  I have a 2009 MacBook and if it is not connected to power, it will die overnight. Battery cycle count is 60. Can this behavior be changed to go to "deep sleep" after 30 minutes of inactivity wherein it stops draining the battery?

• Sleep uses more power than I expect

  When my new Dell laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium and 4GB RAM sleeps (not when it hibernates), it will drain the battery overnight. My old Dell laptop with XP Pro (2 GB RAM) could sleep for days without running out of battery. Is it normal that Windows 7 sleep is this power-hungry or should I troubleshoot my new machine? Edit: I know how to set the different sleep/hibernate settings. That is not what I'm asking.

  I have bought a new HP ENVY-4 ultrabook. It has an i5 processor, preinstalled windows7 and 2GB radeon graphics card. What happened was when I started using ubuntu it showed overheating. I ignored it but after a few days it burnt my laptop battery to 0% capacity. It was just one month old so I got the battery replaced for free. I tried installing linux mint but it also showed overheating. I tried fedora17 but it didn't installed fine. On windows it is running perfectly fine and it's not even heating a bit. Now anyone please suggest whats the problem with ubuntu and how can I overcome with it. I am a computer science guy so I can't work without linux and this machine is then like a waste for me.

• Drivers for NVIDIA 520M not working in Ubuntu 12.04

  I am aware that this is nominally a duplicate question, however I've read the other questions and haven't been able to resolve my problem after many hours and attempts, so please don't delete it. Additionally, it seems like many answers to the other questions are specifically dependent on certain situations. My situation being different from the others I found represented, here's my question. Until last night, I had Ubuntu 12.04 installed with Wubi, and it ran ok, though slowly and with occasional hangs. So I partitioned the drive and installed 12.04 in its own partition. Now when I start it, I am stuck using 2D. I believe this is an NVIDIA bug. My NVIDIA card is a GT 520M and my machine has Optimus. Additional Drivers only displays my wireless driver. Going to System Settings Details Graphics shows Driver:Unknown, Experience:Standard. I downloaded the driver from the NVIDIA website, and ran the installer with no errors, except that the "distribution-provided pre-install script failed". After rebooting, my screen was stuck at 640X480, which was fixed by editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf However, I still was stuck in 2D, and nothing else had changed either. A thread suggested something called Bumblebee. I tried that, and when I ran optirun firefoxI got a frozen blank screen. Following another suggestion, I checked the BIOS to try and disable Optimus. I found and ran myriad other commands to try and fix the problem and nothing changed. Now I have just done a clean re-install of Ubuntu. From there, I: Installed all the updates Downloaded the NVIDIA driver Installed it Got screen stuck at 640X480, fixed in xorg.conf. To recap the problem: I can't get the NVIDIA drivers working I am stuck using 2D I'm an idiot I think if the first one is solved, the solution to the second will naturally follow. If you need me to provide any other information, I'd be happy to.   Considering the review that came out in March: Researchers from Purdue University in collaboration with Microsoft claim that third-party advertising in free smartphone apps can be responsible for as much as 65 percent to 75 percent of an app's energy consumption. Is there a best practice for integrating advert support into mobile applications, so as to not drain user battery too much. When you fire up Angry Birds on your Android phone, the researchers found that the core gaming component only consumes about 18 percent of total app energy. The biggest battery suck comes from the software powering third-party ads and analytics accounting for 45 percent of total app energy, according to the study. Has anyone invoked better ways of keeping away from the "3G Tail", as the report puts it. Is it better/possible to download a large set of adverts that are cached for a few hours, and using them to populate your ad space, to avoid constant use of the wifi/3g radios. Are there any best practices for the inclusion of adverts in mobile apps?

• Problem installing ubuntu touch on galaxy nexus

  I've installed ubuntu touch on my galaxy nexus following the tutorial on the official site. However the latter is not so clear.. In particular, during the installation, user action on the phone is requested and not documented on the tutorial: 1) The phone asked me whether rebooting, wiping the cache or something else (i did nothing and the phone rebooted) 2) The phone asked me whether replacing or not cmw (or something similar). I asked no.. After the installation all seemed to work correctly. However after shutting down the phone can't power on anymore... When I push the power button the battery icon appears, showing that the battery is completely charged. What am I supposed to do?

That’s when I noticed the display brightness kept changing on its own… and realized the problem. OS X, just like your phone, and any modern device, tries to figure out the brightness of the room you’re in, and adjust the brightness of the screen. If you are over in Windows, it’s called “Adaptive” brightness, while your phone will just call it “Auto”. While this technology is great in theory, I don’t really need max brightness all the time, and I like to control it manually to make sure I’m getting the best battery life. Open up System Preferences, head to Displays. Then uncheck the Automatically adjust brightness setting.

  i have had this problem since i installed ubuntu 12.4 on my laptop (on all of distro i have this problem execpt of backtrack) my problem is when i start my linux while it connect to power source there is no problem everything works fine . but when i disconnect and wants to work with battery it crash i mean everything work tooooo slowly and my cpu usage goes to 100 ... it happen too when i start my linux with battery and want to connect the power source to it .... it happens again . i updated my distro and now on i have 12.10 on my laptop but it has this problem . my lap top is hp probook 4520s my graphic card is ati radeon 530 v and i installed catalyst control center on my lap top and it works fine but the only problem is that what i said ...is it relate to my graphic card ???

• How can I disable usb-autosuspend for a specific device?

  This is related to the issue discussed in this question. Summary: the mouse freezes when operating on battery since it is autosuspended after a certain time and needs more time to wake up. Disabling usb-autosuspend for the mouse's receiver in powertop is a temporary solution but does not survive a reboot. How can I permanently disable the usb autosuspend for only one specific device? A solution that does not involve installing additional packages is preferred (after all, I want to disable something) but not required. Removing powertop (which seems to be a solution for some) is not what I want - I like poertop... And installing laptop-mode-tools to disable usb_autosuspend alltogether is not what I want, either, thus the new question. Also: will this affect the battery of my notebook? The logitech unifying receiver for the mouse stays connected all the time, so if that prevents the autosuspend from happening for all devices that would probably be bad.

• Fn keys for Brightness not working on Toshiba Satellite L755

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 and I love it! The only problem is the keys for my brightness, F6 and F7, does not work when I am on battery power or AC power. It randomly works after I am idle for a while and log back in. The other weird thing is to see my battery indicator, I need to toggle my touch pad button that is right above the actual pad on and off for it to show up, and then back on so I can use my touch pad, obviously. The only other Fn buttons that work on my laptop is the button to mute (F1) Touch pad on and off (F9) and Fn+3 and Fn+4 for my volume. The only Fn buttons that I care if they work again are my brightness, which again, are F6 and F7. Thanks! James

• The Apple iPad &ndash; I&rsquo;m gonna get it!

  Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). Well, heck, here comes another non-techie blogpost. You know I’m a geek, so I love gadgets! I found it RATHER interesting to see all the negative news on the blogosphere about the iPad. The main bitch points are - No Multi tasking No Flash Just a bigger iPhone. So here’s the deal! My view is, the above 3 are EXACTLY what I had personally hoped for in the Apple iPad. Before the release, I had gone on the record saying - “If the Apple Tablet is able to run full fledged iTunes (so I can get rid of iTunes on my desktop, I don’t like iTunes on Windows), can browse the net, can read PDFs, and will be under $1000, I’ll buy it”. Well, so, the released iPad wasn’t exactly like my dream tablet. The biggest downer IMO was it’s inability to run full iTunes. But, really, in retrospect, I like the newly released iPad. And here is why. No Multi tasking and No Flash, means much better battery life. Frankly, I rarely multi task on my laptop/desktop .. yeah I know my OS does .. but ME – I don’t multi task, and I don’t think you do either!! As I type this blogpost, I have a few windows running behind the scenes, but they are simply waiting for me to get back to them. The only thing truly running and I am making use of, other than this blogost, is media player playing some music – which the iPad can do. Also, I am logged into IM/Email – which again, iPad can do via notifications. It does the limited multitasking I need, without chewing down on batteries. Smart thinking, precisely the reason I love the iPhone. I don’t want a bulky battery consuming machine. Lack of flash? Okay sure, I can’t see Hulu on my iPad. That’s some loss. I can see youtube. Also, per Adobe I can’t see some porn sites, which I don’t want to see on my iPad. But, Flash is heavy. Especially flash video. My dream is to see silverlight run on the iPhone and iPad. No flash = not such a big loss. Speaking of battery life – 10 hours is plenty. I haven’t been away from electricity for that long usually, so I’m okay with charging it up when it runs low. It’s really not such a big deal honestly. Finally, eBook functionality – wow! I went on the record saying, eBook readers are not for me, but seriously, the iPad is perfect for my eBook needs at least. And as far it being just a bigger iPhone? I’ve always wanted a bigger iPhone, precisely for the eBook reading experience. I love my iPhone, I love the apps on it. The only thing that sucks about the iPhone is battery life, but other than that, it is the best gadget I have ever bought! And something that runs on mobile chips, is that thin, and those newly written apps .. mail, calendar .. I am very very excited to get my iPad, which will be the 64gig 3G version. The biggest plus in an iPad ……… no contract on data. I am *hoping*, this means that I can buy a SIM card in Europe, and use the iPad here. That would be killer awesome! But hey, if I had to pick downers in the iPad, they would be - - I wish they had a 128G Version. Now that we have a good video viewing machine, I know I’d chew up space quickly.- Sync over WIFI, seriously Apple.  Both for iPhone and iPad.- 3 month wait!!- Existing iPhone users should get a discount on the iPad data plan.   I am thinking about adding something besides unity into my ubuntu 12.04. My questions are this: -If I add cinnamon, mate, gnome2/3, could I still call it it Ubuntu, or would it be Mint? -Why not just add Mint instead of cinnamon, or mate, into Ubuntu? -Or is Mint just those at the core, and not the other way around? -I had terrible battery drain using Mint. Something was wrong with the kernel with my laptop type. If I add cinnamon, would I get that battery drain again? -And lastly, would I be able to get that awesome HUD if I add the other things? I realize these questions are a bit confusing, or at least they are for me.

• Power adapter is not seen in Ubuntu 11.10

  I have an Alienware M17xR3 laptop running Ubuntu 11.10, and there is an issue with my power adapter when it is plugged in after OS has already loaded (i.e. when I unplug it when at Ubuntu's desktop, and then replug it in again). The problem is Ubuntu thinks its still running on battery power, and that the battery is discharging, and does not recognize my power adapter plugged in. Note that when the power adapter is plugged in when Ubuntu loads up, there is no issue though. It sees the power adapter just fine. So what can be done to solve this problem? Thanks in advance for any help.

• Asus 1215n GPU driver/s don't give me a "full" OS experience

  I'm use to not having specific drivers from a manufacture on my laptop when running a Linux OS and that has always been fine - there's been adequate FOSS drivers for my needs and it hasn't ruined any of my OS experience. When I bought an Asus 1215n one of the upsides to the hardware seemed to be the switchable GPU that could give lots of performance or lots more battery life and would switch on-the-fly... with Windows of course. Seems that the Nvidia driver are crap and people advise not installing them. I have some sort of workaround for vga_switcharoo (?) and the on-the-fly nature of the GPUs has turned in to a manual one :( The worst bit though (aside from shorter battery life) is the web experience with HTML5. If I visit Mozilla's Web O'Wonder site I'm told I don't have WebGL working due to driver issues. This really blows - is it possible that proprietary drivers can now ruin my web experience too?!

  This is what advanced settings tell me: Shell Laptop lid close action on battery suspend Shell Laptop lid close action when on AC suspend I couldn't post a screenshot because "new users aren't allowed to post images. Earn more than 10 reputation to post images" The screen is on when I open the lid after closing for a few seconds. But not when I suspend from the session menu. Still the battery on my Dell inspiron N5110 is always empty when I get back to it after closing the lid. 'Why' is my question.

• Dead (nearly blank) laptop screen, secondary screen works - how to fix?

  My laptop screen is black while my secondary screen is fine. What I tried: setting brightness (Fn keys) - no effect, no change seen, also on secondary screen removing static electricity like suggested here - no effect restarting / charging battery, running on battery / "wall" power - no effect as well wait to see if warming it up helps - it doesn't follow official Ubuntu diagnostics - checking now... What I will try next: check last updates I've made IIRC I am running on nomodeset already, but can't recall how to verify this Further symptoms: can't see BIOS screen system loads and works fine, just screen has problems screen works (occasionally I could glimpse very dimly what was going on, but it was like with minimum brightness set - nearly non-distinguishable from just a black screen) Any ideas how to proceed best? What is most probable cause?

• Which iso image do I need to install Ubuntu 12.04 on a Macbook Pro so that it boots using UEFI?

  Unlike with earlier releases, the website is unclear on giving a straight recommendation for installing ubuntu on a mac: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/12.04/release/ I've read several times, that I should use an alternative image. But this is only offered as 64-bit. However, I'm also told to rather use 32-bit images for better software compability. http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/12.04/release/ubuntu-12.04-alternate-amd64+mac.iso Even though I should only use alternative images, there is offered a standard desktop image which is "adjusted to work properly on Mac systems". http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/12.04/release/ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64+mac.iso Question Which image should I take? Do both of these images offer UEFI boot? I've tried both of them already, but both have setup an install with BIOS emulation. This is quite annoying because of the short battery life and high temperatures which are harmful to battery longevity.
