  • How can I find the boundaries of a subset of a sorted list?

    I have the following dilemma: I have a list of strings, and I want to find the set of string which start with a certain prefix. The list is sorted, so the naive solution is this: Perform binary search on the prefixes of the set, and when you find an element that starts with the prefix, traverse up linearly until you hit the top of the subset. This runs in linear time, however, and I was wondering if anyone can suggest a more efficient way to do it.

    is there a way to load the full binary of an image in javascript? what i want to do is to allow the user to preview an image before uploading it. ie the user selects an image on his local drive (C:\image.jpg) , view it, and decides to upload or cancel. i tried to set the source to the image path, but it didn't work since it is outside the webapplication project folder. any help?

  • Using rowDiffs() to calculate difference in values in matrix

    I'm using the rowDiffs() command to calculate the step by step difference in 116 rows in a matrix. I get the following error: Error in r[i1] - r[-length(r):-(length(r) - lag + 1L)] : non-numeric argument to binary operator I have no idea why this is happening. The binary itself can check for syntax errors, but I'm looking for something that does more, like unused variable assignments, arrays that are assigned into without being initialized first, and possibly code style warnings. Open-source programs would be preferred, but we might convince the company to pay for something if it's highly recommended.

    I'm probably doing this completely wrong (the unhaskell way); I'm just learning so please let me know if there's a better way to approach this. Context: I'm writing a bunch of tree structures. I want to reuse my prettyprint function for binary trees. Not all trees can use the generic Node/Branch data type though; different trees need different extra data. So to reuse the prettyprint function I thought of creating a class different trees would be instances of: class GenericBinaryTree a where is_leaf :: a -> Bool left :: a -> a node :: a -> b right :: a -> a This way they only have to implement methods to retrieve the left, right, and current node value, and prettyprint doesn't need to know about the internal structure. In an object oriented language I could easily check whether a class implements something, or if an object has a method. I can't use something like prettyprint :: Show a => a -> String Because it's not the tree that needs to be showable, it's the value inside the tree (returned by function node) that needs to be showable. I also tried changing node to Show b => a -> b without luck (and a bunch of other type class/preconditions/whatever/I don't even know what I'm doing anymore).

  • User Profile cannot be loaded - Windows 7

    After uninstalling an HP Vector Mouse driver, then rebooting, when Windows tries to auto log me in, i get an error message saying tyhe following: The User Profile Service failed the Login. User Profile cannot be loaded. Due to the fact that it is the only account on this PC, I cannot even go into another account. I rebooted the machine several times, before going into Safe Mode with Networking. For some reason, I cannot create a new account whilst in safe mode (I think it is to do with UAC, nothing with UAC is clickable). Thus, I am stuck. I cannot get into my account, nor can I create a new one to copy files over to. Any ideas? Thanks in advance! Ryan EDIT: System Restore was, for some reason turned off. Thus, I cannot restore to a working point.

  • Windows Backup fails with 0x80070002: "The system cannot find the file specified"

    Windows 7 Backup is failing. When backing up even a single insignificant directory (e.g. I chose only the empty "Contacts" directory, leaving all other directories unchecked), I get this error within a few seconds and the backup fails. If I uncheck all files/directories, and just do the system image - then the system image is backed up OK without issue. Backup destination is an external USB hard drive. Steps to reproduce and subsequent failure: Set up backup to go to external hard drive. Don't back up system image. Back up "Contacts" directory only for my profile. Start backup. Immediately view the status of the backup, it stays on "Creating a shadow copy..." for a few seconds, and then the backup fails. Click Options button, and it says "Check your backup / The system cannot find the file specified." - with options to "Try to run backup again" or "Change backup settings". If I click "Show Details", then it says: Backup time: 4/12/2012 04:38 Backup location: My Book (D:) Error code: 0x80070002 An examination of the Event Log shows nothing useful beyond the following: Log Name: Application Source: Windows Backup Date: 4/12/2012 04:38:44 Event ID: 4104 Task Category: None Level: Error Keywords: Classic User: N/A Computer: JTJLaptop Description: The backup was not successful. I'm stumped; WHAT file can't be found and why is my backup failing? This is on a Lenovo T420 laptop.

This is what I have so far: iptables (for gen. packet filtering) fail2ban (brute force attack defense) ssh (chang default, port disable root access) modsecurity - is really clumsy and a pain (any alternative here?) ?Sudo why should I use it? what is the advantage to normal user handling thinking about greensql for mysql www.greensql.net is tripwire worth looking at? snort?   • Linux Programs for pulling measurements from graphics

    As a front-end developer, I'm often given graphics of web sites and told pretty much, "Make it work." I've recently started working on Linux 100% of the time and was wondering if there's any programs out there that're good for "digesting" graphics. All I do, pretty much, is draw little selection boxes and takes notes on their dimensions; I also slice out a piece of the graphic (i.e. copy out just the part of the graphic I need for to make the same effect in CSS). Before now I've been very happy with Fireworks, but I need something for Linux, any suggestions? As a note, I mainly deal with pixel based graphics, so the program being vector based isn't a necessity.

  • MySQL Memory usage

    Our MySQL server seems to be using a lot of memory. I've tried looking for slow queries and queries with no index and have halved the peak CPU usage and Apache memory usage but the MySQL memory stays constantly at 2.2GB (~51% of available memory on the server). Here's the graph from Plesk. Running top in the SSH window shows the same figures. Does anyone have any ideas on why the memory usage is constant like this and not peaks and troughs with usage of the app?     Hello, I am using Linux. I want to convert an eps file to jpeg file. I find that I can use "convert" command. However, the resulting image looks very small. I want to enlarge the jpeg file by -resize option. It seems not to work. The resulting image is a pure black one. Do anyone has the same problem? Here are more details: 1: if I use convert -scale 1000x1000 your.eps your.jpg the resulting image looks like a low quality image. The eps vector image is not scaled properly. 2: if I use convert -geometry 300% your.eps your.jpg I get a pure black image.   • How do I get Windows 7 wallpaper to display the company logo properly?

    Windows 7 is not displaying our company background properly. Curves show pixelation and straight lines are jagged. I'm working with a scalable vector graphics (SVG) image that I've exported to the same resolution (pixel dimensions, to be technical) as the desktop, which is 1440x900. I have tried exporting the image as a .png, .jpg, and .bmp. All of these look correct in an image viewing program, such as Windows Photo Viewer and Paint, but when I set the Windows background to these images, curves show pixelation and straight lines are jagged. Reading online, it seems that behind the scenes, Windows is converting the image to a .jpg with low quality compression, which is causing the issue. I've tried setting the image as a background through Internet Explorer, saving it as a .jpg, and putting the file in the Windows photo directory as suggested in some online forums, but none of those solutions have fixed my issue.

Several years ago I tested some of commercial and free PDF printers and found none, with except to Acrobat Distiller, which embeds in the generated PDF file real PostScript content of the EPS image instead of the preview showed by Word. Has the situation changed from that time? Do you know any free or commercial PDF printer which handles embedded EPS correctly?   • FTP Upload works from local command line / remote GUI client but not from PHP script

    I originally posted this question at StackOverflow, but I'm beginning to think it's more of a server question. I have installed ProFTPd on an EC2 instance running Ubuntu 10.10. I have managed my proftpd.conf file as well as my server permissions to be able to connect and upload/move files using FTP both remotely using Filezilla, and on the server itself when connecting to 127.0.0.1. The problem I'm running into is when I try to upload/install a file using Joomla's interface. I give Joomla the same login information that I give to Filezilla, and the connection is made in the same fashion.   • Building new GIS Workstation - is it worth upgrading to a workstation GPU?

    We are currently building a machine from scratch to act as a GIS workstation. The primary software used is ESRI's ArcGIS and we are mainly working with vector data using raster data only for contextual background imagery. In the past I have built a GIS machine and used a consumer grade gaming GPU (Nvidia 9800GT) and found it to perform fine. However, I have always wondered if I would have been better off equipping it with a workstation GPU such as a Quadro series. Would a workstation GPU make a noticeable difference doing 2D GIS operations or should I save money on the build and equip it with another 9800GT?
