• Extreme Portability: OpenJDK 7 and GlassFish 3.1.1 on Power Mac G5!

  Occasionally you hear someone grumble about platform support for some portion or combination of the Java product "stack". As you're about to see, this really is not as much of a problem as you might think. Our friend John Yeary was able to pull off a pretty slick feat with his vintage Power Mac G5. In his words: Using a build script sent to me by Kurt Miller, build recommendations from Kelly O'Hair, and the great work of the BSD Port team... I created a new build of OpenJDK 7 for my PPC based system using the Zero VM. The results are fantastic. I can run GlassFish 3.1.1 along with all my enterprise applications. I recently had the opportunity to pick up an old G5 for little money and passed on it. What would I do with it? At the time, I didn't think it would be more than a space-consuming novelty. Turns out...I could have had some fun and a useful piece of hardware at the same time. Maybe it's time to go bargain-hunting again. • Oracle Number One in Supply Chain Planning

  Something nice to write home about!  Saw this accomplishment and worth promoting, with special Congrats to the VCP team. Read on: Summary: Oracle is the #1 player in  Supply Chain Planning  according to research firm ARC Advisory Group Details: The report (Source: ARC Advisory Group, “Supply Chain Planning Worldwide Outlook, Market Analysis and Forecast through 2016,” Clint Reiser, Steve Banker), gives Oracle 21.1% of revenue share, compared to SAP, who was second at 18.6%. JDA Software, Aspen, Logility, and Infor were the next players in the market. The total market was valued at $1.506B. ARC counts Software (new license and upgrades), Implementation Services, Maintenance and Support, and SaaS, in its definition. ARC defines supply chain planning to include four key application areas: Extended SCP, Manufacturing Planning, Inventory/Distribution Planning, and Demand Management. Extended SCP consists of Network Design, Capable to Promise, SCP Composites, and Extended Supply Chain BI software. In the report, ARC further gives Oracle the number one spot in both Software Revenues and Services Revenues subsegments, as well as in many vertical areas such as Government, Electronics and Electrical, Medical Products, Pharmaceutical, and Wholesale/Distribution. ARC also issued a forecast, that predicts SCP revenue to grow from $1.506B in 2011 to $2.172B in 2016, with a CAGR of 7.6%. • Best way to mask 2D sprites in XNA?

  I currently am trying to mask some sprites. Rather than explaining it in words, I've made up some example pictures: The area to mask (in white) Now, the red sprite that needs to be cropped. The final result. Now, I'm aware that in XNA you can do two things to accomplish this: Use the Stencil Buffer. Use a Pixel Shader. I have tried to do a pixel shader, which essentially did this: float4 main(float2 texCoord : TEXCOORD0) : COLOR0 { float4 tex = tex2D(BaseTexture, texCoord); float4 bitMask = tex2D(MaskTexture, texCoord); if (bitMask.a > 0) { return float4(tex.r, tex.g, tex.b, tex.a); } else { return float4(0, 0, 0, 0); } } This seems to crop the images (albeit, not correct once the image starts to move), but my problem is that the images are constantly moving (they aren't static), so this cropping needs to be dynamic. Is there a way I could alter the shader code to take into account it's position? Alternatively, I've read about using the Stencil Buffer, but most of the samples seem to hinge on using a rendertarget, which I really don't want to do. (I'm already using 3 or 4 for the rest of the game, and adding another one on top of it seems overkill) The only tutorial I've found that doesn't use Rendertargets is one from Shawn Hargreaves' blog over here. The issue with that one, though is that it's for XNA 3.1, and doesn't seem to translate well to XNA 4.0. It seems to me that the pixel shader is the way to go, but I'm unsure of how to get the positioning correct. I believe I would have to change my onscreen coordinates (something like 500, 500) to be between 0 and 1 for the shader coordinates. My only problem is trying to work out how to correctly use the transformed coordinates. Thanks in advance for any help!

• Describe the Damas-Milner type inference in a way that a CS101 student can understand

  Hindley-Milner is a type system that is the basis of the type systems of many well known functional programming languages. Damas-Milner is an algorithm that infers (deduces?) types in a Hindley-Milner type system. Wikipedia gives a description of the algorithm which, as far as I can tell, amounts to a single word: "unification." Is that all there is to it? If so, that means that the interesting part is the type system itself not the type inference system. If Damas-Milner is more than unification, I would like a description of Damas-Milner that includes a simple example and, ideally, some code. Also, this algorithm is often said to do type inference.   I have a given XML document (structure can not be changed) and want to get the comments that are written above the nodes. The document looks like this: <!--Some comment here--> <attribute name="Title">Book A</attribute> <attribute name="Author"> <value>Joe Doe</value> <value>John Miller</value> </attribute> <!--Some comment here--> <attribute name="Code">1</attribute> So comments are optional, but if there is one, I want to get the comment above each attribute. Using /*/comment()[n] would give me comment n, but for n=2 I would naturally get the comment of the third attribute, so there is no connection between attributes and comments Any ideas? Thanks

  Hi, I want using GPS data (I got it from $GPRMC) in an desktop application(that uses from mappoint 2009). I get the latitude & longitude, but when I check these points on map, I see the result is incorrect (for example My Data is: 43.412 N, 79.369 W ; but the correct point is: 43.686 N, 79.616 W ). I guess, I must use a correction method before use; I try "Projection method" like "Miller" or "Mercator", but those aren't effective. Can anyone guide me?

  Note: Updated 2/12/11 with links to both presentation materials.     This past week I presented two sessions at SPTechCon San Francisco 2011.  The first session was “The Expanding Developer Toolbox for SharePoint 2010” which .  Thanks to all of my attendees for this session.  They had so many great questions that we ran out of time before covering all of the planned material.  Especially for them I’ve provided the slides and code samples to walk through them on their own.     The second session was “Real World Deployment of SharePoint 2007 Solutions”.  In talking with attendees before the session many were looking for 2007 content.  At the conference SharePoint 2010 was represented much more heavily than 2007, so I was glad to fill a need in the community. Conclusion     This is the 3rd SPTechCon I’ve attended and the conference is getting better with each iteration.  The fine folks at BZ Media should be proud of the effort they’ve put in.  The next SPTechCon will be in Boston in June.  As of right now I won’t be attending that one but I highly recommend anyone to go if you have the chance.         -Frog Out

• Export all SSIS packages from msdb using Powershell

  Have you ever wanted to dump all the SSIS packages stored in msdb out to files? Of course you have, who wouldn’t? Right? Well, at least one person does because this was the subject of a thread (save all ssis packages to file) on the SSIS forum earlier today. Some of you may have already figured out a way of doing this but for those that haven’t here is a nifty little script that will do it for you and it uses our favourite jack-of-all tools … Powershell!! Imagine I have the following package folder structure on my Integration Services server (i.e. in [msdb]): There are two packages in there called “20110111 Chaining Expression components” & “Package”, I want to export those two packages into a folder structure that mirrors that in [msdb]. • Django URL regex question

  Hey all! I had a quick question about Django URL configuration, and I guess REGEX as well. I have a small configuration application that takes in environments and artifacts in the following way: url(r'^env/(?P<env>\w+)/artifact/(?P<artifact>\w+)/$', 'config.views.ipview', name="bothlist"), Now, this works fine, but what I would like to do is have it be able to have additional parameters that are optional, such as a verbose mode or no formating mode. I know how to do this just fine in the views, but I can't wrap my head around the regex. the call would be something like GET /env/<env>/artifact/<artifact>/<opt:verbose>/<opt:noformat> Any help would be appreciated, thanks! -Shawn

• Django exclude(**kwargs) help

  Hey guys/gals! I had a question for you, something that I can't seem to find the solution for... Basically, I have a model called Environment, and I am passing all of them to a view, and there are particular environments that I would like to exclude. Now, I know there is a exclude function on a queryset, but I can't seem to figure out how to use it for multiple options... For example, I tried this but it didn't work: kwargs = {"name": "env1", "name": "env2"} envs = Environment.objects.exclude( kwards ) But the only thing that it will exclude is the last "name" value in the list of kwargs. I understand why it does that now, but I still can't seem to exclude multiple objects with one command. Any help is much appreciated! Shawn

  Hello, I am starting to get a grip on RegEx thanks to all the great help here on SO with my other questions. But I am still suck on this one: My code is: StreamReader reader = new StreamReader(fDialog.FileName.ToString()); string content = reader.ReadToEnd(); reader.Close(); I am reading in a text file and I want to search for this text and change it (the X and Y value always follow each other in my text file): X17.8Y-1. But this text can also be X16.1Y2.3 (the values will always be different after X and Y) I want to change it to this X17.8Y-1.G54 or X(value)Y(value)G54 My RegEx statement follows but it is not working. content = Regex.Replace(content, @"(X(?:\d*\.)?\d+)*(Y(?:\d*\.)?\d+)", "$1$2G54"); Can someone please modify it for me so it works and will search for X(wildcard) Y(Wildcard) and replace it with X(value)Y(value)G54? • URGENT: How to force a postback with asp.net and C#

  I have a demo scheduled with a client and i need a quick and dirty fix for now. I will find a more appropriate work around tomorrow but for the time being i need a way to force a post back, or refresh the page. i tried: Response.Redirect(""); but it brings me to a page that says "Object moved to here". 'here' is a hyperlink that brings me to the page with desired results but i wish to bypass this message. Any ideas. This is very urgent. Any help would be much appeciated Thanks, shawn

• referencing a WCF web service

  Our current project uses an asmx service. We want to keep this service for now, but would like to add an additional wcf service for ajax calls. I followed a procedure i found online to set up the service and it works fine with javascript in aspx files within that particular project but i'm unsure how to reference it in javascript files in a different project (in the same solution). If someone could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated. • Slides and Code from my Silverlight MVVM Talk at DevConnections

  I had a great time at the DevConnections conference in Las Vegas this year where Visual Studio 2010 and Silverlight 4 were launched. While at the conference I had the opportunity to give a full-day Silverlight workshop as well as 4 different talks and met a lot of people developing applications in Silverlight. I also had a chance to appear on a live broadcast of Channel 9 with John Papa, Ward Bell and Shawn Wildermuth, record a video with Rick Strahl covering jQuery versus Silverlight and record a few podcasts on Silverlight and ASP.NET MVC 2.  It was a really busy 4 days but I had a lot of fun chatting with people and hearing about different business problems they were solving with ASP.NET and/or Silverlight. Thanks to everyone who attended my sessions and took the time to ask questions and stop by to talk one-on-one. One of the talks I gave covered the Model-View-ViewModel pattern and how it can be used to build architecturally sound applications. Topics covered in the talk included: Understanding the MVVM pattern Benefits of the MVVM pattern Creating a ViewModel class Implementing INotifyPropertyChanged in a ViewModelBase class Binding a ViewModel declaratively in XAML Binding a ViewModel with code ICommand and ButtonBase commanding support in Silverlight 4 Using InvokeCommandBehavior to handle additional commanding needs Working with ViewModels and Sample Data in Blend Messaging support with EventBus classes, EventAggregator and Messenger My personal take on code in a code-beside file (I’m all in favor of it when used appropriately for message boxes, child windows, animations, etc.) One of the samples I showed in the talk was intended to teach all of the concepts mentioned above while keeping things as simple as possible.  The sample demonstrates quite a few things you can do with Silverlight and the MVVM pattern so check it out and feel free to leave feedback about things you like, things you’d do differently or anything else. MVVM is simply a pattern, not a way of life so there are many different ways to implement it. If you’re new to the subject of MVVM check out the following resources. I wish this talk would’ve been recorded (especially since my live and canned demos all worked :-)) but these resources will help get you going quickly. New Video Tutorial: How to Use a Behavior to Fire Methods from Objects in Styles Victor Gaudioso has a video tutorial up responding to a question from a developer. He demonstrates development of a Behavior that can be attached to objects in or out of Styles that allows you to specify what Method they need to fire. Creating a Silverlight Client for @shanselman ’s Nerd Dinner, using oData and Bing Maps Anoop Madhusudanan took Scott Hanselman's post on an OData API for StackOverflow, and has created a Silverlight client for Nerd Dinner, including BingMaps. A Chrome and Glass Theme - Part 2 Phil Middlemiss has the next part of his Chrome and Glass Theme up. In this one he creates a very nice chrome-look button with visual state changes. MVVM Light Toolkit V3 SP1 for Windows Phone 7 Laurent Bugnion has released a new version of MVVM Light for WP7. Included is an installation manual and information about what was changed. • Sesame update du jour: SL 4, OOB, Azure, and proxy support

  I've just published a new version of Sesame Data Browser. Here's what's new this time: Upgraded to Silverlight 4 Can run out-of-browser (OOB), with elevated permissions. This gives you an icon on your desktop and enables new scenarios. Note: The application is unsigned for the moment. Support for Windows Azure authentication Support for SQL Azure authentication If you are behind a proxy that requires authentication, just give Sesame a new try after clicking on "If you are behind a proxy that requires authentication, please click here" An icon and a button for closing connections are now displayed on connection tabsSome less visible improvements Here is the connection view with anonymous access: If you want to access Windows Azure tables as OData, all you have to do is use your table storage endpoint as the URL, and provide your access key: A Windows Azure table storage address looks like this: http://<your account>.table.core.windows.net/ If you want to browse your SQL Azure databases with Sesame, you have to enable OData support for them at https://www.sqlazurelabs.com/ConfigOData.aspx. I won't show how it works because it's already been done in several places over the Web. Here are pointers: OData.org: Got SQL Azure? Then you've got OData OakLeaf Systems: Enabling and Using the OData Protocol with SQL Azure Patrick Verbruggen: Creating an OData feed for your Azure databases Shawn Wildermuth: SQL Azure's OData Support Jack Greenfield: How to Use OData for SQL Azure with AppFabric Access Control You can choose to enable anonymous access or not. When you don't enable anonymous access, you have to provide an Issuer name and a Secret key, and optionally an Security Token Service (STS) endpoint: Excerpt from Jack Greenfield's blog: To enable OData access to the currently selected database, check the box labeled "Enable OData". When OData access is enabled, database user mapping information is displayed at the bottom of the form.Use the drop down list labeled "Anonymous Access User" to select an anonymous access user. If an anonymous access user is selected, then all queries against the database presented without credentials will execute by impersonating that user. You can access the database as the anonymous user by clicking on the link provided at the bottom of the page. If no anonymous access user is selected, then the OData Service will not allow anonymous access to the database.Click the link labeled "Add User" to add a user for authenticated access. In the pop up panel, select the user from the drop down list. Leave the issuer name empty for simple authentication, or provide the name of a trusted Security Token Service (STS) for federated authentication. For example, to federate with another ACS based STS, provide the base URI for the STS endpoint displayed by the Windows Azure AppFabric Portal for the STS.Click the "OK" button to complete the configuration process and dismiss the pop up panel. When one or more authenticated access users are added, the OData Service will impersonate them when appropriate credentials are presented. You can designate as many authenticated access users as you like. The OData Service will decide which one to impersonate for each query by inspecting the credentials presented with the query.Next time I'll give an overview of how Sesame Data Browser is built.In the meantime, happy data browsing!
