• how to split a very large database on sql server

  I have a 90 GB SQL Server database that I want to make more manageable. It stores stock data from 50+ different stocks from 2009 and 2010, and each stock is a separate table. Some tables have hundreds of millions of rows, and other have just a few million. What I want to do is somehow split the database, so that I don't have a single database file that is 90 GB. What I want is to be able to somehow magically split all the tables so that I can backup the 2009 data once and not have to keep on including it in the backup every time I backup the entire database, however, I would like the 2009 data to be included whenever I do a query. Is partitioning the database the way to go? Will it do the above for me, or will I need some other solution? I research partitioning, but I wasn't sure if that would solve all my problems. I wasn't able to find anything that would tell me whether or not it would migrate prexisting data, or whether it only worked for newly inserted data. Any help or pointers would be much appreciated. • TIME_WAIT connections not being cleaned up after timeout period expires

  I am stress testing one of my servers by hitting it with a constant stream of new network connections, the tcp_fin_timeout is set to 60, so if I send a constant stream of something like 100 requests per second, I would expect to see a rolling average of 6000 (60 * 100) connections in a TIME_WAIT state, this is happening, but looking in netstat (using -o) to see the timers, I see connections like: TIME_WAIT timewait (0.00/0/0) where their timeout has expired but the connection is still hanging around, I then eventually run out of connections. Anyone know why these connections don't get cleaned up? If I stop creating new connections they do eventually disappear but while I am constantly creating new connections they don't, seems like the kernel isn't getting chance to clean them up? Is there some other config options I need to set to remove the connections as soon as they have expired? The server is running Ubuntu and my web server is nginx. Also it has iptables with connection tracking, not sure if that would cause these TIME_WAIT connections to live on. Thanks Mark.

  Hi, this is my second post here and only my second day dealing with my own dedicated server. I have no previous experience in this field so please bear with me. I have successfully created a package and linked up my domain yesterday. I am getting an error regarding mb_convert_encoding() wich after doing some reading discover I have to enable or install a module?? Any way, my cpanel is "cPanel 11.25.0-R46156 - WHM 11.25.0 - X 3.9" and after some searching found mainsoftwareModule Installers but cannot find any to do with mbstrings. Could anyone point me in the right direction in what or where I should be looking?? Any help much appreciated, Regards, Phil

  ... like my title says... I cannot connect to my instance on sql server express from sql server standard... I have tried disabling firing wall and checked sqlbrowser is started but for some reason I cannnot connect to my datbase... called server_name\sqlexpress.. I have a virtual machine and a full scale MS SQL Server 2008 R2 running on it... and I have several other vm running sqlexpress. they run fine and I can connect to them using sqlexpress... but when i try to access from sqlserver... I get this error. A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections.   we are building a web front end for a internet access token management system that uses radius (freeradius) queried from a captive portal. Reason for building this part is the integration into the accounting and billing platform that operates behind the scenes (all other parts are currently available open source software) The structure is fairly standard, and setting up the basic bits were easy enough (authentication, traffic updates from the captive portal, account expiry date/times) - but I seem to have run out of ability when it comes to limiting an account by traffic consumed. So we can: set up usernames / passwords set expiry dates/times for a given user see the traffic for that user being accurately updated in RADACCT But we can't figure out the correct way/attribute to expire a user when they have consumed X octets of traffic. What attributes are used, or - maybe more accurately - what would be the correct way to use these attributes to limit an account to a certain volume of traffic? Any links to documentation appreciated - freeradius documentation doesn't seem to address the issue directly, or I'm looking in the wrong place... --mark

• Linux DD command partition -to- partition

  I just used the DD command to copy the contents of one partition over to another partition on another drive, like this: dd if=/dev/sda2 of=/dev/sdb2 bs=4096 conv=noerror sda2 partition was 66GB and sdb2 was 250GB. I read that by doing this the extra space on the drive I am copying to will be wasted, is this true? I wasn't worried about loosing the extra space for the time being however, I just ran: sudo kill -USR1 (PID) to view the current status of DD and it has written over 66GB of data, will it continue to write data until it gets to 250GB? If so, is there a way to stop the process without corrupting it as waiting for it to write blank space seems like a waste of time.

• gitosis always asks for git password

  I've just followed the simple gitosis install instructions on an Ubuntu server, such as these http://blog.agdunn.net/?p=277 On the server I log in as "mark", and into /home/mark/.ssh/ I copied my keyfiles id_rsa and id_rsa.pub from my laptop. I used that id_rsa.pub when initialising the gitosis stuff, and can happily connect locally when logged in as 'mark'. From my laptop though, where I have the same keys, I can't connect. I just get an error: git clone git@support:gitosis-admin.git Initialized empty Git repository in u:/gitosis-admin/.git fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly The server is Ubuntu 9.04, the client is a Win7 laptop with Cygwin and WinSysGit.

• Ubuntu, apache2 wildcard dns to subdomain

  Currently I'm hosting my own (ubuntu) server with the following services: samba, ftp and a webserver. I've bought a domain and linked the DNS A-record to my ISP's IP. This is working correctly. Now I'd like to use the DNS wildcard-record to create subdomains. I want to avoid waiting 24hrs before the DNS change completes. Thusfar I'm only able to redirect all incoming wildcards to the same directory: test1.domain.com redirects to /var/www test2.domain.com redirects to /var/www Although I'd like to get: test1.domain.com redirects to /var/www/test1 test2.domain.com redirects to /var/www/test2 My guess would be to change the file /etc/apache2/sites-available/domain. • Why Buy Hardrives with storage server from a vendor?

  Hi all, Im just browsing around at storage server's like the Dell MD100/ MD3000 and the Sun J4200 and although the storage server seems reasonable (approx $3000-$4000 AUD) the hard-drives that you buy to go along with them seems exorbitantly expensive. And I'm not sure why. Surely at most they are using good quality RAID level 7200rpm SATA hdd, but even then they are still charging almost 4 times the price. What is the advantage to buying these from them. I can see if one fails then the vendor replacing it is convenient. But at that price you could buy double the amount of hdd and just claim on warranty directly with the manufacturer. It would be much cheaper and you wouldn't be relying on someone else to fix your problems. Is this the case of "you don't get fired if you buy IBM?" mentality or is there some reason I'm not grasping here? Cheers Mark

• In Visio 2010, how can I create a mandatory, non-identifying relationship between two database tables

  I'm working in MS Visio 2010. This is the relevant part of my ERD: The relationship between Event and Adventure is correct: there's a foreign key from Event to Adventure, and that FK is part of Event's primary key. However, what I can't figure out is how to make the relationship line from Adventure to AccomodationType be the same, without making that relationship part of the PK of adventure. When I look at the 'Miscellaneous' properties of that relationship line, I want it to be: Cardinality: Zero or more Relationship type: Non-identifying Child has parent: Not optional (mandatory) But the checkbox for the third property is greyed out, and toggles between True/False as I make the relationship Non-identifying/Identifying. The only way I could figure out was to disconnect the two columns, from the 'Definition' tab, which then un-grey's the 'Optional' checkbox, but then I lose the foreign key property on the accomType column, and while the relationship symbols are correct, the line remains dotted. Any ideas, anyone?

• Swapping 3Ware Raid Card - Best Procedure

  We have a server running an old firmware version and driver (just took this position) on the 3Ware 9650SE Raid Controller... We have been having issues with the server and seemed to have narrowed it down to the Raid Card... I will be replacing the Raid card with the same model of 3Ware 9650SE, however, the card ordered most likely will have newer firmware on it. I managed to backup all the data to a very large drive. My plan is to update the firmware/driver on the current setup (which is still booting) and verify that everything works.. Then throw in the new Raid Card, check the firmware version (not letting it post). And update to newest firmware if needed via Java management utility on the card? Is this the best route? Thanks!

  I have a folder structure similar to the one shown below these paragraphs. How do I change security on every 'Photos' folder without clicking through each individually in Windows Explorer? There are about 50 top level folders (Bob, Jim, Eva, etc, etc) which have the same layout of folders inside. I am keen for any suggestions, either scripting or GUI. I am on Windows Server 2003. • Outlook conversation view and categories

  At work, I tend to receive a couple of hundred emails a day. To keep from being overwhelmed, I have been using categories to sort and prioritize my mail messages. I auto-assign categories, then group by them: Code Reviews, To, CC, Distribution List/BCC. This means that, for example, a message that's explicitly to me will always show up higher in my inbox than one I get because I'm on a Distribution List. It's a huge time saver and it brings important emails to my attention much more quickly. Recently, the email threads I'm involved in have started to get quite long, and I'd like to be able to use conversation view, or at least sort by subject. Outlook, however, doesn't seem to support any (useful) combination of conversation view and categories. I've tried the following things without success: Grouping by category, then conversation view -- Outlook gives me an error (the grouping/sort combination is too complex). Using a custom view to group by conversation -- category doesn't show up as an option to sort by Grouping by category, then subject -- Getting closer, but the top subject is the first alphabetically, not the most recent Grouping by conversation, then category -- This works, but it doesn't do me much good, because the top conversation is the latest, without regard to what category it belongs to Is there a way for me to retain my category system or something similar while taking advantage of grouping related emails together? I've written Outlook plugins in the past, so even that's not too out there to serve as a proper solution.

  Our small business currently has 3 wireless access points around the building, each with their own SSID. Security is done with WEP (ick) and MAC address filtering (double ick). We are trying to reconfigure the setup, with these goals: wifi roaming between the access points user-based authentication that isn't as annoying as MAC address filtering. 1) The entire building is hardwired with ethernet, so I assume it should be easy to set up the routers to act as one big network, but I can't figure out how. Can someone point me in the right direction? The routers are consumer-grade linksys routers, is it possible to do this without getting new hardware? 2) For security, we will probably upgrade to WPA2, and I'm thinking of using the Enterprise version so that users can log in with a username, instead of having a single key (so if an employee leaves or something, their access can be removed). We have several on-site Windows servers, can one of them be set up as a RADIUS server, or is that best left to a dedicated machine (again, using existing hardware is good).

• Measuring cumulative network statistics per user or per process

  I've been googling for hours -- Under Linux I want to know the cumulative bytes sent and received by user or by process over all ip protocols. The best I've found in my searches is that it's possible to use iptables to mark packets for a user, for example: iptables -t mangle -A OUTPUT -p tcp -m owner --uid-owner test -j MARK --set-mark 1 It appears that "tc" can then shape traffic with that but I just want the statistic -- I don't want to shape the traffic. I want something like: "user U has transmitted used XMB since time Y". I can't figure out how to get statistics from these marked packets. Also, I've looked at nethogs but they seem to be measuring the instantaneous flow and I need cumulative counts. Anyone have ideas?

• Cannot deploy reports on localhost/reports

  I am using Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2, Sql Server Reporting Services(SSRS) on an xp virtual machine.. I have created a report and am trying to deploy it... but getting this error... The specified report server URL http://localhost/Reports could not be found. Verify the syntax of the URL and that the report server exists. I went to see my "services".... SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) is "started", but SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) is not. When I try to start it, it says windows could not start the sql server on local computer error code 10048 I tried to go in cmd and tried C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Binn\sqlservr.exe -sMSSQLSERVER I get this, Server Error: 17058, Severity: 16, State: 1. can someone please help me...

  Is the root directory where all files are kept (directly from accessing from FTP) always "www" or "public_html" depending on what OS? Or is it possible to rename this folder? • Host Name Resolution - ISA 2006 - VPN PPTP

  We are running an ISA 2006 server and PPTP VPN connection works fine. Clients are able to connect to internet, access Outlook, CRM, etc. The problem we are encountering is that host name resolution is not working. Example, when connected via VPN I can’t ping any box other than the VPN server by the host name. Nslookup also fails. I can ping everything fine via IP address. But for clients, they need to be able to access their “mapped” drives over the VPN which all are mapped by host name. I recently took over this position and it sounds like this used to work. What would be the best place to check first? I haven’t had much exposure to ISA and have been reading up a bit on installation procedures, etc. DNS is hosted and running on our domain controller, as well as WINS. It isn’t on the ISA box. Is there a firewall policy that perhaps got removed? What usually is required for host name resolution to pass through. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
