Is it possible to dual boot between Ubuntu and W7.vhd? If anyone knows please tell me how.
if you can answer to [email protected] would be perfect. Thanks
Obviously the answer depends to some degree on the various versions supported, but in general terms - is there any reason I should pick one over the other? PCL for art and PS for text? Does one typically require less RAM on the printer? Speed differences? For home use it doesn't matter and only professional print people will notice and care?

How do you keep track of all your passwords?
Personally I host a personal copy of clipperz, I used keepass and passpack in the past.
What password manager would you recommend, what features does it have that make it awesome?

I really need a software which can convert from midi to wav. I've found midiConverter but it seems not work . After click record button, I receive a WEIRD file which is just messy sound not the fancy melody.
THanks for reading this and I'll vote to every answer :)
I'm trudging through the Amazon docs for a quick answer, but while I'm looking I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask here. My client uses custom software that uses (wait for it) Microsoft Excel to store data as opposed a RDBMS. Either way, their server is outdated and they are interested in using Amazon's cloud services, but would installing this software be possible, or am I barking up the wrong tree?
Links are welcome! Thanks for your help!
I used chroot to install Debian Lenny on my Ubuntu desktop. I have now decided I will no longer be using Debian and so I want to remove Debian and install Ubuntu server in a chroot instead.
My question is, I can simply remove the /chroot/debian/lenny folder and create a new chroot for Ubuntu server? or is there something else I need to do (I have read a bit about chroot but it does not answer this question)
One commandline tool per answer :)
WalkOnLAN

On Linux (and other Unix-like OS's if there's a general answer), is there an easy way to get an output similar to the time command (current real time, user, and system CPU usage totals) for a process that is still running?
I'm wanting to start a PC Repair Business and I would like to have a catchy name. If you can give me a name that is catchy and has a domain name available it will get the +15 (accepted answer) immediately.
I was thinking of setting up a partition on my Vista comp and installing Linux on that partition. I was gonna install Ubuntu on this partition. I was wondering if the equipment I have (i.e. video card, mouse, keyboard, network card) would be potentially unable to work on a linux platform? Any advice on doing this? I havent started yet, just doing my homework.
Thanks alot, any answer is always appreciated
In a corporate environment running Exchange and Outlook clients connecting to it why do server administrators not allow IMAP to be turned on for those that would like to connect to the server using IMAP?
I'm assuming the simple answer is port attacks and please excuse my naivety but does Exchange not suffer the same problems or is it because its behind the firewall and within the corporate network?
I tend to be a simple text editor user, but when I want IDE-like features, I've been using Geany. One thing I find bothersome about it, though, is I can see only one file at a time. Sometimes I want to edit a .cpp file while looking at a .hpp file (or two) without flipping back and forth trying to memorize code.
(Of course the easy answer is to try a different IDE, but if I want to stick with geany for some good reason...then what?)
I have a software package I wrote in Mono and I want to be able to deploy it to Ubuntu server as part of my move to continuous integration and deployment work flow.
I was wondering if there is a tool to help me do that, some of the tasks I will need is
Register a new domain/hostname with linux
Install packaegs using apt-et
Copy files
Run some bash scripts
What are the solutions to streamline this process to automate, I understand that is more then one answer to this, I would love to hear all the methods pros and cons.
Thank you
I often use SQLite for creating simple programs in companies. The database is placed on a file server. This works fine as long as there are not more than about 50 users working towards the database concurrently (though depending on whether it is reads or writes). Once there are more than this, they will notice a slowdown if there are a lot of concurrent writing on the server as lots of time is spent on locks, and there is nothing like a cache as there is no database server.
The advantage of not needing a database server is that the time to set up something like a company Wiki or similar can be reduced from several months to just days. It often takes several months because some IT-department needs to order the server and it needs to conform with the company policies and security rules and it needs to be placed on the outsourced server hosting facility, which screws up and places it in the wrong localtion etc. etc.
Therefore, I thought of an idea to create a distributed database server. The process would be as follows: A user on a company computer edits something on a Wiki page (which uses this database as its backend), to do this he reads a file on the local harddisk stating the ip-address of the last desktop computer to be a database server. He then tries to contact this computer directly via TCP/IP. If it does not answer, then he will read a file on the file server stating the ip-address of the last desktop computer to be a database server. If this server does not answer either, his own desktop computer will become the database server and register its ip-address in the same file. The SQL update statement can then be executed, and other desktop computers can connect to his directly.
The point with this architecture is that, the higher load, the better it will function, as each desktop computer will always know the ip-address of the database server. Also, using this setup, I believe that a database placed on a fileserver could serve hundreds of desktop computers instead of the current 50 or so. I also do not believe that the load on the single desktop computer, which has become database server will ever be noticable, as there will be no hard disk operations on this desktop, only on the file server.
Is this idea feasible? Does it already exist? What kind of database could support such an architecture?
I have quite complex directory tree. There are many subdirectories, in those subdirectories beside other files and directories are ".svn" directories.
Now, under linux I want to delete all files and directories except the .svn directories.
I found many solutions about opposite behaviour - deleting all .svn directories in the tree. Can somebody quote me the correct answer for deleting everything except .svn?
Is it possible to install Windows 7 (64 bit) on a Mac Pro without Bootcamp. I don't need Mac OS at all and just want to install Windows 7.
EDIT:
Yes, it seems possible (see answer) but I would strongly recommend to follow deddebme's advice on this matter.
I was a big time user of Windows 7 untill switched to Windows 8. I had customized the login screen for Windows 7 and Microsoft had a nice Registry switch to do so. I am looking for a similar way to change background of the start screen and also the login screen where you answer the password without using any 3rd party software
Basically I want to know if there's some hidden toggle for that in the OS somewhere and that anyone is aware of it.
My Windows DVD Maker stops/freezes the encoding process on some movies that I have converted to AVI files. Is there an answer to this using Windows DVD Maker? Or is there another software product that is better? (using Windows 7 Professional)
This might be an impossible question to answer remotely but I figure there may be some common causes that people can suggest so I think it's worth asking...
Video no longer plays smoothly on my laptop. It used to but not for a while now. For example, playing a video on YouTube is pretty typical: I press play (making sure it's not on HD or even HQ) and the video buffers a little then starts to play. At first it plays fine then the video starts to stutter, turning into a slideshow while the sound continues to play smoothly. If I try playing the same video on my Playstation 3 (which is linked to the same network) it plays smoothly so it can't be the connection.
Another example is streaming DivX videos. Again, I wait while it buffers and it starts but very soon, instead of a slideshow, this time the video just plays slowly while the sound continues as normal (instantly getting out of sync). Even if I let the video fully load before pressing play (i.e. it's no longer streaming), it still behaves the same way. I can even let it load 100% then save the file to hard disk and use VLC player to view it, and the same thing happens.
I'm using an old laptop running Windows XP. For the past several years it's been connected to the router via Wi-Fi but in the past few days I've changed that to a network cable (like my PS3) but that hasn't helped. Yes, I regularly install various bits and pieces of software but nothing that I can identify as being the cause.
So, are there known causes of this sort of behaviour and if so, what can I do to fix it?
Thanks.
Update to answer a few questions...
Laptop Spec' (note: video has played back fine for the majority of time I've had the laptop)
Toshiba Satellite 1900-603 (possibly called something else outside the UK)
Intel Pentium 4 2.2 Ghz Processor
Originally had 512Mb memory but recently doubled that to 1 Gig of memory
Graphics: ATI Mobility Radeon 16Mb DDR VRAM
Windows XP SP3 (Home edition)
Over the years I've done several things to speed it up (disabling indexing etc) and am generally happy with the performance. I also regularly have a clear out of old software (if for no other reason than the laptop only has a 40Gb hard disk) and use CCleaner and Glary Utilities to strip out much of the crap from my system.
Also recently (after doubling the memory), I've tried a few new things which might be likely candidates for slowing the video down such as Rocketdock, Jingle keyboard (which gives an old style 'clacky' typewriter sound when I type - love it), SugarSync, Taskbar Shuffle. However, the video doesn't play smoothly even when I try quit all these apps.

But here is the problem I am facing, I have windows machine, to test this dns and nameserver I set the first IPv4 DNS server to 182.19.26.92. Here is the details
Connection-specific DNS Suffix:
Description: Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller
Physical Address: ?14-FE-B5-9F-3A-A8
DHCP Enabled: No
IPv4 Address: 192.168.2.50

when I am pining from this machine it is not finding the server.
Where as in another server with another live IP with Fedora ping is working fine.
Someone just asked me 'how long should we keep logs for our application', and my answer was 'until the disk is full' as there's no reason to throw them away other than running out of space.
However, standard logrotate wants us to specify a specific period + number of rotations. Is there something similar that would let us say "rotate daily, and keep as much history as you like until there is only 5% space free"?
The platform is Redhat Linux.
Maybe I am trying do something impossible, but after hours of Googling I didn't get 100% answer yet.
So - it is possible put Conky on Desktop backgroud (behind desktop icons)?
The usual config:
own_window yes
own_window_type normal # (desktop, override) - I have the same result for all this attributes
own_window_transparent yes
own_window_hints undecorated,below,skip_taskbar,sticky,skip_pager
Is giving me Conky with (pseudo)transparent background in front of icons (they are completely hidden behind it, even if in background of Conky is shown background image), while I am trying achieve opposite...
