  • What are the differences between google app mail, and plain ol' [email protected] forwarding to gmail ac

    - by Chris Adams
I currently have an email address, [email protected], that I currently use to forward to a gmail account that I've used for years. I currently have it set, so I can send email from my [email protected] instead of [email protected]. This is done through the web ui on my current domain name, provider, gandi.net. What are the main differences between this arrangement, and setting up a Google Apps for your domain setup, where I'm explicitly listing in the dns records to point records to point to Google's app mail server?

  • Why is my amazon EC2 in asian pacific region having a US ip address?

    - by Turner
I recently give a free trial to amazon EC2 service, I created a free tier micro instance(AMI is windows server 2008) in the Asian Pacific(Tokyo) region, but when it's done the public DNS it provided is ec2-54-238-181-35.ap-northeast-1.compute.amazonaws.com. The corresponding IP is 54.238.181.35, which I think is in the U.S. I tried to allocate some more elastic IPs but all of them seem to have a U.S. origin. Anyone please help explain to me ?

  • OpenSSH does not accept public key?

    - by Bob
I've been trying to solve this for a while, but I'm admittedly quite stumped. I just started up a new server and was setting up OpenSSH to use key-based SSH logins, but I've run into quite a dilemma. All the guides are relatively similar, and I was following them closely (despite having done this once before). I triple checked my work to see if I would notice some obvious screw up - but nothing is apparent. As far as I can tell, I haven't done anything wrong (and I've checked very closely). If it's any help, on my end I'm using Cygwin and the server is running Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS. Anyways, here is the output (I've removed/censored some parts for privacy (primarily anything with my name, website, or its IP address), but I can assure you that nothing is wrong there): $ ssh user@host -v OpenSSH_5.9p1, OpenSSL 0.9.8r 8 Feb 2011 debug1: Connecting to host [ipaddress] port 22. debug1: Connection established. debug1: identity file /home/user/.ssh/id_rsa type 1 debug1: identity file /home/user/.ssh/id_rsa-cert type -1 debug1: identity file /home/user/.ssh/id_dsa type -1 debug1: identity file /home/user/.ssh/id_dsa-cert type -1 debug1: identity file /home/user/.ssh/id_ecdsa type -1 debug1: identity file /home/user/.ssh/id_ecdsa-cert type -1 debug1: Remote protocol version 2.0, remote software version OpenSSH_5.9p1 Debian-5ubuntu1 debug1: match: OpenSSH_5.9p1 Debian-5ubuntu1 pat OpenSSH* debug1: Enabling compatibility mode for protocol 2.0 debug1: Local version string SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_5.9 debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEXINIT sent debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEXINIT received debug1: kex: server->client aes128-ctr hmac-md5 none debug1: kex: client->server aes128-ctr hmac-md5 none debug1: sending SSH2_MSG_KEX_ECDH_INIT debug1: expecting SSH2_MSG_KEX_ECDH_REPLY debug1: Server host key: ECDSA 24:68:c3:d8:13:f8:61:94:f2:95:34:d1:e2:6d:e7:d7 debug1: Host 'host' is known and matches the ECDSA host key. debug1: Found key in /home/user/.ssh/known_hosts:2 debug1: ssh_ecdsa_verify: signature correct debug1: SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS sent debug1: expecting SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS debug1: SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS received debug1: Roaming not allowed by server debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_REQUEST sent debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_ACCEPT received debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: Next authentication method: publickey debug1: Offering RSA public key: /home/user/.ssh/id_rsa debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: Trying private key: /home/user/.ssh/id_dsa debug1: Trying private key: /home/user/.ssh/id_ecdsa debug1: No more authentication methods to try. • Selecting which IP address to use for outgoing requests from behind a NAT

    - by iamrohitbanga
Our organization has several external IP addresses. I am behind 2 layers of NAT and the servers choose which IP address to route my traffic to. Can I specify which IP address to use when finally leaving the organizations network. I know that source routing can be done in IPv4 by adding some options in the header. But can I configure my PC to add these options automatically. I have both a Windows and a Linux Machine.

  • MongoDB -what's the safest and most efficient way to change from Master-Slave to ReplicaSet?

    - by SecondThought
I now have two mongo servers with a Master-Slave configuration (all read-writes are done with the Master, the Slave is just a cold backup) serving a pretty demanding web app. I want to switch to ReplicaSet of 3 servers - I have these 3 already configured and working (still not connected to the web app). Just wondering what's the most efficient way (shortest down-time required, and lossless transfer of all data) to transfer all the data from the master/slave to the RS.

  • Has anyone run an objective comparison of Nessus and Skipfish

    - by jldugger
We recently set up Nessus, but the annual cost is not cheap. Recently Google published SkipFish which appears to compete in the area of webapps. As best I can tell, Nessus operates via a large database of known exploits. And, as best as I can tell, Skipfish automatically generates vulnerability tests. Has anyone done a comparison of the effectiveness of these two approaches yet?

  • Is there a good command-line OS from which I can launch VMs?

    - by Dredj
Generally speaking, I'm interested in something that can load quickly and, depending on what I want to do, can choose to launch a Virtual Machine that is tailored to my desired activity. So, something that loads to (preferably) a command line, then if I want to run my Windows 7 machine that has all of my programming junk on it, I can simply enter the command to launch some VM player and close it when I'm done.

  • Mac OS on a Windows PC

I've done a little bit of reading on the topic, but nothing too clear has turned up. Why is it so difficult to run Mac OS on a virtual machine on a PC? Some sources say it's because of hardware architecture. Is there a clear, definitive reason?

  • How to route certain applications through a VPN and others to use my 'standard' connection in OSX 10.6?

    - by Alfie
I am currently working abroad and use my company's VPN for FTP and some browsing. This is a relatively slow connection and while it is suitable for those VPN necessities; much of my other internet usage can be done without the VPN at a much higher speed. Is there a way to tell Safari and my FTP software to use the VPN and for all other connections to go directly to the internet. I am currently using OSX's Network Prefs for running my VPN connection. • How to recover MySQL database from .mysql file?

    - by Brayn
We had some problems with our MySQL server and somehow all I've got is a database.mysql file for the database I want to restore. I've done a bit of googleing but I didn't find anything about how should I handle this type of file. It's worth mentioning that the server was running Plesk and the database wasn't using InnoDB. Edit: I've forgot to mention that I don't know what application created the .mysql file and that it's in binary format. Thanks,

  • Power and Cooling Cost compared with Server/Hardware Cost

    - by psaccounts
Has anyone done, or is aware of any, calculations to compare the cost of power and cooling compared to the cost of hardware (servers) in a typical data center? This is to compute a true total cost of ownership of self-hosting servers. Of course real TCO includes: hardware_cost + power + cooling + rental + human_cost + maintenance Is there any study that says something like (TCO - hardware_cost) = 40% of hardware_cost in 3 years? Any pointers will be appreciated.

  • CentOS install proftpd with yum

    - by ServerBloke
Server: CentOS 6.2 64bit How can I install Proftpd using yum? A search for the package doesn't find it: yum list proftpd Error: No matching Packages to list Although my CentOS 6 VPS does find it, but this server doesn't. I have read I need to install an rpm of some kind. How would I do that and where is the reliable place to get it (64bit)? I have done Proftpd installs by compiling the source in the past but would prefer to use yum this time.

  • Can the XP 'Computer Locked' dialog box be customized?

    - by sadmicrowave
I'd like to customize the 'computer locked' dialog box in XP to be more graphic oriented, is there any way to do this, or perhaps just change the colors of the box? Also, I'm running dual monitors and would like the box to be positioned in the center of the two screens rather than in the center of Monitor 1 (main). Can this be done?

  • can't delete some files or change their attributes on my FTP server

    - by Revolter
I've installed a CMS on a shared host running Apache, now when I was deleting the root directory with FTP, some folders left with a "Permission denied" error and I can't change their attributes. the best explanation I've got is that the CMS installer has placed the files and has assigned its ownership to the Apache server instead of my user name. (i don't know it can be done) Ijust haven't use the uninstaller because I've lost my admin password - -" so how to delete those folders ?

  • How to encrypt an USB stick?

    - by Dimitri C.
When storing personal data on a USB stick, data needs to be encrypted to ensure privacy. Regrettably, this is far from easy to do without introducing a lot of overhead; ideally, the whole encryption process should done automatically. Does anyone know of a convenient way to encrypt the data on a USB drive? Update: I am using Windows Vista, although I would prefer a cross-platform solution.
