  • Password not accepted when resuming from sleep

    My HP Pavilion dv-series notebook will not accept the user account password for the logged in user when resuming from sleep - message returned is Incorrect Password. Simply selecting the Switch User option reloads the login screen and allows me to log in as the same user with the same password that was originally rejected. And, yes I've tried it more than one (hundred) times in case you were thinking it's just a case of slippery fingers. Another interesting point is that it appears to be independent of the software running on the machine. Since the issue first appeared, I have done two clean installs where all HD partitions were wiped and new ones created during fresh installation of the OS. The first such clean install was of Ubuntu (Lucid) 10.04 amd-64, the second of Win 7 Pro 64 (from boxed disc and activated post install). Exactly the same symptoms, described above, are exhibited on both platforms. Have engaged in significant amount of Googling an come up empty so any ideas are welcome.

    TrueCrypt - "Warning! Password locked: Fixed disk0" error message on boot. When i start my laptop (Acer TravelMate 2410). after the starting memory check, the screen goes full black, and a message appears for about 3 seconds: Warning! Password locked: Fixed disk0 and after that, disappears, and next message comes out: Operating System Not Found and all stops here. Windows Xp was installed on it, before this came. TrueCrypt cd (witch was made during the process of full encryption) is not working, not in restoring MBR, no even in decrypting my drive - completely useless. Note: I detected some short of boot sector errors (i dont know the amount) on my drive before this happened. Please, i would greatfully thank every comment, or suggestion, because my computer is unusable now. The HDD is a Samsung HDD, 160Gb. Other preferences: Acer TravelMate 2410 Notebook, 2 Gb RAM, 1500 Mhz Intel Celeron M processor. Regards

    When writing a login system for a website, it is standard to use some combination of parameterized calls, sanitizing the user input, and/or escaping special characters to prevent SQL injection attacks. Any good login system, however, should also hash (and possibly salt) every password before it goes into an SQL query, so is it still necessary to worry about SQL injection attacks in passwords? Doesn't a hash completely eliminate any possibility of an SQL injection attack on its own?

  • How do I backup (from Vista Home Premium) to a FAT32 HDD connected to a wireless router with no user account or password set?

    I have a Seagate expansion 2TB HDD which I've managed to get working on my wireless router (thanks to fat32format) however I haven't managed to set my backup to work with it. Vist Home Premium requires that I input a username and password in the backup utility. As far as I'm aware that type of access control isn't set on the HDD: Can I set up the access control on the HDD? If so how Or, can I set the backup to work without it? However the problem is the password protect utility is not compatible with MAC ( I'l be regularly transferring data between MacOS and Windows). Is there a way to password protect my external drive which is compatible with both Windows and MacOS?

    I was reading this Ars article on password security and it mentioned there are sites that "hash the password before transmitting"? Now, assuming this isn't using an SSL connection (HTTPS), a. is this actually secure and b. if it is how would you do this in a secure manor? Edit 1: (some thoughts based on first few answers) c. If you do hash the password before transmission, how do you use that if you only store a salted hash version of the password in your user credentials databas? d. Just to check, if you are using a HTTPS secured connection, is any of this necessary?

I have an Audio model which has a mp3 field as follows: class Audio < ActiveRecord::Base has_attached_file :mp3, :storage => :s3, :s3_credentials => S3_CREDENTIALS, :bucket => S3_CREDENTIALS[:bucket], :path => ":rails_root/public/system/:attachment/:id/:style/:filename", :url => "/system/:attachment/:id/:style/:filename" I am calling audio.mp3.url from a controller, and it returns http://s3.amazonaws.com/MyApp/audios/mp3s//original/96a9ae89302fdf8462ee05eb829f2e17578b144e20120908-2-11f61zr.mp3?1347135050 instead of http://s3.amazonaws.com/MyApp/audios/mp3s/000/000/004/original/96a9ae89302fdf8462ee05eb829f2e17578b144e20120908-2-11f61zr.mp3?1347135050 (which works) Why is it missing the '000/000/004' part of the route? The same model is generating the right URL when used in a view. Any help? I am using paperclip 3.2.0 and Rails 3.1.8. Any help?

    Hi, I was just wondering if it was possible to protect a directory with a username/password combination using .htaccess and .htpasswd files, but not protect the files within. i.e. One is able to link, say, images within that directory to friends, but browsing the directory itself would not be allowed without a username/password.     for sensitive data, would it be better to have a somewhat long, but memorable password (and hence not totally random) or use a program like keepass to make a super long, random password with the highest possible entropy, and then just write down the password on a piece of paper kept in ones pocket. If that bang on the door comes, then swallow the paper. Which is a better security practice? I'm not in any way a criminal, i just am curious about topics concerning security. Thanks.

  • How to make Chrome/Chromium remember passwords in the gnome seahorse keyring?

    Is it possible to make chrome or chromium (as that comes default in the repos) to use the Gnome seahorse as password vault? I have not found a way to do this for Firefox either, but maybe a solution for Firefox will lead to a solution for Chrome. FYI: Epiphany is properly integrated into Gnome by default, and does use the default password vault. It would be great to at least have all passwords in a single, actually secure, place, instead of laying around in my home-dir. Even better would be if somehow they could re-use eachothers passwords, but that depends on the implementation of this integration, i guess.

    One of the joys of working for a government healthcare agency is having to deal with all of the paranoia around dealing with PHI (Protected Health Information). Don't get me wrong, I'm all for doing everything possible to protect people's personal information (health, financial, surfing habits, etc.), but sometimes people get a little too jumpy. Case in point: One of our state customers recently found out that the browser provides the handy feature to save your password. We all know that it has been there for a while and is completely optional and is up to the end user to decide whether or not it is a smart decision to use or not. However, there is a bit of an uproar at the moment and we are being demanded to find a way to disable that functionality for our site. Question: Is there a way for a site to tell the browser not to offer to remember passwords? I've been around web development a long time but don't know that I have come across that before.   • Brute force characters into a textbox in c#

    Hey everyone, I am VERY new to programming and the only language I know is C# So I will have to stick with that... I want to make a program that "test passwords" to see how long they would take to break with a basic brute force attack. So what I did was make 2 text boxes. (textbox1 and textbox2) and wrote the program so if the text boxes had the input, a "correct password" label would appear, but i want to write the program so that textbox2 will run a brute force algorithm in it, and when it comes across the correct password, it will stop. I REALLY need help, and if you could just post my attached code with the correct additives in it that would be great. The program so far is extremely simple, but I am very new to this, so.     I'm building a web application that shows users interesting visualizations of their Gmail activity (who they're emailing the most, etc). Obviously the user needs to give me his Gmail password to use the application, and I'm wondering how I should store it: Store the Gmail password in plaintext. Risky! Don't store the Gmail password at all; force the user to enter it every time he wants to sync data. Potentially inconvenient! Encrypt the Gmail password before storing it. The user's password to my application is the key. Something like (3) seems best, but with (3) I can only sync data when the user logs in (since I won't know his password to my application at any other time), which isn't ideal. I'd prefer a Mint.com-like solution whereby the user can click a button to sync data from Gmail at any time without re-entering his password (any idea how Mint accomplishes this without storing your banking passwords?)

    I tried to find the answer to this question on Stack Overflow without any success. Let's say I store passwords using SHA-1 hash (so it's 160 bits) and let's assume that SHA-1 is enough for my application. How long should be the salt used to generated password's hash? The only answer I found was that there's no point in making it longer than the hash itself (160 bits in this case) which sounds logical, but should I make it that long? E.g. Ubuntu uses 8-byte salt with SHA-512 (I guess), so would 8 bytes be enough for SHA-1 too or maybe it would be too much?

  • GUI for generating XML

    Hello. Does anybody know of GUIs for generating XMLs? This means the user will not be presented with an IDE with support for XML for him to type XML codes. This would be helpful for non-technical people using the system. I know this sounds easy, given many libraries that can help in generating XMLs. The issue here is that the schema is really that flexible rather than being straightforward like representing books in a library with their properties. Imagine HTML, where we can create font tags inside a body, a table, a div, or nested even within itself. The solution is a WYSIWYG application that allows user to generate html codes (XML). However, that is good for XML applied in webpages since they involve visual aspect and design. My application of XML would focus on representing some conceptual and computational definitions, much like sql-like syntax, but more than that. I'm actually after the approach or previous works done or tried, although having a library/working framework for that would be better. Btw, I'm using Java for this project. Currently, I'm just thinking of presenting element tags where user will be able to drag and drop them and nest them with each other. And perhaps, assist them through a forms in inputing values for XML attributes. I'm still hoping if there are better ideas from the community. Thank you.

If print("\$src2->crit is a ".$src->crit."<br />") returns that it is an array then why is is_array($src2->$crit) generating an error?

    I am trying to generate thumbnails from movies using FFMPEG and the FFMPEG-PHP extension. My script works OK however takes 20 minutes just to generate 5-10 thumbnails! The script works by generating random numbers which are used as frame numbers later. All numbers generated are within the movies frame count.   • Generating all unique crossword puzzle grids

    I want to generate all unique crossword puzzle grids of a certain grid size (4x4 is a good size). All possible puzzles, including non-unique puzzles, are represented by a binary string with the length of the grid area (16 in the case of 4x4), so all possible 4x4 puzzles are represented by the binary forms of all numbers in the range 0 to 2^16. Generating these is easy, but I'm curious if anyone has a good solution for how to programmatically eliminate invalid and duplicate cases. For example, all puzzles with a single column or single row are functionally identical, hence eliminating 7 of those 8 cases. Also, according to crossword puzzle conventions, all squares must be contiguous. I've had success removing all duplicate structures, but my solution took several minutes to execute and probably was not ideal. I'm at something of a loss for how to detect contiguity so if anyone has ideas on this it'd be much appreciated. I'd prefer solutions in python but write in whichever language you prefer. If anyone wants, I can post my python code for generating all grids and removing duplicates, slow as it may be.

  • Generating Thermal Printer (Zebra Printer) Sized PDFs for FedEx Labels

    Background I own a company which does a lot of FedEx Ground shipping. We have a 3rd party fulfillment center, which stores some of our inventory and at our request ships it. Zebra/Thermal printers are the most cost effective shipping label printers available and our 3rd party fulfillment center has one. I want to generate the labels locally then e-mail the 3rd party fulfillment center a PDF of the labels which they can then print out on their printer. Problem The trouble is, I can't seem to figure out how to print these 4" x 6" labels to a PDF, as FedEx (both ship manager and fedex.com) uses javascript to detect what printer I have. Question What's a clever way to send my 3rd party fulfillment center a PDF (or equivalent) of our 4" x 6" zebra thermal printer labels so they can print them out without re-entering the data?

  • Need help generating a core dump from apache segfault

    I have a script which intermittently returns a white screen of death in firefox and Error 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): Unknown error. chrome. When I try to access the script using a PHP HTTP client (like Zend_Http_Client), intermittently I get an exception (sorry I don't have the exact message on me at the moment). I suspect a segfault. This is further buttressed by the lines in my error log that look like this: [Thu Mar 18 16:03:02 2010] [notice] child pid 845 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) Now, I'm running RedHat, and I know that RedHat doesn't generate core dumps out-of-the-box. I followed the instructions here http://kbase.redhat.com/faq/docs/DOC-5353, but I'm not seeing any core dumps. How do I generate a core dump?
