in Russia and the legacy application deals with Russian goverment-issued forms, so asking for a country will yield 100% of Russian Federation, and GeoIP will yield 80% of Russian Federation and 20% of other, incorrect answers.

• How to design authentication in a thick client, to be fail safe?

  Here's a use case: I have a desktop application (built using Eclipse RCP) which on start, pops open a dialog box with 'UserName' and 'Password' fields in it. Once the end user, inputs his UserName and Password, a server is contacted (a spring remote-servlet, with the client side being a spring httpclient: similar to the approaches here.), and authentication is performed on the server side. A few questions related to the above mentioned scenario: If said this authentication service were to go down, what would be the best way to handle further proceedings? Authentication is something that I cannot do away with. Would running the desktop client in a "limited" mode be a good idea? For instance, important features/menus/views will be disabled, rest of the application will be accessible? Should I have a back up authentication service running on a different machine, working as a backup? What are the general best-practices in this scenario? I remember reading about google gears and how it would let you edit and do stuff offline - should something like this be designed? Please let me know your design/architectural comments/suggestions. Appreciate your help.

• Best way to do client/server validation in ASP.NET in 2010?

  First there was the ASP.NET validators and we used them... Then some people on the team did things manually in javascript... Then a bunch of jquery validation libraries came out... Then MVC2 came out with attributes as validators.. I work with apps that have alot of forms with alot of various validation (Some fields needs to be compared with other values in a DB so a postball/ajax call is required) .. Right now I have a mess of ASP.NET custom validators and functions that calculate on the server side as well. Can I get some opinions on the best tool/combination to approach this job that can create the smallest/most elegant code? Pure server side solution? AJAX/Jquery? A certain plugin for jquery? For example, I have 2 dates.. I want to make sure that the 1st date is less than the 2nd date... Are there jquery validators that encapsulate this? My feeling is if I can get jquery plugins to handle half the more basic validation for my that could cut my code in half.

  Hi everybody i have deployed office communication server 2007 R2 and communicator 2007 R2 and i made integration with Cisco Unified Communication Manager 7.1 in my network, i also use Remote Desktop Servers 2008 R2 for Thin Client Computers, now that i installed Cisco UC integration client for communicator 2007 R2 (Ver. 8.0.3) or Cisco UC integration client for Microsoft Lync that works fine on PCs but Not on Remote Desktop Servers. i have Three Remote Desktop Servers in a Farm with loadbalancing enabled. all other applications on these RDP servers works fine for 120 active users. some times when i start Cisco UC client on Remote Desktop servers i get the following error: "The Port Reguired for callbacks from Cisco unified client framework could not be read, please retry" i also found the folowing log so i think that may be the cause: 2011-01-05 08:24:21,489 [INFO ] [com.cisco.uc.ucsf.ProblemReportingTool.controller.SingleInstanceManager] [SingleInstanceManager.acquireMutex(0)] - • Hotmail Senders receiving NDR : "550-Please turn on SMTP Authentication in your mail client..."

  Recently, senders from Hotmail have begun to get the following NDR when trying to e-mail our domain. EDIT : Full NDR Message Action: failed Status: 5.5.0 Diagnostic-Code: smtp;550-Please turn on SMTP Authentication in your mail client, or login to the 550-IMAP/POP3 server before sending your message. 550-snt0-omc3-s36.snt0.hotmail.com [65.55.90.175]:49271 is not permitted to 550 relay through this server without authentication This is seemingly out of the blue and I'm at a loss as to why this is happening. Pertinent Information We have multiple domains hooked up to our Exchange server. We changed our company name in January of this year, and the old primary domain (olddomain.com) will accept e-mails from Hotmail accounts, however e-mails sent to the new primary domain (newdomain.com) bounce back with the NDR listed above. The bounces only appear to be happening when the Hotmail sender is sending a new e-mail, and not if they are responding to an e-mail sent from our end. We have made no changes to the configuration of our server recently. This e-mail first appeared last Friday. As far as I can tell, the mail doesn't even seem to get to our server We performed an Exchange 2003 to 2010 migration last year. • Group policy waited for the network subsystem

  In an AD domain with Windows Server 2008 R2 DCs users are complaining about delays in the bootup process of the clients. The group policy log reveals that the client is waiting ~ 20-50 seconds for "the network subsystem": Event 5322, GroupPolicy Group policy waited for 29687 milliseconds for the network subsystem at computer boot. This appears to be domain-specific as machines joining a different domain from the same network do not experience any delays and Event 5322 reports <1000 ms wait times at startup. It happens on virtual and physical machines alike, so it does not look like a hardware- or driver-related issue. Further investigation has shown that the client is taking its time before issuing DHCP requests. In the network traces, I can see IPv6 router solicitations and multicast DNS name registrations as soon as the network driver is loaded and the network connection is reported "up" in the event log (e1cexpress/36). Yet, the DHCPv4 client service seems to take another 15-50 seconds to start (Dhcp-Client/50036), so the IPv4 address remains unconfigured for a while. The DHCP client's messages in the event log are succeeding the service start of the "Sophos Anti-Virus" service (Sophos AV 10.3 package), which I suspect to be the culprit - the DHCP client service dependencies include the TDI Support driver which might be what Sophos is using to intercept network traffic: Network Location Awareness seems to break at startup as a side-effect, I see that off-site DCs are contacted due to what seems like a race condition between the GP client and the DHCP client / NLA service startup. I could set the Group Policy Client service to depend on NLA, yet this still would not eliminate the delay. Also, I am not all that sure that this is a good idea. Is there a known resolution which would eliminate the startup delay?
