• Google Indexed an Unlinked Page

- by Yar
Google indexed a page on a site of mine that was not linked from any other page, ever. No one has ever put a link to it, and the directory contents were not browsable. How could this happen? I thought crawlers have no way to include a page that is not linked.

• Safely get rid of "You have new mail in /var/mail" on a Mac?

- by viatropos
I was messing around with sendmail in Rails a year ago and have had this message popping up in the terminal after every command ever since: You have new mail in /var/mail/Lance How do I properly get rid of that so the message goes away? I ever use any of that functionality and don't have mail on my computer. There's one file in /var/mail called lance, and it's huge. Can I just remove it?

• Biggest command-line mistake?

- by Peter Hilton
What is the most damage (of whatever kind) that you have ever caused with a single mistaken/mistyped/misguided command line? I deleted a production system database by mistake a while back, for example, but I was lucky (i.e. backed-up) and there was no permanent data loss, lost money, property damage etc. Most importantly (for votes), what do you do to make sure it will not ever happen again?

• Grounded outlet on external hard drive.

- by goathens
Is there any value in getting an external hard drive with a grounded power supply? Would grounding the drive protect it from a static jolt from my hand when I pick it up? I've only really ever used the huge 5.25" external housings (they usually have an integrated power supply and use the standard heavy PSU cable with ground), and I need some more but noticed while shopping that the current trend is towards smaller enclosures with the external brick (and hardly ever grounded).

• MySQL full text search with partial words

- by Rob
MySQL Full Text searching appears to be great and the best way to search in SQL. However, I seem to be stuck on the fact that it won't search partial words. For instance if I have an article titled "MySQL Tutorial" and search for "MySQL", it won't find it. Having done some searching I found various references to support for this coming in MySQL 4 (i'm using 5.1.40). I've tried using "MySQL" and "%MySQL%", but neither works (one link I found suggested it was stars but you could only do it at the end or the beginning not both). Here's my table structure and my query, if someone could tell me where i'm going wrong that would be great. I'm assuming partial word matching is built in somehow. CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `articles` ( `article_id` smallint(5) unsigned NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, `article_name` varchar(64) NOT NULL, `article_desc` text NOT NULL, `article_link` varchar(128) NOT NULL, `article_hits` int(11) NOT NULL, `article_user_hits` int(7) unsigned NOT NULL DEFAULT '0', `article_guest_hits` int(10) unsigned NOT NULL DEFAULT '0', `article_rating` decimal(4,2) NOT NULL DEFAULT '0.00', `article_site_id` smallint(5) unsigned NOT NULL DEFAULT '0', `article_time_added` int(10) unsigned NOT NULL, `article_discussion_id` smallint(5) unsigned NOT NULL DEFAULT '0', `article_source_type` varchar(12) NOT NULL, `article_source_value` varchar(12) NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`article_id`), FULLTEXT KEY `article_name` (`article_name`,`article_desc`,`article_link`) ) ENGINE=MyISAM DEFAULT CHARSET=utf8 AUTO_INCREMENT=7 ; INSERT INTO `articles` VALUES (1, 'MySQL Tutorial', 'Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. • Can bad stuff happen when dividing 1/a very small float?

- by Jeremybub
If I want to check that positive float A is less than the inverse square of another positive float B (in C99), could something go wrong if B is very small? I could imagine checking it like if(A<1/(B*B)) but if B is small enough, would this possibly result in infinity? If that were to happen, would the code still work correctly in all situations? in a similar vein, I might do if(1/A>B*B) Which might be slightly better because B*B might be zero if B is small (is this true?) Finally, a solution that I can't imagine being wrong is if(sqrt(1/A)>B) Which I don't think would ever result in zero division, but still might be problematic if A is close to zero. So basically, my questions are Can 1/X ever be infinity if X is greater than zero (but small)? Can X*X ever be zero if X is greater than zero? Will comparisons with infinity work the way I would expect them to?

• YAGNI and database creation scripts

- by Daniel Straight
Right now, I have code which creates the database (just a few CREATE queries on a SQLite database) in my main database access class. This seems unnecessary as I have no intention of ever using the code. I would just need it if something went wrong and I needed to recreate the database. Should I... Leave things as they are, even though the database creation code is about a quarter of my file size. Move the database-creation code to a separate script. It's likely I'll be running it manually if I ever need to run it again anyway, and that would put it out-of-sight-out-of-mind while working on the main code. Delete the database-creation code and rely on revision control if I ever find myself needing it again.

• Is it good practice to put private API in the .m files and public API in .h files in Cocoa?

- by Paperflyer
Many of my classes in my current project have several properties and methods that are only ever called from within the class itself. Also, they might mess with the working of the class depending on the current state of the class. Currently, all these interfaces are defined in the main interface declaration in the .h files. Is it considered good practice to put the “private” methods and properties at the top of the .m files? This won't ever affect anything since I am very likely the only person ever to look at this source code, but of course it would be interesting to know for future projects.

• Codeigniter: Check where model is loaded from?

- by qwerty
I'm having the strangest thing ever right now. I "disabled" a model because i don't need to access it ever again. I did so by echoing out an error string in the __construct() and right after that die(). That way i would notice if i ever loaded the model, even by mistake, which should never happen. Alright? The problem is, the model is not loaded ANYWHERE in the entire project, but it still gets loaded for some reason. It's not auto loaded, that's for sure. Is it possible to track down where a model is loaded? Like which line it happens etc?

• Adding an integer onto an array

- by Ohmnastrum
I'm trying to add random numbers onto the end of this array when ever I call this function. I've narrowed it down to just this so far. when ever I check to see if anything is in the array it says 0. So now i'm quite stumped. I'm thinking that MutableArray releases the contents of it before I ever get to use them. problem is I don't know what to use. A button calls the function and pretty much everything else is taken care of its just this portion inside the function. NSMutableArray * choices; -(void) doSomething { int r = arc4random() % 4; //The problem... [choices addObject:[NSNumber numberWithInt:r]]; int anInt = [[choices objectAtIndex:1] integerValue]; NSLog(@"%d", anInt); //I'm getting nothing no matter what I do. //some type of loop that goes through the array and displays each element //after it gets added }

• What is the proper way to check the previous value of a field before saving an object? (Using Django

- by anonymous coward
I have a Django Model with updated_by and an approved_by fields, both are ForeignKey fields to the built-in (auth) User models. I am aware that with updated_by, it's easy enough to simply over-ride the .save() method on the Model, and shove the request.user in that field before saving. However, for approved_by, this field should only ever be filled in when a related field (date_approved) is first filled in. I'm somewhat certain that I can check this logically, and fill in the field if the previous value was empty. What is the proper way to check the previous value of a field before saving an object? I do not anticipate that date_approved will ever be changed or updated, nor should there be any reason to ever update the approved_by entry. UPDATE: Regarding forms/validation, I should have mentioned that none of the fields in question are seen by or editable by users of the site. If I have misunderstood, I'm sorry, but I'm not sure how forms and validation apply to my question.

• On Turning 30…

- by MOSSLover
I know I am not a wise old sage like some people in the community. I just turned 30 however I feel like all my years looking back have changed me. My collective experiences and thoughts have given me a different perspective on life recently. Seven months ago my head was in a gutter and since then a lot of things have happened. I was always the weird kid in the corner reading Star Trek books. When I was in elementary school I thought that kids would throw me birthday parties out of pity because I was the poor kid who everyone hated. I am no longer that person. I realized that during the worst possible period between my 29th and 30th year when I hit rock bottom. You all know the insane story as I’ve told it two billion times over. Honestly it was the best thing that ever happened to me in my life time, because many things would not have happened. My friends came through for me at every given moment people from all over were checking up on me all over the world. I fell and I landed on a bunch of people it was awesome. I landed on family and friends who I thought I was never close enough to talk about these things. They helped me realize I had a ton of unfulfilled dreams. I got to move to New York City one of the greatest cities in the universe. I got to do whatever I wanted without judgment from anyone. I got to meet some great people at a few meetup groups in the past few months. I got to meet an awesome person that I have been dating for 3 months. I am trying to run for the 8 billionth time and keep up with it. I got to go to Europe and next week for the first time New Orleans. I got renewed for MVP for 2012. I am grateful for all the people and things in my life. I understand that sometimes when things seem bad you can always seek friends and family. They will always help me. I have to learn to lean on people sometimes just how they occasionally lean on me. That is the biggest thing I have learned from the decade of 20 to 30. I hope that 30 to 40 will be the best decade. I hope that I can continue to grow. I will catch you all later. • What are some good game development programs for kids?

- by John Giotta
I know a very bright little boy who excels in math, but at home he's glued to his Nintendo DS. When I asked him what he wanted to do when he grew up he said "Make video games!" I remember a few years there was mention of a MIT software called Scratch and thought maybe this kid can do want he wants to do. Has anyone used any of the "game development" for kids softwares out there? Can you recommend any?
