• Should I catch exceptions thrown when closing java.sql.Connection

  Connection.close() may throw SqlException, but I have always assumed that it is safe to ignore any such exceptions (and I have never seen code that does not ignore them). Normally I would write: try{ connection.close(); }catch(Exception e) {} Or try{ connection.close(); }catch(Exception e) { logger.log(e.getMessage(), e); } The question is: Is it bad practice (and has anyone had problems when ignoring such exeptions). When Connection.close() does throw any exception. If it is bad how should I handle the exception. Comment: I know that discarding exceptions is evil, but I'm reffering only to exceptions thrown when closing a connection (and as I've seen this is fairly common in this case). Does anyone know when Connection.close() may throw anything?

• ForceAutoLogon Ignored in windows 7 when setting up Autologin - Autologon

  I am attempting to setup automatic logon for a windows 7 kiosk computer via the registry. I have set the values under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon like this: AutoAdminLogon = 1 ForceAutoLogon = 1 DisableCAD = 1 I have filled out the username and password fields. I have also deleted all EULA related values (a prerequisite of ForceAutoLogon) I have done this procedure on 2 computers. On computer A: When rebooting, we logon automatically. When logging out from the start menu, we logon automatically immediately after logging out. On computer B: When rebooting, we logon automatically. When logging out from the start menu, we are presented with a logon menu where the user needs to click a user name & then enter a password. It seems like the value of ForceAutoLogon requires some other prerequisite that is met on computer A, but not on computer B. What do I need to make computer B act like computer A when clicking the log off button from the windows start menu?

If you want to debug, with something like pdb (python -m pdb myscript.py), you want that when the exception occure PDB jump on it and you can start debuging. Because of that it's not possible.   This is weird. I have a class that inherits from IEnumrable whose Count property is reporting 0 (zero) elements but the For Each loop steps into the loop body and tries to use the variable where it should just be moving on. My code: On Error Resume Next Dim d As Foo For Each d In fooCollection ' use d and throws an exception Next d Weirder still, every time d is accessed i get an exception thrown in the output window: A first chance exception of type 'System.NullReferenceException' but i'm not stopping on the exception (not in a try/catch block). Is "On Error Resume Next" causing this weirdness? Weirdness found: Per Rowland's and JohnH's comments i checked the Foo class: The GetEnumerator method inside of Foo didn't actually return anything! It had an empty body. That coupled with the On Error Resume Next before the loop caused the havoc! Wow this was ugly. Thanks for the clues guys!

• Ruby TCPSocket doesn't notice it when server is killed

  I've this ruby code that connects to a TCP server (namely, netcat). It loops 20 times, and sends "ABCD ". If I kill netcat, it takes TWO iterations of the loop for an exception to be triggered. On the first loop after netcat is killed, no exception is triggered, and "send" reports that 5 bytes have been correctly written... Which in the end is not true, since of course the server never received them. Is there a way to work around this issue ?   Hi, On a webserver (shared hosting provider) I published a website with a ADO.Net Framework model in use with MySql Connector 6.3.1. When I request a page, a Security Exception will be happen with this error messages: "LinkDemand The type of the first permission that failed was: System.Security.Permissions.SecurityPermission The Zone of the assembly that failed was: MyComputer ". This exception raised when code collect the listeners of a tracksource: public class MySqlTrace { private static TraceSource source = new TraceSource("mysql"); static MySqlTrace() { foreach (TraceListener listener in source.Listeners) // <-- Exception throw here { // ... } } } The web.config doesn't have any trace data or system.diagnostics. My question is, why will a get a LinkDemand security exception during collecting the source listeners. What can maybe be wrong in here?

  The following throws an error stating Exception can no be redeclared. namespace \NYTD\ReadingListBackend; class Exception extends \Exception { } However, removing the \ prefix in the namespace declaration does not: namespace NYTD\ReadingListBackend; I recently adopted PHP namespaces. My understanding is that namespaces prefixed with \ are a fully qualified name. So why can't I use the prefix in the namespace declaration? I can when referencing (e.g. new \NYTD\ReadingListBackend\Exception). Would appreciate a full explanation as I couldn't find anything in the docs.

  I have a problem with nginx/logrotate. The problems is that nginx is logging access to 2 files (main and data). I have the following contrab setting: 0 * * * * /usr/sbin/logrotate -f /home/orwell/orwell-setup/bin/logrotate-nginx And the file "logrotate-nginx" has the following content: /tmp/data.log { rotate 90 daily missingok notifempty size 1 sharedscripts postrotate [ ! -f /tmp/nginx.pid ] || kill -USR1 `cat /tmp/nginx.pid` MORE THINGS endscript } /tmp/main.log { rotate 90 daily missingok notifempty size 1 sharedscripts postrotate [ ! -f /tmp/nginx.pid ] || kill -USR1 `cat /tmp/nginx.pid` MORE THINGS endscript } The work is done in the two files, but there is a problem that nginx stops logging into those files. Both files are created, but they are empty. Any ideas why nginx stop logging info to both files?

  We recently migrated to VS 2010. We installed .NET 4.0 on our test machine. When we execute a console application that throws an exception, we no longer see the exception message and stack trace printed to the console but instead see the message An unhandled win32 exception occurred in something.exe [PID]. Just-In-Time debugging this exception failed with the following error: No installed debugger has Just-In-Time debugging enabled. In Visual Studio, Just-In-Time debugging can be enabled from Tools/Options/Debugging/Just-In-Time. We do have the above setting enabled. What do we need to do to return to the behavior we had previously?

  So I've got this piece of code which, logically should work but Entity Framework is behaving unexpectedly. Here: foreach (SomeClass someobject in allObjects) { Supplier supplier = new Supplier(); supplier.primary_key = someobject.id; supplier.name = someobject.displayname; try { sm.Add(supplier); ro.Created++; } catch (Exception ex) { ro.Error++; } } Here's what I have in sm.Add() public Supplier Add(Supplier supplier) { try { _ctx.AddToSupplier(supplier); _ctx.SaveChanges(); return supplier; } catch (Exception ex) { throw; } } I can have records in allObjects that have the same id. My piece of code needs to support this and just move on to the next and try to insert it, which I think should work. If this happens, an exception is throw, saying that records with dupe PKs cannot be inserted (of course). The exception mentions the value of the PK, for example 1000. All is well, a new supplier is passed to sm.Add() containing a PK that's never been used before. (1001) Weirdly though, when doing SaveChanges(), EF will whine about not being able to insert records with dupe PKs. The exception still mentions 1000 even though supplier contains 10001 in primary_key. I feel this is me not using _ctx properly. Do I need to call something else to sync it ?

  I made an AJAX call and it works on FF & Chrome but not on IE 7-8-9. Edit 3: I solved the problem by myself: It seems like log4j is NOT completely thread-save. After synchronizing all log / trace methods using a separate object everything is working fine. Maybe the lib is writing the messages to a thread-unsafe buffer before writing them to file?
