  • Looking for an algorithm that will show how to fit the most boxes in a container.

    - by Abe Miessler
I've been interested in writing an application that will show how to fit boxes (of random dimensions) in a container so there is as little space as possible left. A real life example would be something that would tell you how to use the most space in a UPS truck. Does anyone know of a good place to start for something like this? Is there an existing algorithm that does something similar to what I'm talking about?

  • Batch file that returns folder size

    - by Paul Wall
Hi, I'm having space issues on my Vista machine and need to figure out what's taking up so much space. I would like to write a simple batch file that returns all folders under C: and the size of each folder. The dir command doesn't appear to return folder size. Unfortunately we don't have admin rights and can't install a third party application and we have other users in our group that also need this information. Thanks...

  • Dev environment - Cubicles or pods?

    - by jon
We're reorganizing our workspaces at work, and are individually being given the choice of working in a more open space with a few other developers, or a more closed off space by ourselves. Which should I choose?

  • Timer a usage in msp430 in high compiler optimization mode

    - by Vishal
Hi, I have used timer A in MSP430 with high compiler optimization, but found that my timer code is failing when high compiler optimization used. When none optimization is used code works fine. This code is used to achieve 1 ms timer tick. timeOutCNT is increamented in interrupt. Following is the code, //Disable interrupt and clear CCR0 TIMER_A_TACTL = TIMER_A_TASSEL | // set the clock source as SMCLK TIMER_A_ID | // set the divider to 8 TACLR | // clear the timer MC_1; // continuous mode TIMER_A_TACTL &= ~TIMER_A_TAIE; // timer interrupt disabled TIMER_A_TACTL &= 0; // timer interrupt flag disabled CCTL0 = CCIE; // CCR0 interrupt enabled CCR0 = 500; TIMER_A_TACTL &= TIMER_A_TAIE; //enable timer interrupt TIMER_A_TACTL &= TIMER_A_TAIFG; //enable timer interrupt TACTL = TIMER_A_TASSEL + MC_1 + ID_3; // SMCLK, upmode timeOutCNT = 0; //timeOutCNT is increased in timer interrupt while(timeOutCNT <= 1); //delay of 1 milisecond TIMER_A_TACTL = TIMER_A_TASSEL | // set the clock source as SMCLK TIMER_A_ID | // set the divider to 8 TACLR | // clear the timer MC_1; // continuous mode TIMER_A_TACTL &= ~TIMER_A_TAIE; // timer interrupt disabled TIMER_A_TACTL &= 0x00; // timer interrupt flag disabled Can anybody help me here to resolve this issue? Is there any other way we can use timer A so it works fine in optimization modes? Or do I have used is wrongly to achieve 1 ms interrupt? Thanks in advanced. Vishal N

  • Programmatically get screenshot of page

    - by Ender
I'm writing a specialized crawler and parser for internal use and I require the ability to take a screenshot of a web page in order to check what colours are being used throughout. The program will take in around ten web addresses and will save them as a bitmap image, from there I plan to use LockBits in order to create a list of the five most used colours within the image. To my knowledge it's the easiest way to get the colours used within a web page but if there is an easier way to do it please chime in with your suggestions. Anyway, I was going to use this program until I saw the price tag. I'm also fairly new to C#, having only used it for a few months. Can anyone provide me with a solution to my problem of taking a screenshot of a web page in order to extract the colour scheme?

  • C# - How do find a string within a string even if it spans across whitespace?

    - by James Heaney
I want to be able to find and highlight a string within a string BUT I no not want to remove the space. So if my original string is : There are 12 monkeys I want to find '12 mon' and highlight those characters ending up with : There are < font color='red' 12 mon< /font keys BUT I also want the same result if I search for '12mon' (no space this time) This has really bent my mind! I'm sure it can be done with Regex.

  • What's the best way to read a UDT from a database with Java?

    - by Lukas Eder
I thought I knew everything about UDTs and JDBC until someone on SO pointed out some details of the Javadoc of java.sql.SQLInput and java.sql.SQLData JavaDoc to me. The essence of that hint was (from SQLInput): An input stream that contains a stream of values representing an instance of an SQL structured type or an SQL distinct type. This interface, used only for custom mapping, is used by the driver behind the scenes, and a programmer never directly invokes SQLInput methods. This is quite the opposite of what I am used to do (which is also used and stable in productive systems, when used with the Oracle JDBC driver): Implement SQLData and provide this implementation in a custom mapping to ResultSet.getObject(int index, Map mapping) The JDBC driver will then call-back on my custom type using the SQLData.readSQL(SQLInput stream, String typeName) method. I implement this method and read each field from the SQLInput stream. In the end, getObject() will return a correctly initialised instance of my SQLData implementation holding all data from the UDT. To me, this seems like the perfect way to implement such a custom mapping. Good reasons for going this way: I can use the standard API, instead of using vendor-specific classes such as oracle.sql.STRUCT, etc. I can generate source code from my UDTs, with appropriate getters/setters and other properties My questions: What do you think about my approach, implementing SQLData? Is it viable, even if the Javadoc states otherwise? What other ways of reading UDT's in Java do you know of? E.g. what does Spring do? what does Hibernate do? What does JPA do? What do you do? Addendum: UDT support and integration with stored procedures is one of the major features of jOOQ. jOOQ aims at hiding the more complex "JDBC facts" from client code, without hiding the underlying database architecture. If you have similar questions like the above, jOOQ might provide an answer to you.

  • Hosting a database?

    - by user296516
Hi, I was kinda puzzled by seeing that most hosting plans do offer, say, 12.000 MB disk space and 60 MB Database space... what is the difference between this two and what do I do if I need like a few gigs for a database and only some tens of MB for the rest of the site?

  • The unmentioned parts of COBOL's history

    - by be nice to me.
I'm very curious about old programming languages, especially COBOL, and as Wikipedia couldn't really tell me much about this topic, I decided to ask it here: Was COBOL the first programming language really being used in financial, stock and banking systems? Where exactly was COBOL used? Was it used more frequently than Fortran or BASIC, for example? I don't know if you lived at that time, but how did people react to the rising COBOL? Did they expect it to be the future? When has COBOL actually stopped being used to create new, big systems? Are you sure that there are still important legacy apps written in COBOL out there? I can't believe that somehow.

  • How can I tell if AUCTeX is available?

    - by Simon Wright
I have a package which has various features that depend on AUCTeX. As it stands, it requires hand-configuration: (defvar AucTeX-used nil) (if AucTeX-used (progn (require 'tex-site) (require 'latex)) (require 'latex-mode) (setq TeX-command-list nil)) Is there a way to find out whether AUCTeX is available on the machine, to avoid having to set AucTeX-Used by hand? (I'm using GNU Emacs 23.1.1 for Max OS X).

  • Behavior Tree Implementations

    - by Hamza Yerlikaya
I am looking for behavior tree implementations in any language, I would like to learn more about how they are implemented and used so can roll my own but I could only find one Owyl, unfortunately, it does not contain examples of how it is used. Any one know any other open source ones that I can browse through the code see some examples of how they are used etc? EDIT: Behavior tree is the name of the data structure.
