  • What tech stack/platform to use for a project?

    Hey guys, This is a bit of a weird meta-programming question, but I've realized that my new project doesn't need a full MVC framework, and being a rails guy, I'm not sure what to use now. To give you a gist of the necessary functionality; this website will display static pages, but users will be able to log in and 'edit their current plans'. All purchasing and credit card editing is being handled by a recurring payment subscriber, I just need a page to edit their current plan. All of that will be done through (dynamic) XML API calls, so no database is necessary. Should I stick with my typical rails/nginx stack, or is there something I could use that would lighten the load, since I don't need the Rails heft. I'm familiar with python and PHP but would prefer not to go that route. Is Sinatra a good choice here? tl;dr: What's a good way to quickly serve mostly static pages, preferably in Ruby, with some pages requiring dynamic XML rendering?

    I have stripes:link tag in a jsp with an event attribute: <stripes:link href="${actionBean.context.currentStage.stripesForwardAction}" addSourcePage="true" event="showTab2Link"> This triggers the validation to trigger on nested properties: @ValidateNestedProperties({ @Validate(field="county", required=true, minlength=2, maxlength=2, mask="\\d\\d"), @Validate(field="parish", required=true, minlength=3, maxlength=3, mask="\\d\\d\\d"), @Validate(field="holding", required=true, minlength=4, maxlength=4, mask="\\d\\d\\d\\d") }) However this would been fine if the actual values it is validation are not present, but they are present within the html and when debugging the bean. Why would the stripes:link trigger this? If I change it to an stripes:submit then it is fine. thanks, Dave

    I can marshal and unmarshal 1 object with no problems (in netbeans); I need to know how to do this with multiple objects? I can't generate anything but null pointer exceptions when trying to unmarshal 3 objects into an array from XML; so I don't even know if I've marshalled the 3 out correctly. I know the basic idea of declaring the object, then using the jaxbu or jaxbm command, but I'd like to see this working for more than one object. **TLDR: How do I marshal/unmarshal multiple objects of a single class into/out of XML??   • Web Deployment Project builds files that are no longer part of the project

    This is the error I get: Error 101 Could not load type 'control'. /Test.vbproj/x.ascx 1 1 WebDeployProject This is a left over file that was part of the project last week, but one of the developers deleted it from the project. I have to manually delete the file in order to get the WDP to build. Is there a way to tell the WDP to ignore the files that are not part of the project or to see that these files are not part of the project and delete them?

  • Modularizing web applications

    Hey all, I was wondering how big companies tend to modularize components on their page. Facebook is a good example: There's a team working on Search that has its own CSS, javascript, html, etc.. There's a team working on the news feed that has its own CSS, javascript, html, etc... ... And the list goes on They cannot all be aware of what everyone is naming their div tags and whatnot, so what's the controller(?) doing to hook all these components in on the final page?? Note: This doesn't just apply to facebook - any company that has separate teams working on separate components has some logic that helps them out. EDIT: Thanks all for the responses, unfortunately I still haven't really found what I'm looking for - when you check out the source code (granted its minified), the divs have UIDs, my guess is that there is a compilation process that runs through and makes each of the components unique, renaming divs and css rules.. any ideas? EDIT 2: Thanks all for contributing your thoughts - the bounty went to the highest upvoted answer. The question was designed to be vague- I think it led to a really interesting discussion.     I'm looking for hosting for an ASP.NET MVC 1.0 app. I've narrowed down with research to either asphostportal, asphostcentral, godaddy, or 1&1. I've ruled out crystaltech and softsyshosting due to price with better plans. Will be running a small e-commerce site written with ASP.NET MVC 1.0 and want to be sure it will work, as well as looking for cheapest price with best value in regards to disk space/bandwidth. And bandwidth is basically how much data can be sent from your site per month right? Any opinions appreciated as I'm finding this tough to narrow down. I know you can bin deploy MVC but heard full trust mode is required as well as some routing rules in IIS. 1&1 says they can't enable full trust.     [DISCLAIMER : None of the access token or ID below here are real] I've done research for three solid days and no result on how to get user wall feed(post). I have used https://graph.facebook.com/oauth/access_token?client_id=YOUR_APP_ID&client_secret=YOUR_APP_SECRET&grant_type=client_credentials and get the access token which is something like this access_token=454345994651138|bAMGfuW-ueNXGCahley7ga125HN and then https://graph.facebook.com/100005939123542/feed?access_token=454345994651138|bAMGfuW-ueNXGCahley7ga125HN It gives me general information such as user's likes, name, id, current city... but NOT user's wall posts. I've learned that there are three types of access token, which is App Token, User Token, and Page Token. In order to get user/feed by using graphAPI, I need to request to get User Token, but there's NO information in the lousy Facebook Doc! (Which frustrated me the most!) In order to generate the user access token, we need to set some permission, generate the access token, and GET the user's wall feed, which is in JSON format. My question is : How do I get the User Access Token in order to get user wall post in iOS Xcode?

Of course there are obvious things, such as using SSL and logging all access, but I'm wondering just where above these basic steps people consider the bar to be set. For example: Are you just relying on the same authentication mechanism that you use for normal users? If not, what? Are you running the Admin section in the same 'application domain'?   • Help me choose a web development framework/platform that will make me learn something

    I'm having a bit of an overload of information these past two days. I'm planning to start my own website that will allow local businesses to list their items on sale, and then users can come in and search for "Abercrombie t-shirt" and the stores that sell them will be listed. It's a neat little project I'm really excited for and I'm sure it'll take off, but I'm having problems from the get go. Sure I could use ASP.Net for it, I'm a bit familiar with it and the IDE for ASP.Net pages is bar-none, but I feel this is a great chance for me to learn something new to branch out a bit and not regurgitate .NET like a robot. I've been looking and asking around but it's all just noise and I can't make an educated decision. Can you help me choose a framework/platform that will make me learn something that's a nice thing to know in the job market, but also nice for me to grow as a professional? So far I've looked at: Ruby on Rails Kohana CakePHP CodeIgniter Symfony But they are all very esoteric to me, and I have trouble even finding out which IDE to use to that will let me use auto-complete for the proprietary keywords/methods. My question: Is it valid to have a portType with no input? I am using AltovaXML Spy and this WSDL passes the validation.... Is there any meaning having WSDL operation with no input? (I am not talking about One-Way Message Passing, where you can have input but no output - this is valid).

  • problem getting scanning to work on epson workforce 610

    i installed the latest epson software on my user's computer. everything works fine from the admin account (printing / scanning). yet, when i go to user's account (the standard user mode account the company employee uses on there machine) and launch the epson scan software or scan settings software it times out and puts up a dialog box asking me if i want to use the trouble assistant. my question is why would this all work in the admin account yet not work in the user mode account? any help is greatly appreciated.

  • How do I prove to a client/advertiser that my site's analytics numbers are what I say they are?

    I have been asked to provide recommendations on "Verified Analytics" for the next iteration of my company's site. Verified to mean that when we sell ad space, it's based on a number of page-views, and the people who buy that space want a way to verify that the numbers we give them are the actual numbers we're delivering. I have turned to The Google and the only services I can find for this sort of thing revolve around Google Analytics and the sale of a domain name. I export my analytics numbers to a PDF, have Google email the PDF to my auctioneer, and they look for signs of tampering. If no signs of tampering are found they put a little "Verified" badge on the domain auction. (Here) Other than this, and something similar on another domain sales site, I haven't found anything like what I've been asked to find. Currently we are using Google Analytics, however I've been also asked to recommend a replacement for that based on the ability to be verified. I'd rather just stick with Google Analytics since we also use Google for advertising.

  • OpenExeConfiguration Path Issue

    I'm trying to load an web.config from a server. Its placed at: \server\folders\web.config when i try this: ConfigurationManager.OpenExeConfiguration(@"\\server\folders\web.config"); it searches for: web.config.config and fails. ConfigurationManager.OpenExeConfiguration(@"\\server\folders\web"); it fails, because there is no folder \server\folders\web\ So i tried several things and it seems as its checking wether the file the path is pointing on exists, and afterwards it appliers a .config and gets the config file. Just for fun i created an web.loaders file, and a web.loaders.config file. with ConfigurationManager.OpenExeConfiguration(@"\\server\folders\web.local"); it loads the \server\folders\web.local.config perfectly, but throws Exceptions without the web.local file. So there a many ways to get this small thing loaded, but isn't there a more nice one than using a temp .web file or something? Any help i highly appreciated, yours Harry

Assuming that the service is scarcely used, does anyone know how many cpu hours that would eat up in a month just by sitting there and running?   • Web development - relative URLs without duplicating files

    I have a site with index.php in the root folder, images in /img , and overview.php in /content . I have a sidebar.php file that is included in both index.php and overview.php . How should I refer to /img/image.gif if I include a link in each file? The location of image.gif changes relative to the location of the file that references it. Using /img/image.gif in sidebar.php will work in index.php, but it fails for the file located at /content/overview.php. The only solution that I can see is to either include a seperate sidebar.php in each subdirectory, or include an /img directory in every sub-directory. The best suggestion that I can find is to use the <base html tag as suggested here: Change relative link paths for included content in PHP However, in the same link, SamGoody suggests that the <base tag "is no longer properly supported in Internet Explorer, since version 7." I'd like some insight on the matter before committing to a course of action. Thanks.
