  currently i have a database of music that i have db'd in mysql, now i am writing a php frontend for it, and it will list out everything in a table, it works, but if i search "the beatles" it gives me 453 results(correct) however if i just search "beatles" it results in 0 rows, how would i go about making it able to search for something like that? heres my current line: $query2 = "SELECT * From `songs` WHERE `Artist` like '".$_REQUEST['q']."'   Currently, I am doing a search function. Lets say in my database, I have this data: Keyword1 Keyword2 Keyword3 Keysomething Key and the user entered: "Key" as the keyword to search. This is my current query: Q1: SELECT * FROM data WHERE (data_string LIKE '$key%' OR data_string LIKE '%$key%' OR data_string LIKE '%$key') Basically, I have 2 questions: How do I sort by (order by) similarity. From above example, I should have "Key" as my first result. My current result is: Keyword1, Keyword2, Keyword3, Keysomething and Key My SQL query only search by the "data_string" column, what if I want to seach others column? I have an ArrayList of custom objects that have the following properties: FileName FilePath CurrentFolder TopLevelFolder I then need to do a BinarySearch (or some other quick search) on the FileName property on all the objects in the ArrayList in .NET. In other words, I need to find the object in the ArrayList with the same FileName as the one I'm searching on. • Java, searching within a list of objects?

  I'm a bit lost on the way to make this happen the fastest. I have a large list of objects that have basic variable attributes (with getters / setters) and I need to do a search in this list to find the objects within the list that match a given parameter I have found how to do a regular list search but I need to, for example search for the value of the result of doing a call getName() for each object in the list and get objects that have a result that matches my input. Something like below where the third argument is the result of the method call and the second is what I am trying to find. int index = Collections.binarySearch(myList, "value", getName()); Any advice is appreciated

  Is it possible to use mod_rewrite to force all users entering a site (either through a link from another site, or by typing a URL in the address bar) to be redirected to the homepage? From the homepage (or any page within the site), users should then be able to access other pages in the site. But all users would be forced to enter the site through the homepage. Can this be done with mod_rewrite (or without using a scripting language)?

• Blocking yandex.ru bot

  I want to block all request from yandex.ru search bot. It is very traffic intensive (2GB/day). I first blocked one C class IP range, but it seems this bot appear from different IP ranges. For example: spider31.yandex.ru - 77.88.26.27 spider79.yandex.ru - 95.108.155.251 etc.. I can put some deny in robots.txt but not sure if it respect this. I am thinking of blocking a list of IP ranges. Can somebody suggest some general solution.

• Windows XP update not working

  I have a problem with XP updating. It hangs when I try to search for updates on the website. But the automatic updates still work. And it's running IE6, so I'm trying to update to IE8, hoping that will fix the problems with the website. But when installing IE8 it just hangs at Installing Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP And if I try to install it manually, it hangs when installing the updates for IE8. • Change YYYY-MM-DD to YYYYMMDD everywhere in file

  I can't just delete all of the hyphens, because elsewhere they are used as minus signs. I can find these dates with [0-9]\{4\}-[0-9]\{2\}-[0-9]\{2\} but I can't figure out how to keep those three different digit wildcards in memory. My attempts end up replacing the dates with the search string (e.g., :%s/[0-9]\{4\}-[0-9]\{2\}-[0-9]\{2\}/[0-9]\{4\}[0-9]\{2\}[0-9]\{2\}/g). Any ideas? If there's a command line solution, I'd love to learn that, too. Thanks!

Essentially, I see that a syslog system needs to support two conflicting workloads: log collection. Potentially massive streams of data need to be written quickly to disks and indexed. log querying. logs will be queried by both fixed fields such as date and source as well as text search. What is the best disk/system setup assuming I'd like to keep it to a single server for now? Should I use SSDs or ramdisk to off-load some processing? some disks in stripe and some in raid5? I am particularly eyeing Graylog2 with ElasticSearch/MongoDB

• Indexing text file content with command line query

  I take daily notes in a plaintext file labeled with date in the YYYYMMDD format. These files are no more than 100 lines long, and are written in a blog style format. I'd like to be able search these files as if they were blog posts indexed by google, with some phrase query returning the most relevant/recent date filenames, with a snippet containing the relevant part. Ideally it would be something like this: #searchindex "laptop no sound" returns: 20100909.txt: ... laptop sound isn't working... 20100101.txt ... sound is too loud... debating what laptop to buy... and so on and so forth. I'm working on a linux platform (Debian with GNOME). I've looked at beagle and tracker, but they just seem complete overkill for what I want.

• What if you've been asked to develop a site and the client later introduces Ts&Cs that you'll breach whilst doing your job?

  Disclaimer : this is all made up. Honest. And it represents no clients or employers living or dead, blah blah blah, etc. [Allegedly] As part of a website I've built, I've now been provided the Terms and Conditions of site usage to display on the site. These terms--which must be agreed to to access the site--include my (or any visitor to the sites) compliance with a number of clauses. Many of these clauses refer to general computer use and are not tied specifically to use of the site. Some of these clauses refer to things I have had to previously do as a legitimate part of my job and would expect to have to do again. When I've raised similar issues previously my line manager has said just to ignore it but that doesn't seem to be the professional thing to do. So, what do I do? Abiding by the terms would mean that I could no longer work on the project and would cause issues with my employer and the owner of the business the site is being created for. Ignoring them could lead to possible future issues with the business owner and is not something I'm necessarily happy with (the deliberate breaking of a legal contract). Neither option is one I'd choose and could have major consequences. Any thoughts?

  We are adding internationalization to our site. We are getting the client's IP address from the headers and looking it up against the IP2location database to get the client's country. Several of our clients reported seeing a blank page over the weekend. We'd like to be able to get screenshots or use a browser from many different countries on an ongoing basis for testing code changes. I need to know what the site looks like when accessed from various countries since there are several elements that vary by country. I've used Tor and Vidalia, along with the Tor customized Firefox browser however it appears the CSS is getting mangled. If Jeff Atwood can forget about HttpOnly cookies, sitemaps, and cross-site request forgeries all in the same site, what important thing could I be forgetting as well? I'm thinking about this from a web developer's perspective, such that someone else is creating the actual design and content for the site. So while usability and content may be more important than the platform, you the programmer have little say in that. What you do need to worry about is that your implementation of the platform is stable, performs well, is secure, and meets any other business goals (like not cost too much, take too long to build, and rank as well with Google as the content supports). Think of this from the perspective of a developer who's done some work for intranet-type applications in a fairly trusted environment, and is about to have his first shot and putting out a potentially popular site for the entire big bad world wide web. Also, I'm looking for something more specific than just a vague "web standards" response. I would imagine that visitors would come from everywhere, and for whatever reasons, some would be connecting through proxy servers. My site uses a server that is configured to rate limit connections from the same ip address to protect itself from a DOS attack. So, if a proxy server is heavily used by my visitors, then it would appear to be a DOS.
