  • MVVM Light V4.1 with support for Windows Phone 8

    Today is a very exciting day: After the official release of Windows 8 (and Microsoft Surface!) on Friday, and the official release of Windows Phone 8 on Monday, the Build conference is starting! This is the conference in which we will learn all about the developer experience for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. As a partner of Microsoft, I had the privilege of trying out some of the new things early, and this gave me the opportunity to port MVVM Light to Windows Phone 8 (it was already running for Windows 8), and today I am officially publishing this new version. Before you go and update, please not the following: V4.1 (4.1.24.0) only supports Visual Studio 2012 (and Express). If for some reason you are still using Visual Studio 2010, don’t despair! In the next few days I will publish an update supporting these versions as well. But for now, please only upgrade if you are on VS12! That being said, here we go: The download page is available on Codeplex and you can download the updated MSI and install it. Please make sure to read the Readme HTML page that automatically opens in your web browser after the MSI completes! It contains important information on how to install selected Project and Item templates for the frameworks of your choice. This version also support the following versions of Visual Studio: Visual Studio 2012 Pro, Premium, Ultimate Visual Studio 2012 Express for Windows 8 Visual Studio 2012 Express for Windows Phone 8 Visual Studio 2012 Express for Web (Silverlight 4, Silverlight 5) Visual Studio 2012 Express for Windows Desktop (WPF3.5, WPF4, WPF4.5) We also support Expression Blend of course. Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 are very very exciting opportunities for developers in the whole world.     I  was just pointed to comment on my friend Andrew Brust’s blog about Silverlight versus HTML 5. Well, my reaction is “hogwash”. Sure, HTML 5 is important and does some interesting stuff. Checkout what Bing.com is doing with it on some days and you can see. But to say that XAML is dead is nuts. I have been wrapping up bugs on a cross browser version of an application for awhile now. Whats the state of cross browser today? Well, better than a few years ago but far from perfect.  Each browser vendor interprets the specs in a little different way and you must account for them. The worst offender for major browsers? Apple and its Safari.  I had to make more changes for it than any other. Whats that got to do with XAML and SL/WPF?  Well, you write your SL code once and it runs in all browsers that support it, no changes. ipad does not? Well, they should be taken to court and forced too just like MS and others have been in the past for locking out competitors. Line of business applications? Write them in SL or WPF or both.  Use the power of XAML witch far out reaches html in any flavor and move on. We do need HTML 5 but its not a panacea nor will it replace all other technologies.

The reason is very simple: we feel that Birmingham needs a fresh start. We are both very passionate about .NET and are hoping to share our experiences with the community.   • Open Source Project all dressed up but nowhere to go...

    Over the past 2 years myself and a colleague have built an online statistical analysis application using a mixture of silverlight, wcf and R. I (a c# programmer) wrote all the silverlight and wcf stuff whilst my colleague (a statistician) came up with the stats algorithms and wrote the R code. Now we think that this app is fairly unique - a rich gui online statistics application that is much more intuitive than all the other online stat apps that I've seen. But despite this we don't really know where to go with the project, mainly for the following reasons: 1) Its fairly complicated stuff - without the mix of programing and stats skills it would be difficult for anyone to "get into" the project and contribute. 2) We are stalled by a lack of a proper place to host the site. Currently it sits on the family windows 7 media centre, not exactly the best place to host it as it could interfere with the missus trying to watch Corrie/Friends/Oprah etc. Soo, anyone got any ideas on how to move forward with this? I guess that my strength is programing not marketing so despite working hard at this for the past couple of years I feel that I've reached a dead end! Also, does anyone know of any free windows hosting for open source projects? If I could find a proper place to put the app I might feel re-energised about the whole thing. I have since been asked if I could post the source code for this demo, so here it is (I am using similar techniques in my Task-It application). The database Before running the code for this app you will need to create the database. First, create a database called MVVMProject in SQL Server, then run MVVMProject.sql in the MVVMProjectDemo/Database directory of your downloaded .zip file. This should give you a Task table with 3 records in it.   • permanently map a network drive osx leopard

    I want to have a mapped drive in OSX which points to my NAS - however I've found that I have to do it after every single reboot. I'm a mac noob, so would like to just have the drive mapped at all times like windows does, but instead each time I reboot and forget to map the drive, I accidentally open itunes and find no music as it's all stored on my NAS! is there a simple way of doing this? have I missed something really silly?

I've been asked to create a new user, but not give them an email address. I guess I could just disable their email account in Exchange, but is there a nicer method?

  • Sysadmin 101: How can I figure out why my server crashes and monitor performance?

    I have a Drupal-powered site that seems to have neverending performance problems. It was butt-slow about 5 months ago. I brought in some guys who installed nginx for anonymous visitors, ajaxified a few queries so they wouldn't fire during page load, and helped me find a few bottlenecks in the code. For about a month, the site was significantly faster, though not "fast" by any stretch of the word. Meanwhile, I'm now shelling out $400/month to Slicehost to host a site that gets less than 5,000/uniques a day. Yes, you read that right. Go Drupal. Recently the site started crashing again and is slow again. I can't afford to hire people to come in, study my code from top to bottom, and make changes that may or may not help anymore. And I can't afford to throw more hardware at the problem. So I need to figure out what the problem is myself. Questions: When apache crashes, is it possible to find out what caused it to crash? There has to be a way, right? If so, how can I do this? Is there software I can use that will tell me which process caused my server to die? (e.g. "Apache crashed because someone visited page X." or "Apache crashed because you were importing too many RSS items from feed X.") There's got to be a way to learn this, right? What's a good, noob-friendly way to monitor my current apache performance? My developer friends tell me to "just use Top, dude," but Top shows me a bunch of numbers without any context. I have no clue what qualifies as a bad number or a good number in Top, or which processes are relevant and which aren't. Are there any noob-friendly server monitoring tools out there? Ideally, I could have a page that would give me a color-coded indicator about how apache is performing and then show me a list of processes or pages that are sucking right now. This way, I could know when performance is bad and then what's causing it to be so bad. Why does PHP memory matter? My apparently has a 30MB memory foot print. Will it run faster if I bring that number down? Thanks for any advice. I spent a year or so trying to boost my advertising income so I could hire a contractor to solve my performance woes. I didn't want to have to learn all this sysadmin voodoo. I'm now resigned to the fact that might not have a choice.

  • Photoshop CS4 - PSD files - cant see the contents

    I am opening up a photoshop psd file in CS4 to edit. When I open the file, the window shows just a grey background and no content. If I click/drag the window, then I CAN see the contents, but when I drop the window, it goes back to a grey background. Any suggestions. (Yes, I'm a PhotoShop noob ...) Thanks

    Do web proxies really provide anonymity? I mean, without someone asking for logs in a web proxy server for who/when connected, is it impossible to know who was behind that IP address? I'm asking this because I heard somewhere that some technologies (like "flash") bypass personal IP information for requests or something like that. (I'm a noob in server configuration and concepts like DNS and proxies. Thanks!)

  • unable to display anything other than directory listing

    Okay i have what may seem a really easy to solve problem but i've been trying to solve it for days. I'm trying to deploy a asp.net MVC2 application to a IIS 5.1 server running Windows XP Pro. (it's actually the default MVC2 app) However when i deploy, the only thing i'm able to see is a Directory listing. I tried a lot of stuff but can't get it to display anything other than the directory listing. hopefully i'm just a noob who forgot to add something, thanks for your answer :)

  • cat on Mac OS X never exits

    I'm a bit of a UNIX noob, but I'm trying to run the cat command to make a simple text file and it works great, however cat is never exited after making the file. For instance, I type cat ~/mytextfile.txt and hit enter, the file is created but my cursor remains on a blank line.

So will it run without any problems or i need to upgrade the video cards or something too ? The computer is not that much old it has P4 bord and celeron processor with 128 graphics memory . And in properties it shows i can maximum use 1280 x 1024 resolution. I am noob hardware wise So need help on this stuff. Thanks

  • Squid vs mod_proxy (apache)

    Hi, New to servers, been hovering on http://highscalability.com/ for some days. Most of the architectures there show that people are using squid for proxy. Apache also provided mod_proxy which to a noob eye seems pretty much the same. Is there a perticular reason to opt for squid instead of mod_proxy? Thanks
